That's how I dealt with it. My 2 older sisters got bad grades. I kept my grades up because I wasn't getting my backside busted. I knew what spankings felt like and I didn't want another.

My son had every letter of the alphabet on his report cards. From 1st grade on, I offered $250 for each report card that had straight A’s. Never had to part with a penny. Spoiler Alert: College years = 4.0 GPA: today teaches heart surgery. Go figure. Kids love to torture their parents? Or something.

Had a high IQ but couldn't be in the "enlightened" classes bc he'd rarely do homework & his report cards were maddening to look at. And you're right, after high school it was like: who is THIS person?? Today is very successful, but I won't ever get over the grief he gave me in elementary & high school, grade-wise. Maybe it's funny to some kids/teens to stress their mother out?
I believe in whoopings!!! I got whoopings as a child! And I even give my littles whoopings. Though I do believe that whoopings should only be for blatant defiance, disobedience, and disrespect! I got whoopings as a child for bad grades, and anything in my house under a C was considered failing! I hated getting whoopings for bad grades, because we all should know that even if one does study for an exam, the mind might just go blank at that moment and one might get a bad grade.. not always, but at times. I vowed to never give me children a whooping just because of a bad grade/report card! There's other options of correction/discipline that can be used. If a parent would make sure that their child does their homework, study and actually quiz their child and put effort into making sure their child's work is complete/correct/understood, then I'm pretty positive their child will start producing/receiving better grades/results in school! But let's do away with whooping kids over a bad report card/grade. I agree in whoopings.but just for the right reasons.
Yeah but sometimes those bad grades are due to the child being the class clown or mouthing at teacher to get classmates' approval. (a defense mechanism)
