A thought I had while watching - rather than putting the shredded paper into the solid bucket and then decanting it into the perforated bucket, you could start with the perforated bucket inside a solid bucket, load the paper in and soak it. Then, you pull the perforated bucket out, dump the excess water, return it and compress it with the third bucket as you did. It would remove a step and limit double-handling/mess. Either way, the perforated bucket idea is a great one.
Great instructional video. But I gotta say my favorite parts were the interaction with the kids! I loved it all!

Kudos to you for reprocessing wastepaper into a useable product, and especially for sharing the experience with your kids. They may not remember this particular experience, but they will remember how Dad always included them when he worked so they could learn. I learned so much just holding the flashlight when my Dad was working on the cars.

I had one of those machines back in the 90's. They burnt well on the embers of the fire. Get the kids making those and sell them to the neighbourhood. Great video. Commented before the end of video and saw the burning part. Really does work. Another thing, I use dishwash and water to bind it.

Thank you so much. I like the two buckets idea to squeeze out the water. I saw another video and someone had gotten a food grade bucket that I already had holes in the bottom and the video said to use the same water over and over because then that water starts acting like glue to keep the paper together.
I've made a few bricks so far they turn well with the press but excited to see how mixing sawdust makes them burn better especially since many places just give sawdust away for free!

So i made a bunch of these last year to take camping with us. being very budget restricted i just used an old loaf pan and a mesh strainer. i find that they burn well with a hole through the center, and word around the internet is things like spent coffee and tea grounds, saw dust, and dried leaves added to the pulp mix can help add to burn time. Now being unemployed I'm gonna start making these again to sell. I've also read that if you want to burn these indoors in a fire place or woodstove to avoid using things with colored inks due to fumes that can make you sick.
The bricks that i made last year I got a burn time of 25 to 30 minutes. We used these for summer camp fires. They are very lightweight and easy to travel with. Thanks for the tips.
I have done that for about 10 years when I was owning my house , now i’m mostly on my sailboat so I sold the house , so for the paper brick I have a friend who has a company that insert other special offer in Walmart weekly paper , home-depot and many others , he receive all that paper from printer then it’s inserted by machine or manually by 10’S or workers then some machine fold it , strapped on pallets then ship on distributors futon be delivered at home , but the printer alway print a lot more , sometimes 3 or 4 pallets more and the distributor don’t want them so my friend sell it for paper recycling, so I can take couple palettes from time to time since he has about 100 palettes a weeks to sent to CASCADE CANADA , i’m in Quebec Canada to make various paper products, so to make my fire paper brick I took an old cement mixer and I welded some plate inside to make some more splash , so I load the mixer as mush as possible with paper and just the Wright amount of water , it took some time to figure the good quantity, and I let it turn for 3 hours it contain about 400 lbs of dry paper , yes it’s a medium mixer , to make the brick I took a 6X6 steel tube by 16 inches long and for pressing the pulp I have find in a scrap yard an old 10 ton hydraulic press , I bought a new 24 stroke cylinder and a power unit , so when the mixer has blended the pulp just write I pour it in a large tub and I scoop with a small bucket as much water as I can then I go to the press , with a big spatula I fill up the 6X16 tube full then I press until I was reaching 1200 psi on the gage , on the head of the cylinder there was a scare block welded that was 1/8 smaller than the inside of the 6X6 tube but by pressing the pulp some pulp was getting between both so I was lifting the ram about 6 inches putting 2 parallel then going down again then the paper brick was getting out or the 6X6 and the pulp between ram block and 6X6 was falling so I was able to lift the ram all the way up , lower the 6X6 , fill it full again and start and other cycle .
When I sold my house my friend bought my kit and he has 4 employees that made bricks 24/24 , he sell them , he has unlimited free paper all year and all the place to make them .
He press 4 bricks at the same time now , it requires 3000 psi to get a good compaction .
Just finished watching a video with the 4 bricks being made. Someone commented on this channel. So here I am. Lot of technical jargon in your setup. At the end of the day, its only for burning.

Add potatoe starch. If your burning in a stove it lowers how much soot sticks to the stove pipe. Also it slightly increases burn time due to the binding effect it has with the pulp. Add sugar or corn syrup and it will increase how hot it burns.

I don’t think so. The bricks are very lightweight, but they burn in the camp fire for a long time. (25-30 minutes). Clean burn plus recycling out of the landfill. 😜👍🏽thinks for the comment.

Question for you…why leave the paper to soak so long? Ive made these bricks after only 5 minutes of wetting the paper? My challenge is waiting for the bricks to dry. I wonder if putting them in a low temp oven would help them dry out faster? Do you have an opinion? Thanks!
Great question. I don’t really have a good answer for my two day wait I think I want all the paper to break down better. And for the drying process I use a hot tin roof in summer time. We get a very dry heat here in Nebraska. I think my wife would not be happy I use the oven for my dad experiments. 🤣 but it is crazy how much bigger we can accumulate just a month’s time. I am looking to get back into doing this meaning I want to get a wood stove for my home I like the convenience of pellets but it is much more difficult to make your own pellets than it is to make your own bricks I have one of the little Northern tool machines that you can use to press four bricks at a time
One concern I have for me the primary objective here is cost saving money That's the only point to me
Shredding is a definite necessity to get this done right in my opinion I haven't had a chance to collect any data yet so I'm wondering if maybe you've collected it?
So my question is how many BTUs do you get out of 19 lb worth of shredded material and how much electricity did it cost you to shred 19 lb of material? I'm looking into using solar power to run the shredder so that my cost for shredding is zero because one of my concerns is that the electricity used to do all the shredding would exceed the cost of simply buying that many BTUs of fuel

Could those bricks be used as insulation material?
I had one of those. The metal always bent when I squeezed the water out.
I know what you mean if you weren’t careful, it would slip off the metal pegs and I must have a bad accident. I was took it nice and easy.
Are these bricks safe for heating homes in wood burning stoves for inside a home?
Any extra soot? More so than wood?
Is there a concern with the ink/ chemicals in the paper/ cardboard?
Just trying to figure all this out so I can be very safe when using such bricks myself.
I just use them for camp fires. They don’t have smell. I don’t know a way to test them. In the summer we use a lot of them. We they burn they burn like wood. I know paper is wood but they smoke up just burn.
Did you use the shiney, ads or that kind of magazine paper? Don't. Not good for inside fires.
No shiny ads. I have tried adding sawdust to the mix & dry leaves also. I think this will work pretty well. Have you make any before.

They are right! If you don’t watch it, they were slip right off When you are pushing down on them. It sounds weird, but I still recommend them because I couldn’t find anything else that made bricks the size.

1) Burning newsprint is highly polluting. So much so that in Switzerland it is prohibited.
The current newsprint is a chemical compound very far from the starting matter, trees.
2) Better than newspapers, including magazines, books, etc... are put in bins and recycled to make more paper.

They don't actually recycle the paper anyway. It's been proven a scam over and over again
When you soak the paper in water it washes out the ink so when you burn the paper it’s just like burning wood
Recycled paper goes into the landfill unless there is a program at the time that a business buys and/or takes it you can call your local waste management and ask them yourself. Not only is this actually recycling it but it also makes you less reliant on the government. Win win
