Puerto Rico in the northeast Caribbean Sea is home to over 3 million people with an additional 150,000 people living on the nearby Virgin Islands. In January 2020, Puerto Rico was rattled for more than three weeks by over 400 earthquakes greater than M3. This animation looks at the broader tectonic setting and earthquake history of the area.

Can't be grateful enough for this knowledge. Thank you. I live here in Puerto 🇵🇷 Rico and my wish is that the educators of this beautiful Island be more thorough on this such an important topic. It's all about learning and saving lives. Some educators avoid the topic, they're are legitimate frightened. Even some members of my family stop me cold. It's a sad reality but that won't stop me from speaking about it. Sending love ❤️ to all! Please 🙏 stay safe. God bless!

Damn, as a current geophysics student, I'm really loving these tectonics of places videos. The animation and voiceover are fairly modern and high quality, and very educational.
Another small thing, I really lke the bassy, crackling earthquake rupture sound at 1:38. Sounds satisfying.

damn. As a geology student myself wanting to specialize in earthquakes, I was puzzled by the hows and whys of this earthquake sequence for a long time

There was 2 strong earthquakes today in PR/VI. It measured 5.3 and 5.0 on the Richter scale.

I was wondering about the rise in mag. and frequencies of earthquakes in Puerto Rico. This is 2024 and I wondered what fault caused this. So finding out it is connected to the Puerto Rico Trench has made me curious.. Finding out how deep it is made me think of what dangers could exist if there was a major shift in the trench. I know that such a deep shift under the ocean would displace a lot of water. How much damage could that cause ? We haven't seen much yet except what you've described here. I'm glad you went over what has happened in the past It is most helpful to understanding what could happen in the future.

the what boundary is curved? The Convergent Plate Boundary. I am doing geology too. Love learning about the earth and the weather and rocks and all sorts of things.

Thanks. Fascinating. Ah, to be a student now-a-days. Considering the awesome power of earthquakes, video games, no matter how good, can never compare. Forget pretend superheroes, seismologists are real heroes. In the 1970s, quantum mechanics had more physical and mathematical appeal. Now, the computer visualizations and the sophisticated mathematics of seismology would make my career decision very difficult.

How do you teach this stuff to people that think God made the earth 12,000 years ago?

How can you people truly believe the earth is zillions of years old? YOU want to trust a science and put your faith in technology that has barely been around for a century, telling you that us humans will be around forever, so you don't feel as guilty about the crap you do on a day to day basis that ruins the earth. Sciencents never want to rule in the possibility of something bigger being at play. You need to feel safe. As a Christian, God teaches you that nothing lasts forever except Him. I put my faith in Christ, in being a Christian. Something that DOES have scientific and physical evidence to back it up. Man made science, so he could feel superior to our creator. And men who act evil are working on evil's behalf. The elite are using science to push fear into our hearts. And that is the kind of fear that evil tries to spread through lies. Evil knows no bounds. It will use anything to further its own survival. THIS is why most Christians believe street smarts out rank books smarts. Experience counts more than education, but knowledge and wisdom are only gained through the power of pain. Your science may explain HOW these events take place, but it doesn't explain the WHY. God's plan is ineffable.

1500 people in the USVI???? ST THOMAS surely has more than that living there. It's a small island, but there's a LOT of houses.
