"Like the D stock, and they were very unreliable."
Mate, the D stock were statistically the most reliable stock on LU.

not in their early days - passengers complained that there were no opening windows during hot weather, so the D stock were like greenhouses

That has absolutely nothing to do with reliability, that was a flaw in the decision to have sealed windows. Every driver of the D Stock complimented the D Stock for being reliable and low maintenance. @@mannydekhar-antipov9954

@@mannydekhar-antipov9954Yes, they modified them with windows a couple of years after introduction.

They were introduced in a blaze of publicity on the original Jubilee Line around 1984, but barely lasted 15 years; plans for some of them to be converted to run on the Piccadilly Line came to nothing, althougb some were stabled in various states of disrepair in sidings around the system, including some near South Harrow/Sudbury Town. Today, a few carriages survice as art studios on a former bridge near Shoreditch High Street Overground Station, and can be seen from passing trains.

The 1983 Stock may be long gone, apart from a few cars used as static art studios near Shoreditch High Street Overground (visible from the trains), but the 1972 Stock they replaced on the Jubilee Line is still going on the Bakerloo!!

As a regular London visitor I remember these trains on the Jubilee line, the break release was the most characteristic sound of this stock.

It was the last train London Transport ordered not TfL, TfL didn't exsist until the 2000s long after these were withdrawn. 3 3 car units lasted at South Harrow sidings til about 5 years ago before being sent for scrap which meant that they were dumped there nearly twice as long that they were in service.

Why would they scrap fresh tube trains aged a year old? So sad and wasteful. It would be like the Elizabeth line trains being scrapped today.

0:37, that is not technically correct, because if they could not be used, why did they even operate in the first place. That caption should probably read 'They could not be used on the Jubilee line long term'

Sounds like the train would have sound and rattle like the D stock as it has so many features that the D stock also uses, and as the D stock is a sub surface train, those features wouldn't work on a deep level one. No wander why they had so much faults and unreliabilities.

It was a big mistake to use the single leaf doors on the ex Jubilee line 1983 stock, it was constantly bugged with problems and technical faults.
It prematurely endeded their passenger service life.
Only the ex District line D78 stock could get away with single leaf doors and last so long in passenger service.
Brainless idiots at LT at the time, what were they thinking to copy the D78 design to the 1983 stock?

I used to love travelling on the 1983 TS, I especially loved them when their unpainted aluminium bodies were still silver, due to the process of oxidation of aluminium their bodies changed colour to white, exactly what happened to the D Stock, along with others.

These were wasted really.. probably could've worked on the Bakerloo line as it isn't as busy as the Jubilee line

    • @MannyAntipov

The 1983 tube stock couldn't work on the Bakerloo line because they were too long for the tight curves. Hell, even most tube trains today are too long for the Bakerloo, only the 1972 tube stock were sufficient for the job.
