Vietnamese Roasted Chicken - Ga Roti | Helen's Recipes

  • Ingredients
    2 chicken thighs and drumsticks (500g/ 1.1 lb)
    2 spring onion stem, green part chopped, white part minced
    1 large clove garlic, minced
    1 tsp five spice powder
    3 tbsp soy sauce
    1 tbsp cooking wine (optional)
    1 tbsp sugar
    1/2 tsp salt
    1/2 tsp pepper
    1 tsp honey
    1 tsp vinegar
    Dipping sauce: 2 tbsp soy sauce, 1 tsp sugar, chopped fres chili pepper

    3 ms nước tương (xì dầu)
    1 mcf tỏi băm
    1 ms đầu hành băm
    1/2 mcf muối

    i love all your cooking videos. They are so easy to follow and I have tried alot of them..I'm half vietnamese. ´Vietnamese food has never interested me before because I find it really time consuming making it..But after watching your cooking videos, i started to like cooking viet food.     In Vietnam, they don't traditionally use ovens, so how did they bake it back in the day?

      They actually fried them. Nowasays, using the Air Fryer is an ideal idea 😊

    made this last week and it was deliciousss!! i seared it first, before putting in oven so that the skin could be more crispy (less healthy but oh well:) love your recipes, you're always my go-to for yummy Vietnamese recipes!! thank you Helen!

    Could skin it and simmer if one is conscious of fat intake. :)
    I love how someone else uses the microwave scallion oil method! I like it as it is so lazy but i find it tastes better to heat the oil on the hob.

    Yes, you can sear the chicken on both sides with a lillte oil and add in coconut soda/coconut juice/water and cook until the sauce evaporates. It tastes even better that way :P

    There is no substitute for five-spice powder, but you can make your own with 3 cinnamon sticks, 5 star anise, 1 1/2 teaspoons fennel seeds, 1 1/2 teaspoons whole cloves and 3/4 teaspoon black peppercorns. Grind in a coffee or spice grinder until finely ground.

    It depends on the oven. Some can make the skin crispy. But this recipe is not meant to make crispy roasted chicken. I made "ga roti", not "ga nuong da gion" hihi

    Hi Helen, I noticed that you wrote 1 tbsp cooking wine (optional), I have cooking wine and wondering when to put it in. Do I put it in the marinade? Did you use cooking wine in yours? I am marinating this overnight!
