A great band with a tragic story. They could have been so much more if not for drugs and alcohol. Depression takes a toll! RIP Doug Hopkins, you were the heartbeat of this band. Without your talented song writing abilities new Miserable Experience would have been a completely different recording. Hopikns credits: ( Found Out About You - Hey Jealousy - Lost Horizons - Hold me Down - Pieces Of The Night - Cheatin' )
He's actually signalling the control room to turn up his mic, lol. He pointed to his ear then up saying "I can't hear myself, turn it up". Doug hopkins was a brilliant song writer.
He was signaling that his on stage monitor needed turned up....He possibly couldn't hear the band as well as his voice. Some singers want to hear themselves but others want to have the music mix in their monitor.
Probably his monitor. His ear not the house. Notice once the level goes up, he can hear himself and gets in tune with band. And yes, Doug was a master. So sad and sick what happened to him.
Doug's story is a tragic one that is all too common. Depression and alcoholism. They're still very talented and worth seeing live. They tour to this day and I've seen them 3 times over the last 15 yrs or so. Which is long after Doug was gone. RIP brother
I think your a fan of them having seen them 7 times which is awesome! Gin Blossoms would have been successful with or without Doug...though he got them there sooner. I've heard Robin acknowledge him in several interviews. The thing Robin denies most is that they ripped him off by paying him ONLY his royalties.
patrick dixon While I appreciate the talent of all the other guys (undeniable; Robin with a spectacular voice, Jesse a great guitar player with a great look, and then there's Bill Leen) I don't think they would have ever gotten a deal without the songs Doug was writing. The lyrics were what separated them from the myriad of other bands at the time. And I do realize the others wrote some great songs as well. I'm really not trying to downplay what they brought to the table, I just feel that Doug was the X-factor that sent them on their way. My 2 cents.
It's 2020! Tell me who's listening Gin Blossoms here...
Me.
Me
Me aussi.
Just saw them live last month!
This love is real!
So, so good. What an underrated band. NME was great stuff, start to finish.

Wow I never knew how good they sound live. Always loved them !!
Kick ass way to start a live show. All energy. Perfect song opener. Even with the levels all peaking out!

You can tell they were loud that night!

Wow - good!
I've seen them 7 times and never heard anyone acknowledge Doug Hopkins. Sad. Black eye on Robin mostly.
I've seen them live several times and Robin did acknowledge him. On his writing of "pieces of the night"...it's on youtube I will try to find for you.

@@TR-yi8up Doug Hopkins was on par with Paul Westerberg as a song writer.
@@operationmobocracy won’t get any argument there from me, and Paul is in my top couple contemporary writers as well
Robin my idol
