I haven't had a bag fade in the sunlight but I accidentally sun-bleached one of my left Aquazzura suede shoes and then purposely left the right shoe in the sun to make them the same colour again. Surprising it worked out and now they are even a little closer to the perfect nude for my skin tone.
I’ve been in London the past few weeks and came across your channel when I was looking for shops at Heathrow. Been having so much fun learning more about lux items and also about London while I’m here. I’ve eaten at many of the restaurants you’ve posted about, a bonus! Thanks for teaching me so much on my holiday. I’m having fun shopping and love finding new shops and designers to lust after. Also, really appreciate all the advice on how to care for these beautiful things. Scotch guard - duh! Why didn’t I think of this years ago with my first uggs. Love your closet and I am so impressed by the way you created what you wanted without the price tag. One tip for you I’ve learned about interior design - hang your curtains as far up to the ceiling as possible rather than just above the widow frame - it elongates the ceiling and looks way more lux. Transformed my LR when we made this simple change. Cheers!
Great video. I’m hoping to buy shelving units similar to yours but with glass doors. I like to be able to see my bags, but also need them to be inaccessible to my German Shepherd. I don’t think he would randomly grab a bag off a shelf.... but I’m certainly not willing to trust him with a Chanel bag at his level. He might think it’s a really nice chew toy! I love your display. It is art.
Hey, I think Amie used the PAX elements from IKEA. They are very modular, so you could have drawers on the lower levels instead of shelves so that your lovely dog can’t reach the bags - and then just use the drawers for something that nobody needs to see :) (although there are also drawers with a clear glass front, in which case you could store beautiful accessories in there :D)
Great video! I saw your little note about the pampas grass & wanted to share a tip I learned recently from a florist. Get a can of cheap aerosol hairspray, take the pampas outside and spray a light coating of hairspray. Allow them to dry fully and the shedding will stop.
❤️ this video! I just renovated my closet and included an area for my bags. This is how I’ve been storing my bags now too and I love being able to look at my collection. Nice to hear that dust hasn’t been too much of an issue for you.
Great tips! I’ve actually used an upright napkin holder to store clutch purses and it’s worked out really well the last few years. I just put tissue paper around the clutch so it doesn’t touch the metal 🤗
Any coloured item will discolour in time from sun. You should get some black out curtains and just close them when you are not there. If i was to have this kind of space, I would get them glass doors doors to prevent having to dust them xx
It’s hard to know what to do as people give different advice. I think if they are not in dust bags they are more likely to dry out over time. My classic flap was on a shelf for a year and that definitely happened. Dust bags from luxe brands are usually very breathable fabric and my Chanel SA advised me to keep them in there but not in the box as that stops air circulation. In hot climates or even here in summer they can get sort of stuck to the shelves so even sitting them on felt or folded dust bag can help. Mine are in a closet with sliding doors in dust bags except a few I’m currently rotating a lot - I also worry about burglary and keeping them discreet so they are harder to find. They do look so lovely on display though.
Seriously? Oh my goodness, I've never heard of Chanel bags drying out! I always just keep mine on shelves and never had any issue. Do you use a lot of air conditioning? I wonder if that might have an impact. The burglary thing also freaks me out - the only thing I figured I could do though was take out VERY comprehensive contents insurance lol!
@@ChaseAmie no we don’t have air con (wish we did) I think over short term it’s fine but will shorten the ‘life’ of the bag in the long run. I’ve never put leather care product on my Chanel bags I’m too scared but do with other brands as it helps keep the lustre and vivid colour. Your closet looks immaculate and I agree it’s a joy just to see them daily
Hi! I also keep mines in the dust bags but some of them has deformed the leather 😭 when I keep them upright my Prada, my YSL does leathers are softer and I don’t know how to storage them. I had it like in the video and the weight of the top part of the bag damage the sides of the bags 😭😭😭
Your display is absolutely gorgeous! Unfortunately my bags are facing the window/light so I kept them all on dustbag. To each their own I respect everybody’s opinion on this, do what your heart tells you to do. I would definitely leave them out if the light wasn’t hitting directly on the bags. Ps You look lovely as always💕
Great all your comments but I also have bags that are soft leather and they got a bit deformed 😭😭 like the big YSL, I don’t know how to storage them. I do keep them in dust bags
We have high humidity and fierce sunlight here in Hawaii, so storing leather bags is a challenge. So far, I have been keeping mine in their dust bags, with tissue paper wraps and stuffing, and in their boxes, but I am going to try open shelf storage, with dusting and a dehumidifier as necessary. And of course, out of sunlight. At this point, I pull them all out regularly to make sure they are not getting moldy. I want to see my babies too, not hide them away. I feel like they might need to breathe, although they have been fine so far, and maybe the hardware would do better stored. Just what I need, more to dust, right? The struggle is real.
if the bags are in the dustbag but on a shelf, do you still need to take them out to air them, or do you only need to do that if they are stored in the box?? also, honestly that room is goals, the set up but mainly everything in it lol 😍
The problem with even minimal dust is it gets on the hardware and over time spoils it sadly. I would never buy a bag that has been displayed open. I have glass door billy bookcases. You can see them perfectly xx
Really enjoyed this, thank you! The only thing I would suggest is to be aware of heating - don't store your bags next to a radiator or floor vents. Same with moisture - if you have storage close to the bathroom, for example.
Great information Amie! I haven’t seen all your videos yet but do you have one on how you store the chains in your flaps while they are on your shelves?
Love your tips ☺️ I also don’t store my bags in dust bags because I like to look at them, but also because the hardware of one of my Mulberry bags started tarnishing after I kept it in the dust bag. I had stored in without a dust bag for more than two years with no issue, and then within 1-2 months of storing it in the dust bag, I noticed the tarnishing! I’m not 100% sure this was caused by storing in a dust bag, but everything else was the same (kept in the same place)!
I live in QLD Australia, the climate can be quite harsh here (hot & humid along with a decent wet season), my bags are kept in their dust bags in a room where I have complete control of the temperature & humidity (along with my entire wardrobe). I also check them regularly when they’re not getting used just to be sure.
Thank you for this super helpful video. I just started my collections and love to see all your tips to take care of the bags. I would like to keep them looking beautiful for years to come. Love your channel.
Thank you for sharing these tips, Amie. May I know how and where do you store your dust bags and boxes if they are not in use? Do you have a specific storage area for them?
Really good video, I wonder do you used bag pads at all or do you think because they are stored on a shelf they arent necessary? I cant decide whether to get some or not. currently turning one of our spare rooms in to a dressing room and very inspired by your closet thank you.
I’ve heard that if a bag is not used for a longer time and stands out on a shelf, the piped edge on it can get sticky and actually stick to the shelf, leaving a mark on the shelf, but also looking worse itself. Have you ever had any experience with that?
Hi I know this is an old video but, hopefully you’ll still see my question 😅 do you use any bag organizer or base shapers while storing your bags? I’m just worried about sagging or creasing on the base of the bags. Thx!!
Thanks for the tips! I'm working on a dressing room in my house and will be having a separate area for my handbags, displaying them on shelves like what you have. I don't have a large amount of handbags like you, but I do have a decent collection and want to be able to have a nice space for them!
Thanks for the video. I’ve been trying to figure out how to create a handbag wall in my office and was concerned since I leave my shades up all the time. The wall I am going to use is perpendicular to the window, similar to your room. I am glad I can move forward with planning my handbag wall so I can stare at them while I work :)
I’m so torn about how to store my bags, currently I store them on shelves in their dust bags, I thought the dust bags are breathable material so still allow the bags to breathe? I used to store them in the dust bags in their box but quickly learned that was not a good idea thanks to Sophie Shohet... what to do what to do lol
So properly made dustbags are - I remember LV saying their dustbags are specifically designed to allow for air circulation. But, that's also assuming that you have the perfect environment in terms of air, temperature etc. Which is how most shops store their bags. Most of the issues I've seen have come from extra humidity and then the bag warping because of weather conditions that weren't spotted because of the dustbag. That said, even in mild weather climates, every SA I've spoken to about this has always said regular airing is important - it just lets the leather breathe :)
Thanks for sharing. What about if your leather or Chanel handbag has dust on it? Do you just wipe it with dry cloth or slidely dam cloth? Do you use leather cleaner? Also do you clean your handbag after each usage or outing? I wish i can store my handbags like your but the dust is crazy even though my room do not have a lot of traffic and i don't open the room window at all.
Always a dry cloth. If there's a specific mark, then I'll use a damp cloth but for dust, I always use a dry cloth. If you dampen the cloth, I find that it forms the dust into little clumps on the bag which are then more difficult to remove. I don't clean after every outing - I just don't find it necessary (and I'm lazy haha!). Do you worry or have you had any issues with white/ivory bags yellowing at all? I have a white classic flap and am paranoid it is going to yellow because I have heard so many horror stories. I may sell it just because I am too paranoid!
I haven't - and that's never even occurred to me to be honest! I just bought a white bag so now I'm a little concerned though haha. I'm gonna do some research to see if there are any preventative measures!
