  • Since the end of the Round Robin phase of the Challenger Selection series there has been one question doing the rounds, who will INEOS Britannia choose as their opponents for the semi final phase of the Louis Vuitton Cup?
    The answer was important as it dictates who the second pairing will be.
    The decision wasn't straightforward either.
    Matt Sheahan was at the skippers' press conference to find out why.

    I do not understand the comment made at th-cam.com/video/O-mkWNwN61E/w-d-xo.htmlsi=7i9PhB-r_MF2ii4q&t=306 which suggest some sort of scoring system other than a win equals a point and a loss is zero. Can someone clarify? He goes on to say that either half of the semi-final draw could conclude in 2.5 days which means a win = 1 pt. Perplexed ...

    There will be a lot of developmental work going on, so choosing the easier opponent gives Team GB plenty of opportunity to observe the two faster boats in their semi, and better prepare themselves for the final.

    First to five means five points which is equal to five wins or did I get it wrong? Potentially nine regattas if the end result is 5-4.

      Yes, 9 races max, first to 5 wins.
      2 races each per day except for the last day when there is only one race scheduled.
      Starts tomorrow, 14th September till 19th September with a reserve day on the 17th.
      Then it's onto the final which is earmarked to start on the 26th.

    The most significant thing for me was that Ineos chose the second race of the day. I am not convinced that the Ineos issue with poor performance in light wind has been sorted. The forecast is for lighter winds in the beginning, building as the day goes on. It would appear that Ineos is not so confident in their light wind performance.

      Maybe. However 2nd race gives you more chance to get the right jib onboard. This seems critical in all races.

    I disagree with you Matt. GB picking Alinghi gives the Brits another set of team building races and still more time for development. There’s also a better chance the USA, rather than the Swiss can beat the Italian’s. Team GB have shown some incredible gains in the round robins whereas Prada on the other hand, appear to have stood still, possibly because they had such a successful start to the campaign.

      However, if Jimmy needs motivation to LR go faster, what better than the prospect of racing Tom? AM definitely look slower without Goodison tho.

    Could you please ask the Challenger teams, if they would change the AC75 to a different type of boat in their own defence if they win the Americas Cup?

  • @michaelhermans4753
    @michaelhermans4753 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Some great points Matt, I personally think INEOS should have picked a stronger opponent first while they are on top
    The boats are so close in speed it will be down to starts, mark roundings and making no mistakes, there is no time for any boat development, only small tweaks

    • @timmedcalf1357
      @timmedcalf1357 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I agree, the one thing we can't see is the weather forecast. If it is due to be lighter then INEOS have made the right call by choosing the weaker opponent.

  • @stevec-b6214
    @stevec-b6214 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

    The correct decision imho, even the `weakest` can beat you if you make a mistake, or have some bad wind shifts. Drop off the foils and they don`t and you are done.

    Now we will see how well shadowing the pace of the boat has payd off.
    I'm not chearleading here: i have impression that Luna Rossa got exactly what they aimed for: if the pulled the handbrake in the last INEOS match, they knew they would 90% face the Brits in the final as INEOS will most probably easily win against an unimpressive Alinghi.
    LR in the meantime can test and improve against a stronger Challenger already knowing their stance against the Brits as they are. Slightly more dangerous for LR, but they already knwo they have the faster ship.

  • @bernieflynn4803
    @bernieflynn4803 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

    In the corporate world ( ie finance), the conservative decision can always be justified so Ineos would always have chosen Alinghi.
    Imagine this scenario - Ineos chooses and and loses to Luna Rossa. Ben then has to go to Jim Ratcliffe and ask for support for next cycle , easy for JR to say no Im gonna back someone else who makes better decisions. Much easier for Ben if he had chosen the "weakest" opposition,.

  • @MarcHillM
    @MarcHillM 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I wouldn't underestimate Alinghy, they are well-resourced and funded and shown speed. The choice not to choose LR is wise since Barcelona conditions could easily mean flat spots, dropping off the foils and supplied parts and tactical software issues, which every team has experienced.
