How to move a 135 Ton crane in London

  • Back in 2018 I was lucky enough to be involved in a project in London that we had to transport a large Kobelco crawler crane a short distance on a SPMT supplied by ALE. A typically tight job in London that required much planning and specialist equipment including specialist man power. #youtuber #creator #cranes

    Those SPMT's are a wonderful invention. You build configurations like LEGO to fit any size of load.
    And when you connect several SPMT's to each other, you can synchronize them so the steering works across all the SPMT's using one remote control.

      Was a good project, I’m glad the other operator bottled it and I was called in to do it 😂

    That’s why it’s so expensive to build in London, great vid cheers

    The weight of the crane is not135ton. Just to remind us. Its the lifting capacity.

    Blimey! Pretty serious stuff! The loads on some of those supports must be off the scale.

      Was a pretty impressive bit of engineering just to get a crane and piling rig on to a job, the public don’t see this sort of thing as it normally happens at weekends or over night.

    Who nicked the keys then? 😅 This is actually my first time viewing the mob, amazing stuff!! Thought you'd need a thicker harness on you though 😜

    Interesting to watch that. I've had a good look at that site over the several years it's been there and it seems pretty clear that every single stage will have been complicated by the limited access. Those SPMTs fascinate me - sounds as if there's a diesel engine on it somewhere, but how are the wheels powered - electric motors? And the steering - can each axle be separately controlled? I'm just Joe Public (was once an engineer but even then I was in electronics so cranes were not exactly my daily cuppa) but have always been interested in how stuff works.

      Hi Richard, yes that job due to its location has its unique challenges, the SPMTs have a large Diesel engine on the front that powers hydraulics, not all the wheels are powered but can be moved and lifted independently. Have you seen my latest video uploaded on Sunday??

      The SPMT's have a detachable motor that is hooked on one end, and supplies hydraulic power to wheel motors, steering and height adjustment. The motor unit can power several SPMT's if they are connected together.

    So please do tell. What the deal with the stands? Are they just for loading unloading from the transporter? Did they perform the lifts on those stands? Pretty awesome set up. Are you a IUOE member?

      So the short version is the site has no access for heavy loads like the crane and the piling rig that went in the day after, the site is actually a lot higher than the road level and the only way to do it was to jack the crane up on them stands then drive it to the temporary ramp at the edge of the site then drive the crane across the temporary bridge and onto the site. It came out a year later the same way.

      Tristam Mayes no worries i just thought you might be the letter I in International Union of Operating Engineers lol you guys use the term “driver” for the guy operating the crane? I have heard that and took offenses first lol. We like to call each other “operators”. That way we sound cooler then a normal truck driver lol. Thanks for posting videos. I enjoy watching them

    • @TristamMayes
      @TristamMayes  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ryanburbridge we are the same here calling somebody a driver is a insult lol I’m a operator not a driver but to be fair some times when talking to the public I do slip up and call it crane driving lol
