I've found that the fastest way to get a lot of leaf fenestrations in my monsteras is to give them plenty of light, and to _consistently prune old leaves._ I have two in my office that each have two stems. I keep a maximum of two leaves per stem, pruning the least fenestrated leaf off every time a new one is pushed out. Using this method, my plants have gone from juvenile looking leaves to fully fenestrated leaves in just a few months.

I am a British expat working in Riyadh, I have to admit I spritz my plants often (perhaps the arid air makes less susceptible to the risks you mentioned). I will however, share with you my observation & experience with spritzing pothos, immediately produced more leaves and a luscious bushy appearance. I'm a new plant parent and I added a monstera Deliciosa to my budding plant collection about 5 months ago (I have 11 plants so far and the one I've had the longest is a little over a year old.) I'm not sure how old it is, but it was it was about 2 feet tall, had 3 medium to large leaves/stems and for little ones near the base. One of the bigger leaves had full separation and the other bigger one had only one line of separation.
During the third month I noticed a new (bigger) leaf/stem was growing so of course I was super excited to see that it was showing signs of happiness since this is my first Monstera. Once the leaf started unraveling I could see that it had FULL separation on both sides. Is it often that new leaves can bloom with full separation, or is it like a rare occurrence? Great vids by the way :)

It might be worth noting that the aerial roots will try to attach themselves to any surface where they can get a hold. I had one that attached itself to a limestone wall and mortar joints, damaging the weak surfaces. They'll even attach to a painted surface given free reign.

My monstera looks to be 4 plants, I bought it at Costco. It is huge and has gotten out of control, I give it a gallon of water every week, it looks like there can't be much dirt, it's so crowded. The stems are very thick. However, I was gone 10 days and it looks perfect. I'm going to find some bamboo poles to make it go up, it's taking up so much room now. Thanks for your channel.

The fenestration is ok but not many central holes. I keep cutting it back to prevent growth, they need a lot of elbow room, but sometimes I'll propagate them and pass them on as gifts.

The easiest way I found to propagating is use the ariel roots them selves. I put a jar with water with the root in it. This makes changes it from an air root to a normal root which will allow the plant to sustain itself. Once I feel that the root has di eloped well enough then I cut it from the leaf and root from the node just below and there you have it, ready to pot. I find this method to be very successful and the leaves are similar in size as the one I propagate from.

For a climbing apparatus that the roots can grow into, would it prefer a moss poll or would a homemade pipe with burlap or jute string be okay?
Also, I got a MASSIVE Monstera, it's my first and it's looking similar to the one you mentioned in your bedroom, I'd like to try and "tuck" it's shape, but I the stems don't exactly tilt back up without breaking. So, to fix this, would I need to place the pole and use taut string to slowly direct the stems upwards? Or is too late now that they're all outwards?

Thanks so much for the wealth of information. I love my Monstys but, being in southern Australia, this can mean a juggle to find a balance of good light without burning the poor things. This is my second plant, the first being a gift that I had no success with. The new leaves would be brown and curled as soon as they unfurled and the poor thing ended up passing on (no doubt an over-parenting error!).
My second plant is fairly young but appears happy, although I've noticed a couple of the latest leaves are also brown and curled on one side as they unfurled. The plant doesn't have any direct light due to the strength of the summer sunshine but has a fair amount of indirect light. What causes this browning, and am I safe to remove it? How far down the stem should I cut when removing damage? Any help will be welcome!!!

Great videos! I am a big fan of monsteras, and have a quite monstrous one in my tiny apartment.
I was away from my monstera for a few weeks and forgot to keep the curtains open. While it does stand next to the window, it only got light through a relatively thick white curtain for the last 3-4 weeks. The older leaves still look perfectly fine, but all the newer leaves look quite damaged (edges are brown, and leaves have become flimsy, wavy, and yellow-ish).
Should I cut these damaged leaves? Doesn't a new leaf grow always from the "most recent" leave on a stem? So if I cut that "most recent" leaf, will I not inhibit new leaf growth? Thanks!

    • @SheffieldMadePlants

If your pot size can accommodate it without overcrowding, you could get another smaller plant to climb the stems of your monstera; mini monstera (raphidophora tetrasperma) is particularly suited, as it doesn't usually have a huge root system compared to it's size, and the leaves match that of the monstera really well without being too big themselves.

One stem/plant for a pot, but the one in your bedroom looks like she has 3 main stams or like 3 plants in one pot. Can I plese ask on your opinion about this? Thank you and I love your videos.

I always thought monstera deliciosas preferred shade since they were jungle plants. I was surprised to learn that they like plenty of light (which, in hindsight, is 1) obvious for most plants and 2) makes sense for something that climbs trees). Now, I'll plan to move my monstera somewhere else it can get more light, and hopefully it will become more lush with time. It's currently growing rather slowly and maybe the increase in light will help with that - being more energy and all.

I'm still contemplating to buy Monstera deliciousa for my room. I saw mature Monstera sold at an expo in my small town last January but I didn't buy them due to some reasons.
Is Monstera can handle normal room humidity?
I bought some philodendron last year for my room and they were growing well but after 2-3 months, their new leaves started to unfurled and it hurt the leaves. I found out that it was because of low humidity. I was using humidifier that time but the leaves still like that so I moved all those philodendrons that have that problems outdoors under net shade. They're philodendron royal queen, philodendron mayoi, philodendron pedatum, philodendron silver sword and philodendron mamei. They're thriving very well and have bigger leaves now.
I'm still considering to buy Monstera, maybe just a small one for now. I have to make space for rare aglaonema in my wish list too hehe.

At first, I have easy philo such as heartleaf philodendron and philodendron micans. They're thriving so I wanted to try other philodendrons. When I saw my new philodendrons are thriving, I bought more of them. Good thing I stopped when I experienced the unfurled leaves. If not, I may add more of my heartbreak.
Lately, the price of philodendron gloriosum at nurseries in my country dropped to a really affordable price so I contemplating to buy either that or monstera deliciosa. Both are around same price now but I think I will only choose one because of limited space.
I have Monstera Peru in my room that I bought mid last year. They're growing well but the leaves getting smaller. I think it also flowering some time ago ( small cluster of flowers) . Only recently that the new leaves are back to the original size. I don't even use moss pole or anything. I guess it finally acclimate to my room for real this time.

Hey there, so my monstera has had curly leaves and hasn't produced new ones since i bought it this summer. Its leaves also don't have the shine of healthy ones. It looks pretty dry. Yet i repotted it in peat moss as i read that's what it prefers. I thought i'd put it right below the window after watching your video, although i have a very bright living room, living on the 6th floot. Anyway i thought i'd check for root rot before doing that and i realise i had left it in its original clay-like soil when i repotted it. The roots did make their way out into the new soil but not that much. So i removed the clay with a thick stick. I was a bit agressive with it tbh and some roots were inevitably lost. But i hope it does better now that it really is in peat moss. Thanks for the watering tip, I used to water just a little bit every day because i thought it's a tropical plant and again, it looks so dry. Anyway thanks again.

You keep showimg philodendron selloum in this video which might confuse people. its not a monstera. Pruning can help dependimg whether its a large form or not.

My monstera is on a west facing window and gets a lot of afternoon light and grows HUGE leaves over 24in long, but the stems keep growing super long so I am not sure if my plant just wants to be big or what...

Two of your plant footages were of Philodendron, not Monstera.
