I love this show so fucking much. Encapsulating the near perfection of the 90s animation art style. Togashi makes antagonists that you can love just as much as the protagonists.
Beautiful romance & depiction of the judgement we all make on ourselves. Toguro's ego and attachment blinded him from having compassion for himself. He could not approach forgiveness after his reality, perception, and world were warped by the massacre of his friends. He simply couldn't move on after witnessing the price of weakness. Forever repeating the ironic behavior that broke his whole worldview in the first place.

There is something sad about anti-heroes like Toguro.
They remind me of our own past possible errors in life. Like some old versions of ourselfves are warning us about future similar errors. Like "I(Toguro in this example) have been here and I had shitty attitude but take my wrong behaviour as an example and try to be better than me." These arhietypes are like parallel teachers to us.
In his path to the "astral prison" he is trying to warn the protagonist to be aware of the possible deviation towards the dark side of the path. Which I found gratious and a moment of engligthement and that's one of the reasons to believe that Togruo has atoned some of his sins but still he is romanised by me. I am aware that he had killed a lot of people and his karma is heavy and probably he is going to repent an eternity there.
Still he can be used as a "dark" example for us "humans" how to walk a better life path.
In general bad guys as Toguro are more realistic version of the hero stereotype to me.
The second thing is that we know that Toguro had a rough past so he was a good hearted guy at the begining.
With some other anti-heroes I wouldn't be so inclined in the anti-hero stereotype where the anti hero is just
some crazy guy without really traumatic "justified" past.

@@kevinreynold5590 I initially preferred Sensui during the first half of Chapter Black Arc, however, after the introduction of the whole split personalities angle and the whole thing being revealed to be one convoluted suicide attempt, i eventually grew to favor Toguro's more ( relatively) grounded characterization.

LOL! English/American version is Toguro expressing his love for Genkai. Japanese dub (The real true version) shows Toguro blaming himself and in a way blaming Genkai for not joining him. This is the drama that we missed and it makes perfect sense. They should really redo the English/American Yu Yu Hakusho. Same old graphics and all scenes except replace the script to the original. Age 20+ script where it's not good for children or teens to see. Because seeing this original for the very first time blew my mind and it's like 100 times better than what I originally in saw and heard in the English/American version.

    • @lupinvash3

I really wish the dub was redone. I wasn't thrilled at all with the old dubs in the earlier days of Funimation. Especially with Lupin III and DBZ and YYH. Choice of dialogue and voices and mispronouncing some Japanese names for the characters is what made me dissatisfied with them.

Having seen the dub scene literally hundreds of times, it's crazy to compare the results of the localization vs. the translation. There's some clunky lines in the dub (mostly the boat flashback until the powerhouse "I can't help but think..") and Linda Young lacks some of the youthfulness in her voice to sell young Genkai (still love her performance), but here the two seem more distant than former lovers spurned by fate and obstinateness. Maybe that's more realistic after 50 years + a fight to the death and I just prefer the more forlorn lovers angle. One day I'll switch my dub rerun for a sub viewing. Thanks for the upload.

    • @grovermonster883
      @grovermonster883 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

It should be noted that they were not lovers in the original Japanese. Genkai was in love with Toguro, but he did not return her feelings. Toguro was always too focused on the martial arts to recognize anything else.

@@robertosoto6881Respectfully, I disagree. I know there's nostalgia at play here, but the translation seems much more "matter of fact" than the localization. "He lied to himself, saying he was after strength." does not hit me like "But I suspect underneath it all, he was just an ordinary man, with a wounded heart and a broken dream." Thanks for sharing though, and I'm glad you're enjoying a new viewing :)

Well he has 2 forms. Baby and teenager. Sub is good but it didn’t catch the characters much. Look at Yusuke sub va . Yusuke was supposed to be a punk kid with bad attitude. Sub didn’t catch that at all. Reason why togashi liked dub more than sub cause dub Yusuke va portray Yusuke vary well with the attitude and being a punk kid.

Mistake in the subtitles at 6:17. Genkai asks Toguro if it's enough already, and he replies "that's wrong", but subs say "No, it isn't." Basically he's denying her version of events and insisting otherwise, but the subbing error is misleading unfortunately.
