...the funny thing is as they talk about Broc's being unusual....Malherbe, Thorpe, Bailey, Johnson, Leichen, Carlqvist, Vromans and Glover were all over six foot tall. I think Noyce was also tall.....and later Kurt Nicol, Heinz Kinegardner....he was massive.

They were probably thinking about guys like Heikki Mikkola, Jeff Ward, Bob Hannah, Mark Barnett, Danny LaPorte, Chuck Sun, and Danny Chandler. Mike "Too Tall" Bell seemed to think that being so tall was actually harder on his knees than if he'd been a shorter man. I always liked the fact that motocross was an "equalizer" sport, in that it didn't really matter what size a guy was. But you're right; all those great names you mentioned were pretty tall; and I'm sure they would've been excellent athletes in whichever sport they chose.

With Kent Howerton in the mix as a bonus...
    How cool is that...

Broc looked so good on that Yamaha with all white JT gear. He was always such a stylish guy, both in his choice of gear and his riding style itself. By all rights, traditionally the winner of the second moto gets the overall win, except in this single event…. As much as I do love Hakan, Broc was the man on this day👍. Glover is highly under rated and I’m not sure why that is?

    I was there.
My buddies and I went with a cooler of ice cold beer and no tickets.
We were a ragtag bunch of young desert rats and we tried to bribe our way in with beer.
The guy at the gate was laughing at us for coming out without tickets.
I said we spend all our money on premix, sparkplugs and knobbies but we just had to be here.
    Right answer!
    He let us all in.
    Thanks bro wherever you are!

I'll never understood why Yamaha never went water cooled with they're open class bikes. That's a good question that I've never had answered.

I have a shirt from this event that features cartoon art front and back. Can anyone tell me who was artist? I had a cup with same guys artwork and we all bought prints when Cycle News was an actual newspaper.

Broc's front end seems so sketchy

Brad Lackey might have won more than just one championship if he didn't let his ego get so big and asking for a million dollars for his 1983 contract.

Broc is on a YZM500 (works bike, it even had the YPVS) so of course it's not a 490.
