Ronnie James Dio did indeed popularize the horns in the metal scene ...Its origins are actually from Sicily/Italy. It's called "the Maloik" or "Malocchio" or "the evil eye" Dio was Italian, and throwing up the horns at a foe was a superstitious way to fend off the "evil eye", or negativity from an enemy in Italy. Dio used to throw the horns up on stage when he sang for Black Sabbath after Ozzy left in 79' and the rest is history. Now we throw up the \m/ to hail metal in all its glory!..... Basically a metalhead's stank face.
Growing up in the Bible Belt in the 80s with the “satanic panic” I was terrified listening to Ozzy and Dio would sacrifice my eternal soul. Grew up being told the “Devil’s horns” meant “Hail Satan” much like Christian performers give a nod to God. It was such an education in propaganda and how easy a scared population run with whatever. So glad you posted this. I remember laughing my ass off hearing the true origins in an interview with a very kind and normal Ronnie in his home.
As an Italian myself I totally agree with this explanation. Actually, in Italian folklore the gesture is accompanied with the exclamation "Tiè!" (more or less "keep it to yourself!" or "back to you!")
He also said he learned it from his Grandmother. She would do it to ward off evil spirits of people that they would encounter walking down the street. This can be found in one of his documentaries.
The legendary Ronnie James Dio, considered by many one of the greatest rock singer of all time. He made history of Hard Rock as singer of Rainbow, Black Sabbath and later with his personal project Dio. Sadly he passed away in 2010 because of a stomach cancer.
Great reaction guys lol and yes I'm gonna be 60 in a few months 😂 so I'm your fan base lol. Gotta check out the kick drum placement on that track again. Great stuff!
Yes, Dio started the trend with the sign of the horns at rock concerts. It was used by various cultures as a sign to ward off evil and his grandmother, a traditional Italian lady, used it frequently. So, he decided to use it in concerts and it took off from there. He did not invent the hand gesture, obviously, but he made it popular in the context of rock music.
"Dio said the lyrics are about a Christ figure on another planet who sacrifices himself to redeem his people. When the people learn that he intends to leave them to save people on other planets, they selfishly ask him to stay."
The last in line, don't talk to strangers, stargazer, neon knights, heaven and hell. I could literally go on forever. Ronnie James Dio had the greatest voice to ever grace this earth
great voice, but the greatest? Idk dude I think danzig & iron maiden singer and the lead singer from the cult. Their voices are pretty iconic. What about that dude from disturbed, or the lead singer from the darkness? there's plenty of good singers...I mean just look at greta van fleet right now or ambrose from the murlocs. All amazing voices
@GrowingDownUnder arguments can be made for a lot of singers. Especially in the rock and metal genre because we are incredibly lucky that it has been filled with so much talent through out the years. It's all subjective and of course down to personal opinion. Glenn Danzing and Ian Astbury wouldn't be in my top 1000 singers list but I can certainly understand why people would like them because they are unique and instantly recognisable. Dio will always my number 1 voice because for some reason it just hits me. Probably down to pure nostalgia because he was a big part of my youth but i feel it right in my bones haha 😂
A real legend! He replaced Ozzy in Black Sabbath for a time, was in Rainbow with Richie Blackmore, before going solo as simply DIO. A small guy with a huge voice. The horns came from his grandmother, protection from the "evil eye."
And, he goes back even further than that. Having started music as a bassist in 1957, and began doing vocals in 1960. Producing his first album with a band called the Prophets in 1960.
Ronny James Dio said that he started the horns up, he said he got it from his Italian Gypsy Grandmother, it's meant to reflect the evil eye curse. So basically it's a blessing. Dio was an American artist.
I remember an interview or documentary about Ronnie James Dio. He explained that Holy Diver is a messianic character in a science fiction story that he developed. Not sure he ever wrote down the complete story, but the themes of that story are often in the poetry of his lyrics.
I saw him on this tour. Actually saw him 4x. Once with Rainbow, twice as a soloist and once when he was in Black Sabbath. One of the greatest rock vocalists of all time. Hes definitely one of the GOATS
Dio saved my life when I was a kid. I was on the verge of a permanent solution to a temporary problem. I know it sounds cliche but the first song on that album kind of empowered me in the early 80's and I went on to whip the bullies asses, win national and world martial arts competitions, have a great career... those first bars from "Stand up and Shout" just... anyway. I'm a Dio fan boy and have been since the days he sang in Rainbow.
You should check out Stargazer by the band Rainbow, which is Dio on vocal and Ritche Blackmore on guitar (who was the lead guitar player in Deep Purple) Its amazing :D
One of the top rock voices ever! Started in a group called rainbow in the 70’s then was the singer for Black Sabbath after Ozzy left, this was from his solo album the last in line, which is also a great song!
Dio was one of the most iconic artist in the Metal Music genre. Whether solo, with Black Sabbath, or Rainbow his voice, music, and talent can't be overrated. This is a whole new rabbit hole for you to explore. Check out Rainbow in the Dark, Don't Talk to Strangers, Last in Line, Mob Rules (Black Sabbath), Light in the Black (Rainbow), and Stargazer (Rainbow). Also, listen to the studio or live version of Holy Diver. This version was shortened.
Yeah, Dio is a whole vibe. And it’s generally meant to be ambiguous “create your own story”. Back in the 80’s, we didn’t have the internet, you’d rush to the local record store to get the new one, then go to a friends house, get high af, & spend the day trying to decipher both the lyrics and the album covers 🤷♀️
Dio, born Ronald James Padavona, was born in New Hampshire and lived in New York and California. He might have lived in England for a time when he was in Black Sabbath, but I don't know for sure. This album, Holy Diver, was released in 1983, after Dio left Black Sabbath in 1982. Nightwish singer Floor Jansen is married to the drummer of Sabaton, a band from Sweden. RIP Dio! You must react to Rainbow - Stargazer, a superb song featuring Dio.
After Ozzy left Black Sabbath Dio took over on vocals. I've seen him solo and with Sabbath. He was a beast. And really little like Tom cruise so imagine those clear loud vocals coming out of someone so tiny
Dio was the lead vocalist for Black Sabbath after Ozzy got fired. You are correct. In many ways the heavy rock that turned into heavy metal originates not in Scandinavia but in the UK first and then a bit later the US. Though it was more Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath that are arguably the pioneers. Judas Priest and Motorhead came a little bit after Sabbath and Zeppelin and Deep Purple.
My first concert without adult supervision was when i was 15. Some friends & i went and saw Dio at the Lakeland Civic Center in Lakeland, FL in 1985 on his Sacred Heart Tour. It was phenomenal. And, yes Ronnie James Dio was the one who originated 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻 in the music industry. He once said in an interview that he took it from his old world Italian grandmother. She referred to it as giving the evil eye. She would give that look to someone & make the 🤘🏻 hand gesture with the fingers pointed at the person she'd be giving the look to. You know that look that you'd get from an old woman that didn't like you, what your doing, or what you've done. We'd call it the stink eye.
There is actually a video from an interview that Ronnie explains the meaning of the song. You should check it. The horns is something DIO "invented" , he said it was a sign from his grandma when he was a kid , that when she do that he was protected from evil spirits or something. DIO is literally metal incarnated. One of a kind.
Ronnie James Dio was known for popularizing the sign of the horns in heavy metal. He claimed his Italian grandmother used it to ward off the evil eye (which is known in Italy as malocchio). Dio began using the sign soon after joining the metal band Black Sabbath in 1979.
Back in the early 80's I got to see Dio in concert and went backstage to meet him. I was shocked how such a small man could deliver such a powerful performance. Seen Prince as well but not sure who was smaller. Lucky to have seen them both backstage.
You NEED to react to Stargazer! Probably one of the best songs ever created. And the lyrics have an awesome and pretty straight forward message. This song is a part of me since my early childhood. And btw Dio was one of the nicest human beings to walk this earth. I met him when I was like 12 and I was at a concert.
As one of your viewers who suggested Dio (pretty sure after you discovered Iron Maiden), I'm SO jazzed you decided to go with this one. So many good songs. From "Stargazer" and "Rainbow in the Dark" with Rainbow, "Heaven and Hell" and "Mob Rules" with Sabbath, to "Don't Talk to Strangers" and "The Last in Line" solo, Ronny James Dio defined metal. Congrats on making it to the top of the A category (largest following) in Disco Doc's RENaction World Cup! Good luck on the finals!
Fun fact: You've reacted to the "Nightwish - Last Ride of the Day" live performance from 2016, the stage they are performing on in Czech Republic is called "The Ronnie James Dio stage" as a tribute to this incredible legend of metal.
You'll have to hear Killswitch Engage cover this song but yeah this is an all-time classic! Ronnie James Dio was a rock star for sure. He just had that voice with the IT factor
Great reaction guys. I am an old classic rock girl. It's really interesting seeing things like this from a new perspective. Btw, I try to like, share and comment on all of your videos. But, you put out so much content It's hard to keep up sometimes. 😃
Saw him many times.. he sang with Black Sabbath after Ozzy left.. one of the best voices ever!!! RIP Dio 🎶♥️🎶 yes Dio had the horns.. think he got it from his Grandma!😂
Anthony Frank Iommi Jr...his last day cutting sheet metal, cut off the tips of his middle and ring finger of his left hand. Changed the way he tuned and played guitar. 1969 HEAVY METAL is born!
Ronnie James Dio (born Ronald James Padavona) was from upstate NY, specifically Cortland, NY. His father was a musician and Dio learned to play trumpet originally, although he could play multiple instruments. His rock music career started back in 1957 in a local band that eventually transformed into the rock band Elf. From there he eventually teamed up with British guitar legend Ritchie Blackmore to form Rainbow, a stint that lasted for a few years until Black Sabbath fired Ozzy Osbourne and asked Dio to replace Ozzy. Dio fronted Black Sabbath for a couple of years until he and the other band members had a falling out, leading to the formation of the band Dio.
Dungeons and Dragons / Apocalyptic themes with music and movies were huge in the 80's, but 80's videos have no correlation to the songs being played. MTV was new and a lot of up and coming directors were making all kinds of strange videos to show of their stuff. Ronnie James Dio is considered the Godfather of Metal and yes, he 'Popularized' The metal symbol \m/,
Ronnie James Dio ( 1942 - 2010 ) was the legendary vocalist of Dio (the band) which he formed in 1983... 'Holy Diver' was their debut album... He popularized the "devil's horns" gesture when he replaced Ozzy Osbourne in Black Sabbath from 1980 to 1982 and would do "🤘🤘" at concerts - he said he got it from his superstitious Catholic grandmother who would flash the sign to ward off the 'evil eye'. Born Ronald James Padavona in an Italian American family, he formed a disdain for religion after being raised in a strict Catholic upbringing... he decided to become a singer in the late 1950's after becoming a rock n' roll fan... He made a name for himself singing R&B/ do wop songs and changed his name to Ronnie James Dio ('Dio' being the Latin word for 'God') in the 1960's. Eventually, Ronnie Dio became a fan of heavy rock music (Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath) and had his own heavy rock band Elf in the early 1970's... In 1975, Deep Purple's guitarist Ritchie Blackmore offered him a job as the singer for his new band Rainbow... that became Ronnie Dio's first taste of major fame, but he was fired in 1979 after 3 albums (Rainbow went in a pop rock direction afterwards)... Soon after, Ronnie was asked to replace Ozzy Osbourne as the vocalist for Black Sabbath... His first Sabbath album 'Heaven and Hell' in 1980 became a platinum hit, but he left the band after a 2nd album 'Mob Rules' in 1981 and a live album 'Live Evil' in 1982. In 1983, Ronnie James Dio and former Sabbath drummer Vinny Appice recruited former Rainbow bassist Jimmy Bain... and then a young Irish guitarist Vivian Campbell... and that became the band Dio... They had a hit debut album 'Holy Diver'... followed by a platinum album 'The last in line' in 1984... However, after a 3rd album 'Sacred heart' in 1985, guitarist Vivian Campbell left after a financial dispute w/ Ronnie Dio. Unfortunately, Dio's popularity dropped after their 4th album 'Dream evil' in 1987... a 5th Dio album 'Lock up the wolves' in 1990 was recorded w/ a completely new line-up and failed commercially. A chance meeting led to Ronnie Dio reconnecting w/ Black Sabbath members and they decided to reunite in 1992 and recorded a 3rd Black Sabbath album ('Dehumanizer') w/ Ronnie Dio on vocals... but he quit in 1993 after refusing to open for Ozzy Osbourne. Ronnie Dio returned w/ a new Dio line-up in 1993, but their popularity in the 90's was decimated by the grunge rock scene... but Dio persisted in recording and touring... Dio saw his popularity rise again after 2000 as members came and went... In 2006, Ronnie James Dio was again approached about working w/ Black Sabbath members again... They decided to rename the band Heaven and Hell and recorded 1 studio album in 2009 ('The devil you know') and tour... Ronnie was also working on new songs for Dio. Sadly, Ronnie James Dio was diagnosed w/ colon cancer in '09... He underwent treatment, but passed away in 2010 at age 67 (R.I.P.) His widow / manager Wendy Dio just released a documentary film on the late singer - "Dio: Dreamers never die"
If you've never heard this song then you weren't a South Park fan. There's a hysterical scene in like one of the first 3 seasons where Dio plays the South Park school dance.
Dio rules ! 🤘 Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath and finally Dio. That were the bands where Dio let his mighty voice shine. I love it !!! Check out "Lock up the Wolves". Great song... Greetings from Germany
The song 'Holy Diver' is really about a Christ-figure, who on another place, not Earth, has done exactly the same as we've apparently experienced or were supposed to have experienced on Earth: dying for the sins of man so that man can start again and be cleansed and do it properly," he told Sam Dunn for the film Metal: A Headbanger's Journey. "So, the same thing happened on this other far-distant planet, and all the people on this planet are calling him the Holy Diver because he's about to go to another world to do what he did to the first: absolve them from their sins by having himself killed. And the people are saying to him, 'Don't go,' with innuendos of tigers and stripes and hearts and being eaten. It was meant to show just how selfish humanity is, that this one form of humanity on this one world said, 'No, don't go down there and save anybody else. Stay here, we need you, you are ours.'"
YES THEY ARE , came with this vid in like 83 we all adopted it in like 2 month . became part of look bellbottoms farrah faucet feathered heir a tour shirt and a wilsons leather coat .....standard dress for us all.
I grew up in the San Fernando Valley....North Hollywood specifically (the old NoHo). One day, ditching school, some of my friends and I ended up at Shakey's Pizza on Laurel Cyn for their "All you can eat" pizza buffet. We've all loaded up our plates and are scarfing down when one of my friends looks up and notices none other than Ronnie James Dio and what I now assume was his wife, eating a couple of tables away from us. We get done with our meal and talk among ourselves and gather up the courage to go say hi. We told him how much we loved him and his music and how incredible he was, One thing we had agreed on though, was not to ask him for an autograph. We talked with him for about 5 minutes and went on our way. From that point on, I would see him probably once a week (he and his wife's recording studio was on Laurel Cyn, down the street from Shakey's, but we didn't know that at the time). Every time he would see me/us, he would say hi and ask how we were doing. He was SO cool, such a personable dude, such a gentleman. We were probably 15-16 and he treated us like friends. It hurt a lot when we lost him. Long live Ronnie James Dio....a true King among men.
Dio was the first band I ever declared to be my favorite band. I was a 7th grader, back in mid 80's. Dio's Dream Evil was the first tape I ever bought with my own money. Still love them.
Ronnie James Dio is an absolute legend and an absolute great human being. First time I ever did mushrooms was at a Dio concert at McNichols Arena in Denver in the 80's. It was epic.
One of the best voices to ever grace Rock music, with a career spanning 6 decades (from 1957 until his death in 2010; even performing his last tour dying of cancer).
Ronnie James Dio was the lead singer for Black Sabbath after Ozzy left. He was a short man (5'4") but had a voice as big as a mountain. He was great in concert. I saw his Holy Diver concert in Mad City, Jan. 25, 1985.
There will never be another like Ronnie James Dio!! His vocals will never be matched. He is the best metal vocalist that ever walked this planet. You definitely need to check out more Dio, especially when he was with Black Sabbath. He is/was the best thing that ever happened to Sabbath IMO. He was the kindest most compassionate man when it came to his fans. Pure legend. He is greatly missed. R.I.P. Ronnie
RJD has been my favorite singer since the very first time I heard hos voice in 1985, seen him multiple times in concert and I have never once thought this song had anything to do with sex at all lol. Once you start down the Dio rabbit hole you'll be there for years, the man was a true legend.
Dio's grandmother I believe use to give him the sign to let him know she was watching him & anything bad he was doing she could see it. She was warning him, she's always watching, so he brought it out into the early days of Rock/Metal. Dio is one of the fathers of old school Metal. Dio's lyrics focus on the unseen, magical, spiritual, good vs evil, right & wrong & the search for truth of life. Dio was in Black Sabbath when Ozzy left, he is one of the Kings of Frontmen singers for Rock/Metal, very well thought of.
Killswitch Engaged covered this song. I know you did a killswitch song a few months ago End of Heartache. Definitely check the cover of Holy Diver they did
If you google EPIC metal songs, you'll find this song on the list. Other songs: Stargazer by Rainbow Heaven and Hell by Black Sabbath Coincidentally, Dio was the vocalist for all of them. Check 'em out brother!
Not they, He. The band is named after the singer, Ronnie James Dio. And he introduced the 'maloik' (hand gesture) he learned from his gypsy grandmother as a hand gesture to block or give the evil eye. He thought it was cool and used it onstage. It became know as the devil horns (amongst other names) and became the ubiquitous symbol / gesture for metal music and heads.
If you like this by Dio - check out "Last In Line". This one is a banger - Last in Line is super banger!! Ronnie Dio replaced Ozzy as lead vocals of Black Sabbath.
The horn sign is an old hand gesture used to vanquish evil spirits. Word is Dio was the first in rock to use it and he use to see his grandmother doing it to clear their house of evil.
Originators of metal in my opinion: First real full on metal band but the genre didnt excist yet: - Black Sabbath (Ozzys band) "People, even the band, still called it blues rock, jazz rock, hard rock. Metal wasnt a thing yet but they were the first with the metal sound. Ozzy's nickname is the Prince of Darkness. Homage to his influence on the metal genre and his style.' First band to embrace the metal genre and gave it its leather and spikes image: - Judas Priest "Started as blues rock around 1970 and mid seventies went more metal. 1980 Their British Steel album was full on metal but still radio friendly. During 80s grew into a real full on metal power house. Their nickname is the Metal Gods. Expecially their Singer Rob Halford. His nickname is the Metal God" Then end 70's the Metal Genre excisted and alot of sub genres emerge. But thats a loooong story for a different time.
Dio said the lyrics are about a Christ figure on another planet who sacrifices himself to redeem his people. When the people learn that he intends to leave them to save people on other planets, they selfishly ask him to stay.
The album cover was a Catholic priest wrapped in chains. In the water going under. Ronnie got that from his granny she was a gypsy that's supposed to ward of the evil eye.
Im sure everyone in the comment praised Dio and this song enough so im gonna praise it indirectly. This song is great for metal / rock neophytes and also for reactions because Killswitch Engage did a fantastic cover of it. The opportunity here is to see the difference between old school metal and (since i dont want to say new school metal cause it got a bed rep) current metal. Although you guys been reacting to older metal and newer metal, i dont think you ever listened to the same song in both styles. Maybe you'll discover something, who knows.
Ronnie James Dio is from upstate New York. He formed this band after leaving Black Sabbath, where he replaced Ozzy. Check out Heaven and Hell and Mob Rules from Back Sabbath to see his work with them.
Lol, 😂 that's how you interpret ''Holy Diver', Dio was big into philosophy, literature, history etc and he had a way with lyrics that would require many many listens to start to unravel the intended message or messages. Holy Diver = Muff Diver lol 😂😂😂
Ronnie James Dio did indeed popularize the horns in the metal scene ...Its origins are actually from Sicily/Italy. Ozzy didn't just leave in 79 he was fired for being too wild.

Coven did the horns in the 60's, Dio helped popularize it but he certainly didn't introduce it.

Not one of the best. The best
That sucked met him 2003 orbit room Grand Rapids small club loved no see the priest
@@bobbycollins6783 I think Ian Gillan is on the same level.
Great reaction guys lol and yes I'm gonna be 60 in a few months 😂 so I'm your fan base lol. Gotta check out the kick drum placement on that track again. Great stuff!
YES. He did. But, he said his grandmother would do this as a means to say, I love you, if I remember correctly. It was never intended as "devil horns"

A small man with one of the strongest, most powerful voice in metal history.
Rest in Peace, Dio! ❤
"Dio said the lyrics are about a Christ figure on another planet who sacrifices himself to redeem his people. When the people learn that he intends to leave them to save people on other planets, they selfishly ask him to stay."
I saw that as well.
"I want to come out, not out ta closet...but come out to a fight or something" had me f****** rolling 😂
The last in line, don't talk to strangers, stargazer, neon knights, heaven and hell. I could literally go on forever. Ronnie James Dio had the greatest voice to ever grace this earth

Dio has one of the best voices ever! He's incredible.
You gotta check out Dio's Rainbow in the Dark. It's always been my favorite.
Yes!!!!
A rainbow in the dark. It really doesn’t get any more metal than a rainbow in the dark
I remember an interview or documentary about Ronnie James Dio. He explained that Holy Diver is a messianic character in a science fiction story that he developed. Not sure he ever wrote down the complete story, but the themes of that story are often in the poetry of his lyrics.
5:25 BP killed the airdrums. LOVE This song and the diversity on this channel. KEEP COOKING
I saw him on this tour. Actually saw him 4x. Once with Rainbow, twice as a soloist and once when he was in Black Sabbath. One of the greatest rock vocalists of all time. Hes definitely one of the GOATS
Wow! Don, you guessed right! Holy Diver did come out in 1983.
A lot of metal artists from his era were writing fantasy novels. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.
Dio was my favorite singer ever! I had to pull over and bawl when I heard he had died. 💜🙏🏼
I was at home and crushed. Only celebrity death I ever cried over.
Next reaction should be Dio "Last In Line". Dio also used to sing in Black Sabbath, here you should check out "Heaven and Hell"!
Yes!!
ronnie james dio was classically trained trumpet player that's where he got breathing techniques RIP RJD one very best ever your missed
Dio said at a show that the horns mean Rock n Roll. RIP Dio. Best Metal Singer Ever.
The last in line
Dio was in Black Sabbath and a band called Rainbow. He also went by the name Ronnie James Dio when he did his solo stuff
Dio was also in a band called Elf from 67' - 75'.
The Last in Line and Rainbow in the Dark....classic Dio! Dio was my first concert back in 1984 when I was 14 yrs old.
Love both of those songs also!
That’s awesome
You should check out Stargazer by the band Rainbow, which is Dio on vocal and Ritche Blackmore on guitar (who was the lead guitar player in Deep Purple) Its amazing :D

Most powerful voice ever in rock. And it came from such a small guy. I got to see him with Rainbow and with Sabbath back in the days.
Dio is truly a Legend. The videos are so dated from the 1980s but the music is timeless.
Yeah, Dio is a whole vibe. And it’s generally meant to be ambiguous “create your own story”.
Correct !
Ronnie James Dio was known for popularizing the sign of the horns in heavy metal. He claimed his Italian grandmother used it to ward off the evil eye (which is known in Italy as malocchio). Dio began using the sign soon after joining the metal band Black Sabbath in 1979.
Coven did the horns in the 60's, Dio neither invented nor introduced them to rock/metal, he did help popularize them.
So happy you're vibin to Dio!!! The voice is fire the lyrical content is amazing and the video is lit too. Thanks bud. Y'all made my day!
From the Band ELF , RAINBOW , BLACK SABBATH to Solo Stuff that was Ronny James Dio = R.I.P !
Back in the early 80's I got to see Dio in concert and went backstage to meet him. I was shocked how such a small man could deliver such a powerful performance. Seen Prince as well but not sure who was smaller. Lucky to have seen them both backstage.
My first concert back in like 82 or something 😀
That cover sucks
Great reaction guys.
I am an old classic rock girl.
It's really interesting seeing things like this from a new perspective.
Btw, I try to like, share and comment on all of your videos.
But, you put out so much content It's hard to keep up sometimes. 😃
Saw him many times.. he sang with Black Sabbath after Ozzy left.. one of the best voices ever!!! RIP Dio 🎶♥️🎶 yes Dio had the horns.. think he got it from his Grandma!😂
Yes! One of the best male vocals! Must have been so cool to be with him live a bunch of times. I did see him with Sabbath back in the day.
Anthony Frank Iommi Jr...his last day cutting sheet metal, cut off the tips of his middle and ring finger of his left hand. Changed the way he tuned and played guitar. 1969 HEAVY METAL is born!
HOLY DIVER !!! YOU'VE BEEN DOWN TOO LONG IN THE MIDNIGHT SEAAAAAA !!!!
He underwent treatment, but passed away in 2010 at age 67 (R.I.P.)
His widow / manager Wendy Dio just released a documentary film on the late singer - "Dio: Dreamers never die"
If someone said Floor was married to someone, he was talking about Hannes Dahl, drummer of Sabaton... another amazing band to check out
If you've never heard this song then you weren't a South Park fan. There's a hysterical scene in like one of the first 3 seasons where Dio plays the South Park school dance.
You will love Rainbow in the Dark also Last in Line. He also was the singer for Black Sabbath for a bit. Great songs during that time
Dio grew up in Cortland, NY about 30 miles south of Syracuse. Absolute legend.
Dio rules ! 🤘
Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath and finally Dio.
Definitely gotta check out Killswitch Engages cover of this. But this is such a classic!! Glad you’re enjoying this!!
Dio! One of the most powerful rock singers of all time. Saw him with Sabbath back in the day.
One of the best voices to ever grace Rock music, with a career spanning 6 decades (from 1957 until his death in 2010; even performing his last tour dying of cancer).
Rock And Roll Children was the first Ronnie James Dio song I heard by him. Still one of my faves
"I only know in my world, I hate the light-I speed at night!"
Ronnie James Dio is from Cortland, NY. Just north of Ithaca, NY in upstate NY. He was the lead singer of Black Sabbath after Ozzy Osbourne.
Killswitch Engaged covered this song. I know you did a killswitch song a few months ago End of Heartache. Definitely check the cover of Holy Diver they did
If you google EPIC metal songs, you'll find this song on the list. Other songs:
Stargazer by Rainbow
Heaven and Hell by Black Sabbath
Coincidentally, Dio was the vocalist for all of them. Check 'em out brother!
Dio is one of the absolute LEGENDS of rock!
Hi from Paris 🇫🇷 !
Ronnie James Dio also sang the very popular “Love is all” from which we all know the clip with the frog 🐸 😊
Can't believe this you first time listing to this! DIO is a legand!!!
"Dio" means "God" in italian and yes Ronnie James Dio made the "evil eyes hand gesture" popular, also called horns.
Dio is such a vibe. Used to bump this on my playlist when i was a teen before any sporting event i was in
Awesome reaction, great to see you keep branching out:) yeah, you two have some learnin' to do ;) ❤🤘❤️🤘
My favorite song with Dio singing is "Man on the Silver Mountain" by Rainbow
Liliac , a band made of siblings, did a cover of this song. It's amazing to hear a voice just as powerful as DIO's voice coming from a teenage girl.
Dude putting on the headphones was EPIC! DIO RULES! His stuff gets even better. Check out the band Rainbow the song stargazer .
Can you believe dio went from Do-Woop in the 50s to Metal
Ronnie Dio and The Prophets
Ronald James Padavona
July 10, 1942
Portsmouth, New Hampshire, U.S.
Konen as Robbie James DIO . 🤘🏻
Hello from Cody Wyoming😊 you are both awesome...all are welcome to the rabbithole of DIO
Originators of metal in my opinion:
First real full on metal band but the genre didnt excist yet:
- Black Sabbath (Ozzys band)
"People, even the band, still called it blues rock, jazz rock, hard rock. Metal wasnt a thing yet but they were the first with the metal sound. Ozzy's nickname is the Prince of Darkness. Homage to his influence on the metal genre and his style.'
First band to embrace the metal genre and gave it its leather and spikes image:
- Judas Priest
"Started as blues rock around 1970 and mid seventies went more metal. 1980 Their British Steel album was full on metal but still radio friendly. During 80s grew into a real full on metal power house. Their nickname is the Metal Gods. Expecially their Singer Rob Halford. His nickname is the Metal God"
Then end 70's the Metal Genre excisted and alot of sub genres emerge. But thats a loooong story for a different time.
OH my Gosh --- one if my favorite - cult - and a must in any rock /metal collection --- great reaction ---
Ronnie James Dio was Ozzy's replacement in Black Sabbath in 1979, and did three albums with them.
This song has a special meaning for me and yeah it is great heavy metal song with an extrodinary singer DIO.
Dio is the greatest metal singer of of all times.
He created the metal horns too.
RIP ronnie 😢
The singer in Nightwish is in fact married to the drummer in Sabaton. In case you're still wondering 🙂
DIO replaced OZZY in Black Sabbath in 1980 - Heaven & Hell album is EPIC
OMG. This is one of my favourite songs from my teens. Couldn’t believe it when I saw you were reacting to this 🤘🤘😁
Ronnie James Dio is from upstate New York.
Dio went solo after being in a band called Rainbow and he's the most awesome early heavy metal artist
