I want to personally tell you how good you are at this! You have a simple and humble way of teaching. Years ago when I started working on and collecting atc’s I thought about doing repair tutorials but I didn’t! I’m glad you are doing them and I pray you are blessed for it sir. Thank you for your video’s!
Man,thank you so so much. You would not believe the hassle I've had trying to find someone to do this. Anyone AMA certified said they could lose their certification if they worked on them.(3 wheelers.) I'm fairly mechanically inclined but the Chiltons manual wasn't a big help. You are without a doubt the best how to video of any subject I've seen. Very thorough, very well explained. Thanks again my friend.
What a great explanation of the clutch and how to install the replacement parts and what to look for, makes me feel like I'm right there watching you do all this, and understanding how it works. In the past I've had two 85 Big Reds and never had any trouble with clutches, both machines were pretty strong with out any slippage and would do a wheelie pretty easy and had max power to the ground in 5th gear. I could smoke a foreman 500 easy on top end. my first Big Red would run just under 65 MPH It was strong. I would love to find another one like that.
Guessing this is very similar to the 185s, took mine out to the dunes for labor day and had some slip between higher gears. Parts are stacking on the shelf for this winters overhaul. Thank you!
Awesome video. Just the right amount of teaching through speech and visuals. I'm not afraid to tear into any mechanical job and this type of video makes it easy.
Currently doing a one way bearing replacement on an 85 and ran into the same problem with the mislabeled direction. Your video saved the day and my sanity. My box looked like yours and I suspect they both came from a major distributor of aftermarket parts for these bikes. Take the time to check, y’all! Thanks for your video, sir.
Thanks for sharing John, yes always double check that bearing after install, I am glad the video could help. Thanks for watching please like, share and subscribe.
Thank you Sir for your experience and professional Courtesy. I’m about to open up my 250 SX and find out What’s the problem with my hard shifts and miss shifts in between third gear and it seems like you’ve already let me in on the secret.
You are the man Thanks, what you suggested about moving the reverse lever was dead on. It works now, and I was about to pull the side cover off. Thanks again and keep up the great videos you do, I have learned a ton from you!
My one way bearing is bad on my 86 thank you for this video. It wirs and clunks when I shut it off I bought an OEM one a couple years ago and haven't changed it because I'm nervous but feeling better now after seeing this I think I can do it. Thanks very much for the video
Your bad ass you show your work and your good at what you do when I work on my threewheeler I go to you keep up the good work thank you for what you do your very helpful
Just installed a clutch kit with new clutch discs and springs on a 1982 Honda 185s atc. The new springs we’re about 1/4” longer than the old springs. I had to press the spring retainer pretty hard to begin each bolt. Once installed I tightened the 4 screws all the way to the stops. Clutch discs are not loose at all. Is this correct? Are the clutch docs supposed to be slightly loose or tight?? Thanks. Good job on your videos. Very methodical on your presentations!!
Hey ben, no that's not right you should be able to start each bolt by hand no problems and not fight the springs. Make sure all your disc are flush in the clutch basket, if they are you have the wrong springs. I believe the 250cc trike use longer springs than the 200cc machines. You may have issues changing gears and the clutch not freewheeling.
Theoretically, couldn't a feller get some 6 mm stud's to help out on the case gasket situation. Just remove them one at a time and replace with bolts? Also how do you feel about anerobic sealant on the case which can be spread thinner vs the risk of RTV squeezing into the engine and clogging stuff. Love you're videos 👍 I have a 85 big red and and 84 200 and a 84 70 with a 125 cc
Sure you could install a couple studs. For that matter you could leave them in and put a nut on them, like the exhaust. I have never used that type of sealant. Sounds like a nice collection, the 84 atc200, is a nice bike, and you dont see them as often as 185s or 200s . Thanks for watching, I'm glad you enjoy the channel
I have the 250 es with reverse with shaft drive I need a new clutch for it !!! where do I find one. since I got it 6 yrs ago I put 60,000km on it far and I think it is the centrufugal clutch might be giving out now. when I shut down it sounds like something spinning the ca chunk !!! but if run's fine and still takes off like a rocket !!!
Finally got the bigred out and running after a few years. Drained the old gas out and put in new and the carburetor was dry, last time it was ran, with it running the fuel cock was shut off and the engine ran til it stalled. It started on the 3rd kick. I did notice once it’s been warmed up and running with no choke on if the throttle isn’t slightly feathered it will stall. Don’t know if this is a carb related thing or the idle simply needs turned up, that idle position has been the same for most of its life if not all of it. The other thing I noticed with the engine running and slightly revving the engine as the revs die down there’s a slight backfire, any ideas on what direction to look?
More likely than not the idle jet is plugged up and the back fire may be the choke sticking, clean the carb and choke and try again. Glad to hear another is back on the move! Thanks for watching.
Great job and video, I have a 250sx that has that engine on it and every time I push the shifter down it hangs and I have to pull it back up with my foot, where is the return spring on that shifter at. Thanks
On the left side, there is a paw that has a spring just behind it on the shifter shaft, it can breat of slip out of position. Page 9-0 in the service manual.
Great video. I have an 86. Looking for some insight or possible direction. Many years ago 2 buddies of mine were trying to start the big red since the battery was dead and had no luck with the kick starter. Unknown to me at that time they decided to try and bump start it which isn’t possible since it’s an auto/clutch not manual. They pulled it with another atv and were clicking it up into 3rd 4th 5th gears and told me there were some grinding noises. Now whenever you’re riding in that 3rd 4th 5th gear range there’s this hellacious grinding/pinging noise and it stops putting power to the rear wheels if you hurry up and downshift it comes right back to life and you keep riding like it never happened. Now this doesn’t happen all the time but does it every once in a while. Any insight on where to start looking into this? Thanks.
@@Mrcbuilds Thanks! keep up the good work! not many videos on here showing how to work on trikes anymore , big reds specifically! Been looking for a video on the replacement of my air filter & gear leaver
@@Mrcbuilds Any recommendations on where to order a new clutch set ? decided if i’m going to do the bearing i might as well do the clutch as well, i have 1985 !
@@Stepbrother7390 ebc makes a good product you can find steels and disc and spring by EBC on ebay. The clutch factory and tusk are good brands too. If its a machine your going to ride and keep, id get a 1 way bearing by shindy and a new gasket. You would never have to go back in that side of the engine.
@@Mrcbuilds odd that you would say that i have a one way bearing / gasket & oil filter from there sitting here waiting for a nice day to put it on ! & definitely going to keep this one , the frame is almost perfect for a 40 year odd year old bike. Hard to find one without rust/ tiny hole in the frame this day in age !
I see in the service manual about greasing the swingarm pivot points and steering head bearings. Are there grease zercs in there? I don’t see any on the swingarm.
I'm pretty sure you would loose the primary clutch, it may not be able to take off. I have never had the happen, so I'm not certain. But that's my best guess.
Hey MRC, I have some major issues with my 85 250es and was hoping you could point me in the right direction. It started popping out of gear into a neutral state where I then have to shift back into gear and it bangs back in. Also downshifting into gears has become very difficult. Finding the real neutral and staying in it is very difficult, if I push down it goes to neutral and light comes on but when I release it ends up in gear again. Also when in neutral and shifting up to 1st when I release the shift lever it lunges forward briefly. I am ready to pull it apart but but unsure what I should be looking for. Any ideas?
I should add that the trike first presented downshifting issues when it got hot ( long rides) and then progressed to popping out of gear and now always having downshifting issues
Hi Thomas. I would change the clutch springs, then adjust the shifter slop and see if that helped, otherwise I think it could be a bent/worn shifter fork. that would require splitting the case, I tend to start with the easy and cheaper options before I jump into the hard stuff.
@@Mrcbuilds so I was feeling inspired after watching your video for the second time and took the left side cover off to see if the bolt under the shift shaft was broken or loose. It is not damaged but was loose by about a quarter turn but not damaged. I then removed the right side cover and discovered that I had an ear broken off the clutch basket and the center bearing would bind if I applied pressure to it. Now the piece that broke off is not in here, which leads me to believe the previous owner might have been in there since it had a new gasket and he gave me a spare set of frictions. I have a set of ebc friction plates and springs to throw in. I hope this takes care of it. If not I did just pick up a beater fourtrax 300 that I could swap the motor from I believe.
Good work sir. I just pulled my side case and my gear selector arm hit the ground. I know it's in neutral but I sure as heck don't know what position it was in. Any tips would be great
Best is refer to the manual. Thats good that its an obvious fix. The manual is free and can be downloaded from oscarmayer website. Search oscarmayer atv manuals
Hello mrc I really do appreciate u educating me on a lot thank u so much. And by the way is there anyway u can help me find a cdi box for my 85 250es I've looked all over and can't find one anywhere please help me thanks
Hi Thomas, that's a hard one to find, I would search eBay, make sure the seller guarantees it works. Otherwise ask on the FB forums like Honda Hoarders and ATC collectors. If your on 3wheelerworld.com that is a great resource too. Thanks for watching
I have had good luck with snug is good and a recheck after a few heat cycles for added insurance. The manufacture torque spec are listed at the beginning of each chapter in the repair manual.
I put new clutch and one way bearing in my 1986 big red, all of the gears work except reverse. What did I screw up on, would appreciate any advice you could send my way. Thanks Mrcbuilds.
More than likely you do not have the reverse lever installed properly. it is a wedge fit on the shaft. loosen and rotate it counter clockwise to allow for more pull of the cable, or you may just need to add more tension to the cable itself.
So if I rev it up and it does not go forward would you say that my centrifugal clutch is out? I can rev It up slam it in the first and I'll take off but it will not automatically go until I have the RPMs really high. If you think it is the centrifugal clutch where would I get one of those?
Ebay is the only place I know that has them, there is not a new one listed right now, you will have to wait until another pops back up for sale. If it was me, while I was in there I would change the one way bearing and clutch pack and springs here are links for those items. clutch pack and springs amzn.to/3B4Iwbd. here is a good one way bearing amzn.to/2Z9K46L.
@@rjlittlefield9209 yes the centrifugal clutch is the first or slow speed clutch, the the secondary or clutch plates kick in at higher rpms, not taking off is the centrifugal clutch slipping.
Hi would you have to adjust your clutch after putting a brand new clutch in? Or just bolt it up an go? I am about to order a clutch as mine slips alot I've adjusted it a few times I think I made it worse but wondering if you need to adjust it after replacing the clutch
I don't know how to reset them but thank you that still helps I've watched a few of your videos now and each one has tought me somthing new thanks for all those it helps me alot
I have not, the 86 carb addressed this problem. I really suggest a 300ex carb for these. The 300ex carb has a squirter that helps on cold start issues. I also reccomend 223cycles.net to purchase a worked honda carb.
Trying to replace the one way bearing and I go to remove the nut but everything keeps spinning, i see in the manual you need a clutch holder is there a way to do it without the exact holder?
So I'm having an issue putting the case back together, pretty much having trouble getting the reverse actuator spring where it needs to be. Any advice? Thanks
Theres a little shelf in the bottom of the case, rest the arl of the spring on it like I show in the video. Make sure the crank is going into the whole squarely and it will slide on.
I would suspect the 85 250sx and 250es are the same because they share the shame swing arms. Note the 86 and 87 swing arms are different. The drive shafts may be different also, I have not had to make that swap yet. Stick with the 85 models and I think you will be ok. You can cross reference the part numbers at partzilla if they share the same numbers they will interchange.
Awesome video just installed a new 1 way bearing on my 85 sx with your video help! But I still have a clunk on shut down on left side of case is the other 1 way bearing bad also?
Yes, you may be right. Go to partzilla.com and look up your bike and get familiar with the parts and where they are before you take it apart. I'm glad I could help on the one way bearing.
Hello from Costa Rica. I have a Big red like that, question:do u have a manual of it to repair the engine? I need to repair the gearbox(one bearing is damaged) but i want to have a manual to do that. Maybe u can helping me!!! Hugs!
I recently got an '85 TRX 250. It revs but hardly moves so I'm thinking clutch. It'll move on down the road , but not like it used to. Would the repair on that clutch be similar to this? I know there's no actual clutch level only a foot shifter. Any info is appreciated.
It should be exactly the same for a 85 tax. Thanks for watching and subscribing, there are links in the description for a clutch kit and one way bearing even oil and gasket.
@@Mrcbuilds I noticed that the link you have for the clutch in your description is for a CR250R. Will it be okay for me to order that for my fourtrax? and do I have to get the special socket? TIA
Just found your channel, great content! This video repair reminded me of an issue that I can't get a clear answer on. Hoping I can run it by you. 1984 200s. It switches gears ok but it is "banging" or "slamming" the gears. It not engaging neutral in between gear changes. Can you tell me what is not working or where I can look? Thank you sir. Keep up the videos!
Thanks for watching, I always check the easy things first and work toward the harder/more expensive fixes. Is the shifter hitting the bottom of the case/foot peg, preventing it from making full movement? if not then I would check the adjuster on the right side of the case, its a 14mm bolt with a flat head screw in the center. loosen the nut, tighten the screw till snug, then back off 1/4 turn, then tighten the 14mm bolt. If that does not fix it, I would replace the clutch and the springs, look in the descriptions of my video for links to the clutches as a kit. If a new clutch and springs does not fix it, then I am afraid it could be a synchronizer in the trans. Try the other options first, I bet its one of those.
@@Mrcbuilds Thanks for the prompt response. I hate to think it's the later issue. I've already replaced all the clutch plates and springs. I've also tried to adjust the right side. I just can't feel any "Springiness" in the shifter. Also when I hold down the shifter it should give me a "neutral" effect in between gears. Not the case. :( Thanks again!
@@28mrdetroit Holding the shifter should give you neutral, a lot of guys ride that way to mimic a clutch. on the right side case there is a spring, that rides on a arm that gives you the spring action in the shifter, when you pulled the right side off to install the clutches, you may have not aligned the spring correctly, it stays on the case, but can pop loose, tilt the bike up on its left side, pull the right side case cover and double check the spring, refer to the manual for the proper resting place of that spring. it's about 3 inches long.
I pulled my side cover and was checking everything out and my disc are worn about flat but have a groove . The centrifugal clutch looks well like yours . Now mine does not wheelie with easy it won't lift in 1st gear I have to be in low gear and lean back while stabbing it. I'm thinking of replacing the centrifugal clutch. Hi Rob, sure could be the centrifugal, also what type of oil did you put in it? regular or syn. motor oil will cause slipping, you need a specific Diesel oil or an ATV oil both will work in out ATC w/ wet clutches.
Honda GN4 and I saw your video where you talked MA or M2 ratings. Lifts front up good in low and stabb it. Maxed out at 35 mph on pavement engine was screaming and your video turned me on to the clutch.
Please, please, please ,,,,tell me how in the heck you removed the reverse lockout actuator off of the shaft. Its like its staked on. Im at a standstill. Please help me if you can.
@@Mrcbuilds thank you. I got it . Little heat ,3 prong puller. That son of bitch was on there though. Thank you for the quick response. What do I owe you?
The best way to explain it is you feel it stop moving as you tighten the bolt. If you have a rubber hammer or dead blow hammer, 1 or 2 good wacks, then see if the bolt is loose. Please Be careful, braking the bolt off in the crank can be terminal or at least very expensive to extract.
Hey man i have a 85 or 86 Honda 250es motor on a 95 honda 300 . My clutch screw is stuck and I took the right side off but couldn’t figure out what the problem was , anyways I didn’t touch nothing just removed case and put back on a few days later and had a time with the reverse gear cable I think it is and spring. When I put back together I got no neutral light and the my kick starter don’t spring back. What am I doing wrong? Any help would be appreciated. Thank
First download the free manual and study the diagram. There is a spring that must be correctly engauged for the kickstart to work. Sounds like the reverse cable is not installed correctly, its a tapered fit and the cable should be taught. Or no slack. With the cover off look inside and see why the screw is stuck. The nut it goes into may be striped and spinning. Did you get the shift star orientated corectly it has 2 half and 3 ball bearings. It must align correctly or it will not shift.
I appreciate you messaging me back . Here’s an update. Well after looking at my manual I printed out. On the kick starter I believe where the ratchet spring attaches to the case, on the ribbed piece. Well mine isn’t there anymore After a day or so i noticed it looked like it broke off. I got the clutch adjustment screw out and freed up and working now. As if today I Got the neutral light on , which has been a pain the last week. Got the case on , on the first try. Last week I tried for 3 days before I got it back on, to take right back off because forgot the oil screen. But went right back on, for the shifter not to move. Since then I’ve taken apart a few times. But I just got it back together a few minutes ago and shifter won’t budge. I don’t understand what’s happening!! I’m losing sleep over this thing, I’m about to start drinking HEAVY lol I threw a hammer and a few wrenches the other day. Any advice would be great!! Thanks😊
Basic hand tools are fine. 8mm, 10mm, 12mm, 14mm, 22mm and 24mm sockets, Phillips and flat screw drivers will just about take the entire bike apart. The first thing I recommend is to down load a free copy of the mechanics repair manual here. oscarmayer.net/atc/manuals/ also get the color coded wiring chart, that is a big help.
Have a 84 honda 200m atc and the cable need to be replaced do you need it to shift and is it auto shift or have to shift please I need help if you can get back Thang you
I was doing a cover swap, and I turned the primary clutch a little bit, it was pretty tight to turn. Now the bike is stuck in gear, shifter moves up and down but wont grab gears. Any ideas?
Just subscribed ☺ I'm 16 and recently started flipping bikes and ended up with a 250es that had a rough rough life. I've got it running good now but it's always good to file info like this away if I ever need it. As I was certainly not around when these machines were made and I am totally self taught with no one I can ask questions it's nice to see your videos as someone who really knows these machines well. One question though, I've rebuilt the carb in my 250es and everything is spotless but if you try and give it very much gas it bogs, you can get on the main jet and rev it out and all but you have to ease into it. I don't know if these have accelerator pumps but if you even just give it half throttle quickly it bogs out and I thought maybe accelerator pump but I don't think it has one? Any ideas? The carb is spotless like I said, and it doesn't smoke a single bit, I don't know if adjusting the needle would help or what. Any way, thanks again for your time and work on these videos I really appreciate them and that big red is so so clean man!
Welcome to the channel Smokey Bandit (awesome name!) If you are certain the pilot jet is clean, than change the plug, a weak ignition can cause stumbles and hiccups also. (no these did not have an accelerator pump). get a new plug and gap it, hold it against the frame and spin the engine over, you should have a good strong blue arc on the plug, if it is yellowish and very small you may need a coil, test it before replacing it with a ohm meter first. The more modern 350ex 4 wheeler carb is a good upgrade for these bikes. If you opt to get the 300ex carb you will need the throttle cable that fits it. Thanks for watching, I have a video about flipping bikes coming up soon. Keep an eye out for it. Be sure and hit the subscribe button and bell so you don't miss it.
@@Mrcbuilds Thanks so much! I have checked for spark and its nice and strong but it could probably use a new plug. I've been thinking about doing the 300ex carb, does it fit directly in the intake or is there any modification needed? I will just use a pod filter, I'm not worried about the air box.
Something to check: With the carb off- see if the butterfly/throttle plate moves at the same time the slide moves. They kinda get tweaked after awhile & wont move together-(at the same time....
i have one more ? i just got this 1985 250 sx when i shift it into gear it hesitates then lunges forward in first then then not as bad after its moving any idea what it may be

Hey jamie look in the description of that video you will find links to most parts. As for part numbers i use www.partszilla.com for references and bounce there price off amazon.
That is a CLEAN engine block. I need to ask a goofy question, that valve cap topper (not the valve caps, the whole pan head), is there a gasket for that that exists anywhere? or is it supposed to just mate flat flush, trying to bring one back to life, 85 250es. Runs and rides alright, but clutch is one of the things slated for next year when it gets warm again. Beautifying the block is just one of the things next year, and I see nothing about a gasket for that part.
Hey there. Just bought my first 1984 Honda Big Red 200es. Trying to find a good brand for the whole kit to do the clutch. I’m only seeing a complete kit less the one-way bearing, from Caltric Clutch on Amazon. Not sure if they are any good or not. Very little reviews. What’s the name of the company that you recommend for the entire kit? I know you said something during the video but I looked for that name and could not find it. I am probably not spelling it correctly. Thanks in advance!
I have used that kit many times, I like Versch brand or the clutch factory are both good brands and you will get the coil springs, intermediate plate and clutch disc. as for the 1 way bearing I like the Shindy brand bearing. Thanks for watching
When I use the kickstart on my eighty Five, Honda three, Wheeler 250ES. When I try to kick it over with the kick start. It's not turning the engine over and I don't understand that. What do I need to replace in the 3 Wheeler?
Hey Bill, my first thought is the one way bearing, that machine has 2 one under the primary clutch on the right side and another on the left side on the flywheel
Good morning, I was actually attempting to adjust my valves as I heard them getting louder. FWD...I realized that the exhaust adjusting screw and nut were not on the rocker....Took top cover off and they are not on the top end anywhere. IS it possible they can fall down the timing chain hole to the bottom right side of the engine? crazy part is I have been riding it at least 4 hours of ride time and by the grace of god!! I am hoping to use your video to remove the cover and find them at the bottom of the engine.
That's a tough one, If you have had the bike for some time, and rode it, any length of time than the nut and screw must have been in place and working, otherwise the bike would not run. The way the top cover kind of seals off the cam chain area, I don't think they both would fall to the bottom. I bet they are in the recess of the head to the left of the cam sprocket (facing the left side of the engine). I really hope that's where they are, otherwise you could be looking at a major tear down to find them. I would pull the engine ( takes about 15 minutes first time) pull the top cap, cam and look in and around the valve springs, if not there, then pull the left side (cam side ) flywheel cover and flywheel, and hope its there, drain the oil. good luck
@@scottbrunet8399 yes/no the bolts should be tight but I have seen some kits come with springs that are too long, and they bind when the bolts are tight. when the bolts are tight the spring should still have space between each winding, if they are touching the springs are too long.
I'm pretty sure that's the reason. Bought a heavy duty kit off of ebay. I might reinstall the old springs and give it a shot. Thanks for the advice. As always great videos, keep it up.
I know this is an older video on the one way clutch bearing, but now I'm experiencing Deja vu LOL! working on an '87 250 Big Red and having a problem with engine kick back or back lash to the starter gears making a pretty good clunk after shutting off the machine. So I figured I would change out the one way clutch bearing as described in this video, knowing after my own experience, that if the Kick start doesn't turn the engine over and free wheels, that the one way clutch bearing is put in backwards, so I installed an OEM Honda one way clutch bearing so that the kick start works, and then reassembled everything, hoping this would solve the problem, but it didn't, so now I'm going to change out the (Alternator) starter side one way clutch bearing, and hopefully this does the trick. I'm starting to get a little aggravated because from my understanding that others have told me, that if the I had this starter kick back condition, that it was the on the centrifugal clutch side. The funny thing is, my starter works great to crank it up, and with the starter gear cover and gears removed, I have tested the flywheel with a large screw driver on the teeth and get a fair amount of resistance from it going one way, thinking that it's good, but is it possible for this to happen and still get engine kick Back? Maybe the one way clutch is wore just enough for this to happen?
Hi CJ, I think your on the right path the centrifical 1 way does a lot of jobs, but the stator side 1 way disengagues the starter reduction gearset. Those gears are known to wear out, inspect them while your in there. As a test take the starter out and kick it to start it and see if the noise changes or goes away. If it does then id say tour 100% correct in you diagnoses.
@@Mrcbuilds Yessir, I kick started it just fine, that part works great. I inspected the starter gears and they look good with minimal wear, even the flywheel gear looks good. I just ordered a new one way clutch for the flywheel side (Alternator), hopefully that changing out it will cure the problem. Lol! Thank You for the advice, I'll let you know my results 👍
@@Mrcbuilds I Finally got it fixed, It was the One way Clutch on the flywheel side. I would have never known it, if I didn't have the New part to compare to the old part. As soon as I got the flywheel off I went to compare and it was a dead give away, the old clutch was loose enough it just fell out. In comparison, the new one would not turn and was tight. Another thing was the flywheel with the old one way clutch would let it spin free, with the new one it would spin free but had a good amount of resistance. The tell of tale was when I got it all back together and fired it up, then shut it off, NO more Kick Back on the starter gears, THANK YOU! HA ha !! LOL! It was a learning experience for sure. This was my first ATC engine ever, to go this far in depth, from splitting the case, replacing the piston rod and crank pin assembly, and reassembling everything myself. I've got experience rebuilding diesel engines on heavy equipment, and gas engines, some transmissions, Rebuilding Lincoln welders, Tractors etc., but this really threw me a curve ball for sure.
Thank you for the kind words Evan, I appreciate it. Welcome to the channel
Do you mind if I ask where your locate?
Sir, you are by far the best teacher I've ever experienced. I will follow and share your page to all my atc friends.
Wow, thanks Brian, I really do appreciate everyone's support. Thanks
Thanks for the kind words, I'm happy to help.

@@Mrcbuilds Hey, thanks so much for the quick reply. I’ll use the springs on my 85 250 es Big Red.
Love you're videos 👍
I have a 85 big red and and 84 200 and a 84 70 with a 125 cc
Sure you could install a couple studs. For that matter you could leave them in and put a nut on them, like the exhaust. I have never used that type of sealant. Sounds like a nice collection, the 84 atc200, is a nice bike, and you dont see them as often as 185s or 200s . Thanks for watching, I'm glad you enjoy the channel
That bike looks mint!
lol, its far from mint, but it is a nice bike for sure, thanks for watching.
The spinning clunk is the 1 way bearing. Shindy make one, you can find it on ebay. I would replace the clutch pack disc and steels while yout there.
Thanks for watching.
great video. thank you. please make more and more
Thanks, will do!
Great job and video, I have a 250sx that has that engine on it and every time I push the shifter down it hangs and I have to pull it back up with my foot, where is the return spring on that shifter at.

Thanks.
I would change the clutch and oil, and hope the gear set is ok in the trans.
No worries, Take your time, watch the videos and download the service manual, you will be fine.

@@thomasstaffier2520 At least you found the problem, let me know how it works out.

I plan on doing this on my 200es soon, do I need to use proper torque specs or snug good enough?

I put new clutch and one way bearing in my 1986 big red, all of the gears work except reverse. What did I screw up on, would appreciate any advice you could send my way. Thanks Mrcbuilds.
More than likely you do not have the reverse lever installed properly. it is a wedge fit on the shaft. loosen and rotate it counter clockwise to allow for more pull of the cable, or you may just need to add more tension to the cable itself.
How about a decompresion cable video and the use of it
Thank you for your videos
That's a good idea, Thanks David, I will work that into the 350x video.
@@Mrcbuilds from what I explained does it sound like the centrifugal clutches out?
@@rjlittlefield9209 yes the centrifugal clutch is the first or slow speed clutch, the the secondary or clutch plates kick in at higher rpms, not taking off is the centrifugal clutch slipping.

@stevedolby7880 loosen the 14mm jam nut and back the flat headed bolt out. Then install nrw clutch. The retighten the bolt and lock down the jam nut.
Have you made a video on the cold start issue yet mine refuses to start in these cold temperatures warm out 2nd kick...
I have not, the 86 carb addressed this problem. I really suggest a 300ex carb for these. The 300ex carb has a squirter that helps on cold start issues. I also reccomend 223cycles.net to purchase a worked honda carb.
Trying to replace the one way bearing and I go to remove the nut but everything keeps spinning, i see in the manual you need a clutch holder is there a way to do it without the exact holder?
use a rag and your hand (carefull) one of those rubber strap wrench will work too.
So I'm having an issue putting the case back together, pretty much having trouble getting the reverse actuator spring where it needs to be. Any advice? Thanks
Theres a little shelf in the bottom of the case, rest the arl of the spring on it like I show in the video. Make sure the crank is going into the whole squarely and it will slide on.

hey mrc builds i have 1985 250sx the drive shaft is bad does any of the other models interchange ?

Hi Rob, sure could be the centrifugal, also what type of oil did you put in it? regular or syn. motor oil will cause slipping, you need a specific Diesel oil or an ATV oil both will work in out ATC w/ wet clutches.

What clutch kit did you use for this?
That clutch kit if i remember was from the clutch factory. The one way bearing was from shindy.
I have a question about installing a flywheel and how do I know it's on all the way?

Something to check:
With the carb off- see if the butterfly/throttle plate moves at the same time the slide moves. They kinda get tweaked after awhile & wont move together-(at the same time....
i have one more ? i just got this 1985 250 sx when i shift it into gear it hesitates then lunges forward in first then then not as bad after its moving any idea what it may be
There is a clutch adjustment on the right side of the case. Download the free manual and follow the steps to adjust it. Is the idle set to high? If so it can lunge and creep once in gear.
@@Mrcbuilds will do thanks again
@@Mrcbuilds i found out it wasnt the clutch the bearing on the left side of the swingarm was totally gone lol i still have to get that crazy notched bolt out im hoping all the gears havent been damaged in the rear drive i had just bought it from a guy that said he couldnt get it running the air box had a rats nest in it and there was rat hair clogging the carb lol took it out cleaned it up and it fired right up
Awesome thanks man
Any time!

Is there anyway I could get a part number and where you are getting your parts from. I want to make sure I get the right parts.
@@dv7910 correct, no gasket there. Just a light film of hondabond
@@Mrcbuilds Thanks sir! You've helped save a life
where did you get the clutch springs
Check out the description in my videos, I get them from Amazon (link in description) made by versch, they are a nice upgrade. Thanks for watching
@@Mrcbuilds ok thanks, love the videos
@@Mrcbuilds Wow! Thank you for the quick reply. 50 year old guy playing with his new toy. Can’t get much happier than that!
@@MikeyB_1972 Your welcome, yes, a lot of us are reliving our childhood @50
My kickstart engages intermittently. Is that a symptom of a bad one-way bearing?
Yes it can be
When I use the kickstart on my eighty Five, Honda three, Wheeler 250ES.
@@Mrcbuilds I have 2 200es 1984 and 2 250 es 1985 1986 they are Daley riders I can't be three, will bill with 4 wheelers?
@@Mrcbuilds And thank you for helping me.
I would pull the engine ( takes about 15 minutes first time) pull the top cap, cam and look in and around the valve springs, if not there, then pull the left side (cam side ) flywheel cover and flywheel, and hope its there, drain the oil. good luck
Will do and Thanks again.
Anytime
Installed a new clutch in my 250sx, but now it doesn't disengage. When I hold the shift lever all the way up the bike still accelerates. Any advice?
@@scottbrunet8399 pull the right side cover. Sounds like the clutch arm is not aligned or you clutch pack is not installed correctly,
Thanks for the reply. Is it possible to have the clutch bolts too tight? I think the springs may be bound up too much.
Great informative video
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching and subscribing
Goes to show older dogs can always learn new tricks. BTW, I hope you and your family are safe from this Hurricane that's coming. As always Thank You for the reply's and info you spread out to everyone.

I was wondering if you could give me help with my 250se 3 wheeler big red how change the reverse cable and foot brake cable in that all u fb message
Hey jason, best bet is down load the manual and study the routing of each cable. It's really straight forward loosen the jam not and each end and then pull the slack out remove one end then pull the slack out and remove the other.

My 1985 250sx seems to need a puller to get the centrifugal clutch off...
Should be the same as the 250es.
You will need the 4 prong socket
