Great project! When designing the robotic arm in SolidWorks (and later simulating it) do you account for the motors - i.e: Where they will be positioned when you physically print the robot parts or do you leave it out?
Search in the internet for open surce designs will aid you to design your one. In this design the upper motors hiden because the motor has space to amount in side the printer part . Wish for you the best my friend

Robotics learn how to calculate farward and inverse kinamatics and matlab or labview to control the motors via microcontroller such as arduino. You can make the robot and control it with joystick with out need to learn robotics kinamatics calculations.

How many kgs of filament required to print arm
Depends on the infill setting. I think in 20% infill less than 2kg
