Great video man. For all you complaining about where am I going to get the paper and I'll need hundreds of buckets. In a house of 4, we probably throw away about 25lbs of trash a week. Thats 25lbs of trash that goes to the landfill and eventually gets burned anyway. As far as the buckets; after squeezing the water out of it, you LEAVE it out to dry. As someone who builds ALOT of outside fires ( I find it therapeutic). I think this is a great idea and as far as I can tell it would take less actual time after you build the initial setup than sitting at your desk looking for videos to bitch about. Have you seen the leaf log maker? The man uses flour and water to stick it together. Seems like the glue would help it burn longer and possibly hotter. Just a thought
Great video! Coming from a guy that lives in the woods and have burned wood my entire life , the best way to dry those paper logs is in the same room as the wood stove you are burning them in. In the dead of winter here in the Northeast a home that has a woodstove and NO humidifier our homes are Extremely dry. like 15 to 20% humidity. So if I took these wet paper logs and put them by my woodstove when it was running it would humidify the air slightly and dry the log all at once. It's a win win! I could have that paper log you made completely dry in under 3 days by my wood stove. Easily! maybe less time if I put them closer to my stove. :)
I was thinking the exact same thing as I listened to his final comments about it taking a long time to dry this paper mulch log. Put it by the wood stove inside your house where you going to use it. I'm in Southern California we also have very dry air here in the winter when the wood stoves are going. Electric heat in California is only for the ultra-rich. So is water!😅

@sheepsreactingbadly They could just put the log in a giant cast iron tub and sit it on top of the wood stove... Then it'd be contained if it did catch fire. I think it's pretty safe to plop it on top still but I'd remove it when I'm not around just in case....
Doesn't the ink in the junk mail create creosot in your chimney? I was going to burn cardboard and junk mail, and the guy who installed my stove said any paper/cardboard with inks or glues will gunk up your chimney pipe with creasote [SP?] or other dangerous chemicals. So I'm just wondering if anyone else has been told this.
When the paper has been turned into mulch, you could place the mulch in old ice cube trays with a hole punched into the bottom of it. That way, the mulched paper will be the size of charcoal brickets. Another thing you can use is small muffin pans.

I used to live in an old house with my parents as a boy. We had a central heating system where the boiler was in a separate room with outdoor access. If you have the same arrangement you can always keep 10-20 wet logs around the boiler at a safe distance from it during the winter so they dry relatively quickly and you never have to worry.
there is one thing i think i should mention as an "ex" printer you must be very careful will paper that is fully printed on the fumes are very toxic so make sure the area is VERY well ventilated.
A lot of good ideas here for sure. I have a few suggestions to make. Instead of a wood disc, you could simply use another bucket as a press, as they have the exact same shape. To dry your logs, have a safe system where you use the heat from your stove as it burns your previously dried paper logs. The extra humidity is usually good in the house during the dry winter months anyways.
Sugestions from Scandinavia: Make a hole in every log you make and draw a rope through holes, make knots between logs to act like stops to get a 2-3 inch space from log to log then hang the rope horizontaly and let the logs dry. It takes half of the time to dry the logs than putting on the shelves.
You can also use your bucket with no holes to act as your presser to remove the water. Just put it on top of the watered down paper bucket and press. I know your trying to save water. Drain the water into an extra bucket, saved water., use 2 concrete house blocks put the draining bucket straddled the 2 blocks, put the good bucket inside the holed bucket and have a seat. Incase you don't have a saw to cut wood for a presser . I learned that from my son. Cheapest place for buckets as of today is walmart here in Northwest Florida. They have gone up in prices at lowes and home depot. Be Blessed. And keep up the great videos.

In the 70's, my dad used to make me roll up the newspapers and flyers into paper logs. No water, no drill, no mess. Tie the logs with string, and place seam side down on the grate. Obviously you couldn't use egg cartons that way, but they can be used as starter wicks. So much quicker. So much easier.
I'll have to try this. We have multiple 5 gal buckets as my husband is a contractor. I usually save all cardboard and paper and just use it to start fires in the fire pit. Great tip! God bless you 🙏

***** He did say in a greenhouse only a couple of days, and he is right. I make these and I have them in our greenhouse (81degrees) and at the end of the 3rd day they are vary dry. I have even cut one in 1/2 to see and the inside was dry also.
On thing i would suggest, U need to have a spot to dry them out fast, if they sit wet for more then 7 days mold will start to grow on it. and you dont want to burn mold.

Bit late to the party but apparently at scouts when they make small fire starters out of dryer fluff (lint for the US) they add something like Vicks Vaporub or anything else with a petroleum base to it for flammability. Maybe you can take the same approach with these briquettes if you want to start fires with them instead of having to already have a fire started. Edit: Maybe you could even syringe the Vicks or equivalent into the centre of these briquettes after it’s dried and keep squeezing as you withdraw the needle to ensure the fire get into the briquette.
Why not rather cutting and using thick circular wood to force water out, just use another bucket without any holes in it and press it down onto the bucket with liquid paper in it. Faster, and easier and no cutting.
This may have been suggested...I use a big paint stirrer drill attachment. Works great. Cardboard cups and thicker materials need to be pretorn a bit. I love this idea. My stove will be pro-installed beginning of Dec. '21. Thank you.
If I remember from the 70's right, we used borax in the water to help it catch fire instead of smolder. Something that may help you! Also if the chunk doesn't please you asthetically, try rolling it up in a paper bag when it's almost dry. Cheers!
yes we rolled up old newspapers super tight into "logs" and took them camping. Conservation of resources was common.sense and respectful. It's great to repurpose this stuff. I am concerned to know if the dyes in the ink or coatings on the paper are toxic and if toxins are released into the water or into indoor air when burned?
In a ventilated wood stove the smoke is going up the pipe. But yes the ink and glue whatever is bad for you most likely. But there are worse things in everyday life then burning this ink stuff. Burning plastic or just eating from plastic containers is probably a bigger problem.
I'm told that a lot of printing inks these days are soy based and safe to burn, can anyone confirm ? I also think that burning the fire hot rather than damped down gives cleaner burning and helps break down a lot of combustion prodeucts and impurities.
Most likely its bad, and even more with plastic windows you would forget to take off before putting your waste for this purpose, You can just make 2 paper waste containers and be more selective about it one for recycling and one for making this stuff and only use paper that is mostly clean or has little to no ink on it or only black or blue ink like o letters, also care for paper cups as they have wax coating or plastic coating, as long as you know its only wax coating it would be ok to burn since its same as burning a candle, but plastic lining is a no no.

The part I like best in your video is about soaking the paper so that it gets all soft and then using a minimal amount of energy to make it into smaller bits, that's plain common sense which has become quite uncommon of late. Cheers buddy.
I realize the author "Tiny House listings" says it all so you wouldn't have any room for a trash compactor inside a tiny house. Otherwise you could compress your household garbage into cubes and burn it. Paper, plastic and all... A bought a used trash compactor for $60 and after the refrigerator, it's one of the best appliances I ever bought. If I had a choice between a trash compactor and a microwave, I'd choose the trash compactor. Don't buy one new, there are plenty of these at charity and thrift stores. My wife creates an ungodly amount of garbage. Sometimes so much I'd have to place the excess in my parent's trash can. I have had to burn it at times and shovel the ashes into our trash can. Now I can compress a weeks worth of garbage into no more than 2 cubes. Since then when I find a good deal on one at a thrift store, I'll buy it. I got one in the basement as a spare if the one in my kitchen craps out. I got one in my garage I bought for $20 that appeared as if it had never been used I use to crush aluminum cans with. Yeah I know I'll have to crush allot of cans to pay off a $20 trash compactor but I'll save time and gas money not having to make multiple trips to the recycling center. I've actually considered burning these cubes in a wood stove to heat (or help heat) my garage instead of burning propane. The downside is accumulating these cubes from April to November. They would have to be stored somewhere secure to keep the raccoons and rats from tearing into them. Plus storing them over the summer would give off quite a stench.
common misconceptions and DO’s/DONT’s: - Never use any paper that is laminated or glossy. Feel it first. Things such as magazines, some fliers, and coupons and water bottle wrappers are a no go. - Ink can burn perfectly fine, so if your paper is printed or written on, it’s fine to burn. But do not go and dump ink in on purpose. - Never dump envelopes into the logs, the plastic window and glue will burn badly.
Sorry burning ink is carcinogenic not safe and over time will cause your chimny to collect carcinogens so the more ink you burn the more toxic it becomes... Use cardboard with no ink plenty around and cleaner to burn. This is an idiot copying one of the hundreds of other idiot videos doing the same thing

Good idea! If you had a third bucket, you could use that as the press in place of using a saw and cutting wood (or maybe let the water drain onto plants and just use the second bucket in place of a third) Also, if you had a paint mixer, you could save effort of building a custom tool and using that to blend.
Well I've got plenty buckets I get all the peanut butter buckets after they're empty and I've got plenty of paper to burn my neighbor's call the fire department every time I burn my wood pile and also the health department for the buckets but my neighbor's Pitbull keeps getting loose and Animal Control don't show up so I've got that line of buckets to keep him from coming in my yard through the electric fence and its full of water so I can dump on him when he grabs my dog now I've got another excuse for all them buckets thank you will keep the Neighbors at Bay

I'm a chemist, and to those concerned about the bleach on paper (sodium hypochlorite), once the paper is mulched it should be absorbed to a good degree in the water. Just to be safe, though, try to avoid getting the fire up to the boiling point of bleach. (That would release chlorine gas if it's still present.)
I use a similar method to make fire starters, even made my own blender blades. I add dead grass and leaves as I find that solid paper doesn't light as easily. I usually make 3-4" balls with my hands, small enough to fit into baggies to put in my camping bag.
Couple of thoughts... 1) You could dry them over your wood-burning stove or fireplace... The big advantage is to increase your indoor humidity, plus speed. 2) Could these bricks be converted into charcoal for better burning efficiency?
Mike D What is wrong with you? Do you really think, there is only either russion gas or burning paper to keep your house comfy? Again, why burning paper is a bad idea: Paper is produced form Wood, needs quite a bit of work to get the wood chopped down, grinded etc, than it gets washed and treated chemically and takes a lot of water. Now compare it to burning wood for example: Choip the tree, chop it down a bit, done. You can recycle paper: it gets washed, the paint removed (takes water again) and add a bit new paper to it. That takes less power, less chemical, less water, and you don't produce toxic fumes by burning it. So, come again, and tell me a good reason FOR bruning paper as fuel.

My dad was doing this back in the late 70's to late 80's in a plastic bin in the outhouse..... hell he'd raid the neighbors bins for newspapers, soak them overnight, use a paper brick press then to force out the water and form the bricks then sell the paper bricks to the same neighbors. We used them too (back when we had a fireplace) 'cos the paper bricks burned for hours
I've seen this as well! But according to my EPA Certified stove using a Vermiculite block or Vermiculite as the secondary burn process, It's an absolute no no because the ink will clog the block! You could definitely use cardboard or clean paper products. It's a great tip for certain. USN (ret)
Exactly! In Germany, with our new high performance / low pollution stoves, you're definitely not meant to burn paper at all, because the ink will, over time, cover up the insides of the stove as well as the chimney, which is even worse, as it might start burning at some point. It's recommended to only burn dry hard wood. But the idea is great, and people could think of solutions to that problem. I have lots of card board due to online shopping and delivery, and I've wondered how I could make good use of it. Card board is actually a good business, it's worth a lot because it burns well.
This is a great process. I normally shred every other month because I do own a shredder and like making use of it. The other thing I do different is go to my local hardware supply company (Home Depot, Lowe's or Ace) and get their wood shavings for free. "The shavings are soooo fine"; it helps the product mixture to burn much longer with the added wood shavings/saw dust. I hope this comment was helpful.
I enjoyed your video,as it shows how to turn something that is useless (junk mail) into something valuable. The thought occurred to me after watching it that you could use discarded paper towels as a source for your logs as well as junk mail. I personally go through a ton of paper towels,and most of it isn't that dirty when thrown out.
woodchipper chips & twigs & leaves from ur yard waste with a 40%+ paper mix to up to 60% yard waste and youll have more materials to work with, can also go by a wood shop and get scrap wood and saw dust
This is worth the time to make these as extra fule. Of course like one person said in their comments what about the wood cost, manufacturing cost and electric cost to make and process this project? ...they did forget one cost, the cost of the food you ate to create fule for the energy you needed to be able to do this project. My preception here is, "these are stupid comments from stupid lazy people". I thank you for this idea. I get a lot of junk mail that I now put in a bucket. You have given me a great solution as to what to do with it. I have no welder, but a piece of threaded rod with jamb nuts to hold the blade which works great and I used another bucket to press the water out, in place of the wood. This also works great. Thanks again for a wise solution to trash recycle.
I used a cement mixer with a dozen softball sized rocks inside to pulverize the paper, grass, leaves and whatnot. it let's me walk away from the process.
Paper is normally treated with lots of chemicals in its manufacturing process. Have you done any research to ensure that burning paper in an enclosed is safe?
Organic compounds can also break down into CO or other dangerous compounds as many fossil fuels do. Don't get me wrong, I think it is a great idea and is likely a more environmentally friendly way of recycling paper (as opposed to electrically heating your home). But I've been trying to see if any real research into the safeness has been done and I can't find anything.

***** i am with you Charles... forget the plastics fo sho...my ex worked in the printing field for years and said most inks used in printed materials will never be safe... why did some green firms switch to soy-based inks? cuz the others are well known to be toxic,& cheap...many folks have refused to use colored paper ads for gardening and composting materials for years... then, what if inks are GMO soy based? recycling is great on all levels but my airspace is sacred to my longevity: we all know cheap candles are unsafe to burn, toxins in the wicks and waxes... we shouldn't take this subject for granted...and please, antiwatt3, kind words? .. and thankyou for the shared info, too...thxxx everybody... Cheapest buckets that I have found are from a bakery. They get frosting in buckets and will give the empty buckets away or sell them for $1.00 each. These also make great food storage buckets since they come with tight fitting lids and are food grade.
Brendan Cribbs im just saying its not really a viable source of fuel unless you get a crazy amount of junk mail everyday. And i cant see them producing much heat or lasting long either but i haven't tried so i could be wrong
TheLukey21 im pretty sure this is how they make those enviologs or whatever you call them that you buy in the store, they burn alright but seasoned wood from an oak or whatever good burning wood u got is way better and all it takes is time and effort and from what ive noticed is if you actually get them burning good they dont last longer than an hour and thats if your lucky

Brendan Cribbs the idea is to reduce waste yet you'll be burning it depositing smoke into the atmosphere rather than burying it so it turns to compost, i think the paper is better left in the trash cans. +xAIB those firelogs usually have an added fuel source (most often a petroleum based wax) that allows them to burn longer and light easier.
Great project. To get these things to burn easier, have you thought of adding some dryer lint to the mix? I know that some people mix dryer lint and wax to make home made fire starters. Just a thought. :-)
I had an idea while watching your cool video. What if instead of a timber press to squeeze the water out, you fill another bucket with concrete so you could leave it to compress while your out and about running other errands? Possibly more time saved?
Was thinking something similar to this, also where you could put the newly molded paper pulp bricks would be a shelf somewhat above the wood stove? The radiant heat would help dry a few bricks at a time while also keeping your home warm. This would work I think especially outside of summer.
Jesse Cashman Using your wood stove or fireplace insert is an art you develop over time, and your idea about the shelf is excellent. I have a metal shelf on top of my old Treemont fireplace insert that is about 8" deep and 3 feet long. I keep the "next wood" up there, picking the front ones first, so those are drying for 6 hrs or more. Even wet wood from outside dries fine by then. I also stack about 6 medium-to-large pieces on both side of the insert where it gets heated, and has a lot of air passing over it from the intake ports. Also, a large piece on the hearth, right below the door. This way, wood that is hardly burnable, ordinarily, is warm to the touch & dry as a bone by the time it goes inside. I routinely burn cordwood that is very green, and this makes it possible, though I try hard to mix it with some better wood. All my leftover wood from last year is kept separate to mix with fresher, more troublesome wood -- a practice I recommend.
I think you could just use a third bucket for the press. Also, sometimes you can get those buckets with lids that could be trimmed down for a press or just used as the seat. Also, you might try making the logs a bit smaller to speed up dry time. And how well did they burn?

Oil IS chemicals. Crude oil is thousands of compounds, all mushed together. Paper WAS plant matter, but after all the denaturing, bleaching, stabilizing, coloring, there is not much 'natural' left. What is the point of this non-sequitur?.
Paper is not 'just paper' anymore. Clay, binders, resins, oils and even glue is a major part of 'slick' magazine paper. Plain newsprint burns pretty clean, but what is in the ink? Color supplements burn in such pretty colors...metal ions dancing in the flames. Some glossy flyers are less than 40% paper, the rest being plastic. Rather than burn this stuff and release a random chemical soup, pyrolyze it. Destructive distillation, 'cracking', partial combustion to break chemical bonds, whatever you call it. The nasty crap from random paper just doesn't become a vapor at the temperatures/pressures involved. Distill the final product, you can get oil, kerosene, gasoline, whatever hydro-carbon you want. The raw material is free, and so is the energy 'trapped' in it. But the effort to get it out will not be 'free'.

Great ideas here! Very creative! I am the ultimate lazy log maker. I take paper section and roll them up and leave an open tunnel inside then immerse them in my kitchen sink till soaked. (10 minutes). Then I pull them out and squeeze them out a bit and form the pseudo-log shape ( its already in a log shape) and toss them in the garage to dry. They take about 1 month to dry fully but they keep their shape. They burn easily due the tunnel inside. Sometimes I add junk mail and leaves from the yard as I roll up the newspaper. I agree, this is a vastly unrealized fuel source especially now before the SHTF and the mail and newspapers stop coming :) Super video!

All of the tools I already owned. I now use a cordless drill that is charged up from solar panels. The materials used to weld were only used one. The water can easily be collected via rainwater. Thanks for your feedback.

Great ideas, I am going to use it to make papercreate cement and paper. Your tips make a perfect fiber mass to mix and the quick compression will keep the mixture dry so the concrete will form a solid mass after mixing and compression into a block. Thanks!
If you end up using these outside for say a bonfire or campfire, or at your camp site, then you can use that fire to make them dry even faster. Simply stack them around your campfire to form a sort of barrier. The radiant heat from the fire will dry these out faster than if they were just resting somewhere. I do the same for green/fresh/wet wood when outdoors.

If you take the mix and use a hydraulic press or modified log splitter it will become so solid as to increase burn time and BTU output. It will also allow for a cleaner burn. I wouldnt use paper that had high color ink as it contains metals. Regardless of some of the comments, it can be worth your while if you do large batches at a time. As for the tree chopping enthusiasts, This methos is far more time and labor efficient that chopping wood. No chainsaws, oil, gas, air polution in the making of this paper fuel. Personally I would find it easier to collect cardboard boxes than paper alone. Even the left over water can be evaporated leaving "lint" to add to the next mix. The evaporated water would be pollution free.
I like the way you think, I just moved to New England and after last year I see massive piles of split wood every where I go. I think it looks better if you leave it in the forest. althou we could do some clean up to prevent fires. Check out rocket stoves with thermal mass, They are much more efficient, and you can feed them dead fall, and smaller branches ( you know the stuff you have to pick up after the wind blows) and get more heat.

Upon being released from a compressed state. heated mass surface area is suddenly exposed and creates rapid oxidation. This is similar to enclosed elements in a structure fire. Quarter up the block and place it near your stove. It will humidify the dry air in the house while speeding the drying process. Once dry, pour on some melted wax and they'll be much easier to get started...

I guess the person who made the smart ass comment about "wood working too" never needed to buy any to heat in winter... 1500 $ CAD here for the whole 6 mths of winter and you might miss some... not to mention the electrical bills that always pump up during those months since daylight is shorter. Mmm... Burning plastic. I'm sure that isn't putting a ton of bad carcinogens into the air, while not providing a lot of heat, and coating the inside of your pipes/stove with creosote/soot.
Try dryer lint! Put the lint in water ( i like to rip mine up) for around 30 mins to get the junk( dirt, ect) out. pour the water out then press like the paper briquettes.

My first thought was to gather the leaves too, until you mentioned biomasses. I was thinking of building materials too as a result. How much pressure could that log withstand before it crumbles? If an adhesive material was combined, could that potentially make a paper brick? Also, what type of insulation properties (geothermal) might this biomass hold? Seeing that it burns longer but requires more heat to combust, my thought is in it's passive cooling qualities as well. Some builders use hay bails and perhaps the is similar to being a bail of paper. Thought I'd throw the idea out there and see if that reflects back anything. Thanks for sharing.
Now you got me thinking about trying to insulate my kid's treehouse as a test for using this as insulation. I could make a 2'x2'x2" mold and make tiles. Might be a cheap way to insulate tiny homes or animal/livestock shelters.

It's an important component to energy efficiency. Fire hazards and Building Codes may get in the way. Tree houses are not regulated, I believe, by city ordances. If your electricity or gas runs out, you have. Source of fuel to heat.
For those out there that are actually doing this especially during the winter time I have an idea as a truck driver that used to do produce and a lot of things and had very little time to dry out a reefer trailer I would set the thermostat to 34 to 35 degrees this would suck out all the moisture in about an hour's time so if you had something I was 34 degrees of 35 to stick it in you could possibly make these pretty quick during the winter months if you had to

Or you could burn a log. This is way too much work for what you get. I have heated my house for the last decade with wood and never cut down a single healthy tree. There is an abundance of free wood out there for a little sweat. In the time it takes to make a paper block by this method, I could get enough wood to heat my house for a week.
This is a noble and clever effort. However, Looks exhausting. You can buy a cubic foot of wood for a little over dollar a cubic ft which is about the size of a full 5 gal bucket. A cord of wood is around $125 to 150 for 128 cu ft delivered. What is your time and energy worth and how much gas , time and energy would it take to drive to where you find 128 cu ft worth of compressible paper? Nothing is free and unlimited.
One point that you may have not thought of is that some, if not all, of thoses materials are toxics due to treaments, inks, process, etc . . . They are not meant to be brunt inside houses.

So be sure you have a properly vented stove/heater/fireplace and you don't have to worry. In most cases creosote builds up because there isn't enough air flow so there not enough Oxygen can burn up the material.

I like your method better than the tube ones, so much simpler & easy to do. Having said that I'd probably cut them in two. Was going to get a press but I have some buckets that someone put out for clean up, so now I can use those. Great idea
Yeah, this is a terrible idea.... All of those inks and plastics that are used in those newsletters and ads will be redistributed as toxic fumes when they are burned.... This is not beneficial for anyone that is breathing that stuff. I'm going to say there are better methods of heating that are less intrusive to your lungs.

If you work a minimum wage job for the same amount of time, you could buy a cord of real wood and have money left over. This is the same as all the "extreme coupon" people who claim it's all free. No...When they work 8hours/day which they say it takes to do all the clipping and sorting and making shopping plans, and all you end up with is 400 toothbrushes and 80 bottles of dish soap, and baby formula when they have no kids, It's most definitely NOT free. They claim to "save" $20K/year but if they worked that min wage job, they would get 20K in cash that's available to spend on anything, including the items they got with coupons.
how much actual time did he spend making the log? not very long. if you are dumb enough to sit there and wait overnight for it to soak, and then sit there for it to dry out then, it would take long.. if you just walk up do a step then go about your normal routine, it won't consume as much as your precious time,,,

But take taxes out of that and you're probably looking at closer to $15000. Then you can take out your travel and daycare expenses, leaving you with about half of what you earned. And that's if you're working full-time, which is unlikely in a minimum wage job since companies want to avoid giving out benefits. But if you're doing that extreme couponing thing, you are working from home with no travel or daycare expenses. The people on that show are usually stay at home moms so being able to work from home is a big deal for them. Also we're not exactly looking at a great economic climate right now. Even minimum wage jobs can be hard to find, so these people would likely just be unemployed anyway. Add in to that the facts that minimum wage jobs are usually crappy jobs, and that you will rarely get full-time work and all of a sudden, couponing from home doesn't seem like such a bad idea. Now it doesn't show it on the show (likely to avoid IRS scrutiny), but I'm guessing the couponers are selling a good chunk of all the excess stuff they get. If you start weighing the pros and cons of it from a stay at home mother's point of view, it's a pretty great gig.
I used 3" PVC and cut "log" into coins. Dipped the coins in white gas for half a second to help them light easier. My first attempt was a bust because I pressed the log too hard, and it wouldn't stay lit. since then they come out great. The wood stove in my garage really likes them too. Would like to try this and seeing how long it takes to dry in my wood kiln. It's just an old freezer with a heat lamp and a fan, but can dry solid wood bowls out in a few days so these might only take a day or two.

you are right. In Germany we have to sort out our waste. Have to separate Plastic (cans, glas...) and paper, also biological waste from our garbage. And that is correct! Plastic, paper, glas and so are high processed products and it is easy to recycle them. So we are living in a clean nature in our small country. At the end all our caused pollutions are the small parts, occuping the rare free positions in our sphere. So every single person occupyes one of this rare positions. At the end there will come a collaps if we are not able to give nature the chance to work it out. -sorry for my bad english. My basic language is german but I try to write in yours.
A cleaner version of this would be to use sawdust and leaves. I can tell that you'd have plenty of sawdust because I heard a circular saw in the background.
Paper is made with binders that hold the pulp ('sawdust') together, and this works by re-activating the binders. Sawdust and leaves would not make a mass that would stay in a solid chunk like paper does. There is a type of pellet press that takes sawdust or fine shredded leaves and twigs and makes wood pellets, but it uses a lot of pressure, far more than sitting on a bucket!
Actually works even better with any free pulpable wood product. I add some bark chips to even out the burn since these can go out easy when burning only two or three,
This is a great idea. Especially if you have about 20 logs ready to go. Then make more logs weekly to keep up the supply. I don't think I have enough paper weekly to keep up.

Great video man. For all you complaining about where am I going to get the paper and I'll need hundreds of buckets. In a house of 4, we probably throw away about 25lbs of trash a week. Thats 25lbs of trash that goes to the landfill and eventually gets burned anyway. As far as the buckets; after squeezing the water out of it, you LEAVE it out to dry. As someone who builds ALOT of outside fires ( I find it therapeutic). I think this is a great idea and as far as I can tell it would take less actual time after you build the initial setup than sitting at your desk looking for videos to bitch about. Have you seen the leaf log maker? The man uses flour and water to stick it together. Seems like the glue would help it burn longer and possibly hotter. Just a thought

Great video! Coming from a guy that lives in the woods and have burned wood my entire life , the best way to dry those paper logs is in the same room as the wood stove you are burning them in. In the dead of winter here in the Northeast a home that has a woodstove and NO humidifier our homes are Extremely dry. like 15 to 20% humidity. So if I took these wet paper logs and put them by my woodstove when it was running it would humidify the air slightly and dry the log all at once. It's a win win! I could have that paper log you made completely dry in under 3 days by my wood stove. Easily! maybe less time if I put them closer to my stove. :)
I was thinking the exact same thing as I listened to his final comments about it taking a long time to dry this paper mulch log. Put it by the wood stove inside your house where you going to use it. I'm in Southern California we also have very dry air here in the winter when the wood stoves are going. Electric heat in California is only for the ultra-rich. So is water!😅

@sheepsreactingbadly They could just put the log in a giant cast iron tub and sit it on top of the wood stove... Then it'd be contained if it did catch fire. I think it's pretty safe to plop it on top still but I'd remove it when I'm not around just in case....
Doesn't the ink in the junk mail create creosot in your chimney? I was going to burn cardboard and junk mail, and the guy who installed my stove said any paper/cardboard with inks or glues will gunk up your chimney pipe with creasote [SP?] or other dangerous chemicals. So I'm just wondering if anyone else has been told this.
When the paper has been turned into mulch, you could place the mulch in old ice cube trays with a hole punched into the bottom of it. That way, the mulched paper will be the size of charcoal brickets. Another thing you can use is small muffin pans.

I used to live in an old house with my parents as a boy. We had a central heating system where the boiler was in a separate room with outdoor access. If you have the same arrangement you can always keep 10-20 wet logs around the boiler at a safe distance from it during the winter so they dry relatively quickly and you never have to worry.
there is one thing i think i should mention as an "ex" printer you must be very careful will paper that is fully printed on the fumes are very toxic so make sure the area is VERY well ventilated.

A lot of good ideas here for sure. I have a few suggestions to make. Instead of a wood disc, you could simply use another bucket as a press, as they have the exact same shape. To dry your logs, have a safe system where you use the heat from your stove as it burns your previously dried paper logs. The extra humidity is usually good in the house during the dry winter months anyways.
Sugestions from Scandinavia: Make a hole in every log you make and draw a rope through holes, make knots between logs to act like stops to get a 2-3 inch space from log to log then hang the rope horizontaly and let the logs dry. It takes half of the time to dry the logs than putting on the shelves.

You can also use your bucket with no holes to act as your presser to remove the water. Just put it on top of the watered down paper bucket and press. I know your trying to save water. Drain the water into an extra bucket, saved water., use 2 concrete house blocks put the draining bucket straddled the 2 blocks, put the good bucket inside the holed bucket and have a seat. Incase you don't have a saw to cut wood for a presser .
I learned that from my son.
Cheapest place for buckets as of today is walmart here in Northwest Florida. They have gone up in prices at lowes and home depot.

GREAT, I ALSO USE SAWDUST/ORANGE AND LEMON PEEL, AND IRON FILINGS TO MY BRIQUETTES, THEY BURN LONGER, SMELL GREAT AND THE FLAMES ARE ALL THE COLOR OF THE RAINBOW.
In the 70's, my dad used to make me roll up the newspapers and flyers into paper logs. No water, no drill, no mess. Tie the logs with string, and place seam side down on the grate. Obviously you couldn't use egg cartons that way, but they can be used as starter wicks. So much quicker. So much easier.
We did the same for the wood stove.
That reminds me of the movie with John Candy and Dan Akroid The Great Outdoors, “You have to twist it to simulate kindling”!

On thing i would suggest, U need to have a spot to dry them out fast, if they sit wet for more then 7 days mold will start to grow on it. and you dont want to burn mold.

Bit late to the party but apparently at scouts when they make small fire starters out of dryer fluff (lint for the US) they add something like Vicks Vaporub or anything else with a petroleum base to it for flammability.
Maybe you can take the same approach with these briquettes if you want to start fires with them instead of having to already have a fire started.
Edit: Maybe you could even syringe the Vicks or equivalent into the centre of these briquettes after it’s dried and keep squeezing as you withdraw the needle to ensure the fire get into the briquette.

Wouldn't be easier to just go get a log that nature has made for all.
Why not rather cutting and using thick circular wood to force water out, just use another bucket without any holes in it and press it down onto the bucket with liquid paper in it. Faster, and easier and no cutting.

If I remember from the 70's right, we used borax in the water to help it catch fire instead of smolder. Something that may help you! Also if the chunk doesn't please you asthetically, try rolling it up in a paper bag when it's almost dry. Cheers!

yes we rolled up old newspapers super tight into "logs" and took them camping. Conservation of resources was common.sense and respectful. It's great to repurpose this stuff. I am concerned to know if the dyes in the ink or coatings on the paper are toxic and if toxins are released into the water or into indoor air when burned?
In a ventilated wood stove the smoke is going up the pipe. But yes the ink and glue whatever is bad for you most likely. But there are worse things in everyday life then burning this ink stuff. Burning plastic or just eating from plastic containers is probably a bigger problem.
I'm told that a lot of printing inks these days are soy based and safe to burn, can anyone confirm ? I also think that burning the fire hot rather than damped down gives cleaner burning and helps break down a lot of combustion prodeucts and impurities.

Most likely its bad, and even more with plastic windows you would forget to take off before putting your waste for this purpose, You can just make 2 paper waste containers and be more selective about it one for recycling and one for making this stuff and only use paper that is mostly clean or has little to no ink on it or only black or blue ink like o letters, also care for paper cups as they have wax coating or plastic coating, as long as you know its only wax coating it would be ok to burn since its same as burning a candle, but plastic lining is a no no.

The part I like best in your video is about soaking the paper so that it gets all soft and then using a minimal amount of energy to make it into smaller bits, that's plain common sense which has become quite uncommon of late. Cheers buddy.

I realize the author "Tiny House listings" says it all so you wouldn't have any room for a trash compactor inside a tiny house. Otherwise you could compress your household garbage into cubes and burn it. Paper, plastic and all...
A bought a used trash compactor for $60 and after the refrigerator, it's one of the best appliances I ever bought. If I had a choice between a trash compactor and a microwave, I'd choose the trash compactor. Don't buy one new, there are plenty of these at charity and thrift stores.
My wife creates an ungodly amount of garbage. Sometimes so much I'd have to place the excess in my parent's trash can. I have had to burn it at times and shovel the ashes into our trash can. Now I can compress a weeks worth of garbage into no more than 2 cubes.
Since then when I find a good deal on one at a thrift store, I'll buy it. I got one in the basement as a spare if the one in my kitchen craps out. I got one in my garage I bought for $20 that appeared as if it had never been used I use to crush aluminum cans with. Yeah I know I'll have to crush allot of cans to pay off a $20 trash compactor but I'll save time and gas money not having to make multiple trips to the recycling center.
I've actually considered burning these cubes in a wood stove to heat (or help heat) my garage instead of burning propane. The downside is accumulating these cubes from April to November. They would have to be stored somewhere secure to keep the raccoons and rats from tearing into them. Plus storing them over the summer would give off quite a stench.
common misconceptions and DO’s/DONT’s:
- Never use any paper that is laminated or glossy. Feel it first. Things such as magazines, some fliers, and coupons and water bottle wrappers are a no go.
- Ink can burn perfectly fine, so if your paper is printed or written on, it’s fine to burn. But do not go and dump ink in on purpose.
- Never dump envelopes into the logs, the plastic window and glue will burn badly.
Plastic is excellent for fires. I heard that on TH-cam.
Sorry burning ink is carcinogenic not safe and over time will cause your chimny to collect carcinogens so the more ink you burn the more toxic it becomes...
Use cardboard with no ink plenty around and cleaner to burn.

Good idea! If you had a third bucket, you could use that as the press in place of using a saw and cutting wood (or maybe let the water drain onto plants and just use the second bucket in place of a third) Also, if you had a paint mixer, you could save effort of building a custom tool and using that to blend.

Well I've got plenty buckets I get all the peanut butter buckets after they're empty and I've got plenty of paper to burn my neighbor's call the fire department every time I burn my wood pile and also the health department for the buckets but my neighbor's Pitbull keeps getting loose and Animal Control don't show up so I've got that line of buckets to keep him from coming in my yard through the electric fence and its full of water so I can dump on him when he grabs my dog now I've got another excuse for all them buckets thank you will keep the Neighbors at Bay

I'm a chemist, and to those concerned about the bleach on paper (sodium hypochlorite), once the paper is mulched it should be absorbed to a good degree in the water. Just to be safe, though, try to avoid getting the fire up to the boiling point of bleach. (That would release chlorine gas if it's still present.)

I use a similar method to make fire starters, even made my own blender blades. I add dead grass and leaves as I find that solid paper doesn't light as easily. I usually make 3-4" balls with my hands, small enough to fit into baggies to put in my camping bag.
Couple of thoughts...
1) You could dry them over your wood-burning stove or fireplace... The big advantage is to increase your indoor humidity, plus speed.
2) Could these bricks be converted into charcoal for better burning efficiency?

Again, why burning paper is a bad idea:
Paper is produced form Wood, needs quite a bit of work to get the wood chopped down, grinded etc, than it gets washed and treated chemically and takes a lot of water.
Now compare it to burning wood for example: Choip the tree, chop it down a bit, done.
You can recycle paper: it gets washed, the paint removed (takes water again) and add a bit new paper to it. That takes less power, less chemical, less water, and you don't produce toxic fumes by burning it.
So, come again, and tell me a good reason FOR bruning paper as fuel.

My dad was doing this back in the late 70's to late 80's in a plastic bin in the outhouse..... hell he'd raid the neighbors bins for newspapers, soak them overnight, use a paper brick press then to force out the water and form the bricks then sell the paper bricks to the same neighbors. We used them too (back when we had a fireplace) 'cos the paper bricks burned for hours
I've seen this as well! But according to my EPA Certified stove using a Vermiculite block or Vermiculite as the secondary burn process, It's an absolute no no because the ink will clog the block! You could definitely use cardboard or clean paper products. It's a great tip for certain. USN (ret)
Exactly! In Germany, with our new high performance / low pollution stoves, you're definitely not meant to burn paper at all, because the ink will, over time, cover up the insides of the stove as well as the chimney, which is even worse, as it might start burning at some point.
It's recommended to only burn dry hard wood.
But the idea is great, and people could think of solutions to that problem. I have lots of card board due to online shopping and delivery, and I've wondered how I could make good use of it.
Card board is actually a good business, it's worth a lot because it burns well.
This is a great process. I normally shred every other month because I do own a shredder and like making use of it. The other thing I do different is go to my local hardware supply company (Home Depot, Lowe's or Ace) and get their wood shavings for free. "The shavings are soooo fine"; it helps the product mixture to burn much longer with the added wood shavings/saw dust. I hope this comment was helpful.

I enjoyed your video,as it shows how to turn something that is useless (junk mail) into something valuable. The thought occurred to me after watching it that you could use discarded paper towels as a source for your logs as well as junk mail. I personally go through a ton of paper towels,and most of it isn't that dirty when thrown out.
woodchipper chips & twigs & leaves from ur yard waste with a 40%+ paper mix to up to 60% yard waste and youll have more materials to work with, can also go by a wood shop and get scrap wood and saw dust
This is worth the time to make these as extra fule. Of course like one person said in their comments what about the wood cost, manufacturing cost and electric cost to make and process this project? ...they did forget one cost, the cost of the food you ate to create fule for the energy you needed to be able to do this project. My preception here is, "these are stupid comments from stupid lazy people". I thank you for this idea. I get a lot of junk mail that I now put in a bucket. You have given me a great solution as to what to do with it. I have no welder, but a piece of threaded rod with jamb nuts to hold the blade which works great and I used another bucket to press the water out, in place of the wood. This also works great. Thanks again for a wise solution to trash recycle.

Paper is normally treated with lots of chemicals in its manufacturing process. Have you done any research to ensure that burning paper in an enclosed is safe?
Organic compounds can also break down into CO or other dangerous compounds as many fossil fuels do. Don't get me wrong, I think it is a great idea and is likely a more environmentally friendly way of recycling paper (as opposed to electrically heating your home). But I've been trying to see if any real research into the safeness has been done and I can't find anything.

Cheapest buckets that I have found are from a bakery. They get frosting in buckets and will give the empty buckets away or sell them for $1.00 each. These also make great food storage buckets since they come with tight fitting lids and are food grade.
Virtually unlimited fuel is a bit misleading - the constraint is clearly the amount of paper waste your household produces.
And the free bit as well, if i tried to do this it would take about 3 weeks to get enough junk mail to fill it.

+xAIB those firelogs usually have an added fuel source (most often a petroleum based wax) that allows them to burn longer and light easier.

I had an idea while watching your cool video. What if instead of a timber press to squeeze the water out, you fill another bucket with concrete so you could leave it to compress while your out and about running other errands? Possibly more time saved?
Was thinking something similar to this, also where you could put the newly molded paper pulp bricks would be a shelf somewhat above the wood stove? The radiant heat would help dry a few bricks at a time while also keeping your home warm. This would work I think especially outside of summer.
Jesse Cashman Using your wood stove or fireplace insert is an art you develop over time, and your idea about the shelf is excellent.
I have a metal shelf on top of my old Treemont fireplace insert that is about 8" deep and 3 feet long. I keep the "next wood" up there, picking the front ones first, so those are drying for 6 hrs or more. Even wet wood from outside dries fine by then. I also stack about 6 medium-to-large pieces on both side of the insert where it gets heated, and has a lot of air passing over it from the intake ports. Also, a large piece on the hearth, right below the door.
This way, wood that is hardly burnable, ordinarily, is warm to the touch & dry as a bone by the time it goes inside. I routinely burn cordwood that is very green, and this makes it possible, though I try hard to mix it with some better wood. All my leftover wood from last year is kept separate to mix with fresher, more troublesome wood -- a practice I recommend.

I think you could just use a third bucket for the press. Also, sometimes you can get those buckets with lids that could be trimmed down for a press or just used as the seat. Also, you might try making the logs a bit smaller to speed up dry time. And how well did they burn?

Oil IS chemicals. Crude oil is thousands of compounds, all mushed together.

Great ideas here! Very creative! I am the ultimate lazy log maker. I take paper section and roll them up and leave an open tunnel inside then immerse them in my kitchen sink till soaked. (10 minutes). Then I pull them out and squeeze them out a bit and form the pseudo-log shape ( its already in a log shape) and toss them in the garage to dry. They take about 1 month to dry fully but they keep their shape. They burn easily due the tunnel inside. Sometimes I add junk mail and leaves from the yard as I roll up the newspaper. I agree, this is a vastly unrealized fuel source especially now before the SHTF and the mail and newspapers stop coming :) Super video!

All of the tools I already owned. I now use a cordless drill that is charged up from solar panels. The materials used to weld were only used one. The water can easily be collected via rainwater. Thanks for your feedback.

If you end up using these outside for say a bonfire or campfire, or at your camp site, then you can use that fire to make them dry even faster. Simply stack them around your campfire to form a sort of barrier. The radiant heat from the fire will dry these out faster than if they were just resting somewhere. I do the same for green/fresh/wet wood when outdoors.

If you take the mix and use a hydraulic press or modified log splitter it will become so solid as to increase burn time and BTU output. It will also allow for a cleaner burn. I wouldnt use paper that had high color ink as it contains metals. Regardless of some of the comments, it can be worth your while if you do large batches at a time. As for the tree chopping enthusiasts, This methos is far more time and labor efficient that chopping wood. No chainsaws, oil, gas, air polution in the making of this paper fuel. Personally I would find it easier to collect cardboard boxes than paper alone. Even the left over water can be evaporated leaving "lint" to add to the next mix. The evaporated water would be pollution free.
I like the way you think, I just moved to New England and after last year I see massive piles of split wood every where I go. I think it looks better if you leave it in the forest. althou we could do some clean up to prevent fires. Check out rocket stoves with thermal mass, They are much more efficient, and you can feed them dead fall, and smaller branches ( you know the stuff you have to pick up after the wind blows) and get more heat.
In Africa scavenge fallen leaves and twigs ... No need drop or cut trees ...

Quarter up the block and place it near your stove. It will humidify the dry air in the house while speeding the drying process. Once dry, pour on some melted wax and they'll be much easier to get started...

My first thought was to gather the leaves too, until you mentioned biomasses. I was thinking of building materials too as a result. How much pressure could that log withstand before it crumbles? If an adhesive material was combined, could that potentially make a paper brick? Also, what type of insulation properties (geothermal) might this biomass hold? Seeing that it burns longer but requires more heat to combust, my thought is in it's passive cooling qualities as well. Some builders use hay bails and perhaps the is similar to being a bail of paper. Thought I'd throw the idea out there and see if that reflects back anything. Thanks for sharing.
Now you got me thinking about trying to insulate my kid's treehouse as a test for using this as insulation. I could make a 2'x2'x2" mold and make tiles. Might be a cheap way to insulate tiny homes or animal/livestock shelters.
@@offhandacoustic I like that idea. I was thinking about moisture and mold. Replacing old insulation would be much cheaper using recycled paper products. Replacing insulation may occur more often. It's an important component to energy efficiency. Fire hazards and Building Codes may get in the way. Tree houses are not regulated, I believe, by city ordances. If your electricity or gas runs out, you have. Source of fuel to heat.

For those out there that are actually doing this especially during the winter time I have an idea as a truck driver that used to do produce and a lot of things and had very little time to dry out a reefer trailer I would set the thermostat to 34 to 35 degrees this would suck out all the moisture in about an hour's time so if you had something I was 34 degrees of 35 to stick it in you could possibly make these pretty quick during the winter months if you had to

Or you could burn a log. This is way too much work for what you get. I have heated my house for the last decade with wood and never cut down a single healthy tree. There is an abundance of free wood out there for a little sweat. In the time it takes to make a paper block by this method, I could get enough wood to heat my house for a week.

Theres also a lot of garbage paper that can be used if you live in an area without an abundance of trees. Also just a little sweat.

absolutely...it's common sense.
So be sure you have a properly vented stove/heater/fireplace and you don't have to worry. In most cases creosote builds up because there isn't enough air flow so there not enough Oxygen can burn up the material.

Yeah, this is a terrible idea.... All of those inks and plastics that are used in those newsletters and ads will be redistributed as toxic fumes when they are burned.... This is not beneficial for anyone that is breathing that stuff. I'm going to say there are better methods of heating that are less intrusive to your lungs.

so how many hours would it take to get the equivalent to a bush cord of wood? This is way too time intensive which mean's NOT free. If you work a minimum wage job for the same amount of time, you could buy a cord of real wood and have money left over. This is the same as all the "extreme coupon" people who claim it's all free. No...When they work 8hours/day which they say it takes to do all the clipping and sorting and making shopping plans, and all you end up with is 400 toothbrushes and 80 bottles of dish soap, and baby formula when they have no kids, It's most definitely NOT free. They claim to "save" $20K/year but if they worked that min wage job, they would get 20K in cash that's available to spend on anything, including the items they got with coupons.

how much actual time did he spend making the log? not very long. if you are dumb enough to sit there and wait overnight for it to soak, and then sit there for it to dry out then, it would take long.. if you just walk up do a step then go about your normal routine, it won't consume as much as your precious time,,,

At 40 hours a week making $10/hr which is minimum wage where I live (NB, Canada) you would make $20800 per year, so he's technically right. But take taxes out of that and you're probably looking at closer to $15000. Then you can take out your travel and daycare expenses, leaving you with about half of what you earned. And that's if you're working full-time, which is unlikely in a minimum wage job since companies want to avoid giving out benefits.
But if you're doing that extreme couponing thing, you are working from home with no travel or daycare expenses. The people on that show are usually stay at home moms so being able to work from home is a big deal for them. Also we're not exactly looking at a great economic climate right now. Even minimum wage jobs can be hard to find, so these people would likely just be unemployed anyway. Add in to that the facts that minimum wage jobs are usually crappy jobs, and that you will rarely get full-time work and all of a sudden, couponing from home doesn't seem like such a bad idea. Now it doesn't show it on the show (likely to avoid IRS scrutiny), but I'm guessing the couponers are selling a good chunk of all the excess stuff they get.

I used 3" PVC and cut "log" into coins. Dipped the coins in white gas for half a second to help them light easier. My first attempt was a bust because I pressed the log too hard, and it wouldn't stay lit. since then they come out great. The wood stove in my garage really likes them too. you are right. In Germany we have to sort out our waste. Have to separate Plastic (cans, glas...) and paper, also biological waste from our garbage. And that is correct! Plastic, paper, glas and so are high processed products and it is easy to recycle them. So we are living in a clean nature in our small country. At the end all our caused pollutions are the small parts, occuping the rare free positions in our sphere. So every single person occupyes one of this rare positions. At the end there will come a collaps if we are not able to give nature the chance to work it out.

A cleaner version of this would be to use sawdust and leaves. I can tell that you'd have plenty of sawdust because I heard a circular saw in the background.
Paper is made with binders that hold the pulp ('sawdust') together, and this works by re-activating the binders. Sawdust and leaves would not make a mass that would stay in a solid chunk like paper does.
There is a type of pellet press that takes sawdust or fine shredded leaves and twigs and makes wood pellets, but it uses a lot of pressure, far more than sitting on a bucket!
Actually works even better with any free pulpable wood product. I add some bark chips to even out the burn since these can go out easy when burning only two or three,

This is a great idea. Especially if you have about 20 logs ready to go. Then make more logs weekly to keep up the supply. I don't think I have enough paper weekly to keep up.
