After I got home, it took me about an hour to screw it all together and it's up on my wall and working great. I immediately used it to trim the back of my neck so I don't look like a wolf-man. First THANK YOU!!! I put this system together with 1black and 2 white mirrors from 2 Walmart’s. 🤣 neither had the door hang system. I went with the French cleat by ook 5 or 6 inch from home depot. I bought 2 to be safe ($8 a piece) They are a picture hanger system. I just remove the mirror when done. Amazon has a French z clip that looks like it holds better, but I was in a pinch. Sorry for rambling thank you so much!

Thanks so much for this! Hello from May 2020 aka Covid Nightmare! Since I'm avoiding the salons I'm bleaching my own roots at home. It's very difficult for me do this without seeing the back of my head. This is a perfect setup not only for haircuts but hair dyeing! :D
Brah I'm actually gonna try this lol. I'm a barber/cosmo and I always cut my own hair with a handheld mirror and I'm getting tired of it! Haha I need something but will not spend 150 for mirrors and led lights haha this i can try
thanks for the detailed video bro. gonna move into my own apartment and gonna do this. one thing I would recommend to everybody is to get white mirrors that way the light will bounce off the white and it'll make it much brighter compared to the black which will absorb some of the light.
I didn't have a bump put on the fold. And the tape cracked. I also went up and down the sides. So I have room to move up the side of the plugin and reconnect after repair. Can you explain how to cut out a section and attach the two sections back together?
Update: Got all my supplies except the door hanging hardware from walmart. I asked 3 employees and all of them couldn’t tell me where i could find them nor if they were even in stock lol, will try again today. Turned out really nice, my only complaint is the screws coming through the back side. I should’ve bought bigger felt pads. Other than that, great tutorial and it was super easy. Well worth it if you are looking to save a ton of money.
I finally made mine today. I just have to find a place and a way to hang it. I have no LED lights, I might add that or I might not. But I want a battery operated light of some sort instead of a plug-in with all the cords and stuff. I did struggle to put my mirror system together. Because, the wood was so crazy hard that it was almost impossible to screw in, especially with a normal screwdriver. I almost gave up. Perhaps it would have been easier with a drill. Anyway, it is finished, and I will use it very, very soon, because I desperately need a haircut! :-) I just hope it works great.
Many thanks to you and the people you learned from. Bought the same items and followed the instructions and I mine is setup (no LEDs yet but maybe later).

I was really considering making one but as I was browsing the self cut system web site they had a sale I purchased the full size one with out lights for 39.95.
Yeah the cost has really come down over the years especially with all the Chinese copy cats on Amazon. I’d say it’s only worth it now if you want the ability to fix it yourself and also enjoy DIY projects. I would say this is also higher quality
This is sweet but selfcut system prices seem to have dropped a lot and these mirrors seem to be harder to get. Time taken to get the supplies, do the work vs buying the selfcut system now, I am thinking buying it is the better route. Nice build though.
YussefWhy415 I think you may have made a mistake. You may have put the hinge on backwards. I showed all the steps in the video on how to do it correctly.
Great video. Anyone have any suggestions on longer over the door hangars? I live in a house with big ass doors. The doors are about 8 feet so theres no way the one he used in the video will be long enough. Another possibility could be hanging it over the bathroom curtain rod but I would need something more round and not flat like the one in this video
Max Pill you could use the second method I showed for hanging the mirrors and drill straight into a dry wall with dry wall anchors. Or maybe devise some type of extension for the over the door hanger.
Max Pill idk if you have a drill or a saw but you could get a long thin piece of wood, drill holes in both ends, screw in the top to the over the door hanger with a nut and bolt and leave the hole in the bottom open for the screw hook.
I commented earlier, you can purchase a Target dorm room full body mirror that hangs on the door. It should have door hanging equipment in it. Right now they are on sale for back to school for like $7-10. Just a tip. Good luck!
I checked my local Walmart but they have none of the mirrors in stock. My local michaels has 12”x12” square mirrors available but they don’t come with frames. Any suggestions?
Question. How do you keep them from moving so easily like to keep them from swaying back n forth while cutting yourself or are they pretty firm in any position you set them to?
Chris Headley TH-cam comments are not in chronological order, so that doesn’t help lol Edit: I had to change comments to newest first and scroll all the way down. 👍🏽
If the mirrors are not staying in place this could mean 3 things, all of which are caused by gravity. Problem #1: The screw hooks are not level and cause the mirrors to favor 1 position. Problem #2: When you installed the brackets the mirrors might not be parallel, tilting the mirrors in 1 direction. Problem #3: While the mirrors are hanging on the door, if the back of the mirror is not flat against the door, the mirror will tilt forward slightly, causing the mirrors to not stay in place. Solution: if you install 3 eye hooks like I did with my permanent set up and make sure everything is level then the mirrors shouldn't move. My permanent mirrors always stay where I put them. Another solution could be to get hinges that do not rotate as easily. Although, that may be hard to find since hinges are designed to rotate lol. If we could find a way to "stiffin" up the hinges that would work One of the problems is that the over the door kit is cheap and when combined with the screw hooks you might get Problem #3. Since they are cheap, you can bend the metal and hopefully correct the position so the back of the middle mirror stays flat up against the door. I had Problem #1 and once I made the screw hooks level it stopped the mirrors from moving astray. Hope this helps.
I cut a cork in half an super glue it on the bottom of the center mirror so it's level and the mirror does swing you guys got some sophisticated stuff going my junk rachet 😂
I read your Google Doc & was able to find just about everything except the door hangers. Can’t find the ones with the holes for mounting😕 Btw, there are some adjustable ones.
Has anybody found the over-the-door hangers available for sale in the UK? It seems like they just don't exist here... Wondering if I'm going to need to import it from the US!
Hey man! Thanks for the video. I built mine a little differently (trying to just hang the middle mirror on a scew. The mirrors keep closing on me. They don't stay open. Any suggestions?
Could someone help me with the recommended measures to do so? Do you know the size of the original self cut system? I would greatly appreciate your help.
Here's a materials update as of 4/18/20 and new suggestions. Walmart had the mirrors but not the over the door mirror hook/hanger. Walmart appears to be no longer carrying the mirror hook. Home Depot had everything Headley mentioned. So here's what I did tonight. Do not buy/use the hooks that screw into the top of the middle mirror. Instead, just use the built in wall hanger on the back of the middle mirror. Put a nail in a flat wall or door and hang the mirrors on the wall using the built in wall hanger strip on the back of the middle mirror. You will have a problem keeping the mirrors level and open when in use and side mirrors are opened out. You either have to keep adjusting the middle mirror on the wall for levelness or, as I did, use two push pins in the wall on both the bottom right and left sides of the middle mirror. Small nails or tacks would also work. These hold the middle mirror in place when the side mirrors are extended. Works like a charm. I did not use LED lights. I'm not handy with tools so you might come up with something simpler or possibly find an over the door mirror hook/hanger. Home Depot didn't have any either. Good luck. Thank you Chris Headley!
Over door hangers are out of stock Walmart online with store only availability. I checked two Walmarts, found none, and proceeded with plan B! Thanks again.
How’s it going Chris thanks for the Video do you have an alternate for Mainstays Over-the-Door Mirror Hardware Set? I’m having a hard time finding the hangers in my area. Thanks man!
Having a lot of trouble finding such cheap mirrors in the UK. Most around that size seem to be £14-30 ($18-38). Cheapest I can find is an £8 ($10) one from Argos. Anyone have any advice?
Just bought 3 from Amazon total of just under £30 delivered for 14" x 11". The 12 x 10" should also do the job nicely www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B084YYKSHJ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fab_wYMAFbMERN40G
@@Ramesiel just hung mine up now. Used plasterboard metal plugs in my hollow bathroom door, was a bit nervous if it'd work but the mirrors weigh a total of 4kg which seems fine. Screwed 3 d-ring hooks into the mirror. I bought the wrong cable clips n have a few days for the right ones before putting the led lights on, overall well pleased
@@ar04azr Glad it worked out well for you! Do you think 14x11" is a good size? The Argos ones are out of stock so I'm probably going to go with the Amazon ones that you linked. I'm wondering if maybe the bigger 16x12" size might be better?
With the barbershops being closed I really needed something like this. I am in the process of build one right now, but for the life of me I cannot figure out you got the third mirror on the end (far right) to open up completely flat like that with the tee hinges because mine will not open all the way due to the bend needed for the closing operation of it. Did you run into the same issue in the building process?
@@chrisheadley808 mine did not lay flat the way yours did @ 10:55. But I coincidentally ended up putting the bracket on backwards so that now that it does.
i have a question why didnt you install the open screw hooks on your first system? you have closed circular screw hooks instead. Also which system do you rather prefer your first system with big mirrors or your second one with smaller mirrors? your advice is much appreciated i would like to build my own so i would really respect your opinion please
The smaller system with the over the door hanger is portable. I prefer using the bigger system and it is the one I use most of the time for cutting my hair at home. It stays in one spot because the circlular screw hooks have to hang on a screw that's drilled into a wall. I prefer the bigger system but it is not portable. The open screw hooks allow for the over the door hanger to be used which makes it portable. The circle screws cannot be used with the over the door hanger.
@@chrisheadley808 Thank you for the fast reply and your insight, i will opt for bigger mirrors so i can see my head more clearly especially for when i am cutting the top of my head. Good job on your self made systems it looks really well built
I can’t find that “Door Hang Set” anywhere. Can you tell me the actual name so I can look online?? All I get are regular door hangs with a hook at the end. Not that one with holes.
Miguel Ramos just scroll all the way down. The comment was by highlandlows. All you gotta do is keep the mirror parallel to the door. To do this, you can use two wine bottle corks, cut them to the length you need, and glue them to the back.
I made this system a while ago but the side mirrors don't stay put if I want them to be positioned at a specific angle. For example, suppose I want a 120 degree angle between the center mirror and the right mirror while the system is hung on the door. I move the side mirror with my hands to create that 120 degree angle, but as soon as I let go of it with my hands, it sways to one side or the other and I no longer have the desired angle. There seems to be two possible issues: 1) The tension in the hinge is insufficient 2) The hooks screwed into the top of the center mirror are no longer even height (One has come out a bit further than the other one due to wear and tear and possibly a poorly made pilot hole). Have you dealt with this? Any tips?
If you scroll down you there’s a comment where we talk about it. It’s moving because the back of the mirror is not parallel with the door. Our solution was to super glue 2 corks on the back to ensure the mirror is parallel

Antisocialist awesome. I'm glad you were able to modify it and make it work. Im interested to see how the French cleat hanging system looks. How's it hold up?
LED's put on today, HUUUGE thanks to u Chris!!!!!
Azhar glad I could help! 😄
Planning on building one of these to make bleaching my roots at home easier!
Abbey Lane good luck!
what a well thought out informational video. Thanks so much for making this!
Glad I could help! 😄
You upped everyone's haircut game w this . Good stuff man. I wasn't sure if I was supposed to get 3 separate lights but ur vid helped . gonna buy the same one u suggested. Thx for the vid
Thanks so much for this! Hello from May 2020 aka Covid Nightmare! Since I'm avoiding the salons I'm bleaching my own roots at home. It's very difficult for me do this without seeing the back of my head. This is a perfect setup not only for haircuts but hair dyeing! :D
Sarah McFadden I'm glad I could help! 😁
Great video! I can’t find the door hanger. Do you think command strips Hooks would work?
I saw the door hangers the other day. It’s in the mirror section. You can try the command strips but they might not be strong enough
Ended up making this, minus the LEDs. Works great and I gave myself first haircut. Thanks Homie. 🤙🏼
How pleased were you with the cut?
@@thurdysixoQuite pleased. It's worth the time and effort.
Brah I'm actually gonna try this lol. I'm a barber/cosmo and I always cut my own hair with a handheld mirror and I'm getting tired of it! Haha I need something but will not spend 150 for mirrors and led lights haha this i can try
iAmJayC234 it's so worth it trust me. You won't be disappointed.😁
thanks for the detailed video bro. gonna move into my own apartment and gonna do this. one thing I would recommend to everybody is to get white mirrors that way the light will bounce off the white and it'll make it much brighter compared to the black which will absorb some of the light.
Ruff Prophet Productions The mirrors one job is to reflect light. The boarder color won’t make much of a difference.
Hey, very informative video! Is it gonna be suitable with 30x30 cm (12x12 inches) mirrors?
It should work!
I appreciate the tutorial, Chris! I made my own trifold and it turned out great. I can't wait to use it on my first self cut
Yeeeeeeet Glad I could help! 😄
I didn't have a bump put on the fold. And the tape cracked. I also went up and down the sides. So I have room to move up the side of the plugin and reconnect after repair. Can you explain how to cut out a section and attach the two sections back together?
epic video, gonna go buy my supplies tomorrow. thanks man
Update: Got all my supplies except the door hanging hardware from walmart.
I’m pretty crafty I think this is my next project
I finally made mine today. I just have to find a place and a way to hang it. I have no LED lights, I might add that or I might not. But I want a battery operated light of some sort instead of a plug-in with all the cords and stuff.
I did struggle to put my mirror system together. Because, the wood was so crazy hard that it was almost impossible to screw in, especially with a normal screwdriver. I almost gave up. Perhaps it would have been easier with a drill.
Anyway, it is finished, and I will use it very, very soon, because I desperately need a haircut! :-) I just hope it works great.
R. Thomassen awesome man! You could easily make it battery powered, you'd just have to find the right connected to the LEDs
Many thanks to you and the people you learned from. Bought the same items and followed the instructions and I mine is setup (no LEDs yet but maybe later).
Update: after first haircut using this the LEDs are gonna be essential. Even on a well lit room my normal lights are no good.
Your video is really detailed and loved the way you showed us if we have a question or want to know how you ended up doing it and showed up give you a like🔥 nice set up
Can you post a link to the door hanger set? Having an issue finding it.

Nice job bro.. i also make magic mirror.. but im using T5 LED..
Chris headly where did I you buy those LED’S and also name for the mirror please. Thank you
really great video tutotrial, but if you dont mind me asking how do you get your hairs off the carpet of your room??
albert re already addressed this in a comment below 😁
i used cabinet hinges instead of t hinges that way i dont gotta bend nothing
What kind? Can you please share
What size you used
answer the question you dunce
Where do you get the Mirrors 🪞 I can’t find in my local Walmart or online I really like those small one??
The only place I’ve been able to find them at is Walmart.
Have you found hinges that help keep the mirrors in position rather than a balancing act?
Not sure what you mean here
@@chrisheadley808 I eventually found it. Look up torque hinges.
This is sweet but selfcut system prices seem to have dropped a lot and these mirrors seem to be harder to get. Time taken to get the supplies, do the work vs buying the selfcut system now, I am thinking buying it is the better route. Nice build though.
doesn't make sense from a money standpoint anymore. It is a fun project tho!
How did you get the mirror with the bent tee hinge to fully lay open? Mine seems to stop at around 150 degrees.
YussefWhy415 I think you may have made a mistake. You may have put the hinge on backwards. I showed all the steps in the video on how to do it correctly.
I clamped a binder clip to the side of the mirror to weave the LED's wire through. Keeps the weight off the LED strip and it still closes.
Salmaan Shikari do what you gotta do to make it work 🤷♂️👍
Salmaan Shikari can you do a video
Great video. Anyone have any suggestions on longer over the door hangars? I live in a house with big ass doors. The doors are about 8 feet so theres no way the one he used in the video will be long enough. Another possibility could be hanging it over the bathroom curtain rod but I would need something more round and not flat like the one in this video
Max Pill you could use the second method I showed for hanging the mirrors and drill straight into a dry wall with dry wall anchors. Or maybe devise some type of extension for the over the door hanger.
@@chrisheadley808 Thanks. Its a rented house though so no drilling into walls. I'll look into some type of door hanger extension.
Max Pill idk if you have a drill or a saw but you could get a long thin piece of wood, drill holes in both ends, screw in the top to the over the door hanger with a nut and bolt and leave the hole in the bottom open for the screw hook.
I can’t find the door hangers anywhere do you have a link by chance. Awesome vid. Thanks
jeff odin www.walmart.com/ip/Mainstays-Mirror-Over-the-Door-Hooks/275889169
I commented earlier, you can purchase a Target dorm room full body mirror that hangs on the door. It should have door hanging equipment in it. Right now they are on sale for back to school for like $7-10. Just a tip. Good luck!
Thank you all assembling now I’ll post video when done
I checked my local Walmart but they have none of the mirrors in stock. My local michaels has 12”x12” square mirrors available but they don’t come with frames. Any suggestions?
Alan Simon go to another walmart
Thank you so much you just saved me $200
Very detailed yet simple enough to follow along instructions. Good job.
Question. How do you keep them from moving so easily like to keep them from swaying back n forth while cutting yourself or are they pretty firm in any position you set them to?
AD I answered this in the first comment ever posted on this video
Chris Headley TH-cam comments are not in chronological order, so that doesn’t help lol
Edit: I had to change comments to newest first and scroll all the way down. 👍🏽
Do you have a link to the mirrors? Or the name of the mirror brand and type?
www.walmart.com/ip/Mainstays-Ms-16x16-Mirror-Black/502021044
Thanks great video!!!! The. Only problem I’m having is find a over the door hanger.
What hinges do you have on your original “big” mirrors setup
I think I used 3 inch strap hinges
www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-3-in-Zinc-Plated-Strap-Hinge-2-Pack-15289/202034111
How are the mirrors holding up? I’m concerned about the wood frame supporting the weight of the mirrors
202arian holds up great. No problems here.
Are those mirror frames plastic or wood?
PRISE plastic type of material (not a hard plastic)
I can’t find the over the door hooks from Walmart . Do you recommend a different type of hangers?
Many tanks! Gonna try it soon
That's a nice one dude. I have a question though does the 16" mirror means 16" including the frame or is it just the mirror itself?
With the frame
@@chrisheadley808 Thanks man
You didn't mention where you got the mirrors. I haven't been able to find them online.
Listen at 1:29
Came out great brother ! Only thing left to perfect .. is.. to somehow get the side mirrors to stay put. Maybe stronger hinges ? 🤷♂️
If we could find a way to "stiffin" up the hinges that would work
One of the problems is that the over the door kit is cheap and when combined with the screw hooks you might get Problem #3.
@@ZavierGreen Genius. Totally solves the problem.
Yo does anyone know where i can get these size mirrors?? I literally went to two Walmarts and couldn’t find it
How can you reconnect the led strip on the mirrors to more of the strip on the spool after cutting it at a designated cutting spot?
Chamblezin1 is this what you are talking about?

Thanks for the tutorial. I brought the larger mirrors you showed at the end for mine this was very helpful
B Money the large mirrors are nice, make sure to use 3 hinges instead of 2 on each mirror 👍
I can’t find mirrors like that anywhere, I have everything else but the mirrors. I looked at Walmart in store and online, target, and Home Depot. 😫
They only sell them at walmart. I would recommend going to a few different walmarts, im sure one of them will have them
Red I got them!! Thank you. Cut my hair last night and it was so much easier lol.
I read your Google Doc & was able to find just about everything except the door hangers. Can’t find the ones with the holes for mounting😕 Btw, there are some adjustable ones.
GhostlysmokeTony it looks like the mirror hardware set is an in-store purchase item
Chris Headley Can’t believe you replied right away! Thanks for letting me know tho. Used it sitting down & it’s GREAT. Appreciate you🙌
Has anybody found the over-the-door hangers available for sale in the UK? It seems like they just don't exist here... Wondering if I'm going to need to import it from the US!
Excellent video and instruction! Thanks!!
Jenny Choy glad I could help! 😄
Hey man! Thanks for the video. I built mine a little differently (trying to just hang the middle mirror on a scew. The mirrors keep closing on me. They don't stay open. Any suggestions?
Zain Seyal look at the first comment posted on this video. It addresses this problem
What is the size of mirror., Hight and length.Thanking you for sharing
Ashok Nikumbh 16 inch by 16 inch
Can you get the mirrors online???
I can’t find cheap mirrors anywhere. Dope vid!!
Anthony Pizza I don't think you can buy em online. Although I haven't looked that hard.. 🤷♂️
Do you know if they sell the adapter at home depot by any chance??
Geoothebarber never looked, I doubt it, but you can ask. If they sell led strips they might be in that section.
Thx for the tutorial, really appreciate it brooo!!!
Could someone help me with the recommended measures to do so?
Do you know the size of the original self cut system? I would greatly appreciate your help.
Ariel Herrera Simanca why does it matter?
@@chrisheadley808 As otherwise its harder to get a 360degree reflection
Glad I could help 😃. I was at walmart the other day and saw the over the door hangers, maybe they were just out of stock.
Over door hangers are out of stock Walmart online with store only availability. I checked two Walmarts, found none, and proceeded with plan B! Thanks again.
Great video. Very detailed. Thanx.
How’s it going Chris thanks for the Video do you have an alternate for Mainstays Over-the-Door Mirror Hardware Set? I’m having a hard time finding the hangers in my area. Thanks man!
lunahe1 I don't, perhaps you could find some other type of over the door hanger.
Cool vid. How do you go about the adjustment/moving the mirrors without it moving freely?
leeson187 when all the mirrors are level the mirrors stay where you put them
Chris Headley I see thanks for the rapid reply
Having a lot of trouble finding such cheap mirrors in the UK. Most around that size seem to be £14-30 ($18-38). Cheapest I can find is an £8 ($10) one from Argos. Anyone have any advice?
Just bought 3 from Amazon total of just under £30 delivered for 14" x 11". The 12 x 10" should also do the job nicely www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B084YYKSHJ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fab_wYMAFbMERN40G
£8 Argos seem decent, the ones I linked you arrived today n are perfect for making this
@@ar04azr Hey, thanks for getting back to me. That Amazon one looks pretty good. Did you finish building yours already?
Maybe a dumb question but did you inserted he screws it without a drill? I mean by hand only?
I screwed in everything by hand 🤙
do you have a link for the mirrors?
With the barbershops being closed I really needed something like this. I am in the process of build one right now, but for the life of me I cannot figure out you got the third mirror on the end (far right) to open up completely flat like that with the tee hinges because mine will not open all the way due to the bend needed for the closing operation of it. Did you run into the same issue in the building process?
Mack7mle what do you mean it won't open up all the way? You probably put the hinge on backwards.
@@chrisheadley808 mine did not lay flat the way yours did @ 10:55. But I coincidentally ended up putting the bracket on backwards so that now that it does.
Dude your the greatest thank you for this video
i have a question why didnt you install the open screw hooks on your first system? you have closed circular screw hooks instead.
I can’t find mirrors that cheap at Walmart ! Can you include a link to where you can order it.
artbrutnewyork prices differ online

Where can I find the mirrors I checked Walmart no luck
That is the only place I know where you can get em
Man so awesome thanks for the video
Leonel Noriega glad I could help!
I can’t find that “Door Hang Set” anywhere. Can you tell me the actual name so I can look online?? All I get are regular door hangs with a hook at the end. Not that one with holes.
What are the dimentions of the mirror you are using?
I think they are 16 inches by 16 inches
What brand are those led?
How to u keep the mirrors in place without swinging open. And stay in place
Miguel Ramos I addressed this problem in the very first comment made on this video.
@@chrisheadley808 ok will check . Thank u
@@chrisheadley808 can't find it. Thinking of putting a thumb Tack on opposite side with a string and tieing it
Miguel Ramos just scroll all the way down. The comment was by highlandlows. All you gotta do is keep the mirror parallel to the door. To do this, you can use two wine bottle corks, cut them to the length you need, and glue them to the back.
Can you dim the lighting??
You can if you have a dimming knob on your power cord. I went over it in the video
