Anyone who grew up in Canada, even in non french speaking places, are used to the raisin = grape, because in Canda all packaging has to be in both English and French. So on grape jello for example, it will say grape jello on one side, and jello raisin (or something like that) on the other side.
One word that I find interesting is person/personne. In the USA, a person is an individual. In French, Personne means no one!! I love this! There are, of course, other ways to use it in French, but this is my favorite.
For the new aspiring francophones: I tried to flirt once in French and I wanted to tell a guy that I thought he was hot (attractive) so I said something like « Je pense que tu es chaud » BIG MISTAKE. Temperature takes avoir, so if you're literally hot or cold "j'ai froid" or "j'ai chaud" but to call someone "hot" as a measure of attractiveness DOES NOT literally translate. Just say beau/belle or sexy. Using être with chaud(e) translate to horny in English. >_> So I tried to flirt and tell this guy I thought he was really attractive but he thought I was accusing him of being horny and thus calling him a pig...
my snapchat is set in french (i'm a native speaker) so i get this unconfortable feeling every time a "chat" is referred to on the app. They chose to not translate the concept into "message" so it provides with gems such as "X vous a envoyé un chat" that looks like " X sent you a cat " or my favourite "X a supprimé un chat " which i almost always read as "X deleted a cat" :') i want to note that un tchat and the verb tchatter existe(d) in colloquial french to mean a conversation on the internat or maybe even an informal discussion. It sounds a bit outdated to me because it's something i heard a lot more as a kid and english loanwords in tech tend to be more closely related to their original english counterparts and are either a concept where we don't have a commonly used french word to refer to but that got more popular with the rise of social media (liker, spoiler, selfie, binger- pronounced binge-é-)
Justin Lavoie I know that you feel that you speak French in Quebec. But your pronunciation is so twisted that I have the greatest difficulty to understand it. So, I don’t want to be nasty to you, but the pronunciation of Canadian French should not be taken into consideration.
The only thing I know ( that a polyglot taught me ) is to never ever learn languages, word by word. Unless you're studying grammar, if you want to speak the language, don't translate word by word.
