  • A stock Amiga 500 with an RGBtoHDMI vs a ULX3S MiniMig showing the performance difference between the two. Audio is coming from the MiniMig's DAC.
The ULX3S is a credit card sized FPGA development board. It runs the equivalent of a 68000 at 112.5MHz. The source for the firmware used can be found at github.com/LinuxJedi/Minimig_...
Video aspect is off due to the way I captured it. This is more a comparison of performance.

The DAC sounds great. It helps that this game has the best intro ever.

Thanks, the ULX3S can push the digital audio out as well via an SPDIF so you can have some audio equipment do the DAC. But I didn't have anything to process that signal. This is basically a soft-DAC as the hardware DAC on the ULX3S is only 4 bit.

On the contrary, during quiet scenes there's lots of noise and static. It sounds terrible.

MINIMIG looks great. How do you get one?

Does anyone sell the assembled boards? Never heard of this FPGA before

The ULX3S boards (which use an ECP5 FPGA) are usually available on Mouser. But with the chip shortage they don't hold huge stock of the board.

This variant (85F with 32MB SDRAM and ESP32 attached) cost £118+VAT from Mouser.
