For years Dunkleosteus has been depicted as the top predator of the Devonian seas. And although this is still technically true, there has been a change to what we believed this placederm probably looked like. What we originally thought was a 9 meter monster is probably more than likely half that size...
So I sent TimTim back to the Devonian to correct me while recording the History of the Earth: Devonian...
Special thanks to yoofilos for providing me with many of the awesome artwork of the variant Dunkleosteus! If you want to check out his Instagram, Click here!

My problem with this new evidence is that the same fish they used… I bet none of them are as armored or front heavy as a Dunk would be. The swim bladder equivalent would need to be fairly sizable to offset the weight, even with the natural buoyancy of water, or the Dunk would just nosedive every time it tries to swim or just exist. That, or the body would need to be long or large enough to be naturally buoyant enough instead.

That's a very good point. Mass distribution would be a problem, and would required a front heavy Dunk to be a bit more balanced on the back end, otherwise is would be a tail-up bottom feeder. Not that we couldn't rule that out, but it certainly wasn't a detritivore. Seems to me a few rebuttal papers are in order...not to mention a full-body fossil lagerstatten...

Actually, assuming that you ended up time travelling to the Devonian period for whatever reason, Dunkleosteus’ smaller size would actually make it MORE dangerous to you, not less. This is because its shorter length, along with the size of the fish it would’ve fed on, would mean that it would be far more likely to consider you a food source than it would’ve at the original estimated size.

Honestly, Its probably scarier this way. A smaller body would mean its faster and more agile, like a barracuda. And from watching videos of barracudas cutting fishes in pieces, I wouldn`t want to be around a shark sized goldfish that could decapitate its prey in seconds! 😵

The funny thing is it doesn’t make it any less thicc or dangerous. Just means it’s got shortie rage as well which just adds to the danger

If anything it's more dangerous now because it's much faster and is still one of the largest animals of the time.

Nature does have some rules... somehow. It has to be a genetic thing that comes from a common ancestor? Right?

I am thinking of a big reef grouper with a pneumatic scissor like jaw.
That should be closer then the original 9m fish.
