    This was really cool to watch. I’m not construction whatever savvy, but my boyfriend wants to finish his family’s basement and I want to help because why not. This definitely gave me a great idea of the process we’ll be going through. Great video!!

    Paint before you put down flooring.

    • @doylay
      @doylay 7 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Not smart. Then all the dust from cutting the wood floor will gather on your newly painted walls. Easy to just cover the floor when it's time to paint. Any paint that drips onto the hardwood can easily be wiped up. Also if you paint first you run the risk of marking up the nice new paint while working on the floor.

    • @donnash5813
      @donnash5813 7 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      I've worked as a painter in new construction, renovations and repaints for 30 years. On new construction painting is always done before flooring. On renovations painting is almost always done before flooring. On repaints if a customer is getting new carpet/flooring all the painting is done before those are installed. On this video there doesn't seem to be a basement door to the outside so I understand why they did the flooring first as you mentioned because of dust. Usually there is a basement door and any cutting would be done outside. But like I said it rare when flooring is installed before everything is painted. If I was giving an estimate on this job I would charge more if the flooring was installed before I painted.

    • @sweetmslovinglife
      @sweetmslovinglife 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Why would you charge more? Is it because you would then need to clean the walls after the flooring?

    • @donnash5813
      @donnash5813 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      If I can paint first I don't need to cover bare concrete floor. As a painter it would make it easier for me. It wouldn't cost much more to paint after the flooring in put in but it does make it a little more work for me because I have to cover the entire floor. As I wrote above that is how it is usually done. On that job I would probably dust down the walls either way.

      If you are going to insulate a basement from the inside you use rigid foam insulation against the walls which provide a vapor barrier and also impervious to water. Fiberglass insulation absorbs water from the outside and inside and holds it there eventually creating a mold farm.

      The problem is the plastic -water membrane that was installed over the insulation.I am finishing my basement and will avoid the Plastic.I saw so many people pointing at this to be a big future problem and consulted an architect who pointed to me that I have to let the walls breath so any moisture captured inside the walls to be able to escape in the case of the plastic the water -moisture will be kept inside for long time and can cause many problems,mold,rotting,twisting of the framing ,musky smell and so on.
      I am using 1.rigid foam(the blue one),2.Typar paper,3.Roxul R-24 then the wall material.

      It looks like a new house. It's probably waterproofed from the outside.

      Can you elaborate? What would you do differently?

    • @nofurtherwest3474

      Depends on how many variables like the quality of the foundation walls, the water table in that area, how much rain, drainage system, etc.

      Except the mold issue is all theory. Plastic on the conditioned side to keep moisture from entering the wall or no vapor barrier and let it in and hopefully breathe and dry out. There is no best practice in 2018. Every expert has a different opinion on vapor barriers. Old plaster homes with no insulation never have mold in the walls. Maybe they knew something back then.

      WHY NOT cant you guys in texas use a damm shovel???

    • @derrick1981
      @derrick1981 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      maybe the water table is too high. I live in Miami, Florida and if you dig 10 feet you'll hit water or very close to it.

    • @loadi2865
      @loadi2865 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      A BASEMENT NEEDS ONLY A 4 FOOT DEEP HOLE ...

    • @derrick1981
      @derrick1981 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why only 4 feet. That doesn't seem correct unless you are just trolling

    • @loadi2865
      @loadi2865 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      first i am not a troller...If you put 36 inch windows + 1bloc bellow the window = 4 feet....and you have to slope all around the house so the water goes away fron the house..
