Indeed he was a very, very talented troubled soul .... who drank himself into despair then utterly alone, shot himself. I would not raise a glass of beer in his honor, rather he might rest in peace if one person listening to his song found the courage to turn away from alcohol, drugs that cut Doug's life short and instead took the path to sobriety in his name. RIP

That dude wrote their whole legendary first album, pretty much. I think they DID HIM WRONG by firing him the way they did. They could have come up with a compromise I imagine (and I'm not even personally nor remotely involved in that situation at all in any way sense or form...YET I KNOW WHAT IT'S LIKE FOR SOMEONE TO PULL UP ON THEIR HIGH HORSE and pretend that the drug intervention show is the way to go!..NOPE... It kills people literally like Doug, and it kills other people who have not died yet... NEVER TALKING TO THE SIBLINGS OF MY FAMILY AGAIN... THOSE OVER USING HYPOCRITES THEMSELVES JUST TRYING TO GET A SLICE OF THE WILL OR WHATEVER THEIR MOTIVE WAS OUT OF THEIR OWN LITTLE SELF-ESTEEM!!)

Yeah, and so does getting fucked over by your so-called bandmate-friends. They drove him to it. I don't know if you know the story, but they were recording their first album .... he had a problem with drinking at the time, so they put him on a plane and sent him home. He found out later he'd been fired (I don't know if he was even told by them). Then, these bastards make it big on the songs HE FUCKING WROTE!!! They made MILLIONS. And what did they do? Cut him some ridiculous check for $1,500 or something like that. NO WONDER HE KILLED HIMSELF ... WITH "FRIENDS" LIKE THAT .... those bastards. I hope you can sleep at night .... ROBIN.

It's interesting that when New Miserable Experience came out, this song and a few others had actually been around for awhile. As I recall, NME had a long trip up the charts. The version in this video omits the "Maybe I could use you" stanza.

Nobody seems to mention Jesse's wonderful vocal harmonies in comments of Gin Blossom's videos, or really gives Robin as much credit as he deserves, it takes a special lead vocal to "sell" even the best song. All credit to Doug for his great songs but does the band go anywhere without one of smoothest rock lead vocalists we've ever heard ? A little bit like Roger McGuinn but no twang, just straight, smooth, and expressive, unique.

I thought he did okay here, but yes, I hear what you mean. Particularly in the first chorus, when he sings "Drink enough of anything", he tightens his throat and pushes way to hard for the top "Drink" and "enough" notes. I think he realizes this, too, because right after that note, he makes a concerted effort to relax his voice.

+MrShane82 Sorry I will disappoint you with this answer, but this performance happended to be part of an awards show on MTV, ages ago, and it is probably the only live clip I have, aside from the one I already posted, performing with KISS many years later. I cannot be sure of this, but if they were shown on the early 120 Minutes program, as an alternative act, then there is a web archive that you can search, and perhaps get lucky to track down some other video clips, or interviews. That archive was mentioned recently on the Dangerous Minds website [search for it, and then search again for 120 Minutes]. Sorry I cannot be of more help than that, but a lot on my plate at the moment ;) Thanks for the nod of appreciation for posting the live clip, and happy it is making many, like yourself, really happy!

Man Doug gets a lot of props in the comments for being a very standard guitarist in this video. Funny how tragic death does that.

Well, he was responsible for writing some of their best known hits. I'm sure his death plays some part in his recognition, but I think it's well deserved nonetheless.

Doug Hopkins was freakin amazing. Does anyone know if it's true he once passed out drunk in a bar while dressed like a slice of pizza (for a job)? I thought I read it somewhere. Anyway, I love this video. Thanks to the person who posted it. This is one of my favorite videos featuring Doug (the other is of him singing theme songs like "Scooby Doo").
