    After watching Dave's videos over the last couple of weeks, I resolved to close my credit cards. I just canceled my American Express Card after paying off $8,300 today! Just say NO to credit cards!!

      What Dave gave is his opinion. Not a law. I think credit cards are useful for online purchases and boosting your credit score. However, if you predict that you won't be able to pay back your debt on time, then you should simply avoid using one for that specific purchase. To recap, use it if it's convenient and safe, otherwise don't.

    Amen, Dave! Credit card companies understand our human nature better than we do. They know that if they just wait, we will give in and go in to debt. Thanks for giving us the What, the Why and the How to get rid of them.

    Oh man, did I get the run around when I cancelled mine. Chase waved the points at me. Amex went over all the many benefits I would miss out on. Nah, I'd rather have money.

      AMEX told me that they would claw back my signup bonus if I canceled even though I had already paid the annual fee, and I was not asking for the annual fee back. Canceling in August when their arbitrary deadline passes. Never again.

    When I closed my mastercard in 2008, they did not beg to keep me nor ask to lower my APR (25.99%). They simply closed it. Same for my Amex Blue Cash card, I was not offered a lower APR, it was just closed.

      I don't see anything wrong with a credit card. As soon as we charge anything we enter it into Quicken, treat the charge just like any other money spent. Pay off any charges in full every month, the money is there since it is "spent" as soon as it is charged. So many places will not take a check now that a credit card is a requirement. I sure don't want to carry that much cash..................

    • @suew2009

      No problem. I use my debit card for everything now. If I don't have the money, I don't buy it until I do.
      Have you thought of making that change?

    • @suew2009
      @suew2009 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not even a consideration, too old to change the habit which works fine. From the day of my first credit card I did it this way and our children do also.

    I actually had an easy time cancelling my Wells Fargo credit card.
    The most she said was "ahh, that's to bad. Why are you leaving us?" "I just don't want anything more to do with debt." I replied. That's the most she said, and she even offered to send me written confirmation.

    I grew up with a blue collar working class father and a stay at home. My parents rented until my dad’s father passed. My dad was able to move into his childhood home and I was lucky enough to grow up there. When my dad sold it due to a drastic turn in the community, he sold it for 5 times he paid for it. (Half From his brother). He bought another house cash. Bought a brand new car for the first time in his life at 50 yrs old. Retired at 60. Sold the house for double. Moved to a warmer climate bought a house cash. It’s now worth 1&1/2 what he paid. He’s never had a credit card. He’s never had debt. He lived within his means. It can be done.

      Used to work cashier/layaway in retail. We don't care in the slightest if you use credit or debit or our store credit card. Card reader took care of the "credit or debit" question anyway.
      Also, on the store credit card...I 100% agree, we don't benefit. I'm not even sure if we got commission for selling it (if we did, it was minuscule)...it was certainly the last of my priorities.

    My banker suggested that I need a credit card to keep up my credit score . Got it never used it and they sent me a letter that they were closing my account for lack of use . 6 years later my credit score is fine and never have had a loan or credit card so proof that score is not tied to credit cards . I realize that score is used to prove credibility in some circumstance . Went in to buy a used truck one time the sales rep insisted on running my score came back and said I was good for any car I needed , ended up not buying because he said the only way he could sell me one with a loan .

    I have noticed that it is extremely easy to get into debt/bondage but almost impossible to get out from under it without punishment! Thankfully I never had credit cards but when I paid off my student loans, I took a massive hit on my credit score!!! Of course from doing my research ahead of time I did expect that to happen but it still boggles the mind that I could be punished for doing the right thing and getting RID of the debt. It's sad to see that when people finally want to give up the plastic they are punished through harassment by so called customer service reps instead of congratulated for getting their finances in order. It's such a shame, really!

  • @SuperDevin7777

    I will admit, I use credit myself. I bought into the product...but I use it carefully.
    I keep a spreadsheet that tracks every penny i earn and spend, which I update as soon as I make a purchase. I just simply use the cards to facilitate the budgeted spending. I use the credit over debit since most of my family, and a ton of other people, got burned by card skimmers in my hometown. Regardless of the credit option on debit cards, though...it's still your account balance that is on the line. I would rather not have the $ in my own account on the line when something like that happens....Heck, even with credit, I still give card readers at pumps a good jiggle before i swipe. ATM's get the same treatment (My main use of my debit).
    I collect rewards too, but Card rewards are just a bonus... not an excuse to spend more than you can afford (although that IS their intention, to get you to spend a ton on it).
    BUT, credit is definitely not for everyone. I'm not a typical credit user; most users get themselves in trouble or cost themselves a ton of money on the high APR of credit cards...Which is how credit is a billion dollar industry. Unless you're obsessive about your finances, I would suggest following Dave's advice and avoid the card companies like the plague. Since you're watching Dave's channel, there's a good chance that you fall into the non-obsessive/non-disciplined category. In that case, you should definitely stick with Dave (and just jiggle anything you put your debit card into, if you're concerned about skimming), as it is hard to go wrong with avoiding the easiest and most effective way to get into debt in the first place. With great power, comes great responsibility ;)

      Daryl liggins I think you will find that some employers will do a credit check on a potential employee. Having a good score is not a bad thing. Having long-term debt is.

    • @hagarolsen
      @hagarolsen 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      jvolstad that’s a choice that might be right for you but it’s not the Dave Ramsey way. He doesn’t have a credit score and he advocates that for us too, even though not having a credit score may have some drawbacks in modern society. He mentions the scenario that he couldn’t rent an apartment in some buildings because they require a credit score. He could buy the building, but he would not be able to rent there. He asserts that not having a credit score and the few scenarios where that would be if a detriment , are not worth the risk of having a credit card

    • @jvolstad
      @jvolstad 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Marie Olsen What risk is there in a credit card? I have a couple of credit cards myself and use them all the time for for daily expenses as well as traveling. I never carry a balance and my score is 800+. I don't use credit cards to have a credit score, I use them as a tool. For people who can't control their spending, by all means cut them up. It's better however to develop self-control.

    • @droptozro
      @droptozro 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've not used a credit card in years even though I still have some in my wallet. It made it easier to get a low interest loan for our house. The fact that three places showed 800+ credit scores even though I've NOT(as Dave often claims) gone into hundreds of thousand of dollars in debt plus interest. The most debt I'd had in all my past was $13k on a small house and before that maybe a total of $4000 debt over time(meaning not all at once). That was a long time ago though, the other credit card debt. The last charge I made was to fix a car 3 years ago and I paid it off in 2 months and haven't used it since. I don't advocate them, most people can't handle their finances well it seems due to lack of self-control, but there's no doubt it made getting a house loan and past rentals easy.

    Remember how difficult those open-ended 4 page papers were to write in 6th grade? You had to determine a topic and structure it from beginning to end. If you were such a person to complete these homework assignments, it was probably because you would be held accountable, therefore you had the discipline. You are such a candidate for creating financial success. You need to do it again. You need to feel those 6th grade accountable feelings again and devise a plan. You may need to devise 10 plans... If you dread + avoid those feelings, you'll never have a plan and you're going to live a mediocre life (with Dave's no-debt encouragement), at best.

While I was sitting in my car waiting for cash to be dispensed from ATM, some guy approached my car and took my cash, while I was in state of shock. The BOA ended up refunding me the money even though cash was already out of the ATM. So I am guessing banks may reimburse you for unauthorized purchases.

    Have 1 and pay it off every month. I have mine through my credit union. In 0 debt and have a credit score of 753 and have plenty in savings. This is one of Dave's only dishonest positions. He has good intentions though- his position does help compulsive spenders.

    I use my Amex Platinum Card everywhere, even though I have the money to buy it. I always pay it off for necessities and acquire points, so why not? We have hackers and frauds out there . A debit card is a direct line to my money, but a credit card is a direct line to someone else's money. Better to risk theirs than mines.

    I recently cancelled my Best Buy credit card. The agent told me to call 1-800-whatever if I changed my mind and wanted to get another account. In the next breath she warned me that if I canceled my card I might never be able to get another one. LOL

      Thank you. Being progressive doesn't mean we don't want to handle money, and Dave Ramsey has a thing or two to learn from us as well.
