Another awesome museum! Some seriously drool-worthy cars in that place.
The public spirited Mr. Hubnut does the right thing! Idiots on the road, everywhere you go in the world. Could've ended so much worse and I think it was the right time for the police to become involved. Ian, you Sir are a good egg!

The mechanical gate on the Rolls brought back some memories! When I was a kid, the playground closest to my home had one of the coolest things in the world, a real 1920s fire engine! It had been put there in the late 50s or early 60s I think and survived into the 1990s, although with more and more parts either disappearing or being welded into place. The gear lever was gone by the time I played there but the mechanical gate was there until the end. The handbrake lever survived too but it was welded into position to prevent injury. One thing that did move right until the end was the steering wheel, although it didn't do anything, just turned freely. The happy memories! Supposedly it was restored to driving condition, so that's actually a good thing, but no one seems to know where it's kept.
I think now there's a wooden replica with two steering wheels to keep the kids from squabbling :-)

A lot of those white coloured rocks you walked on were pushed up by the huge 7.8 earthquake in November 2016. The power of nature! The road and railway were destroyed and closed for 13 months. Amazing collection of beautiful old cars, Heather Small lead singer of M People had one of the big Cadillac like the last one shown 19m.28s

  • @baltobenz9508
    @baltobenz9508 4 ปีที่แล้ว

The part on the Cadillac wipers you referred to as a brake is actually a track to keep the wiper arm, which is on a pivot, at the correct angle as it traveled around the wraparound windshield. The range of the wipers are from the base of the windshield in the center of the car to the base of the windshield on the side of the car. I had a 1960 coupe and they worked surprisingly well as they pushed the water completely off the front of the windshield and around to the side, past the door and the tail fin to collect behind the rear bumper where it would start corrosion that eventually caused your taillight assembly to fall out and hang by it’s wires. Good times.

Agree on the Coupe de Ville, bloddy marvelous looking. As for the Mustang, I drove a 66 back in late winter in 85. Not much road feel to be honest and part of the trip was over a mountain with snowy roads. Summer tires in front, studded winter tires in the rear, no heat, didn't idle, brakes needed pumping, didn't brake in straight line, my teeth chattered like hell from the cold but I was 19 and drove a 66 Mustang with a 289 and four on the floor. Awesome times.

That whole area around Kaikōura got trashed by the 2016 earthquake, the sea floor south of an East-West fault line got moved up 1 meter.
Sewerage plant destroyed, all roads into the town blocked, The main road you drove on (and it's parallel rail line) were buckled, broken, and buried under thousands of tons of dirt and rock.
Took a few months to bodge together roads that were passable with 4WD vehicles.

Quick thinking to pull over. Good that you are OK. Be careful we have bad drivers in Australia too. I have driven in most states. Doing under speed limit is rammed down our throats in Oz. So some drivers think as long as they are not speeding they are being safe (and stop thinking). I found driving in Old Blighty with British drivers much better, and safer. Stay safe and enjoy your well earned break:)

It doesn't sound like you're a Mustang fan, but even though they were introduced mid model year in 1964 they were all titled as '65. However, they made some significant changes in calendar year '65 that caused collectors to refer to the earliest ones as '64 1/2. For one thing they switched from a generator to an alternator and the V8 models grew from 260 to 289 c.i.

For the benefit(...?) of your city-dwelling fans Ian, a "long-drop" toilet is pretty much what it says on the tin (or the can, if you like). There's a pedestal, a seat (optional) and a large, deep (and hopefully dark) hole. Some are self-composting (usually residential, you throw earth, sand, straw in to help the composting process); most of the public ones are "serviced" and emptied out.
21:43 - that's life on the road for you, you never know what odd vignettes are next. Providing it's just bent metal and a bruised ego, carry on down the road.

@@Pfirtzer If your sole aim is to attract women by the car you drive (which mine is not) then I guess maybe a Jaguar DBS or Lamborghini might do the job. Usually driven by people who's size of genitalia is in inverse proportion to the supposed 'pulling power' of their car. If, on the other hand you want a mechanically simple, comfortable estate car for going to gigs with PA, electric piano, drum kit, etc, or for everyday use in transporting tools and sometimes piano actions around, then it fits the bill rather well. I have always found that women are attracted by my personality and musicianship, rather than by whatever vehicle I might drive. In other words, women who are not shallow bimbos. Capish?

I have a memory from many years ago of a magazine article about driving the Cord which commented on the preselector gearbox being rather brutal. The next edition had a follow-up saying it had been pointed out that it was a conventional gearshift with a servo mechanism not a preselector and using [it] as one was abusing the interlock that stopped you changing gear unless the clutch was depressed, so no wonder it was abrupt.

16:39 The Edsel was actually billed as a "Mid Priced" full-size car, stuck in there with brands like Mercury, Oldsmobile, and Chrysler (the Chrysler-branded cars were slotted above Dodge and below imperial, in the U.S. market). Large Edsels (there were 2 wheelbases) were produced in various U.S. plants including one in Sommerville, MA, which has since been converted into the Assembly Square Markeplace shopping mall. One irony about the Edsel project was that the mid-priced market segment was already in decline, leaving an open question about whether models between the bread-and-butter models and brands like Cadillac and Lincoln should even exist; many of the then current mid-priced makes were remnants from corporate takeovers in earlier years. To this day, Mercury, Oldmobile and Pontiac have all disappeared, though Chrysler and Buick are still going .

That last segment reminds me of the tale of Road Dreams by Elliot Bristow. He went to USA on a fortnights holiday, witnessed a shooting and was compelled to stay in USA for 12 years. He shot lots of cine film whilst there which eventually was spliced together to make a TV show.

On the cadillac wipers the bit you refer to as some form of brake, I think you will find they are a cam track that is meant to lift the wiper blades up and over the screen surround for parking ,the track is now in the wron position as are the wiper blades for parked position.
