  • So Mike and I spent a day riding the beautiful Welsh Roads on a day out with Metzeler and Pirelli, testing lots of tyres out their range.
    We were hit with all weather conditions which was great for us to really put the tyres through their paces!
    We did this exercise at the BMW Offroad Skills School. For more information on the BMW ORS - click here:

    HI Kate, some great rides on these beautiful and scenic roads, under some adverse weather conditions, and your Go Pro performed beautifully, with just the occasional blurring. I thought your comments on the tyre performances was very interesting and informative with such a variety to consider, and no extensive testing.💗💑💗

    A great variety of selection Kate,don't think I could get used to such narrows roads at the speed of knowing traffic is two-way...not what we Canadians ride on the west coast.Headeaneau K60's were my go to for 70,000km on my last GSA but have switched to Continental TKC70/TKC70 ROCKS on my 2021 Rallye GSA...a dedicated 40/60 tire with awesome rain handling characteristics.Back roads as in fire service roads in the mountains are my idea of what a GSA is all about...but that's just me.

    I have had a few pairs of Karoo Streets on my old 1200GS, and I think they were really good but fell short in the wet indeed. I found them to be the opposite of confidence inspiring when it’s raining heavily.
    I found them to be very good in the dry and better than expected in off-road conditions.
    I don’t have personal experience with any other tyre you tested in this video.

      Hello Kate. At the moment I am using the stock Anakee Adventure tyres that came with my new R1250GSA.
      So far these are the best tyres I have had (as a complete package: very good in the dry, good enough in the wet and good enough for me off-road), but I'm also someone who's happy to try something new and I've heard good things about the Dunlop Trailmax Mission so I'd like to try those next ;-)
      At the current pace, the Anakees have about 1.5 - 2 months left before they'll need to be replaced.

    I'm a value tyre user: I like to use them for good mileage and use them in all conditions, then get whatever good quality tyres are going for good value. I've had Pirelli Angel GT 2 before and loved them - got them in a deal where the front was free. Now I'm on Metzeler Z8 which are really good, just not the latest release so cheaper than 2021's fad tyres. They've done 5k miles so farand have been 👍👍👍, still going strong.
    Probably get S22s when they launch S23s 🤣

    Thank you for posting. My 2017 GS has Michelins at the moment. Although I am getting decent wear out of them the tire (tyre) noise level is very high. Of your top two or three tires, which do you think was the quietest (your riding style seems very similar to mine, i.e. very to no dirt riding)? Also, while you were riding the 66 bike, the warning light was on. Do you know what was wrong with the bike?

    I appreciate your effort to make a video, but we all need more technical information and less weather forecasts or landscaping, that we can observe in the video, but we want to hear: what you feel while riding, the tires are not object to be seen, we have to hear sensation you feel. How they handle in dry/wet conditions are they fast or slow while changing direction, how they react on inputs, how does they feel in fast slow corners, are they mushy, the feedback from pavement, acceleration, braking…
    That’s the whole point watching this kind of videos, for the rest we can watch NGC or WC :)
    Cheers 🍻

    I neither saw ABS or ASC/DTC disabled nor heard you mention doing so. If that's the case, I'd be concerned how much that would hide smaller handling characteristics of the tires. None of you appeared to be pushing the tires anywhere near their limits, either, as I'd expect that's where most of the differences would be exposed. Fresh tires on newer bikes with advanced ABS/ASC/DTC systems ridden at posted speed limits on tarmac are all going to be good enough for nearly anyone, rain or shine, IMO.
    I typically have put Metzler Roadtecs on my BMWs (R80, R11RS, K11RS), with a mindset of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". :)

    • @UsernameKate
      @UsernameKate  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I get that Craig, but realistically, how many people disable all that stuff when on the road? As I mention, I'm just speaking as a normal rider. Also, when youtubing, you can't really share tyres being 'pushed' that's how you get unwanted attention.. 😉

    • @Pyrrho_
      @Pyrrho_ 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@UsernameKate None, but my point was disabling all that stuff would more readily expose tire handling differences and I thought that was the purpose of the ride (& video). Perhaps another way of looking at this would be to think of how many people have really expensive modern bikes with all the riding assistance doo-dads vs how many more have older or less expensive bikes without? As for pushing -- fast accelerations from stop or slow speed, emergency braking, deliberate courses over different surfaces like steel grating or tar strips, etc can all be used to test grip and tracking characteristics safely and legally.
      I like your content otherwise. Bike & tire handling reviewing is just a peeve of mine I guess, as most reviews I see don't really offer much in terms of depth or detail. Modern bikes & tires are all so good nowadays that I feel far more value is provided in discrimination.

      @@Pyrrho_ wow who took the jam out of your donut… 🤭 she said in the video that she’s not a professional rider or tester that it was just her opinion, so why the fudge would she turn off TC etc 🤷🏽 I’ve been riding on the roads for 32yrs and I wouldn’t turn them all off… if you’ve got something that makes it safer why turn it off… call me a fanny but after a life changing off on an industrial diesel spill 17yrs I love rider aids!!! @chrishart8548 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Pyrrho_ I think the way ride was a planned event and the bikes were all borrowed this test was carried out under their controlled conditions at least every tyre got the same chance. There are plenty of other channels on TH-cam for each tyre pushing them much harder. If the aids were turned off and Kate crashed I'm not sure what the outcome would have been. those things on the GS are life savers. I'm so careful now on old bikes that don't even have ABS the tyres don't get pushed at all.

    • @Pyrrho_
      @Pyrrho_ 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@chrishart8548 It wasn't clear if they re-rode identical routes after each bike change or not, and even if so, the highly variable weather conditions would mean each tire couldn't get the same chance. Maybe by design (see my last point below).
      I've ridden RRSes and KRSes year-round in upper-midwestern US in rain, snow, ice, wind, etc with and although always with ABS, without the other aids and I've never come close to crashing due to loss of control. I'm not saying this to brag but as a demonstration that rider aids aren't required for safe riding even in excessive conditions. They're a useful tool and a safety buffer but ultimately a crutch. It always, always depends more on the rider's skill & experience.
      I understand why modern bikes have these aids as they want to make riding more approachable and safe for casuals who only ride on weekends in good weather. Aids can be life savers if the rider puts themselves in situations outside of their abilities, but anyone riding on two wheels puts their safety at increased risk every time they roll the throttle. However, I expect people that review bikes and gear to be more like me. Maybe that's unreasonable and I'm really that much of an outlier. 🤷‍♂️
      If the testers are scared of doing anything that pushes them out of a gadget-coddled comfort zone either out of fear of hurting themselves or loaned equipment, it's not really a useful test IMO. I'd say trying different tires on far cheaper and lighter bikes, each time running identical routes under the same weather conditions, without riding aids or ABS would be preferable and ultimately produce far more valuable reviews for viewers. Otherwise it just seems like a way for manufacturers to market their products via tailored environments that don't allow for meaningful critical differentiation.

    If i have round-about 5000miles/km to change both tires i look at first at the sale/price offer because some dealers clear the storage
    And in Climate Change we have temperature which switched from day to day ,also in rush hours sometimes with oil(diesel) on roads/streets 🤔

      @@UsernameKate only kidding love your channel. Also love all the defending of you too, it’s not you as I have a GS1250 and love it it’s a great bike. When I was originally looking it was never really explained to me “it’s a lower chassis” or ‘lower frame” which is true it is, but never how. I like the longer suspension travel especially off road or on our crappy roads. No one ever said it’s the suspension travel, almost like actually nothing that special or magical . I get it and it’s brought more people to the bike who would never have ridden one. In the end I went for the regular version and managed to get the seat height down to where I can virtually flat foot even though I have a 30” leg. 😁
