    This is gonna sound stupid, but I think you should also put a deck of cards in there. maybe a small journal and pen. They hardly take up any room, and I find them actually pretty important.
    If you end up being on your own for a while, or even just with 1 other person. It's important to keep yourself sane. A little entertainment or something to do can be very important. Being out in the forest for a long time with nothing to do can easily make someone go crazy.

    Important note: For those carrying guns in their packs, make sure that you know that gun inside and out. You should be able to take it down to the screws and put it back together again quickly. Also make sure you have the care tools for that particular firearm, such as bore-snakes, ramrods, jags, brushes, cleaner and oil. Filthy guns eventually rot and a rotted gun is just a club with a lot of moving parts. Another thing, 50 rounds sounds like a lot but it's really not. 200 rounds is a fun day at the range. So pick a caliber that has a good balance between stopping power and ammo portability. In an end of world scenario, 9mm would be ideal for those two factors as well as the fact it's an incredibly popular caliber (with firearm enthusiasts and the police) so there will be a lot of it for a long time
    And for the love of all that's holy TRAIN WITH IT. That gun won't do you any good if the first time you use it is in a defensive situation. Guns aren't like in the movies or video games, and you are not Nathan Drake. Guns are a very personal thing. I am former competitive marksman, but I can't hit squat with a gun I've never used with sights that are set for someone else. Every shooter has specific needs for their firearm in order to perform optimally, so don't just go buy one and shove it in the pack. This is especially important if you plan on carrying it in a holster, milliseconds matter and the more time you spend fiddling with the strap the less time you have to actually aim and fire properly and not waste all of your ammo. Do yourself a favor and leave the "Pray 'n Spray" to the shotguns and sub-machines.

    I'd suggest the water bottle be metal so you can use it to treat water as well as drink

    • @BrentRose
      @BrentRose 7 ปีที่แล้ว +67

      I was on the fence about that, and it's not a bad way to go. Personally, I really like have a clear bottle with gradation lines, especially if I already have a pot for boiling water, but yes, a metal bottle is also a solid way to go.

    • @KennReed
      @KennReed 7 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Brent Rose the metal bottle can also get hot!
      so be aware of the temperature of the outside of the bottle. not really a big issue but a metal can, is a upgrade compared to plastic....

    • @varian4
      @varian4 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      grilin18 make sure if you get a metal bottle that it's capable of boiling water / being exposed to a flame. Most aluminum bottles have a plastic liner inside so that's not good... But your typical stainless or titanium bottle is simply polished on the inside and out.
      Personally i like the idea of a 1 qt boiling pot /cup, as these can often be used as the storage for your stove and fuel (if you're using propane/butane) and any and all cooking/eating utensils in one kit. And these are typically made with handles on the outside so they'll be just as good for making your morning coffee as well as making a stew.

    Soldier tip: Remeber to water-tight-pack your fabrics/paper or anything that is harmed/attracts water, or else your backpack will go from a mere 40 lbs up to 50-60 lbs when it gets soaked. A plastic garbage bag will do. Remember, those 10 cents will save you 10 lbs. Might not seem as much, but when youre miserable and cold and have miles to walk, it does! Trust me.

      A pack is great but water gets heavy real fast if you are carrying 5 days worth, as well as your camping gear etc. I would recommend adding one of those luggage bags that have wheels or some sort of personal shopper cart dolly unit to hold the heavy stuff. Obviously a luggage cart or shopper cart that has tiny 1 inch wheels will not do, you need a nice big set of wheels like 4-6 inches at least to make hauling comfortable. Make your own cart! Harbor Freight has great and cheap wheels!

    A lot of people who have bags like this have them becuase of actual experience or needing them. Military , first responders and remote surveyors etc.
    DItch the tent and get a bivy. Basha/hootchie is better for warmer climates too.
    Cut up a Z lite for space and use a 45 litre bag if you are actually on foot and not backpacking with trail poles + hitchiking. You can also go ultra hobo and fill a garbage bag with newspaper and grass bepending on whats available to make a matress.
    Make your own food. Cheaper and you can make longer lasting stuff. Plus when you use it it doesen't cost a crapton to replace.
    Make a soda can stove.Lighter, cheaper and less moving parts to fail in the long long term.
    Fire? Lense. Bic lighter. Ferro rod. Actual Flint and steel. Fire piston. Bowdrill. Potassium promagnate ignition reaction etc. Diversify.
    Crush a sparkplug and add th epercelain to the tip of something rigid. Better glass breaker than anything not a tactical pen. Also works if thrown too.
    Knives are personal. Mora is good. Get nothing with serrated edges. More to clean and harder to re edge.
    Use lead pellets for slingshot. It gives amuch better ration of weight to mass in the hit. Practice though.
    Fishing rod can go. Learn to hand reel and fly. Gill nets are better for the long wait. Hatchet is too small for long work.
    Get a folding saw. Can be used one handed even when down on energy. (like haven't eaten for 5 days straight energy low.)
    Print all info. Print all maps. You may not want to avoid cotton in tropical areas. Sometimes staying wet IS the point.
    Pack a skivvy roll of standard under clothes. Socks/jocks and the shirt. Those need changing more than the outer layers.

    Ok....... he starts off by saying he can't see spending a lot of $ on gear he may never use, then starts talking about 400$ backpacks, 130$ sleeping pads and 550$ sleeping bags. Asinine. You can gear up with military surplus just as well for fractions of those prices. And yes, you can still camp with the stuff.... armies all over the world do exactly that.
    This video is out of touch with the realities of common folks. A well-meaning trendy pushing stuff most people cannot afford to buy. No offense to the man, but this is not a fit for most folks these days. Oh, and please don't strike a ferro rod with the sharp side of your knife, if damages the blade. Use the spine. Also, why spend 500$ on a backpack but 12$ on a knife? What?
    I finally bailed when he said "between my knife, stun gun, and slingshot, I feel pretty well protected." Oh, God... glad he wasn't caught in the aftermath of Katrina.
    Ok, gotta go. If you're a trendy with a lot of cash and no real disaster experience, keep watching this. If you're a realist, go hunting for MILSURP gear and use the savings for survival, medical, firearms, and hand-to-hand combat training. Good luck to all.

      @@Soff1859 223/5.56 was changed over after a study was done (after the Korean war) with the idea being to take people out of the fight as a non-walking casualty. IE: it takes 2 people to move that person, so a total of three people are now tied up and not shooting back vs. 1 person is dead and they keep pushing forward. (This is why American SF groups teach to "win the fight first")...7.62x51 (308 win) is still widely used as a NATO cartridge, however, the average soldier load out is up to 300 rounds of 556 vs 180 rounds of 762...so philosophy and round count are the reasons NATO uses 556.

      That's a good question, and honestly, I didn't tally it up because this is stuff I've slowly acquired over the last 5+ years. My guess would be between $2,000 - $3,000. Not cheap. But if you use it for backpacking and camping over many years then you're getting your money's worth.

    About that Gerber Hatchet, it's good for chopping down wood, but not for splitting wood. For that you really need something with a wider wedge and a slightly longer handle. You could actually pretty much forego a survival knife with a good short-axe (some have good points that you could use for various crafting needs), or pretty much forego an axe and knife with the right kind of machete. They are less specialized tools, but weight is a huge deal.

    The comment about investing money in supplies that may not be used for a while is a valid point and recognized reality of preparedness. Although I feel that an adequate amount of food, water, and other essentials is not a waste, but a necessity. Regardless of the emergency we still have to eat, sleep, etc. Once your supplies are established it takes little effort to keep it up. Soon as we are warned of a hurricane or potential bad weather, people clean the stores out very quickly. And sitting in the dark, bored, and sweating or chilled to the bone an starving for days is hard to endure.
    I have no problem with the bug out bag or whether someone buys cheap or expensive gear. The only thing that really matters is to that we can fulfill our needs and survive an event.

    While I agree a sling-shot is good for hunting, it's going to be a piss poor self-defense option. For those who won't, or can't, carry a good handgun and plenty of spare ammo; pick up another item while you're at REI getting your tent... a large canister of Pepper Spray designed for defending against bears. About the size of a mini fire extinguisher, this is going to be far more effective than a sling-shot for self-defense. The wide spray even makes it better than a handgun if you get threatened by a small group of desperate individuals willing to commit violence to get at you.
    No matter how compact, a tent and sleeping bag will easily take up the most amount of space in your BOB than literally everything else you carry. One way to cut down significantly is to avoid both. Carry the green colored version of the SOL Escape Bivy. It's a very lightweight improvised sleeping bag that has zero competition as far as small size. Carry a specifically designed lightweight tarp big enough to cover you completely. Practice setting it up into a shelter. Yes, a tent is bigger. But it's going to be way too big and bulky compared to a lightweight tarp that takes up a fraction of the space in your BOB.
    Also, the issue with Mountain House freeze dried meals is that they require precious water. A better solution is to get 3 MREs (meals ready to eat), then do what most soldiers do... break them down to be less bulky by eliminating the cardboard and a few other things. Sew up what's left into one MRE outer bag. There's your 3 days of food. And get MREs that all have the heating element included inside each one.
    You get hot food, without making a cooking fire that could attract hungry and desperate people thanks to the delicious smell wafting into the air. Not good! But a stove is important. As good as the Dragonfly is, it's just too bulky. And honestly, are you going to be carrying around more than one bottle of gas with you? Less bulky is to get one of the smaller, more compact stoves designed to run off of butane canisters. (If money is an issue, go to Wal-Mart and get the standard Primus stove that comes in two pieces.) One small canister, one compact stove, something like a 750ml pot/oversized mug with a lid; and you're all set. Takes up much less room.
    Also, no one wants to talk about it, but you might need to use your main knife to defend yourself. Both from 4-legged as well as 2-legged predators. That means you're going to need something with some serious blade length. I hesitate to recommend anything with a blade under 7-inches. And longer would be preferred. (Again, for an inexpensive option, a stock KaBar USMC knife is a good choice if you can get the one with the hardshell sheath for it. The Ontario RAT-7 is another solid choice, though it will cost a bit more. Both blades are made from 1095 carbon steel. Toss in a good compact sharpener and you never have to worry about using a dull blade.)
    For medical: You're going to want to add a tourniquet to your kit. The most compact one out there is the SWAT-T tourniquet. Realize that using one means it has been already decided to potentially sacrifice a limb later to amputation in order to stop the bleeding and live. Tossing in a splint would be a good idea as well since the commercial ones are easier to use and more effective than improvising one out in the field. Also, a couple of packs of Quik Clot to stop blood loss if something other than a limb has been injured.
    Finally, carry some tinder with you if you need to start a fire. I like carrying cottonballs in a small ziplock baggie with a tiny container of vasoline tossed in. I can coat the balls in the vasoline when needed. Yes, you can do it before-hand. But I find it makes a mess.
    Overall; a very good and informative video.

    The Leatherman is a must have, for anyone. With just that, I survived in the wild for 6 months, everything else I just foraged and built myself. Wish I had the axe though, lol.
    Also, I would use the Black Diamond Mesa instead of the REI tent. It can be set up in less than a minute and is extremely lightweight and durable. You may also want to get a pocket guide on edible plants as well as a trapping (kill to table) guide. Trapping vs hunting.. trapping takes less calories / effort, however, it is less reliable imo.

    HAHAHAHA... sorry, this is kind of hilarious though. That backpack must weigh a SERIOUS amount, you won't be putting down any mileage unless you're on straight road. I attempted a long distance hike 2 years ago, my backpack had one third or maybe half the stuff in it and it was 39 pounds and it had none of the gimmicks like a multitool, radio or even a tent. I bullshit you not, I was in the best physical shape I ever was but apparently I was still way underprepared ...fucking forget about it. I gave up.
    It might be just me, but this looks way too unrealistic.

      John Doe, I know that looks heavy. And it probably is, but that doesn't make it unpractical. I spent 12 days hiking the Rocky Mountains (Philmont Scout Reservation, New Mexico) with a pack that weighed 51lbs. It was tough, but 67 miles later I could say that a lot of that stuff came handy. But, what you would pack should still be up to you.

      John Doe, I have to agree with Chris Trimble. I did the same camp except my pack was 65LBS (I'm rather large so things I have weigh more) and the course i took was one that was over 100 miles in two weeks. Aside from some cold weather gear that I brought, i used everything in my pack at least once. What Brent Rose had in his pack was pretty much the same as I had, except for that cool hand saw, and you find that with a good fitting pack that supports the weight well, getting good mileage in a day is not actually that hard.

      Jacob Etheredge yeah it's fine, I wasn't for anyone to agree with me lol, was just a comment and I did put a disclaimer at the end. One thing I forgot, which you mentioned is a 'fitting backpack' ...boy did I learn a lesson there. I think that sole item can make or break the entire thing.

      As you say, a good backpack is make or break for things like this. I don't understand how you got half this equipment weighing as much as 39 pounds though. I do a one week mountain hike every summer where we, obviously, bring everything we need on our backs. My pack normally weighs a little less than 35 pounds.
      Now that I think about it though, we usually organise what we bring beforehand, so we don't have many redundancies (mostly). Then we distribute the items we share so we carry about the same amount of weight. I guess that would bring the total mass down a fair bit. So, addition to the list; find someone to survive with, sometimes the sum is greater than its parts.

    I think you should consider bringing seeds with you, as they weight nothing and are the food you can create when you find a new space to do so. As a farmer, I also think that a long sleeve office shirt that is tough is a great for keeping bugs away. There are also some plant medicines like comfrey and plantain ointment that are essential for rashes, bruises and cuts.
