My commute is ~206 round trip daily. 30,000 miles on my lightning since January. My 7th F150, very smooth ride and familiar layout. Duke Energy charges $19.99 a month for off peak charging at home. So much cheaper than feeding the twin turbos in the ecoboost , premium gas. Fingers crossed , no issues so far, this is my first EV.
Had a Lightning Lariat for over a year. It's been great! Helps so much during power outages (kept my sump pump going, saving my basement from flooding). Very smooth ride, quiet, and FAST AF! They have done some nice over the air updates since I got it but Ford has room for improvement software wise compared to Tesla. I encourage people to take a test drive before you knock it. If it fits your lifestyle, it will work great for you. If you tow 100+ miles every week, get a super duty. This first gen ain't it.
Ford really needs a home run badly. All they need to do is lower the price of everything in their lineup by about $30k and they are back in business.
F-series trucks are the #1 selling vehicles in the US. I think they're fine. They charge asinine prices because people will pay them
So smart! So simple! How u gonna tell the employees at the factory youre cutting thier pay by 60%?
But the dealers are still going to charge a Vehicle Market Adjustment.
@@KevinPurdieThey have to, to absorb all the negative equity for everyone that's upside down on their current loan and transfer to their new 😁 loan ☹️. The circle of life continues🤗.
@@Jeffrey-t8g well i’m glad im not part of the everyone club, and can walk away when they ask over MSRP.
IMO, the Lightning is perfect for the majority of pickup owners. Most people use their pickups as glorified commuters and travel less than 100 miles daily, so the range should be acceptable. Most people don't realize one of the best things about an EV is charging it back up while you sleep, and electricity at home is also highly affordable. However, some people drive or need to tow longer distances, especially for work, and those folks need to stay away from EVs. The public charging networks are just not up to par right now. For me, the worst thing about the Lightning is the price. If you can afford it, $95K for an exotic car or truck is fine, but the Lightning is still, in the end, just an F-150, and pickups do not need to cost that much.
Yeah, I have short commutes for work and on average don't drive very much.
I just don't have $100k to spend on a vehicle for which the necessity of charging would add hours to the few road trips I do take.
I think you really missed your opportunity to review what people want to know about the 2024 lightning.....how much does range improve with the new heat pump. Other than that, there's no difference for 2024.
Nice truck, if they wanted people to go electric they should offer these at low prices first.
Yep, especially at the start (like they did with the maverick) and then raise prices as they need to
Any new truck isn’t going to have a low price. I paid 50k for my lightning extended range about a week ago and I think that’s very reasonable for an EV truck. Considering XLT f-150s run about the same price. Some slightly less.
@@michaelt.9372 what dealer was this?? i havent seen any Lightning extended range for anything close to 50k even after PoS credit.
Typically, they build the higher price EVs first than gradually build cheaper vehicles once their supply chain and infrastructure is ramped up.
I'm tired of hearing that the F-150 lightning can't tow. Sure if you're towing across the country, You might want a diesel. But if you're towing anywhere normal people do then you have no issues towing. If anybody tows which most people that drive a truck don't. It's towing their boat or their RV. And it's never towing more than 200 mi. It's usually to your cabin or the lake. People that say you can't tow with a lightning obviously don't own one. And they're just hating on a product because they want to hate. A bunch of Debbie Downers!
I'd definitely hold off and wait for the 24 Lightning just to get the heat pump that will be included. Should make a substantial difference in cold weather driving efficiency.
I have the Lightening Platinum. Love it. The range is perfect and I'm not putting $140.00 a fill up in the tank anymore. No more gas or Diesel trucks for me. For my needs the F150 Lightening is far superior to a gas vehicle. Faster than a Raptor and Smoother than a Lincoln. I charge it for .13 cents a Kilowatt Hour at the house. It's the future. It will only get better and better.
Hardy is correct about the mileage, but he compared it to the worse efficient truck he owned that got better range. But if he compares what it costs to drive his inefficient truck just say 250 miles to what it costs to drive the lightning 250 miles would be nearly 5 times less. I have a Lightning platinum and can drive 100 miles for just $6. I had an old 2014 F150 that got around 10 mpg so it cost me the price of 10 gallons of gas to drive 100 miles. There's not many F150's that even get 20 mpg so now we're still looking at the price of 5 gallons of gasoline. That lightning could drive that 250 miles for around $15. I guarantee there not an ICE F150 that can drive 250 miles for $15.
I mean maybe the Powerboost Hybrid can get you 700 miles on a $100 tank of gas. That's being generous and assuming you're in a non-CARB state.
HI does the 2024 have a heat pump and the tesla charger plug?
Headrests have speakers in them! If you pull up slightly on tailgate, it will close without using the button.
i love the F150 Lighting i think its a cool looking truck its not over the top like some others inside and out it would be good though if it had more range at least 350 miles..
That radio antenna on the front hood is a aesthetic kill
Ben-Now that the Tesla Cybertruck is coming available, will it be hampered by the same constraints as the Lightning? Or will buyers view it as something like a luxury vehicle that looks like a truck? I agree with your summary about truck buyers. I sold cars for 2 years and truck buyers, especially HD buyers were the better informed customer that walked on the lot. The fastest way to lose a HD truck deal was not knowing the specs of the truck inside and out as well as those of the competition.
Cyber truck?
LOL
Ok
@@lordrayden3045 Its a legit question
@@weirdshibainu
Ot really, cyber truck isn’t going to be a thing, at least not a big / widespread deal
@@lordrayden3045 You can place a deposit. They're running around the Panasonic plant outside Reno.
@@weirdshibainu
Like 25 of them
It’s never going to be a wide spread thing, and those that do get spit out are going to be a mess.
$93k is obscene for a “truck” especially for one that has such limited range
For that price I can get his and hers Ram pickups call my big horns nicely equipped
In 10 years, if it makes it over 100,000 miles, with a dead battery they'll be selling for $1000.
I’ll take the combustion engine version. Thank you
The ford logo missing in the steering wheel is weird looking. Anyways good video, fair no bias explanations on it. Well done as usual. Btw the way I still miss you owning a TRX.
Range remains issue and also the usage when you spend all day on construction site and your pick up becomes your office...
Insane Ford Ben !! ❤❤
I think the truck is pretty cool. It has its cons now. But as technology continues to improve, Ford will continue to raise the bar for this ev model. Time will tell.
I’m in the market for a new car and I’m thinking of getting one of these. We live in an area with super cheap electricity and the prices have really dropped like a stone on these. It might make sense for me as a daily driver. We tow a boat in the summers but we don’t live far from a bunch of lakes so range isn’t a concern for us. I’m not an EV fan but this might work. Hmm.
How is acceleration compared to high spec gas version?
It will blow the gas version away
If these weren't 100k, I'd consider one for a daily driver. But I also have a truck for offroad use as well.
4.0s for the Lightning ER (with my draggy, best I've gotten is 4.7, all four wheels spin on launch) versus 5.1 for PowerBoost vs. 5.5 Coyote
@@ekaddo thanks, fully 20% quicker!
Owned the 3.5 powerboost hybrid before my Lightning and this is quicker. The hybrid was the fastest ice f150. The L is stupid quick, many shouldn’t have this much power IMO.
The future of pickup trucks?? No. The future would be diesel/electric for pickup trucks. Hauling and/or towing, especially in cold weather kills any practical range for driving, making this almost useless except for local runs & charge topoffs at home. Ford's production of this model is now less than half of initial build hype. Ford not thinking clearly on this one...
When I first heard about this for 40K I planned on getting one, I’d probably even think about stepping it up to a higher trim up to like 50K
Then the prices jumped and no way in hell am I getting one for what they are marked.
But just like a wrangler, they start selling them for what they should be marked, I’ll get one
It's amazing how much talk there is that Ford can't sell these, but our local dealer has them marked up like 8 percent over sticker.
@@weirdshibainumy local ford has had the same 3 on their lot since mid fall. I drive by them every day lol
@@bnorvs5929 I know right? Doesn't make sense. The one here has been on the lot for months. But then, they also want 100k for a Raptor Bronco
@@weirdshibainuwhy they won’t sell. Dealer mark ups. EVs sit. “Nobody is buying EVs!”… follow the money!
Keep in mind dealerships don’t want EVs. They do not need the same maintenance over time that ICE vehicles need (dealership loses service money) and the shift to direct to customer sales like Tesla is doing. Skipping the dealership crap.
Did they add HUD for 2024 models?
Is there any option with a long bed?
This truck is only “luxurious” if you can’t afford the Silverado or Sierra EV. 😂
This will be best selling once they adopt the Tesla chargers
Ben, As Far as looks go,The truck looks awesome ( not a fan of the wheels) Love the new color, but I just don't like EVs. I want the reliability of Gas or diesel, and must have the range, for hauling my travel trailer and 4 wheeler.
If this had the NACS port and integration with Tesla charging network I would consider one now. I don’t want to be ogled when driving a Cybertruck. I don’t think Ford will implement this until 2025, sadly
Adapters and superchargers in “early ‘24”. We charge at home 95% of the time. Most probably will too. Do you get gas most of the time at the same local gas station?
Home charging is great, full battery every morning. With bi-directional charging, you can make money going back to the grid (v2g). We’re getting solar to offset EV charging, power usage, heating/cooling (net metering) and getting off gas/oil and power company rackets completely. Pays for itself in under 5 years, probably faster with high electric costs in my state
@@mikeflanary642 true! then mentality switch of the "fuel" is in the garage/driveway is major. I have my receipts in fuel rewards from going to fill up my previous ICE F150s. EV costs are so much cheaper. 80% of my charging is in the driveway. The other 20% is EA subscription, so far that's been ~$350 to EA since January 2023. Huge saving for 30,000 miles.
Good and fair review.
I would rather ride a mountain bike everywhere if this is the future.
@benhardy thx for this informative review. I love this truck and it would be perfect for my lifestyle BUT to replace my 2020 Silverado RST that gets better mileage and is way cheaper to own makes zero financial sense, so I’m glad I watched this video. If I’m spending that much on a vehicle may as well go with a luxury brand. Ford’s in trouble with these unless they drastically reduce the price point I think. Keep up the great reviews.
300 miles on a charge if there’s minimal payload and nothing being towed. The charging takes between 45 minutes and 8-10 hours…No thanks with that
Under ideal conditions without air conditioning and not towing anything
If you’re someone that tows long distances, why are you even looking at an EV? I just bought one, and did a 300 miles each way trip no problem.
@@cylehendricks8892 go watch the towing challenge between the ford lightning and gmc sierra on the TFL channel. Sierra was gas, towed the entire route with fuel in the tank, lightning could only do half then needed a 50 minute charge.
I think the next gen would be something to seriously consider as they will have the bugs worked out and better battery/charging tech also a plug in hybrid would be good for towing and rural applications
Did these really have bugs?
The complaints I’ve heard is how god damn expensive they got
Unlikely. The physics of towing isn't a case of working out bugs. People that tow are willing to pay the added fuel costs. They are not willing to have to stop several times for a 300 mile trip.
@@weirdshibainu I said a plug in hybrid version for towing as then charging stops won't be needed.
@@weirdshibainu
Yep, if you’re towing this isn’t the vehicle for you
If you’re going around town or going less than 200 miles a day, this is for you
@@lordrayden3045 in canada I heard complaints of range dropping alot due to the cold and battery in the winter.
It has a 131 kw battery on the 300 mile range!
Ford employees got raises after their protests. They ruined it for the customers around the USA. 34k for a maverick lariat for standard features available in a 19k Kia.
Auto tail gate has to kill the battery hard
Solid State Lithium batteries are nearly here. All auto manufactures have samples. They provide 2x-3x range which pushes EV's past ICE vehicles. They also charge significantly faster. You'll see the first vehicles with them in the next couple of years.
We’ll see. I’ll wait until they prove efficiency, both with time and range, and that the vehicles are good for trading in after a few years of use and easy for the at-home maintenance mechanics out there
What do you call this color?
I want to get one, then permanently mount a generator in the bed for emergency charging
No trucks have 500 mile range unless they have a tank in the bed
Except my 2021 f150 2.7 eco boost with 36 gallon tank 700 highway range! Crazy, huh…
If adding over two tons more weight to it, getting far less miles and costing me much more than ICE then no way is this the future. I call it going backwards. Bad investment.
No bed liner and it’s a Platinum? 😂
2024 Ford F-150 Lightning Platinum Electric 75th Anniversary Edition SuperCrew Cab 4X4!
If they want these to sell, they need to either cut the price in half, or double the range. Otherwise, what are we talking about here?
Ford built a cool eclectic truck cool front end beautiful blue color
This is not a 2024….
Went from *“300 miles of range”* to “282 miles of range at 100% charge” REAL fast! Lol 😂
Another reason to buy the *gm* truck. The Silverado EV boasts 450+ miles of range on a single charge. Ford cannot compete with that type of range and as far as fully electric range goes, neither can Stellantis/Chrysler.
Range estimate... aka the guess-o-meter. Better off looking at miles/kilowatt (mi/kw) and the battery percentage.
Is this even a 2024 model?
He lying
Trucks are not fuel efficient, they just have larger tanks..
At that price it’s hard no from me. I might go look myself if it was $30k cheaper.
This the platinum trim (the most expensive). Lariats are $20-30k cheaper. It's still the first gen, they have room for improvement
I drive a 2023 colt sport with the 2.7 eco boost motor and we love our truck why would I pay $90000 for a f150 electric pickup that only gets 300 miles and that’s a stretch.
Yeah, No Thanks.
Cheers
The reason no one wants it is because we can get a better truck for 40K less
IM spoiled by tesla. All screens come on when a door is opened, pressing the brake pedal does a full power up. There was no need for a start button.
If EV is the future then the future is bleak.
94k. Lol
300 miles on a charge, unless you are towing something. No EV for me thanks. Nice video though.
Ford messed up, Ford's F-150 Lightning competes directly with Ford's F-150. Why would someone choose the electric version of the F-150 over the gasoline version? Did they even ask themselves this question? Without at least 100,000 sales/year, Ford has no chance of achieving a positive gross margin on the Lightning. That's not sustainable.
There are two major disadvantages to owning the Lightning, namely, reduced range/towing capacity, and the lack of a reliable fast charging network. The chief advantage of buying a Lightning, i.e., lower cost of operation and maintenance, is, apparently, not enough to attract sufficient numbers of buyers, thus the slack demand. The value proposition is tipped in favor of the F-150 ICE. When you are competing against yourself, you can't win without losing.
Tesla is in a completely different and more favorable situation. The Cybertruck has no significant competition. It's in a class by itself. It's part pickup, part SUV, part off road adventure vehicle, and will do well as a daily driver. It's a completely redesigned vehicle with cutting edge technology and features. There will be no shortage of demand for it under $80K. Will it cut into Ford's pickup market share? Yes, absolutely, more than the Lightning ever could. For the Cybertruck, the beauty is not skin deep. It will take a while for some to find its angular lines attractive.
Your title is misleading. This is a 2023 model year you are reviewing.
Can’t compete? It sure competes on fueling cost… you pay dearly for ICE truck range…
Canadians was all gas too 😊
I’ll stick to ICE powertrain
Cuando llega a su venta en México?
We don’t sell this in Mexico because the infrastructure does not exist & it’s a lawless nation controlled by cartels. Might as well try to sell in Somalia.
Way too expensive. Never going to get 300 mi of range with a 100 kwh battery in a truck this size on freeway. They need to advertise it as 230 maybe. And if you tow a RV trailer, they should advertise as 80 miles of range. And if you tell in the cold Utah climate, advertise with 50 miles of range. It really needs a 200-240 kwh battery to be competitive at this price. Considering this thing is light years behind the cyber truck and efficiency it can't get away with such a small battery pack. You have to compare it against the cybertruck which only has 123 kWh battery pack, but as twice as efficient so it's like it has a 200 kilowatt hour battery pack.
You’re showing the 2023!!! Not the 2024!! Ford isn’t making the article blue in 2024!
How's the resale value? I saw a '24 f-150 platinum EV with a msrp of $95000 for sale for $38000 with a whopping 500 miles on it? No thanks & who in the hell would buy a $95000 truck just to drive it around town because the range sucks & you have to plan your trip to MA sure there's a charging station somewhere? Lmao 😂😂
Let me know where that 38000 dollar Lightning is, at that rate it would have had to sell fast. Someone was a distressed seller.
Just bought a 2023, $16k off.
I’ll pass on a EV pickup or SUV!
Insanity. For less money I could have the ZR2 Bison HD with the Duramax. Way better choice!
Not the future I want
That’s why ford can’t sell these lighting is they are over priced and low range
EV = BS
Yeah, real great insight there
Actually it's very insightful.@@lordrayden3045
Great equation, love it!!!!

Had a friend in Murfreesboro, TN who bought one, the mileage is absolute trash. Barely 300 miles of range (282 miles at 100% charge) and if you decide to carry passengers or any amount of Home Depot household stuff, it gets as mileage like a Nissian Leaf. Really nice on something’s inside, but lots of molded plastic, for almost $100,000 usd….trash, trash, trash.
Hi, can you learn to drive better? Poor tires as you turn at a full stop. Sad.
EV's, not ready for prime time...💣
