Even though I went to Purdue, and shown over 100 times in galleries, museums, juried festivals and fairs I got invited to exhibit at an "Outsider Art" show. Who decides who's an "insider"?
My theory is that the plagues influenced the art. Misfortune besought the wealthy to invest in symbolism of a nurturing elite...Church and secular... to inspire a feeling of dependence with the benefaction and keep dissent down as far as possible.
