Thanks to this movie the actor who played Lt Dan has become very involved with the Wounded Warrior program to help vets who come home from their service injured; physically or with PTSD. He has (had?) a band that would tour to perform for military personnel and continues to try and raise awareness about the importance of having the project.
What makes the „Is he smart“ scene even more heartbraking is the realisation that Forrest Gump was self aware of his condition. Rewatch the entire movie with that in mind. Marvellous acting from Tom Hanks.
What I love about this movie is that most movies is that most movies follow the character arc of the protagonist. Forrest doesn't have an arc, he is the same throughout the movie. The movie is about the arcs of the characters around Forrest, particularly Jenny and Lt. Dan.
The scene where Forrest finds out that he's a dad is an absolute master class in acting from Tom Hanks. He says SO much with so few words. Powerful stuff. Also, with your frustration of Jenny supposedly not letting Forrest know sooner about his son, keep in mind that he was out running for over three years, and this was long before the advent of cell phones. The only way she had to let him know was sending a letter, which she did, and waiting for him to get home and read it. Great reactions to this iconic film! P.S. One of the best movie soundtracks EVER!!
Forrest Jr. is roughly three years old when he meets his dad. The reason Jenny took so long to tell Forrest is because Forrest was running through the country and she had no way of contacting him. I love how you guys understand Jenny and not write her off as some villain as others do.
Jenny is a much more complex character than most people give her credit for. She goes through a lot of rough times in her life and it affects her the same way it would a real person and not just a character that is there to be a love interest. They actually managed to give her an arc!
There was originally a sequel planned that would have been about the life of Forrest Jr, specifically taking care of his aging mentally handicapped father and dealing with having hereditary HIV.
I'm so glad you guys seemed to understand Jenny. A lot of reactors don't and some even get angry and believing she tormented Forrest or that she didn't deserve him. It's obvious some people don't understand how trauma, especially childhood trauma can really affect your whole life going forward. That was the cause of all her bad decisions, poor choice in men and her need to feel like she had to protect Forrest from herself. That's why she always pushed him away. It wasn't that she didn't love him, she didn't think she deserved to be loved BY him. I'm glad you guys seemed to understand her more than most, and that while she certainly hurt Forrest.... it was never malicious. It just took her a long time to find and center herself to the point that she could see clearly enough to know Forrest was her soul mate.
Yesss, this!!! Comments like these are wonderful to read, because it shows the wholesome and insightful people that are oit there! Yes, Jenny hurt Forrest - but it's not as cut and dry as she didn't deserve him, or she was intentionally cruel. She had so much to unpack within herself, and like you said, childhood trauma shapes our relationships, our perception of self, others, relationships. There is a very skewed view that gets imprinted on you when you have childhood trauma, and that HAS to be acknowledged in order to understand Jenny!
Yes I was in a coma for four days when I came out I went to therapy and I learned in therapy that a person who is raped woman man doesn’t matter it doesn’t leave them right away and people will come up and say them just get over it well you can’t just get over it that’s why women go to a group of other people that have been raped and discuss it with him because a person that has been through that experience doesn’t understand the trauma that affects your life
You do realize we are in the 21st century and someone's worth, in this case referring to your comment, a woman's worth is not determined by how many people they sleep with. People process trauma very differently - some engage in self-destructive behavior, like Jenny. In this case I'm referring not to how many men she slept with, but the cycle of abuse she was stuck in. She was with men who abused her and actually did treat her like she was worthless. That is a much more important topic that should be discussed rather than someone's perceived promiscuity. Hope this clarifies things.

As a child sexual abuse survivor I am all too familiar with Jenny's story and understand it all too well, especially the inevitable downward spiral of self destruction and self loathing. I believe she did always love Forrest, it's just, shed forgotten how to love herself. When you think about it, she was just doing what she had told Forrest to do all their lives, when you're in trouble or can't cope with a situation, don't try to be brave, just run.. and so she did.
First of all, we are so deeply sorry for what you had to go through. Also, we know how difficult it is to speak about this, so we appreciate you opening up this way. I absolutely agree that she did always love Forrest. Trauma, especially child SA, is a beast to overcome. It molds our perception of self and others. Jenny had to overcome mountains so she could live a good life, a life she always deserved. Your analysis is spot-on. She was merely trying to survive- it was her coping mechanism and when it's this kind of trauma, it needs to be handled with great understanding and care - every survivor will handle it differently. We wish you a lot of strength, peace and bliss. Be well!

I echo what everyone else has said to you, *and* that's a GREAT point you made, about her telling Forrest to "Run Forrest, Run!!" being a projection of her own coping method... she did not fight back against her father, because as a little girl, she couldn't, so in order to survive she just ran... literally, or figuratively. That running could include retreating into places within herself, disconnecting from her feelings, hiding in a cornfield, retreating into drugs/alcohol/sex, getting involved with political causes, physically moving from place to place, or any combination of those. I'm pretty sure you know this already... but thanks for your insightful comment, I hadn't connected those things (and I don't miss much 😎). I'm sorry for whatever you went through, also... good job sharing. 🙏❤🩹🌤
You have the perfect interpretation of Jenny. She just is so damaged, she doesnt want to bring Forrest down, and doesnt know or feel she deserves love.
Thank you so much for watching this with us. Most people that are empathetic are able to perceive the real issue with Jenny. It’s a shame so many jump right into judging. Not saying she’s perfect by any means but there’s a whole lot more to the story.
Sure, there’s more to Jenny’s story, and her tragic past does deserve empathy. But let’s not act like that means she’s above judgment. Understanding her struggles doesn't mean we have to ignore her behavior. It’s easy to sympathize with her when you look at the surface, but the reality is that she used Forrest as an emotional crutch while running headlong into disaster after disaster. Her history is a factor, but it doesn’t exempt her from accountability. Empathy shouldn’t mean we gloss over the fact that she consistently hurt the one person who genuinely loved her. So while it’s nice to peel back the layers of her story, let’s not forget that some layers are just plain selfishness wrapped in a tragic bow.
I loved your reaction! I watch a lot of Forrest Gump reactions, and a surprising number of reactors don't 'get' the references -- they don't pick up on the Imagine lyrics or even know who John Lennon is (eye roll), they don't know what Watergate is, etc. It is gratifying to watch reactors who catch all the references, as without that a lot of the magic of the movie is lost. Kudos!
This is an 'all-timer' for me. It's great to watch people enjoy it for the first time. And fyi, all the "Alabama" scenes were filmed in my great home state of South Carolina. Even the Vietnam scenes as well. Great job to you both, and thank you.
I remember seeing a poster for this in the cinema. Just him sitting on a bench. Didn't watch any trailer for it. Thought what is Tom Hanks doing making a film like this? Finally went to watch it and was blown away. Came out thinking I shouldn't judge a movie just by it's poster. Amazing movie ❤️

Hey I just watched an interview on this film a few days ago, while they were trying to work on Forrest's mannerisms, the director was trying to teach the kid playing Forrest how to talk like Tom Hank, but Tom caught this happening, had a quick conversation with him, and decided to talk like the kid. The rest is history.
I agree. It also shows a lot of compassion on Hanks' part for the child actor, who might have been struggling with having to change his voice *on top of learning the written part, physically acting, and dealing with personalities/other aspects of the music business on the set*. Hanks let him focus more on those other things, by taking the responsibility for learning an accent upon himself. What a great story!! It would be interesting to interview the child actor and see if he remembers that, also. LOVE your channel guys!! (Especially the genuine empathy, without phoniness). I love you guys and the beautiful work that you do…both of you are so precious and genuine in your reactions. Forest Gump besides the soundtrack is some of my favorite cinema. This is one the most original stories ever made, and Tom Hanks and Robin Wright’s performance were nothing short of outstanding. Just to answer your question about why Forrest didn’t know about his son. REMEMBER he ran literally right after Jenny left him, he ran for 3 years and a couple of months. Also, jenny sent him a letter that he just got when he came back from running. Which means she could have sent him that 2-3 years ago when she found out she was pregnant. As we saw in the movie, she also had a lot to go through while she was away from Forrest too. Motherhood also changes your perspective in life and I think in Jenny’s case it changed her for the better. Having a child, let alone the father being someone who truly cares and loves you..is life changing too. Jenny has to learn to let go of her past pain/hurt/anger. She has to allow herself to not only love herself, but allow those to truly love her. I really feel that she ran away from real intimacy/real feelings because she felt she didn’t deserve it. Compared to how Forrest was brought out, Jenny had it worse tbh. She felt worthless and she was treated like she was by her abusive father. She didn’t want to taint Forrest because he’s just so pure hearted guy.
Because she have a virus and she know she going to die. She needs some idiot to take take care of her kid. And most importantly Forrest is not biological father of jr Forrest.
It's easy to diregard that he was running away for so long. Jenny was left in the the position Forrest had been for so long, unable to reach him. I don't think there was anything malicious her failing to tell him sooner.
You are very right on that one!! We didn't react in the way that we thought she was malicious, but more as a sense of grief of all the years Forrest missed out on with his son, and also vice versa! It's a tragic situation all around, but at least they did get to spend some time together in the end!
It's odd. Every single reactor I've seen seems to miss the fact that the kid looks like he's maybe about 3-4 years old and Forrest had been running for the last 3+ years. Can't send a letter, and cell phones weren't a thing yet so she would have had to actually go try to track him down to talk to him. Even if she knew exactly where he was from the news reports she's a single working mother, so just taking off to go across the country to find him most likely wouldn't really be an option for her either.

She WAS running. She had to learn to love herself, and since she couldn't, she ran away from people who loved her, and ran towards people who used her (as her father had). Then (in a sense), she "ran" back to Forrest when she got cleaned up, learned to love herself, and wanted him to meet his son (and be part of their lives). @@flarrfan
I have been enjoying your reactions and finally making a comment. This movie literally changed my life. I was alone in Atlanta in my late 20’s and read a great review so I decided to see it. Actually, I kept going back to see it again and again. I wanted to feel like Forest. He just went with the punches of life circumstances. So innocent yet wiser than any character in the movie. I learned to realize that my life was not the end all, but a beginning with so many challenges ahead. You two are the best. Subscribed. You are so genuine, intelligent and enjoyable to watch. "Fortunate Son" was was released during the time of all the Viet Nam war protests like many other protest songs and obviously the troops were listening and relating to it. Anyone around during that era associates the song with the war.
I do love that you empathized with Jenny. Too many viewers judge her way too harshly. She was abused for almost her entire life, so that’s what she thought she deserved. And so Jenny thought Forrest was too good for her & she kept avoiding him to keep from ruining his life. She loved Forrest so much that she didn’t want to inflict her pain on him. After he stopped running, she was finally able to contact him about his son & get married so that Forrest would get uncontested custody of their son after her death.
Jenny's sollution to any difficult situation was to "run". This is how she got away from her dad, this is what she told Forrest to do and this was repeated anytime she found herself in a situation she was uncomfortable in.
“Is he like me, or…is he…” is where I started openly sobbing in the theatre in case you were wondering. Gut wrenching. Such a great movie and loved your reaction.
What makes Forrest Gump so good is that the whole movie is just a picture of how life works. The movie is in a constant travel between funny, sweet scenes and sad ones. Just like life is. At the end of the journey, everything that is left...is the journey itself.
Yeah the ups and downs mean more when they are both present. Some fiction that is just sad from start to finish just sucks. I like how Forrest has money but he's happy as a clam just mowing the grass, fishing, and playing ping pong plus he has a simple little wedding and he's charitable not materialistic.

The incomparable Tom Hanks! This performance earned him is second Oscar. Spencer Tracey and Tom Hanks are the only men to win back-to-back Best Actor Oscars. If you don't want to cry, please don't watch the film that earned him his first Oscar, Philidelphia. I cried for a solid hour after it was over. Great reaction!!
10/10 In my opinion, no film has touched me more than this one..... Quite simply, the greatest film ever made. Humour, sadness, action, drama and a Vietnam film all rolled into one. I'm not a stone cold, heartless villain, but it takes a lot to make me cry when I watch a movie. Bambi's mother, I couldn't care less. Jimmy Stewart in, "Oh, what a wonderful life," - yeah right! The Lion King, when Mufasa bites the big one - on the verge. But seriously - I bawled my big brown eyes out, on several occasions in this film. A real tear-jerker, and a wonderful character, played to perfection by Tom Hanks. Every bit as worthy for the Oscar as Rooney was to win the Premiership in 2007. I cannot say it enough: This is THE film of all time. Watch it, and you'll see.
Speaks volumes when a film can tug on your heartstrings the way this one does. There is so much truth in this film and we all feel for Forrest and the rest of the characters in this movie. This is the second film with Tom Hanks that absolutely destroyed us. The Green Mile was the first one. Such an amazing actor.
Dan didn’t just defend Forrest, he literally stood up for him, forgetting he doesn’t have legs and falling flat on his face. Dan was also the only one standing at the wedding.
The feather is a beautiful metaphor, of how most of Forrests life was him being taken where the wind blew him. At 50, having gone through loss and illness and finally a loving family, this film keeps hitting hard. Funny that Bob Zemeckis has two of the most perfect films ever made, Back to the Future being the other.

Growing up in the 80’s, 90’s, and early 2000’s… Tom Hanks was on a f**kin TEAR! Seriously, that man couldn’t make a bad movie or put out a bad performance if his life depended on it. I got to see him perform Shakespeare live in a small, intimate setting and it was a dream come true. He was why I became an actor. And I used to be in sales and I had Robin Wright as a client. I gave her my personal discount and when she asked why I told her “Because you’re Jenny and I have to.” She smiled big, laughed, and thanked me a hundred times. The performances are also VERY good, but I think my personal favorite is actually Gary Sinise as Lt. Dan! For me Personally, I often find myself connecting with this movie because my brother has Autism (So Forrest and my brother can relate a bit since they are both disabled). I also just wanted to mention that I actually posted a video on my TH-cam channel that is almost like a tribute video to Forrest Gump (though I called it a Mashup). You see, there's a band named Family Of The Year, and they used their hit song "Hero" for Richard Linklater's 2014 movie called Boyhood. Interesting bit of trivia: At 33:03 the shot of Forrest with a beard running is not Tom Hanks but rather his brother who looks a lot like him (he has no acting talent) He did all of the jogging scenes of Forrest with a beard. Only closeups of him when he is talking is it Tom Hanks. During an interview on location in the desert he was asked if it was difficult to imitate his famous brother. He replied, "No, it's easy. You just stick your butt out and run like a dork"

When it comes to Jenny not telling Forrest about his son, I think it helps that Forrest was literally running for three years (and there weren’t cellphones back then.)

First saw it in 1994, never stopped loving this film. Brilliant casting, brilliant soundtrack, brilliant story! 29 years and I still cry at certain scenes! A truly timeless masterpiece!

My mom looked exactly like Sally Field when we were kids and convinced she had a secret movie career, sincerely cried when she died. And that's all I have to say about that. Tom Hanks is absolutely brilliant, even when playing a local idiot. When LT. Dan comes with his magic legs made from the same as the space shuttle...the next year they were in Apollo 13th together.

This is a masterpiece period. Casting was perfect, soundtrack fantastic & script amazing. To tie Forrests' life with so many historical events was genius! Now, in hopes you read this i have a request; watch the miniseries "Band of Brothers" a true story of a group of men during WWII. As good as y'all are, it would becan epic reaction!
I like that from his childhood to adulthood Forrest had so many amazing adventures and became so wildly successful but they anchored it at the end. He had such a tumultuous life, but like most people Dorothy Harris just kept on driving those kids to school.
Vietnam was the first Helicopter war and forever defined by the Huey H1 airborne cavalry. See “We Were Soldiers” about the earliest days of our involvement in Vietnam circa 1963-64 when it was a small conflict.
Man, Tom Hank will bring it out of you. I've seen this movie so many times...watched it religiously as a kid and I still cry every time. Cast Away, Saving Private Ryan and yes, Green Mile are all tear jerkers. LOL
I believe this was his second Oscar-winning performance. If you wanna check his first (also a tear jerker, you’ve been warned) you should watch “Philadelphia”. Hardly anyone reacts to that one.

This movie has probably the best soundtrack of all time, it truly is amazing and suit this movie. It really is hilarious that CCR and helicopters go so well together.
Something to realize is that in the time frame when Forrest was running there were no cell phones. No internet. Even if Jenny had written him when the baby was born he wouldn’t have got home to get the letter for a little over 2 years. But then not only did she know little Forrest deserved to know his dad but Jenny learned that she did deserve the love of such an incredible person and finally let herself experience that if only for the short time left of her life.
Did you guys think about the feather's meaning? A metaphor for Jenny's spirit flying far, far away but checking up on her 2 loves. I think that's what it represents anyway.🤔👍
That's actually a beautiful take, definitely love it! For us, it felt like a representation of the question that was always being asked about life and if there was such a thing as destiny or if we're all just floating around in the wind. Yours sounds better though!

When it comes to Jenny, people always tend to forget that she was SAd as a child. Trust me, that tears you up as an adult. She was broken. And she knew it. She wanted to be better, but had no idea how to do it.

Mirroring the movie, Michael Conner Humphreys, the kid that played young Forrest, joined the military too. After high school, much like his movie character, Humphreys joined the army. He served for seven years. In interviews he said that working on Forrest Gump played a part in him joining the military.

Tom Hanks is an incredible actor, he basically makes me forget he is even Tom Hanks in this film and makes me believe Forrest Gump is a real, living and breathing person. When he says "Is he smart of is he......" Its insane how well acted that is...the emotion in his face is on another level...always brings tears to my eyes when I see that scene.
It amazes me how many people seeing this movie DO NOT understand the Jenny character. She was sexually abused by her father & as is true of many who suffer that early on...they are really screwed up as adults. Notice how Jenny seems to repeatedly fall into destructive relationships? Forrest is her one pure lifelong friend, but she resists being with him because she knows she is too screwed up & isn't "good enough" for him.
This movie struck a particularly perfect balance where kids (like me) loved it too. Of course all of the adult stuff flew right over our heads. But Forrest was so likable and quotable. We were quoting this movie all the time.
When I first saw this when I was younger - I really didn’t like Jenny’s character - As I’ve gotten older I feel nothing but sadness for her. She pushed away all those who tried to care for her and gravitated towards those who abused her as a result of her childhood.
This is by far one of my favorite, if not my #1, movie. I never used to get teary-eyed from watching this movie, until I had kids of my own. I have watched this movie anytime it's on TV and I get so chocked up every time now and I know the entire movie by heart.
One of the few reactors that somewhat understands Jenny's behavior. Forrest is too pure and Jenny doesn't want to taint that. Yes that's kind of the deal here. Jenny knows what an amazing person Forrest is, but at the same time Jenny doesn't think that she herself is a great person because of what she went through in her childhood and then everything else she has done during her adulthood. She doesn't think she is worthy of someone as good as Forrest, she thinks Forrest deserves better than her, better than she can give him, thus why she rebuffs him every time. Even at the end when she has finally gotten her life together, she still doesn't seek out Forrest for herself, she only does it for their child. In the end she didn't marry Forrest for herself, she did it for their child and for Forrest. Jenny was only ever happy when she was with Forrest, notice how nobody sat next to her on the bus either?
Hey rjh00! Forrest Gump and Jenny have very different paths in life, but I think that contrast is what makes this story so special! When I was younger, I did NOT understand how Jenny was also "running" but Not in the same way as Forrest. For me Personally, I often connect with this movie because my brother actually has Autism (So Forrest and my brother can relate a bit since they are both disabled). I also just wanted to mention that I actually posted a video on my TH-cam channel that is almost like a tribute video to Forrest Gump (though I called it a Mashup). You see, there's a band named Family Of The Year, and they used their hit song "Hero" for Richard Linklater's 2014 movie called Boyhood. So after watching your Alien reaction, I went directly into you Channel and Subscribed and immediately started going through your list of reactions and as soon as I saw this one, I stopped immediately and jumped straight in. Forrest Gump is my all-time favorite movie followed closely by The Shawshank Redemption. Born in the mid 70s and growing up in the 80s, a lot of historical information came to us through media so when this movie came out, I was 16 I believe, it was amazing to see how many events were woven into the story and life of Forrest but you get to "see the world" through the eyes of a innocent, As I grew older, and through my love of history, learning things that I didn't realize how important they were in the movie, such as the ping pong in China, really increased my joy and love for the movie. I am so glad that watched and reacted to this film and am looking forward to watching many more of your reactions. Thanks to this movie the actor who played Lt Dan has become very involved with the Wounded Warrior program to help vets who come home from their service injured; physically or with PTSD. He has (had?) a band that would tour to perform for military personnel and continues to try and raise awareness about the importance of having the project.

What I love about this movie is that most movies is that most movies follow the character arc of the protagonist. Forrest doesn't have an arc, he is the same throughout the movie. The movie is about the arcs of the characters around Forrest, particularly Jenny and Lt. Dan.
The scene where Forrest finds out that he's a dad is an absolute master class in acting from Tom Hanks. He says SO much with so few words. Powerful stuff.
Also, with your frustration of Jenny supposedly not letting Forrest know sooner about his son, keep in mind that he was out running for over three years, and this was long before the advent of cell phones. The only way she had to let him know was sending a letter, which she did, and waiting for him to get home and read it.

Forrest Jr. is roughly three years old when he meets his dad. The reason Jenny took so long to tell Forrest is because Forrest was running through the country and she had no way of contacting him.

Jenny is a much more complex character than most people give her credit for. She goes through a lot of rough times in her life and it affects her the same way it would a real person and not just a character that is there to be a love interest. They actually managed to give her an arc!
There was originally a sequel planned that would have been about the life of Forrest Jr, specifically taking care of his aging mentally handicapped father and dealing with having hereditary HIV.

I'm so glad you guys seemed to understand Jenny. A lot of reactors don't and some even get angry and believing she tormented Forrest or that she didn't deserve him. It's obvious some people don't understand how trauma, especially childhood trauma can really affect your whole life going forward. That was the cause of all her bad decisions, poor choice in men and her need to feel like she had to protect Forrest from herself. That's why she always pushed him away. It wasn't that she didn't love him, she didn't think she deserved to be loved BY him. I'm glad you guys seemed to understand her more than most, and that while she certainly hurt Forrest.... it was never malicious. It just took her a long time to find and center herself to the point that she could see clearly enough to know Forrest was her soul mate.

Yes, Jenny hurt Forrest - but it's not as cut and dry as she didn't deserve him, or she was intentionally cruel. She had so much to unpack within herself, and like you said, childhood trauma shapes our relationships, our perception of self, others, relationships. There is a very skewed view that gets imprinted on you when you have childhood trauma, and that HAS to be acknowledged in order to understand Jenny!
Yes I was in a coma for four days when I came out I went to therapy and I learned in therapy that a person who is raped woman man doesn’t matter it doesn’t leave them right away and people will come up and say them just get over it well you can’t just get over it that’s why women go to a group of other people that have been raped and discuss it with him because a person that has been through that experience doesn’t understand the trauma that affects your life

Nah, she played Forrest because she thought he was an idiot. She had sex with many men and when she was dirty and worthless she accepted him.
You do realize we are in the 21st century and someone's worth, in this case referring to your comment, a woman's worth is not determined by how many people they sleep with.
People process trauma very differently - some engage in self-destructive behavior, like Jenny. In this case I'm referring not to how many men she slept with, but the cycle of abuse she was stuck in. She was with men who abused her and actually did treat her like she was worthless. That is a much more important topic that should be discussed rather than someone's perceived promiscuity. Hope this clarifies things.

As a child sexual abuse survivor I am all too familiar with Jenny's story and understand it all too well, especially the inevitable downward spiral of self destruction and self loathing. I believe she did always love Forrest, it's just, shed forgotten how to love herself. When you think about it, she was just doing what she had told Forrest to do all their lives, when you're in trouble or can't cope with a situation, don't try to be brave, just run.. and so she did.
First of all, we are so deeply sorry for what you had to go through. Also, we know how difficult it is to speak about this, so we appreciate you opening up this way.
I absolutely agree that she did always love Forrest. Trauma, especially child SA, is a beast to overcome. It molds our perception of self and others. Jenny had to overcome mountains so she could live a good life, a life she always deserved.
Your analysis is spot-on. She was merely trying to survive- it was her coping mechanism and when it's this kind of trauma, it needs to be handled with great understanding and care - every survivor will handle it differently.

I echo what everyone else has said to you, *and* that's a GREAT point you made, about her telling Forrest to "Run Forrest, Run!!" being a projection of her own coping method... she did not fight back against her father, because as a little girl, she couldn't, so in order to survive she just ran... literally, or figuratively. That running could include retreating into places within herself, disconnecting from her feelings, hiding in a cornfield, retreating into drugs/alcohol/sex, getting involved with political causes, physically moving from place to place, or any combination of those. I'm pretty sure you know this already... but thanks for your insightful comment, I hadn't connected those things (and I don't miss much 😎). You have the perfect interpretation of Jenny. She just is so damaged, she doesnt want to bring Forrest down, and doesnt know or feel she deserves love.
Thank you so much for watching this with us. Most people that are empathetic are able to perceive the real issue with Jenny. It’s a shame so many jump right into judging. Not saying she’s perfect by any means but there’s a whole lot more to the story.
Sure, there’s more to Jenny’s story, and her tragic past does deserve empathy. But let’s not act like that means she’s above judgment. Understanding her struggles doesn't mean we have to ignore her behavior. It’s easy to sympathize with her when you look at the surface, but the reality is that she used Forrest as an emotional crutch while running headlong into disaster after disaster.
Her history is a factor, but it doesn’t exempt her from accountability. Empathy shouldn’t mean we gloss over the fact that she consistently hurt the one person who genuinely loved her. So while it’s nice to peel back the layers of her story, let’s not forget that some layers are just plain selfishness wrapped in a tragic bow.

I watch a lot of Forrest Gump reactions, and a surprising number of reactors don't 'get' the references -- they don't pick up on the Imagine lyrics or even know who John Lennon is (eye roll), they don't know what Watergate is, etc. It is gratifying to watch reactors who catch all the references, as without that a lot of the magic of the movie is lost. I remember seeing a poster for this in the cinema. Just him sitting on a bench. Didn't watch any trailer for it. Thought what is Tom Hanks doing making a film like this? Finally went to watch it and was blown away. Came out thinking I shouldn't judge a movie just by it's poster. Amazing movie ❤️

Hey I just watched an interview on this film a few days ago, while they were trying to work on Forrest's mannerisms, the director was trying to teach the kid playing Forrest how to talk like Tom Hank, but Tom caught this happening, had a quick conversation with him, and decided to talk like the kid. The rest is history.
Aw wooowwww that's amazing!!! Shows such a great level of understanding on Hanks' part to simply analyze the kid instead, and mimic him.
I agree. It also shows a lot of compassion on Hanks' part for the child actor, who might have been struggling with having to change his voice *on top of learning the written part, physically acting, and dealing with personalities/other aspects of the music business on the set*. Hanks let him focus more on those other things, by taking the responsibility for learning an accent upon himself. What a great story!! Just to answer your question about why Forrest didn’t know about his son. REMEMBER he ran literally right after Jenny left him, he ran for 3 years and a couple of months. Also, jenny sent him a letter that he just got when he came back from running. Which means she could have sent him that 2-3 years ago when she found out she was pregnant. As we saw in the movie, she also had a lot to go through while she was away from Forrest too. Motherhood also changes your perspective in life and I think in Jenny’s case it changed her for the better. Having a child, let alone the father being someone who truly cares and loves you..is life changing too. Jenny has to learn to let go of her past pain/hurt/anger. She has to allow herself to not only love herself, but allow those to truly love her. I really feel that she ran away from real intimacy/real feelings because she felt she didn’t deserve it. Compared to how Forrest was brought out, Jenny had it worse tbh. She felt worthless and she was treated like she was by her abusive father. She didn’t want to taint Forrest because he’s just so pure hearted guy.
This was a wonderfully empathetic analysis and it's always nice to see people trying to understand Jenny instead of judging her!

Because she have a virus and she know she going to die. She needs some idiot to take take care of her kid. And most importantly Forrest is not biological father of jr Forrest.
It's easy to diregard that he was running away for so long. Jenny was left in the the position Forrest had been for so long, unable to reach him. I don't think there was anything malicious her failing to tell him sooner.
You are very right on that one!! We didn't react in the way that we thought she was malicious, but more as a sense of grief of all the years Forrest missed out on with his son, and also vice versa! It's a tragic situation all around, but at least they did get to spend some time together in the end!
It's odd. Every single reactor I've seen seems to miss the fact that the kid looks like he's maybe about 3-4 years old and Forrest had been running for the last 3+ years. Can't send a letter, and cell phones weren't a thing yet so she would have had to actually go try to track him down to talk to him. Even if she knew exactly where he was from the news reports she's a single working mother, so just taking off to go across the country to find him most likely wouldn't really be an option for her either.

She WAS running. She had to learn to love herself, and since she couldn't, she ran away from people who loved her, and ran towards people who used her (as her father had). Then (in a sense), she "ran" back to Forrest when she got cleaned up, learned to love herself, and wanted him to meet his son (and be part of their lives). @@flarrfan

This movie literally changed my life. I was alone in Atlanta in my late 20’s and read a great review so I decided to see it. Actually, I kept going back to see it again and again. I wanted to feel like Forest. He just went with the punches of life circumstances. So innocent yet wiser than any character in the movie. I learned to realize that my life was not the end all, but a beginning with so many challenges ahead.

This movie truly is one of those that will challenge your worldview - Forrest is so kind, so wise as you said. He takes what he was given, good or bad, and turns it into something beautiful. We all should be just a bit more like Forrest, the world would likely be a much better place!
Near the beginning of one of the greatest 10 year spans of any actor ever in movies. From 1992-2002, it seemed like Tom Hanks could do no wrong. A League of Their Own, Sleepless in Seattle, Philadelphia, Forrest Gump, Apollo 13, Toy Story, That Thing You Do (which he wrote and directed as well), Saving Private Ryan, You've Got Mail, Toy Story 2, The Green Mile, Castaway, produced Band of Brother, Road to Perdition, Catch Me If You Can, produced My Big Fat Greek Wedding
And Tom had a number of really fun movies before then too like Splash and Big

That line he tells her “if there’s anything you need, I won’t be far away” always hits me. First time I heard it was in transformers
"Fortunate Son" was was released during the time of all the Viet Nam war protests like many other protest songs and obviously the troops were listening and relating to it. Anyone around during that era associates the song with the war.
I do love that you empathized with Jenny. Too many viewers judge her way too harshly. She was abused for almost her entire life, so that’s what she thought she deserved. And so Jenny thought Forrest was too good for her & she kept avoiding him to keep from ruining his life. She loved Forrest so much that she didn’t want to inflict her pain on him. After he stopped running, she was finally able to contact him about his son & get married so that Forrest would get uncontested custody of their son after her death.
This movie was ahead of it's time. They used actual footage of historical events and added Gump.

Jenny's sollution to any difficult situation was to "run". This is how she got away from her dad, this is what she told Forrest to do and this was repeated anytime she found herself in a situation she was uncomfortable in.

“Is he like me, or…is he…” is where I started openly sobbing in the theatre in case you were wondering. Gut wrenching. Such a great movie and loved your reaction.
What makes Forrest Gump so good is that the whole movie is just a picture of how life works. The movie is in a constant travel between funny, sweet scenes and sad ones. Just like life is. At the end of the journey, everything that is left...is the journey itself.
Yeah the ups and downs mean more when they are both present. Some fiction that is just sad from start to finish just sucks. I like how Forrest has money but he's happy as a clam just mowing the grass, fishing, and playing ping pong plus he has a simple little wedding and he's charitable not materialistic.

The incomparable Tom Hanks! This performance earned him is second Oscar. Spencer Tracey and Tom Hanks are the only men to win back-to-back Best Actor Oscars. If you don't want to cry, please don't watch the film that earned him his first Oscar, Philidelphia. I cried for a solid hour after it was over. Great reaction!!

Quite simply, the greatest film ever made.
Humour, sadness, action, drama and a Vietnam film all rolled into one.
I'm not a stone cold, heartless villain, but it takes a lot to make me cry when I watch a movie. Bambi's mother, I couldn't care less. Jimmy Stewart in, "Oh, what a wonderful life," - yeah right! The Lion King, when Mufasa bites the big one - on the verge.
But seriously - I bawled my big brown eyes out, on several occasions in this film. A real tear-jerker, and a wonderful character, played to perfection by Tom Hanks. Every bit as worthy for the Oscar as Rooney was to win the Premiership in 2007.
I cannot say it enough: This is THE film of all time. Watch it, and you'll see.
Speaks volumes when a film can tug on your heartstrings the way this one does. There is so much truth in this film and we all feel for Forrest and the rest of the characters in this movie. This is the second film with Tom Hanks that absolutely destroyed us. The Green Mile was the first one. Such an amazing actor.
Emotions up and down throughout this movie. I'm tearing up watching them watch this movie. And the "is he smart" scene hits me hard every time.
Dan didn’t just defend Forrest, he literally stood up for him, forgetting he doesn’t have legs and falling flat on his face. Dan was also the only one standing at the wedding.
One of the greatest soundtracks of all time. Great movie that was made that much better by the music.
The feather is a beautiful metaphor, of how most of Forrests life was him being taken where the wind blew him.
At 50, having gone through loss and illness and finally a loving family, this film keeps hitting hard.
Funny that Bob Zemeckis has two of the most perfect films ever made, Back to the Future being the other.
Great reaction, guys.....if you'd like another Tom Hanks film to check out, try "Philadelphia". It actually won him his first Best Actor Oscar the year before Forrest Gump.

Amazing film. One of my favorites of all time. One of the few I love from start to finish. A true Masterpiece.
Growing up in the 80’s, 90’s, and early 2000’s… Tom Hanks was on a f**kin TEAR! Seriously, that man couldn’t make a bad movie or put out a bad performance if his life depended on it.
I got to see him perform Shakespeare live in a small, intimate setting and it was a dream come true. He was why I became an actor. And I used to be in sales and I had Robin Wright as a client. I gave her my personal discount and when she asked why I told her “Because you’re Jenny and I have to.” She smiled big, laughed, and thanked me a hundred times.

Hey dracula7644! Forrest Gump does a fantastic job at balancing many genres of film (Drama, Comedy, Romance, "Coming-Of-Age", War Film, etc...) altogether in 1 movie! The performances are also VERY good, but I think my personal favorite is actually Gary Sinise as Lt. Dan! For me Personally, I often find myself connecting with this movie because my brother has Autism (So Forrest and my brother can relate a bit since they are both disabled).
I also just wanted to mention that I actually posted a video on my TH-cam channel that is almost like a tribute video to Forrest Gump (though I called it a Mashup). You see, there's a band named Family Of The Year, and they used their hit song "Hero" for Richard Linklater's 2014 movie called Boyhood. Interesting bit of trivia:
At 33:03 the shot of Forrest with a beard running is not Tom Hanks but rather his brother who looks a lot like him (he has no acting talent) He did all of the jogging scenes of Forrest with a beard. Only closeups of him when he is talking is it Tom Hanks.
During an interview on location in the desert he was asked if it was difficult to imitate his famous brother. He replied, "No, it's easy. You just stick your butt out and run like a dork"
Ive been in a similar dynamic as Forrest and Jenny. You can always love somebody, but regardless of what happens, respect the journey they are on.

First saw it in 1994, never stopped loving this film. Brilliant casting, brilliant soundtrack, brilliant story! 29 years and I still cry at certain scenes! A truly timeless masterpiece!

My mom looked exactly like Sally Field when we were kids and convinced she had a secret movie career, sincerely cried when she died. And that's all I have to say about that. Tom Hanks is absolutely brilliant, even when playing a local idiot. When LT. Dan comes with his magic legs made from the same as the space shuttle...the next year they were in Apollo 13th together.

I like that from his childhood to adulthood Forrest had so many amazing adventures and became so wildly successful but they anchored it at the end. He had such a tumultuous life, but like most people Dorothy Harris just kept on driving those kids to school.

Man, Tom Hank will bring it out of you. I've seen this movie so many times...watched it religiously as a kid and I still cry every time. Cast Away, Saving Private Ryan and yes, Green Mile are all tear jerkers. LOL
I believe this was his second Oscar-winning performance. If you wanna check his first (also a tear jerker, you’ve been warned) you should watch “Philadelphia”. Hardly anyone reacts to that one.

This movie has probably the best soundtrack of all time, it truly is amazing and suit this movie. It really is hilarious that CCR and helicopters go so well together.
Something to realize is that in the time frame when Forrest was running there were no cell phones. No internet. Even if Jenny had written him when the baby was born he wouldn’t have got home to get the letter for a little over 2 years. But then not only did she know little Forrest deserved to know his dad but Jenny learned that she did deserve the love of such an incredible person and finally let herself experience that if only for the short time left of her life.
Saw this in theatre when I was 14 and just started getting into classic rock. The amount of Doors songs in this blew my mind!
Did you guys think about the feather's meaning? A metaphor for Jenny's spirit flying far, far away but checking up on her 2 loves. I think that's what it represents anyway.🤔👍
That's actually a beautiful take, definitely love it! For us, it felt like a representation of the question that was always being asked about life and if there was such a thing as destiny or if we're all just floating around in the wind.

Sometimes, there aren’t enough rocks is such a simple and great line.
When it comes to Jenny, people always tend to forget that she was SAd as a child. Trust me, that tears you up as an adult. She was broken. And she knew it. She wanted to be better, but had no idea how to do it.

Mirroring the movie, Michael Conner Humphreys, the kid that played young Forrest, joined the military too. After high school, much like his movie character, Humphreys joined the army. He served for seven years. In interviews he said that working on Forrest Gump played a part in him joining the military.

Tom Hanks is an incredible actor, he basically makes me forget he is even Tom Hanks in this film and makes me believe Forrest Gump is a real, living and breathing person. When he says "Is he smart of is he......" Its insane how well acted that is...the emotion in his face is on another level...always brings tears to my eyes when I see that scene.
It amazes me how many people seeing this movie DO NOT understand the Jenny character. She was sexually abused by her father & as is true of many who suffer that early on...they are really screwed up as adults. Notice how Jenny seems to repeatedly fall into destructive relationships? Forrest is her one pure lifelong friend, but she resists being with him because she knows she is too screwed up & isn't "good enough" for him.
This movie struck a particularly perfect balance where kids (like me) loved it too. Of course all of the adult stuff flew right over our heads. But Forrest was so likable and quotable. We were quoting this movie all the time.
When I first saw this when I was younger - I really didn’t like Jenny’s character - As I’ve gotten older I feel nothing but sadness for her. She pushed away all those who tried to care for her and gravitated towards those who abused her as a result of her childhood.
This is by far one of my favorite, if not my #1, movie. I never used to get teary-eyed from watching this movie, until I had kids of my own. I have watched this movie anytime it's on TV and I get so chocked up every time now and I know the entire movie by heart.
One of the few reactors that somewhat understands Jenny's behavior. Forrest is too pure and Jenny doesn't want to taint that.
Yes that's kind of the deal here. Jenny knows what an amazing person Forrest is, but at the same time Jenny doesn't think that she herself is a great person because of what she went through in her childhood and then everything else she has done during her adulthood. She doesn't think she is worthy of someone as good as Forrest, she thinks Forrest deserves better than her, better than she can give him, thus why she rebuffs him every time. Even at the end when she has finally gotten her life together, she still doesn't seek out Forrest for herself, she only does it for their child. In the end she didn't marry Forrest for herself, she did it for their child and for Forrest.
Jenny was only ever happy when she was with Forrest, notice how nobody sat next to her on the bus either?

So after watching your Alien reaction, I went directly into you Channel and Subscribed and immediately started going through your list of reactions and as soon as I saw this one, I stopped immediately and jumped straight in. Forrest Gump is my all-time favorite movie followed closely by The Shawshank Redemption. Born in the mid 70s and growing up in the 80s, a lot of historical information came to us through media so when this movie came out, I was 16 I believe, it was amazing to see how many events were woven into the story and life of Forrest but you get to "see the world" through the eyes of a innocent, As I grew older, and through my love of history, learning things that I didn't realize how important they were in the movie, such as the ping pong in China, really increased my joy and love for the movie. I am so glad that watched and reacted to this film and am looking forward to watching many more of your reactions. I am about to continue searching through your catalogue of reactions and am hoping to find The Shawshank Redemption next! Much Love!!
