Haha, I used to have an advice column in an MTB mag that very few people wrote into. That meant I could fill it with imaginary friends so Jello, Al Jourgensen, Gibby, Steve Albini, Mr Rollins and others all used to regularly write in with questions 🤣 if you follow my Instagram reels you’d probably enjoy the music clips too 🤘🏻

Totally agree with your analysis of the Ripmo. The DW link is a dream for pedalling and for descending. Double assegai is also brilliant.
I have had the v1 Ripmo carbon since 2018 and it has exceeded all my expectations. Fox performance suspension certainly helps. Also a lot lighter than the alloy AF. I slapped in a wolf tooth 1 degree angle headset to give me the same head angle as the v2 at 64.9 degrees from memory. Handles the steep rocky rooty trails here in Nelson NZ with ease. Brilliant bike! Still going strong.
Strange Ibis is not very common in the UK. Has a good following here in New Zealand and a good network of dealers.

My Ripmo AF rattled bad. It was the internal routed cables. I pulled tension where they come out and put double zip ties on cables. No more internal rattle.

I used two small black zips next to each other. Take tiny pliers and pull tight as possible for grip on cable housing. Then go to the entrance or exit of cable and repeat. Works perfect.
Pulling cables tight might stop the rattles but may interfere with free movement of the cables. I put some foam
sleeve over mine, which was only slightly more of a pain in the bum to feed through the frame than the bare cables. Yeah I did it twice - didn’t know of the cable rattle until I read about it somewhere mid build 🤦🏻I like a quiet bike so I pulled them and redid with the foam sleeve.

Hey Joe, glad you enjoyed it. My pal Russ still has a Bow Ti, iconic bike. The museum they have at Ibis HQ in Santa Cruz has some other amazing bikes in I never knew about. Like some really early carbon and some insane trials bikes

Take it from me, ripmos are great climbers due to the dw link. Track the ground amazingly well and basically no pedal bob. I tend to leave my rear shock open all the time except on long gravel roads etc. you still have to be agile on the bike for tech climbing, but that is to be expected. Note I have the carbon v1 Ripmo not the v2 AF

So yours has the Marzocchi coil fork? Does it still feel playful/poppy enough? I demo’d one and really liked it, but it was the carbon version with the fox air shocks. It was sky first time riding a FS bike and it was awesome, but I worry the Marzocchi will counteract the “pop” I loved so much during the demo. Plus the extra 1 lb vs the DVO

My only question, and this is personal preference, SRAM or Shimano? They do both specs, this and an SLX spec bike. I prefer Shimano 12s & brakes. Do you have any insight/preference?

In terms of bike weight, even with double Assegai and a coil shock the Ibis is 600g/roughly a pound and half lighter. The DW link set up also pedals a little more firmly than the FSR on the Specialized so it feels more responsive under power. The DVO fork is harder to set up than the Fox on the Stumpy though and obviously the rear air shock on the Spesh is easier to adjust than a coil. The Specialized also gives you a huge amount of geometry adjustment and the potential to create a much slacker, more stable 'DH feel' bike. There's the option to fit a 'mullet' link on the Evo too.
Pricing difference depends whereabouts you are in the world, but spec is broadly similar with more GX on the Ibis. At the end of the day both are excellent bikes with a really gripped and ready to rip feel though so whichever you choose you'll have a winner. That means choosing the shop you get on better with or whether you want a bike you'll see a lot of, or something more rare you'll get questions about the real 'ownership' difference between them.
Guy, which do you prefer, the Ripmo AF, or the Orange Stage 6 you rode with BKXC? I have a Stage 6 but have been looking at the Ripmo AF.
I am close to getting a ripmo but the only build available is the deore but with a Marzocchi Z1 coil fork. I have never tried a coil fork and have heard a few bad reviews, I was wondering if you have had any experience with the fork in question?
I’ve talked to several people with then and they all have no complaints, seem to be really happy with it

I've had my Ripmo for a while now and still taking some convincing it's as good as everyone makes it out to be. It does climb ok but honestly people saying it's a good climber are joking. My Scott Spark is a good climbing bike, this is not in the same league.
I've had some longevity issues with the Topaz shock and am not convinced it's going to hold up in the long term. I tend to run it in the mid setting a lot so I can pump the trail - in open setting it seems to wallow and rob me of momentum. Maybe I need to run higher pressures? The DVO fork has loads of adjustment but I still get a lot of stiction, something that seems to be quite common in them so might need the bushings machined.
The rims seems very soft, mine have a ton of dings in them despite a rim protector.
Still enjoy riding it but a few gripes that mean I'm not as blown away as I'd expected to be...
Oh and I hope Russ is still riding that Bow Ti of his. (I assume that's Russ the snapper). Always wanted one of the hard tails with the handjob cable stop. Pure class!

If you’re asking about the Marzocchi fork, it’s the blue medium weight spring, says up to 180lb

The Ripmo feels more positive/firm when pedalling and it’s lighter. The Specialized has the geometry adjustment and it’s slightly smoother / more comfortable overall.

I had to choose between this and the 2021 GT Force 29. I went with the force and the geo is perfect for me, but the Ripmo AF would have been just as good of a choice

Cheers mate! Had a bit of a “buyers remorse” regarding this Ibis Ripmo AF Deore build that I bought, being my first full suspension bike. There isn’t much info online regarding the DVO suspension that comes on the bike, for example. The weight of the bike was again, something that I wasn’t sure of… Thank you for the review and for clearing up the sizing doubts that I had, they’ve been most helpful…
@@Acensum glad I've helped. The Ripmo genuinely hides it's weight really well and Deore is an awesome groupset. DVO have brilliant customer back up as do Ibis so I'm sure it's a bike that'll look after you really well over time.
