WAIT Wait just one minute What's that behind you....on the book shelf.... ....are we taking advice from a "Twilight" fan?! Kidding. Anyway, you give good writing advice. Thanks for sharing!
My favorite book I enjoyed reading and couldn't put down is Sacajawea, cause it is a story about someone's life and, I could kind of relate to. Your manuscript is a packed with pages, good luck with the end result.
All great advice! I think every reader loves that feeling of being "swept away." One thing that makes it difficult to figure out how to do this as a writer is that that feeling is SO SUBJECTIVE. Example: I just read The Casual Vacancy. I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN. But I have heard other people describe it as "boring," "couldn't get into it." Now I'm reading another book that others have raved about and I can't get into it. You'll never create that "immersion" experience for every reader, alas...
I'M NOT ALONE! :D Many manymanymany times when I find THAT book I completely block out everything, and YES I'm left numb and tingly and feeling like my world just got flipped upside down because of a couple hundred pages of ink. It takes me days to realize 'Oh, this is reality...' You're amazing, inspiring, motivating. ^.^ You're just awesome and thank you for being that way ♥
Love these thoughts! I must admit I've been "Breaking the Law" lately! I've been writing notes in my books, when I come across something I like or don't like! Reading as a writer definitely makes a difference!
The Hollow Kingdom series. Everything you describe in your video... I just came to the conclusion that you were talking about this series because it is so FREAKING amazing and original and... Yah.
Honestly, my favorite book is The Suffering by Rin Chupeco. Not only is she an amazing author but her storyline captivating. She's got characters that jump off the page and she's got a world that you feel as if you're living in. I just love it. Secondly, I love all things V. C. Andrews.
Sometimes when I feel like I'm just completely engrossed in my story, it's like this awesome escape from reality and I can hear the voices of and see my characters interacting in my head. It is really cool! For me all it takes is to get the ball rolling and from there my characters pretty much tell the story themselves. :] I like to think of them as friends telling me their life story every day. There are so many people in my head. :D LOL
One thing that I've found helpful with writing descriptions and getting good at it was writing a short story from the point of view of a blind person. You're forced to use other other descriptive words than just saying what is around the character. That and it was really fun to do.
You've formed a great argument, alas I believe with the publication of my novel, it could create the apocalypse itself! In due time, when creatures begin rising from the dead, I will use my other novels (that are related to politics and leadership) to influence people and place me in power. Once in power, I shall lead the world to safety and save the humankind. I've contemplated on every possible scenario, my dear. Don't worry, the world is in safe hands.
The first part of this video was really magical! I was so...IMMERSED! Whenever I see a new video from you I go CRAZY with comments! Then TH-cam is like wtf and gives me a captcha cause I posted too much in a row. Going to post the silly captchas because of reasons. Captcha: papseacion
Not sure if this exactly fits with what you're talking about, but my advisor at school just gave me an interesting exercise to try. I said I liked the voice in one book and it felt similar to the one I was creating in my novel. And she told me to actually type out passages from the book to see what it looks like on my computer screen. Haven't tried it yet, but I'm going to. I always wonder what my manuscript would look like as a printed book, so I think this might be helpful. Thought I'd share!
Great advice. I am trying my best. It's a bit overwhelming to have a draft. Like where do I start? Damn, the whole thing needs work. Every bit needs work. I was trying to build a palace, but all I've managed is a crooked broke-down shack. Now I need to learn carpentry? Drywalling? Don't even talk to me about plumbing and electric!
*Starts making a very long list for the Black Jewels Trilogy - the scroll goes on for miles...* I love page-turners, too. I love spending days and nights in a row just reading. Occasionally shifting to a different position or hunting for food, but mostly reading. Screaming "DON'T BOTHER ME, I AM READING!" but then when you finish the novel you crawl and writhe on the floor in tears and clutch on to the legs of the person you just screamed at and beg them to wallow in...
:) i agree with everything that you say except that yes! i write on my books not all of them though...and that's okay they're my books hehe... fun and informative video *thumbs up!!!
At least I have already been a little swept away by my own writing a little bit - atleast during NaNo. There were definitely times when I lost myself in my own writing/world and forgot about everything else. Up for a Favorite Books Book Club with me? We could read Daughter of Smoke and Bone together and Black Jewels together and each fall in love with each other's favorite books! ? And study them for helpful writing inspiration.
i'm writing a novel based on a scottish folklore with illustrations and it means a lot to me so do you have any advice on how to continue the story till the end
I recently finished a book that I couldn't put down and I still can't stop thinking about it. Its called The Cross Gardener by Jason F. Wright. I really recommend it if you haven't already read it.
I am glad you like reading them, because as long as you make videos, they will never stop!!! Oh man, you are so right - it does sound like an invasive medical procedure, like on Prometheus when *SPOILER* Noomi Rapace gives herself an abortion! Have you seen that movie? The captcha also kind of sounds like a dog breed. I am thinking a stuck up little French dog with huge ears and a tiny body - a majestic pouf on the top of the head.
Still thinking about Harry Potter. Still thinking about Black Jewels. Still thinking about Little Dorrit. They never leave my side. Those characters are always with me. Seems like such a daunting task to write like that! Even if I came close to making a story that was that immersive and lovely to read (for myself) how would I ever make someone else feel that same way about my own writing? Are there really people out there that could be as interested and as invested in my creations as I am?
I area, there's no way I'd ever hart my books and especially not the only 2 books that really effected me emotionally. Granted I only have one of them right now but hey I know what I'm asking for for my B day this fall. :)
I agree with the don't mark books thing. DON'T HURT THE PAGE! PLEASE! NO DOG-EARS! NO HIGHLIGHTING! NO PEN MARKS ON THE PRECIOUS WORDS! My precious....lol
My zombie novel is so immersive, so great, so indulging, so captivating that I'm not going to publish it because the world is not ready for it. I can't explain it!
ok so there is this book i am very adicted to i have read it 5 times this month i think. Its Spellbound by Cara Lynn Shlutz you should really read it. Its supernatural and romantic its really good. PLEASE LOOK INTO IT KAT?!
Is it weird that im a dude and im totally into these videos? I mean just looking at the comments about 80% (or so) are girls... Is it weird that im into this?
No, of course not! If you enjoy writing and want to improve, what on earth is the relevance of gender? It's not 1890 any more. It's not even 1980! Forget "Girls do 'x', and boys do 'y'." People do things. I've had a couple of women flying instructors, and taught a couple of men to make jewellery, and the other way about. Take the good stuff from whoever is willing to teach you!
Wow, you know yesterday I was looking for help about writing for motivation and found this. Your voice annoyed me so much it motivated me to get off the internet and start writing seriously! XD That's not to be mean, and you don't really have an annoying voice. This is great advice too, however I made the mistake of trying to write while listening to this at the same time. I actually do that a lot with TH-cam videos. XD This response might sound weird but thanks I got some decent work done. :3
self-pity with you over that character-death or that last beautiful line. You don't understand how the world can keep on turning and how people can go on living their lives when IT'S ALL OVER and what now? And what do I do? How the crap am I ever going to find a book or a series that makes me feel this way and utterly completes me, but leaves me so empty at the same time!?
It is pretty good and scary and interesting. HONEY, I THINK WE HAVE ALL FIGURED OUT BY NOW THAT CAITLIN IS QUEEN OF IMPATIENCE! DON'T EVEN TRY! *Brings on the comments!* Another captcha: bilubdo = Bilbo dubstep?
I dont think u said u guys :( But anyway sometimes its not cause u love the book its stuck in ur head sometimes its cause the author did something completley crazy and writ the story wrong
I agree! Don't write in Books! I borrowed Stephen King's 'On Writing' for the third time the other day, and some enthusiastic person had penned their way through a third of it. Lol! '...let the story percolate in our little brain. Or our big brains! Their just BRAINS!' Giggle, heheheh!
Hi, Kate. Check your Nanowrimo email. I just send you a great short film I just finished. I entered in Sundance Film Festival. I hope it gets selected. Enjoy it and tell me what you think. Take care and hope to hear from you soon.

Oh my Gosh! This video is awesome! I love your advice because i struggle keeping up with my novel ideas so i'm definitely going to use this.

Ready Player One is my number one book in the world for all those reasons and I want my work to have that same effect. Great video :-)
My favoritest book is right behind you, Meridiain by amber kizer!

You should read Writing the Breakout Novel! It's amazing and tells you why readers like a book and how to apply it to your own writing :)
This was really inspiring. Thank you. I'm going to go work.

Right now, my favorite book is probably 'Where the Red Fern Grows' by Wilson Rawls.
I can see you becoming very successful! Where can I read some of your work?! :)
I think, for me, the book that I can't put down is the Chaos Walking series or at least the first 2 books, I haven't read the last one yet.
You should read The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns! They're amazing books
I am glad you like reading them, because as long as you make videos, they will never stop!!! When she said favorite book I immediately thought going bovine. ...Its in the background, right next to her head... high five, just high five

A wonderful book to read if you want to read your favorite book like Katy says? Reading Like a Writer by Francine Prose. Really in depth.
I don't know if you did, but you should read The Summer I Turned Pretty Trilogy.
I love when my mind goes numb from reading.
Awesome chic!
