Nice video. Way to focus on supporting new riders. Your "eyes up" and "be sure to breathe" advice is HUGE. Three more tips I'll throw in the mix: 1) elbows out gives you much more control (it lets the front wheel track better and adds a kind of suspension) 2) consciously put all your weight on the outside pedal in turns (especially helpful in loose stuff) 3) I work hard on un-weighting the handlebars in loose gravel turns to prevent washouts. I try to barely hold them. It takes time to learn (your brain wants to grab them tight) but it's super helpful. Best of luck growing your gravel tribe.
for sure all these are solid tips as well! I’m planning on building it into a series where I can give more tips so I will certainly include these as well! Thank you so much for your comment! Stoked you’re here!
I recently moved from my Trek mountain bike to a Trek Checkpoint SL, gravel is soooo much fun! It is very similar to riding my adventure motorcycle and your tips are spot on. My adventure motorcycle riding instructor focuses on head up all the time, this is the biggest challenge for off-road motorcyclists!
Hi Erin, I'm a much older rider that recently did the move to gravel riding. You gave really good advice in your video. I would add that running tubeless is a plus. It has saved me roadside tire repairs! Also to allow the bike to move underneath you without fear, just stay relaxed. Some roads are worse than others, so tire pressure as you demonstrated is key. Take an efficient tire pump with you to re-inflate if the roads smooth out. I usually ride mixed tarmac and gravel so sometimes I choose a higher pressure. Gravel can open up a whole new world of riding, even in your own area. I've had great rides on roads I'd never ridden in my home turf even though I've lived there for years. It brings out the adventurer in you! Enjoy and ride safe. Cheers, and greetings from Canada.🤟
Yes to Tubeless tires always on gravel!!!! I really enjoy making these tutorials and have included more tips and demos in my others:) Everything you said is 100 % spot on!!! Appreciate you!!
My cycling started out with road riding on a fairly nice road bike, and then I transitioned over to mountain biking (which was a whole different world when it came to cycling---and it was hard to learn the skills needed, but I got there, with time and lots of practice). Then I got interested in the gravel biking phenomenon, and discovered quickly that my MTB skill set transferred seamlessly into gravel riding. What you said about not getting too focused on visual distractions, and making sure you're looking far enough ahead to make better line choices, and when to speed up, or slow down, or when to use the breaks and when not to, etc., was right out of mountain biking. Nice video.
Thank you so much Ed! I ride a mountain bike as well and I completely agree that the skills for MTB transfer over. Ultimately riding off road is such a different experience and it takes such a long time to feel confident and relaxed in your body… I know I will be working on it forever! Thank you so much for taking the time to comment and I appreciate you Sharing your experience!!
I did a 50 mile gravel ride a few weeks back and it was 19f.. our bottles froze at mile 10!!! it was something else. On the plus side, our toes hands went numb so they didn't hurt :D :D
Impressive. You also have a talent for covering some key points and saying the right things. Hopefully you provide inspiration for more women to enjoy riding bikes. It's good exercise and the fun never wears off, it just gets to be more fun.
Looks awesome where ever you're riding. Living in Illinois, you have to drive a bit to avoid the sprawl to get to good gravel but mostly farmland, nothing like your view. Love the 4 Runner, too:)
It’s a really fun trail for sure! I love riding all 3 road, mtb, and gravel because each experience is so different! at first I was like wait I don’t understand why I would ride gravel when I have a mountain bike, but then after I got it I did a few endurance races on my gravel bike and it’s really fun to go fast and push a lighter bike off-road. I have an XC mtb and I absolutely love it, but that bike can be pretty heavy to push on straightaways/climbs and for long periods of time and I like long days on the bike!! thank you so much for your comment!
Gravel is like a whole new lease on cycling. I’d invite you out to Kansas for one of the premier gravel events known as UNBOUND. There are various distances and a vast range of gravel from “hero” to “baby head”. First time to see one of your videos…..not the last.
Thank you so much! I’m so stoked to have you on the channel… I am most certainly familiar with Unbound and it’s on my bucket list!! I am hoping to get out there next year
@@erinohagain9841 Even IF you miss the lottery, you should come and participate in the event. Something abut 4000+ rolling out early in the morning. And you can ride other gravel around Emporia just for kicks. Happy to be here.
Erin! Great job. Looked like a fantastic ride. The rock peace sign is great! I actually have one built in my yard! Rad! Great tips too. My only question is….where was the bread?!?! 😃 Kudos, Erin!
It’s a disorder that’s affects circulation in your extremities in extreme cold. It can make your toes and fingers feel like they are in a fire place, excruciating pain and cause them to turn white or purple. It’s the worst!!
@@erinohagain9841 Hence the Saran Wrap! Seriously, that sounds awful! It sure would constitute living in a warm climate or a seat bag full of hand warmers! Ride well young lady.
@@erinohagain9841 Sounds painful! Is there a fear of developing further into frostbite? I guess it's something you've got to be very careful about in cold climates. Take care.

I will!!! Def One of my favorite spots! What’s your favorite route out there!?
That seemed like a good route, a little bit of everything
It's such a great route...technically more of a mountain bike trail at parts but totally doable on gravel bikes!

How does your mix taste as you increase the quantity?
It definitely tastes sweeter but not overpowering or artificial tasting...its the best mix I've tried! Allergen free
What's with the Michael Jackson one glove homage?
haha...I took off my glove when I was adjusting the camera and it fell out of my jersey pocket...it happens :)
