The bassist Geezer Butler wrote most of the lyrics for Black Sabbath during the Ozzy years, I believe he was battling some depression during this time. And yes, you definitely need to check out "War Pigs" live in Paris.
The UNholy trinity was Black Sabbath, Led Zep. and Deep Purple. I'd love to see you react to Black Sabbath live in Paris 1970 to see them in true form. War Pigs and Fairies Wear Boots are great. Bill Ward is fantastic live.
Imagine someone who lived through the 1960s with all of it's folksy love music, the Beatles, Peter Paul & Mary etc, and then 1970 rolls over and suddenly they've got this song blasting in their faces. It would have blown some people's minds.
I met Ozzy and his family at a movie theater in Century City, California. Me my family was standing behind him- I didn't realize it was him until I saw the tattoo on his fingers-OZZY. I said to my husband quietly- it's Ozzy Osborn - he turned around and said hello. We talked for a few minutes about the movie we were seeing. He was a cute dad got up and went to the concession stand to get snacks for his kids.
When Black Sabbath finished recording their album they were just short a minute and a half and needed a filler. So they just started jamming a song they never played before to fill it up. That song was Paranoid.
BLACK SABBATH are THE FATHERS OF ALL HEAVY METAL. Guitarist:Tony Iommi, Bass guitarist:Terrance Geezer Butler, Drummer: Bill Ward, and lead singer: Ozzy Osbourne. The masters of metal.
Ozzy's pseudonym is "The Prince of Darkness". He was on heavy LSD, Qualudes and other psychedelics for most of his life, yet put him on a stage and he goes from the mumbling old man to a legend. 🐐.
They got the name "Black Sabbath" from a horror movie in the early 60's Black Sabbath. One member said isnt it funny people will go pay money to watch a movie that scares them. Why dont we write that kind of music" All 4 came from the same town with steel factories & crumbled buildings that were bombed in WWII.Ozzy & the guitarist (Tony Iommi) went to school together. They became the Godfathers of Metal
Ozzy has spoken on the ending lyrics to Paranoid by saying, "for years, I thought Jimi Hendrix in Purple Haze, sang, "EXCUSE ME, WHILE I KISS THIS GUY"."
This is 54 years old and still a awesome song. This is on of the songs that no one can cover and do it better then the original. He did bite a bat head off but he did not know it was a real bat at the time. Black Sabbath and Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin open the flood gates for a lot of the greats. Ozzy and Dio were both lead sings for Black Sabbath and both had unique Voices.
*"Black Sabbath - Symptom Of the Universe"* killer Ozzy vocals!!! Is one of my top five songs to-date and heard this song on a tape-loop since mid 70s - *until just now I'd heard an incorrect lyric too* - blown away!
I’ve had the pleasure of seeing Black Sabbath twice….25 years apart! First as a teenager and then I took a group of teenagers to their reunion Tour. Amazing! And believe me when they play “Sweet Leaf” everyone gets a contact buzz
WHEN IT COMES TO ROCK/METAL , THEY WROTE EVERYTHING THEY PLAYED UNLESS THEY WERE DOING A COVER... AND P.AYING INSTRUMENTS WAS THE CHERRY ON TOP... REAL TALENT...
In 2013, Geezer Butler (the songwriter) told Mojo magazine that the song "Paranoid" was about "depression" "because I didn't really know the difference between depression and paranoia. It's a drug thing; most people become completely paranoid about people when they're using drugs, was my observation, and that ends up in prolonged depression for most people even after withdrawal. The song was originally only intended as a 3-minute gap filler for the second studio album, to get to the usual length for LPs at the time. During the lunch break on the recording day (most of the first and second albums were recorded live in the studio in two days), Tony Iommi asked his bandmates if the riff could be used for this. Geezer Butler on the further course of events "We basically needed a three-minute filler for the album. Tony came up with the riff. "I quickly wrote the lyrics and Ozzy sang them live into the microphone as he read them during the studio recording."
This song is obviously a must review. Definitely a great track, and one of their most recognizable tunes, but I hope you'll revisit the original "Ozzy Era" Black Sabbath again soon. You'll find the further you dig into their B -sides, the closer you get to the genius of Sabbath...I recommend "Into the Void", "Behind the Wall of Sleep", "Hand of Doom, "Faires Wear Boots", "Lord of this World", "Wheels of Confusion", "Thrill of it All" and "Megalomania" (and believe me, it was hard to stop myself at only these) not only are all these songs masterpieces, but when you take into consideration the years that all these tracks dropped, It's undeniable how ahead of their time Black Sabbath was, and how they created another level of sonic intensity, which influenced an entirely new genre of music for decades to come.
Since you are exploring music you haven’t heard l would love to hear your reaction to the music of Jethro Tull (1968-the present). Start with the studio version of Nothing Is Easy from the Stand Up album (1969). Then go through the catalog of the following albums- one every year up to 1980 No two albums are alike and that’s what is amazing about them. I will check out your channel to see your reactions !
Black Sabbath's signature guitar riffs from Tony Iommi are legendary. Early on he had an accident at work where his finger tips were severed. He created prosthetics for his fingers that took his guitar playing to a new level
What I would say to you is the same as I've said to other reactors listening to 1960's, 70's and 80's music - imagine back then, no internet and mostly getting your first taste of a group from the radio. Try thinking about what was happening in the world at the time of the song's release, and other music before the song was released. I can assure you this made an incredible impact on us kids here in the UK, as it was a single and so the national radio stations played it, which meant over 90% of young people heard it, rather than the smaller number who bought or listened to albums. It was just so loud and vastly different from Beatles, Sinatra or other stuff we heard on the radio.
Black Sabbath is credited with being the FIRST "heavy metal" band by a large number of people. They were one of the first bands to come out with that dark, fast and heavy sound that is associated with metal music. Iron Maiden created another branch of the heavy metal genre. Likewise, bands like Metallica, Anthrax, Slayer and Megadeath introduced the "speed metal" branch. (If you don't already know, Anthrax has done collaborations with Public Enemy and The Beastie Boys. They are definitely one of the bands you want to check out!)
Bill Ward always beat the drums like they owed him money! So energetic, great drummer. The lyrics you read were from a live performance lol. If you want to hear a great song by Ozzy I would suggest Mr. Crowley, has one of the greatest guitarists of all time playing lead guitar; Randy Rhoads.
"Fun fact" ... Tommi Iommi - the guitarist of BS - lost two fingers ends in a work accident and uses fake finger tips while playing! That's how he "inventend" iconic "powerchords"!
Even "better", he worked at a factory and the fingertips were crushed by a metal press, a very heavy metal, so to say.. This is like the ultimate lore story of how the Heavy Metal genre came to be (even though the name is just a coincidence of course).
Ozzfest baby right here! In my moms belly at the January 1996 ozzfest. Born 2 months later on St Patrick’s day. Absolutely love Ozzy. Still listen to his Tapes!
I have mental health issues. I like songs that I can relate to. I'm 55, and during the 80s I wasn't really into Black Sabbath or any of the "devil music," or so they called it. It wasn't until later on in life that I could really appreciate it. It's not actually satanic. But back then, the panic was real. I laugh at my old self. Life happens. I'm a disabled veteran with PTSD, depression and anxiety. My head sometimes interferes with my thinking. 80s were wild and had great music. Maybe this was 70s. I was too young to understand. I know I heard it back then. I just couldn't connect the dots.
Tony Iomi - Guitar Riff Master, Bill Ward - Beast of a Drummer, Geezer Butler- Bass Wizard and Socially Conscious Lyricist. And then there's OZZY. Every song on 1st 5 albums are just bad ass.
Awesome reaction. I've always loved Sabbath. 🤘Ozzy🤘. I've even left instructions for Ozzy's song "See you on the other side" to be played at my funeral.
The OG's of heavy metal. Ozzy's voice is iconic, haunting, and instantly recognizable anywhere. Another reactor made me realize something that really surprised me after listening to him for many years - he sings with no vibrato at all.
IMO the best ever Sabbath song is Children of the Grave. Read the Lyrics please. Spoiler alert, Children of the Grave is a song about supporting peace.
1970 , i was 3 years old at that time , but my start as a Metalhead was 10 years later and today with over 56 years ist that the same strong love to Heavy Metal Music
When they recorded this song they needed another 3 min "filler" song, so Tony came up with the riff, and they just had Ozzy freestyle for about 45 minutes and they took the best parts and made it into paranoid.
The freestyle recording of the song actually exists on an extended edition of the album which includes the raw demos for some other songs as well like Hand of Doom and iirc Walpurgis which is the original version of war pigs before they changed the lyrics to be about politics and war rather than black masses
Black Sabbath took its name from a film poster advertising the Boris Karloff film 'Black Sabbath'. At that time, the band was called Earth - and before that the name was Polka Tulk Blues Band.
black sabbath is the reason metal exists. Especially heavy metal, doom metal, stoner rock and i will argue that even thrash started with the black sabbath song "symptom of the universe"
Ozzy and Black Sabbath songs lyrics were commercialized and changed in the 90s I remember having original records and listening re-releases later. He did say "end your life, I wish I could congratulate"
Wrote this two minute masterpiece in about 10 minutes to fill out the PARANOID LP. It remains my favorite brief song (other brief songs like those of the Ramones or the LA punks who did dozens of sixty second songs. GREAT song. One of the best ever.
guitarist Tony Iommi had some fingertips chopped off on his last day at work at the factory before going full-time muso... he was inspired by Django Reinhardt who recovered from a wagon (caravan) fire that wrecked his left hand. Tony plays with fake fingertips, what a legend
It started off almost as a joke. They were playing about with a variation on Led Zeppelin's equally concise 'Communication Breakdown' and it was the producer that suggested they run with it. I think it very nearly topped the UK chart!
Black Sabbath released there debut album on friday the 13th february , 1970 They ARE THE FIRST heavy metal band and invented what we now call Metal They came first. everything else stems from what Sabbath created. as far as metal goes
Tony Iommi (guitar) was the best riff-meister of all time. He came up with the basic riffs for almost all Sabbath songs (Geezer Butler on bass came up with others). Ozzy was a great frontman and inspirational at producing vocals at will to fill the space, but Geezer wrote most of the lyrics. Geezer dreamed the main riff and lyrics for their song "Behind the Wall of Sleep" from their first album. This performance was before they got too heavy into drugs and booze. They were still poor kids from Aston (near Birmingham). They were so poor that Geezer couldn't believe it when he saw an indoor toilet for the first time. "You mean you take a crap inside your house?"
Enjoy your life, not end your life. There was a big controversy about this in the 70s when it came out. I was yelled at for playing it all the time, because I played it as much as possible 🙃
My mother would have flipped out if I bought any of their albums, so once I got a cassette deck, I borrowed the records from friends or the library and recorded them to tapes so I could hear it in my headphones. Their self titled debut album from 1970 is totally fire. They even used the start of "The Wizard" in Disney's Cruella movie.
some lore, Sabbath originally did this song in the studio, and only put it out because they needed another song on the album. then ended up being up of their biggest hits
Ozzie has a fantastic voice. The pace of the music is a reflection of your mind racing when you are paranoid or manic. People can get paranoid with bipolar disorder.
Just love your excursions into other genres, so many people stuck in their narrow musical lanes and there is so much great stuff out there from across the last 60-70 years and I think you are truly helping to open some eyes and smash some prejudice so major flowers to you. Hope it gives you some hints and influence to spice up your own work which is also banging
You are not the first person to hear "end your" instead of "enjoy" and he's been asked about it many times. You should definitely go check out some solo Ozzy... Bark at the Moon, Shot in the Dark, Suicide Solution, Rock n Roll Rebel, Crazy Train, The Ultimate Sin.... So many good ones to choose from.
Thank you BP you brought me back to my teens when Sabbath was my favorite band. I’ve seen them at least 10 times and it was always such an amazing show. Please my friend do War Pigs even if you do the MV the video for that song is animated and incredible. Much love from NYC

Saw Sabbath multiple times - saw Ozzy both with Randy and without - Sabbath is simply mind melting.

You will KNOW when Ozzy sings. His voice is the reason he cannot be mistaken. Thanks for this 🔥💗🔥💗
Early Sabbath should be taught in song writing classes. Their lyrics were awesome.
This album was the birth of Heavy Metal....pure and simple.
Sabbath's first album would be make more sense. Paranoid is the second album...
First legit metal band off all time!
War Pigs |Live in Paris 1970, greatest drumming display ever.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
This came out when the fucking Beatles were still the shit and #1! Unreal how before their time they really were!
And the album came out the very day Jimi Hendrix died.
Right after the 69 SUMMER OF LOVE... blew us away
I think he could still sing this perfectly… even if he couldn’t or can’t talk today. One of the best rock n roll vocalists of all time. He is classic.
When Black Sabbath finished recording their album they were just short a minute and a half and needed a filler. So they just started jamming a song they never played before to fill it up. That song was Paranoid.

some lore, Sabbath originally did this song in the studio, and only put it out because they needed another song on the album. then ended up being up of their biggest hits
Truth! Ozzy's voice us unmistakable and is like no one else's voice.
1970. The other must-watch video from that year is "Mississippi Queen" (live), by Mountain.
Two of the hardest songs of the period.
The instrumental for this song was used on the SNES game: Rock-'n'-roll Racing back in 93'
When this came out it was the bomb people played this at every party.
Ozzy...🔥 Black Sabbath is awesome
Great reaction ❤
😁This takes me way back. Paranoid was the first record I ever bought. I was about 12 at the time. Still one of my favorites. Thanks for the reaction.🙂
OMG Geto Boyz-Mind Playing Tricks on me. One of my favorites. Black Sabbath is awesome.
I seen him in the 90's at Ozzfest! He always makes sure to say God bless!
Recognize the song writing genius! 💯. I have seen Ozzy, with and without Black Sabbath, at least 4 concerts, he is a genius songwriter
