My first fighting game was DOA2, and one of the reasons it took over our friend group and brought in new players was specifically because anybody could get lucky and win a round. This made it much more approachable to new players who would otherwise get stomped 100-0 in a game like SF4. If you wanted to see who actually better in DOA it was just going to be a first to 5 or some longer set.

In some games you just have to pick the top tiers, a la 3S, because they’ll always be the clear winners. Starting from sf5 onward, it’s more accessible to reach a higher level. This is where people complain the most. I see it as a necessary evolution. Where would the franchise go if it stayed the same? Did the fgc dark ages not teach us anything? The more volatile the game, the more players can steal wins, the more players that win, the more players that keep playing. The games are volatile on purpose to have more players win. This is the fundamental issue with new Street Fighter because being a great game is not the goal, having a lot of players is.

Street Fighter 4 is definitely the best Street Fighter series of all time, and had the most hype tournaments. It also was the last time the game felt like street fighter. Street Fighter 5 and 6 just has stupid mechanics that allow you to skip neutral for free and not think as much. Obviously SF4 has some character exceptions, but it was more of their tool kit rather than a game mechanic. The game was also extremely technical with the option selects, best character variety too. Lastly, let’s be honest, it revived the FGC from the dead. I heard the stories of how dead EVO 2008 was. SF4 changed everything.
I'm older and I can tell you that I felt like an outsider playing third strike back in the day. For the most part fighting games were dead and the only popular ones were Tekken and soul caliber, everything else was considered bad, even mvc2. People back then thought the music was stupid and going to 4 buttons was weird. There was also a huge stigma of having 2D or sprite based games back during the PS2 era because they felt "old" or like "old Nintendo games" referencing 8-16 bit as old.
