The supporting cast really carried this episode. I thought if they created a spinoff series featuring the Agatha King and Hammurabi with those captains and crews, I'd watch it.

A great series was made about Andor. Sure, good writers could do it.

heck, bad writers could do it. i dont need protomolecule and morality from an expanse spinoff. just gimme railguns, fast movers and PDCs and i'll be pleased as punch

I enjoyed how the hybrid launch pretty much locked you up. Just inhaled and froze. Did it to me, too..😊
I appreciate how this show develops and uses the "little people" so well. Makes everything else seem so real and have more weight.
Never thought about Prax and Naomi like that before. Very interesting.
Great reaction as always. Looking forward to the next episode.

One detail I love with Katoa is that everything he said makes perfect sense, with the right perspective and information, even the word choice based on the later books. I won't spoil it for you.
Protomolecule Julie talked about 'The Work' too - she could change course, but she couldn't stop.
Great link between Prax and Naomi! I didn't spot the parallel.
I agree about the minor characters, it makes the world feel a bigger place and minor roles like the Agatha King's bridge crew more than just automatons.
Mao's people have been working for a while, but the Protomolecule takes over the host very quickly, so they're very much fire-and-forget. It's only recently Strickland has found the more stable version with sick children - we saw one, and a dead kid, on Ganymede and the Roci. The one that fought Bobbi couldn't be controlled and had to be blown up with the control unit, so was probably one of the earlier generation, presumably an adult.
    Strickland is just the worst.

It's not explained outright, but I think the other hybrids may also be children only because Strickland was acting as a pediatrician, which gave him access to children. He'd merely tell parents that their children had died.

    • @Sinewmire
      @Sinewmire 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

@kirkdarling4120 some of them, sure, but he mentioned it was a recent breakthrough using the auto-immune disorder the kids have.

@@SinewmireHe would have stumbed upon that that if he'd already been using children. My point is that he already had access to children without working through any other physicians. Children get wellness checkups much more than adults do, so he had access to healthy subjects that he could falsely declare dead.

It's good you noticed how Amos' personality is rubbing off on Prax. Remember that I told you "Praxidike" was the ancient Greek goddess of revenge and retribution.
It's not unusual for a flag officer to have experienced the horror of combat in his early years. That's why military junior officers are put on the front line. But as you mentioned, they have to put that trauma on a leash. It's also not unusual for the enemies of their junior years to have become allies by their senior years.
Souther made two errors. One, he should have had Errinwright's message broadcast while he was speaking. Two, he expected too much honor from Nguyen. He expected Nguyen, when told "The jig is up," to have responded with, "Well, you got me."
But then there was MCRN Captain Kirino, who responded to the situation with wisdom. Souther's death hurt my feelings.
We knew that the Protomolecule had its own purpose. The scientist Cortazar said that it was building something. Julie spoke of "The Work" as well. Or more accurately, the Protomolecule itself said, "You can't stop the Work" and then Julie echoed it.
How to pronounce "Nguyen?" I have had a person working for me named "Nguyen" and my optometrist is "Nguyen." I've sincerely inquired of both of them how to pronounce their names properly, and both of them have confirmed it's simply "Wen." But when I listen to pronunciation guides, I'm pretty sure I can hear an initial aspiration that I can't deftly imitate.

The young officers on the front line who are killed or maimed can't get promoted. Those who survice unscathed see their careers move forward.
One "benefit" of showing the reality of death in war to young officers is to teach them not to become overly concerned about it. I am reminded of the stories of the many Union generals who were relieved of duty for not having the inclination to order assaults on fortified Confederacy positions (once the battles turned into trench warfare) out of concern for the masive losses in human life that would result from such attacks. It takes a special sort of man, perhaps one willing to numb his brain with whiskey, to look at numerical superiority as a sure win no matter how many of the soldiers under your command die. The politicians who promote and demote generals only want to win and are far removed from the battlefield and have no personal connection to any of the combatants.

@@Yesquire0The generals I served under during my career...all of whom were combat veterans of Vietnam...were well aware of the pain of losses under their command. I was always surprised at how well they knew the people under them. Majors and captains I knew early in my career still remembered me when they made general. Those generals I knew when I was on their staffs still remembered me years later. I served with a couple of Navy captain of aircraft carriers who knew by name half the 5,000 sailors working for them on their ships, and knew the rest by face and work area.

Unfortunately we can't talk about what "The Up" really means without going into major spoilers for book 8 and book 9
It's very cool to see it referenced in the show though considering they haven't adapted those books to screen yet.

Jules-Pierre Mao is obsessed with learning everything that he can about the protomolecule and does not always consider the cost of the knowledge.

He does. And he considers it worth it.

@@MattNolanCustom, I beg to differ. Mao believes (incorrectly) that with sufficient research the protomolecule can be made to do what he wishes it to do. He is willing to use everyone in the Belt as guinea pigs, and he almost destroys human civilization allowing Dresden to use Eros as a petri dish.

@@LeeCarlson the fact that he does/did these things does not mean that he didn't weigh up the consequences versus the rewards (as he sees them). We see him contemplate these decisions, however briefly, several times in the show. IMO it makes him a far more interesting character than someone who does evil things without a single second thought.

I think you're a little harsh on Alex.
ask Abraham what's more important: family, or God's will.
I'm not saying every impulse is the will of God. but his performance as pilot of the Roci has already saved countless lives. and his family doesn't seem any worse off. I think he sensed correctly that he could do more good as a pilot.
