Solar chargers kept our phones going, and other than that, we barely noticed.

Great start! Ditch the big flashlight and can opener. Get several LED flashlights in AA or AAA, including a headlamp. All battery items should take a common battery, and all the same type. Pack extra batteries. Get either a Wenger or Victorinix Swiss army knife, choose the best tool combo that you think you may need. Carry either a Leatherman or Gerber multitool. Waterproof notebook and Fisher Space pen. Another source of fire, like a Bic lighter. A way to carry water, like a Nalgene bottle, titanium canteen with cookset with its own sling. A stronger sheath knife. I suggest TOPS brand knives. Ditch the airline blanket and go wool. Wool warms even when wet, cotton kills in the cold. Hat. Sunglasses. Heavy boot socks and nylon dress socks. Wear the heavy sock over the dress sock, less chance of blisters. Ditch the tennis shoes and carry WORN IN hiking boots..
Do not keep food or meds in the hot car. Take your bag inside at work or in the house when you are home. And of course, 2 or three large bandanas. One of the most useful survival items ever! SAS pocket survival guide. Silcock key to access water in most any city.

    A few tips:
    - Wrap some duct tape around an old pen tube cut to length. It saves a ton of space and you can slip some cord through the tube to tie to something, use it as a keychain.. whatever. Super useful.
    - You can make easy waterproof matches by coating them in wax, even a normal candle will do. Just scrape a bit of wax off and strike. You can also take some cotton balls and soak them in wax to make some waterproof fire starters while you're at it. Double points if you use a citronella candle, because it will ward off bugs in the wild when you actually need them. (Just take the cotton balls, quick dip in melted wax, and shape it into sticks or something while it cools.)
    - Those flint strikers are actually magnesium. They work in a different way than most people assume. You CAN strike them and make a big spark, but you can also slowly scrape a pile of dust/shavings off of it and then strike the spark at that pile. The magnesium will ignite incredibly hot and burn even damp materials.
    - You can use bleach for a few things, but most of all you can disinfect water with it. About 5 drops of *plain normal bleach* (no color safe, scents or anything like that. Just pure bleach solution.) to a gallon of water, shake well and let it sit for an hour or so. Leave the jug open for another 15-30 minutes to allow any excess fumes to escape and it's safe to drink. 1-2 drops to a liter, 5-6 drops to a gallon. No more. It's perfectly safe.
    - For anything you pack with batteries in it, add a sliver of paper or plastic between the battery contacts, kinda like when you buy a new toy or something. Storing something with the batteries connected for a long time can cause the batteries to rupture and leak or corrode and destroy your device. Just put the batteries in your flashlight or radio, add a slip of paper and close it up, maybe leave a bit of string or paper hanging out so you remember to remove it when you need it.
Hopefully these help someone out. Good luck, stay safe and never trust blindly! Do your own research!

Those flint strikers are actually ferrocerrium(sp) rods. They're often attached to magnesium, but the fire steel itself is not what you can scrape to get a good pile of metal that will ignite easily.
You're not going to scrape up a pile of unburnt shavings from that rod, and you're not going to get magnesium to ignite by merely shaving it. That's why ferro rods are often sold glued to blocks of magnesium. They do different things.

    Pro-Tips:
Removing packaging can help keep bulk and weight down.
Also, putting things in heavy duty resealable storage bags (ziplock) can not only help you keep organized but they can keep things dry and serve as a way to carry water or other things in a pinch.
I keep my field books and maps in a gallon sized bag and have a few more bags in my kit.
Also, you should really have a roll of TP in there, for a stranded in the woods/snow type scenario. Remove the core and stuff it in a quart sized bag to really compress it and save space.

One really good thing about Dr. Z's choice of bag is that it's nondescript, it's a really simple black bag that doesn't stand out. When I chose a backpack for my but out bag I made sure to buy a simple but well built non-tactical looking pack because in a SHTF situation it pays to be a grey man. Nowadays most people in the West are city dwellers so in a situation where there's a mass of people involved it pays to blend in.

I have to disagree with your inclusion of expired meds. You can't rely on them to still have the proper dose of medication, and can be worse than useless. I would suggest occasionally checking on the stuff in your go bag, and replacing anything that has expired.
My qualification to say this: I did a single research project with a pharmaceutical company on how to best formulate one of their drugs, and in the process learned what they base their expiration dates on. Yes, they are very conservative with their estimates and give themselves a margin of error, but it is not entirely conjured out of thin air to scare you into buying more. You've got wiggle room equivalent to about 10% of the original estimated shelf life (if the manufacture date and the expiration date are 5 years apart, you can go past by a few months and be fine, but if they are a month apart you can only go past by a couple of days).

Took a mythology class last year. The Hindu cycle talks about the age of Kali, in which 'all kings occupying the earth in the Kali Age will be wanting in tranquility, strong in anger, taking pleasure at all times in lying and dishonesty... prone to take the paltry possessions of others. . . . . They will be short-lived, ambitious, of little virtue and greedy People will follow the customs of others and be adulterated with them; peculiar, undisciplined barbarians will be vigorously supported by the rulers'. For the most part, grocery store and pharmacy items have an expiry date only because the law requires them to have one. I've had sour cream and yogurts 6 months after the expiry. It's already spoiled, right. some brands of yogurt are made from starters that they've had for 100 years.

    A few things missing from that list;

    a decent (folding) saw

a cooking pot or fire-resistant mug of some kind
    fishing line + hooks
    a sewing needle
cordage (+ the knowledge of how to make more if you need it)
Depending on your climate and desired comfort-level, a decent sleeping bag, sleeping mat and/or hammock might be advisable, but those (esp. the sleeping bag) are the things that really take up a lot of space, so it depends on how big a pack you want.

Assorted paper maps (city+state), good-quality compass, zip ties, assorted cordage, lightweight tent-spikes, small tarp, kindling (mine is cotton balls with some vaseline), sewing kit... just some of the things you might find useful to include in your bag.
Mine also includes a shower curtain & blanket (bedroll), light foam sleeping pad, a water purification kit (small bottle of bleach, collapsible plastic container, funnel, small pot, silk scarves), a small, folding, light-weight, wood-burning stove, small trowel, a small crowbar, 2 knives, utensil set, collapsible silicone kettle, a tactical tomahawk, khopsi machete, mosquito head-nets & insect repellent, palm-sized telescope, binoculars, magnifying glass, bicycle tire repair kits, 5-liter water bag, various plastic bags (sandwich to grocery to garbage), 2 small boxes of nails, handsaw, a pocket chainsaw, 2 hand towels and 1 bath towel. The pack currently weighs 43 pounds, with food (3-5 days) but not water. I know from some practice last summer that I can cover nearly 37 km in about 8 hours, on foot, with 3 breaks. I then have about 5-7 hours of daylight to find and establish camp for the night. Not that I've practiced or anything.

With how horror movies influence how we think:
I remember I was once going to visit my friend on the 4th floor of a block of flats. The lift was old and this particular night the lights in it were flickering in a way that was...ominous. After very nearly taking the stairs I thought to myself "Don't be stupid" and took the lift.
Halfway up the lights just outright failed for a good ten seconds and my first thought was "I'm going to die, and I deserve it - I'm literally that guy you see in a horror film where you're screaming 'Why would you get into the creepy af murder lift you moron?!' as they dismiss the several clear indicators that they're not safe". The lights came back on and I got to the 4th floor without any incident or supernatural warning signs, but the next time the lights were flickering I took the stairs - I refuse be that guy who miraculously escapes notice the first time and then decides to wander back in wearing a "murder me" sign.

9mm pistol, because it’s concealable and a very common caliber, should be able to find ammunition readily. You just gonna need it. Machete, very useful for building shelters/self defense/butchering. Tarp; it’s waterproof. Good for collecting rain or building shelter. Bic lighter. Can be used until it runs out of butane then use the sparker to start fires with dry tinder or small amounts of gasoline. Extra clothes. Comfort is important. Having an extra coat, dry socks, etc. is gonna improve your mood and help you feel more comfortable. Fishing equipment. You can get miniature collapsible rods that will fit in small backpack pockets. Then you have a renewable food source. Should include basic tackle and perhaps an extra reel. Also provides entertainment. Blanket is a good choice, something light but warm. Preferably somewhat waterproof. Crank flashlight is also a good call. Pocket knife is good too, great for skinning animals or wittling a spear. Extra glasses if you wear them. Basic medical things, tweezers, band aids, disinfectant, gauze, tape, etc. I’d recommend a couple rolls of electrical tape too, it’s smaller than duct tape rolls and in many cases just as strong if not more since you can stretch it somewhat for tighter bonds. It’s something small but very useful for lots of things. Multitool is good. Gloves are good. Little camp cooking kit. Usually has a couple different sized pots and pans that fit together and includes silverware.

Food grade plastic bags and a roll of large trash bags would also be recommended for keeping things dry in wet areas and for storage. Last it would be good to have a small hand axe for crafting things from wood and cutting off branches from trees.

Edit: Also have some cash on you.

I love all the tips from former military people. I'd like to know what Emily's bag's "base weight" is, because you don't want your bag to be too heavy to carry.

You should add some cotton balls soaked in petroleum jelly. Easy fire starters for use with a flint. Store them in a freezer bag they take very little room in your kit.

My mom got me a special multipurpose tool for my car. It's mostly a hand powered light but can also be used to cut and break things if needed.

I always find it funny that people try to stach foods first: we can get around without food for nearly a month…but without water something around 7 days. In case of a zombie attack the public water supply will surely break down quickly but definitely after the electricity breaks down…so you should stack water in bottles first and food after 😁

More than anything, even if there ends up being no zombie or robot apocalypse, having a bug out kit and/or emergency kit are vital in most situations
Where I live, we get power outages, floods & bad snowstorms. I keep a pair of bags because it's not a case of if but when they will be needed. It's a peace of mind. It conveniently doubles for outdoors stuff too so thats fun
Everyone should know stuff like this as well as first aid, self defense and how to prepare their own food and such. Life skills like those are never a waste of time

My bag would consist of all the same things. Although I would add chemlights. they are easy to store and they are very bright, just in case something happens to your flash light. batteries triple A and Double A. it would be good have them in stock. hygiene products, like soap. toothpaste and brush, floss etc. a power bank charger for my phone and some kind of weapon

you should put the sneakers into the bag last. they're the first thing you might need to get to ...
you might want to actually put them in the trunk of your car instead of the bag. rummaging through the bag to get to the shoes costs valuable time.
