    Fun fact: the pronounciation of A-Qing is the same as the sound for sneezing in Brazilian Portuguese, so my instinct when you said her name was to say “bless you”

    I have fallen hard into the realm of MDSZ recently and it’s quickly become my main obsession. This was really helpful, especially while reading the novel! Thanks so much, subscribed!

    This was not only very helpful but extremely interesting!! Learning about culture and history is super interesting for me! It was also super wonderful to hear every major character and place being pronounced correctly! I still don't hear the difference in tones, but i don't hear them in my everyday life so im asuming it would come with time and practice! Wang Yibo being the adorable gremlin he is was such a cute lil added thing. Thank you May Anne!!

    Bookmarking this for later because I know I’ll forget, but thank you so much for making this! I always stress about pronouncing names incorrectly and finding out later. I watched the series first so I had a general idea about how they sounded but having it slowed down so I could listen and take in the tones is great! I found it helpful to mimic the accents on the letters with my hands so I could remember the tonal sounds not just mentally but visually too.

    Omg, I was SO off for Lan Si Zhui! I was at least close for most of them (save for the Nie clan, who are the reason I came looking for a pronunciation guide), but didn't expect to be so off on LSZ.

    I always wondered why most people called Jin Ling by his birth name and not his courtesy name.

    • @MayAnne
      @MayAnne  3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Most of them are older and related in some way, hence 'uncles' so they call him 'Jinling'. And because he is the direct heir to the Jin Sect, and also not pals (yet) with others from his generation, like Sizhui and Jingyi, they call him "gong zi" 😊

    Thank you so much for this! I took Japanese as my minor in college and have gotten so comfortable with that language, but mzds is my introduction to having to pronounce mandarin and it is giving me so much trouble! This video is going to be playing on repeat 😅
    I do have a small question, just for clarification (if you have time). I just started watching the Untamed tonight and noticed that when they say Wen Ning, there's almost a dipthong sound on the "Ning" and it sounds (to my very confused ears) almost like "nyung." When you say it, it sounds like i expected it to based in what I'm trying to read about pronouncing pinyin romanization. Is the show pronouncing it differently or am i just overwhelmed and hearing things incorrectly?

    • @MayAnne
      @MayAnne  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for commenting!
      Yes, some of the characters definitely say 'Wen Niyng' with a slight glide. I am not an expert but I think that is 'standard' Mandarin pronunciation in mainland China or a variant. The Mandarin I speak is quite different, much flatter in tone. In fact, when making this video, I pronounced some things totally out of character for me. For example Wei Wuxian's 'Xian' to me starts with a straightforward /s/ but in The Untamed it is 'Shee-yen' so I tried that. If you listen carefully, you will hear how awkward I am there 🤣

    Thanks for this. My pronunciation has gone to crap over the years, not that it was ever great, to begin with. I've read the fan translation and am now reading the official translations as they're released, but there are a lot of phrases I'd prefer to learn how to read/pronounce in the original Chinese. I swear I first watched a version of Untamed that had pretty decent subtitles, but trying to rewatch now the only English subs I can find are just awful. They make no sense.
    I haven't looked around, yet but where can I find the books in Mandarin? I heard parts have been changed a few times already, but not always for the best. Would the Taiwan printing be different (better) than the mainland printing?

    • @MayAnne
      @MayAnne  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the best subtitles are either on Viki or Netflix. Not perfect but acceptable.
      The mainland Chinese MDZS is no longer available so if you find copies on sale, they are very likely to be bootlegs. So proceed with caution 😂. The Taiwanese version is still available for sale. It's in traditional Chinese. I can't keep track of the versions and changes but it should be the most complete version available.
      Thanks for dropping by and watching my video ☺️

    Is Xi pronounced "si" not "shi"? (I wasn't sure what you said in the video)

    • @MayAnne
      @MayAnne  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It depends as both can be used. If you speak with a mainland China "standard" accent then it is more like "shi". But for Mandarin speakers from Malaysia, Singapore and some other places, we use "si". So while someone from China would say "Way Oo Shien", I would say "Way Oo Sien".
      You have a good ear! I was struggling with which one to use in the video so it was somewhere in between. But both would be understandable to other Mandarin speakers.
