- From the moment she first began appearing at the side of John F. Kennedy Jr., Carolyn Bessette, a fashion industry publicist, became one of the most photographed women in the world. Correspondent Erin Moriarty talks with Sunita Kumar Nair, author of "CBK: Carolyn Bessette Kennedy: A Life in Fashion," and with Washington Post columnist Robin Givhan, about the impact that Bessette's personal style continues to have 25 years following her death.

Not to take anything away from CBK’s fashionable style but much of her foundational style came before her. Audrey Hepburn is just one example of a sleek simple clothing trend setter.
Jackie Kennedy-Onassis also had it...classy, understated tailored
So true
Marlena Dietrich also wore the 1st tuxedo, back in the 30's.
CBK was classic style. Simple. Elegant.
25 years already? 😢🙏🏻
She felt no need to be ostentatious/overdressed. Everything, including jewelry, was understated.
The saddest thing is that CBK’s sister, Lauren Bessette, who also perished in that plane crash, is hardly ever mentioned in connection with this tragic event. It’s almost like to the media and the consumers of this story as if she didn’t matter or never existed.
I am a consumer of this story and there is no “almost like” or “as if” in my consumption.
What is the public interest in an unknown person? Of course the public is interested in the good we know as celebrities.
Not only did John F. Kennedy Jr. not even make it to 40 years of age but Ann Freeman lost two daughters that day.
That’s what Jane Pauley should really be reporting.
@@SoGorgeous-ju8jn His overconfidence in his abilities proved costly...
less is more! so elegant!!
I still think the biggest loss was for the parents of the Bessette girls, forgive me but he was not an experienced pilot to undertake a risky flight under a storm at night ,it cost them their lives, and we also need to remember she was not very happy those days ,a very tragic end for all three of them but most of all for the Bessette family !
There wasn’t a storm that night. It’s also doubtful that JFK forced either girl to fly with him.
even though I wasn’t born yet, I can’t imagine being a parent losing both of their daughters on the same day in a tragic way 😢
Devastating.
my dad died the same day. I will never forget.
I'm so sorry.
To the public, she will always be remembered as young and beautiful. Never got the opportunity to grow older and live life to the fullest.
Her style was part Michael Kors/Marc Jacob’s still stylish today. ❤
Narcissico Rodriquez
Kind of easy to become a style icon when you work for Calvin Klein. She had access to everything elegant at all times, and probably saw it before it hit the runway.
And married to a Kennedy.
And JFK Jr the prize.@@ttimgents
Agreed and she placed herself in that store because her main goal in life was to marry a rich man
@@creolelady182Ouch 😝
She wasn't that pretty to begin with
Can’t believe it’s been 25 years
The truth is, unlike her husband, there’s precious little we actually know actually about Carolyn. All that remains is the quiet and tasteful comments she made through the camera lens with the power of her style. Like many political figures gone before her, sometimes the only way to speak honestly and openly without saying a word was through their wardrobe. I sincerely wish nothing but peace for the Bessette family who lost their two daughters that fateful day.
I can’t believe it’s been 25 years; so sad. May they all continue to rest in peace. 😢🙏🏼
I thought Princess Diana was the most photographed woman in the world.
For real. I don't remember seeing any photos or magazine covers of Bessette unless she was with John. John was the focus not her.
I would agree. Perhaps in the NY she was the most photographed.
Yes, Diana was. When she died the jfk coverage intensified
Agree ! Princess Diana is the most photographed and rightfully so. We here in the USA were trying to have our own version of “ royalty “ with JFK Jr and CBK . Diana and CBK were miles apart and there is no comparison. Sorry to say and I’m an American.
It's as though some of Carolyn's style was similar as Jackie O's. Also, it's as if John's wife's footsteps in life were similar to Jackie's 💓 May they All be together 'n RIP ☮️🌅✝️
It seems utterly strange in retrospect; but, as very young girl in the 90s, Carolyn Bessette Kennedy's style was my ideal and everything I aspired to manifest in my own wardrobe. I was in the fourth grade when my beloved late Mother allowed me to select my own clothing for the first time at the local Dillard's Department Store. It was the Spring of 1999 and I was ten years old. I thought of Carolyn as I grabbed the many all black ensembles (much to my Mother's chagrin) and my idea of chic minimalism (which the other children at school ridiculed me for..."Are you trying to be a witch?!" one particularly catty girl asked). It was mere months before that fateful plane crash. That summer, as the news broke, I was quite disheartened. Even as a little girl, I was captivated, wholeheartedly, by the Kennedy mystique. Carolyn had often been featured in supermarket magazines, which were my window into her beauty and style back then, as the internet was still truly, rather primitive. I have held her style in the highest regard nearly all my Life...although, now, as an adult woman, no longer an all-Black wearing child that took myself SO seriously, my taste veers more toward the Jacqueline Kennedy prim & proper elegance. I recently picked up a copy of the Carolyn Bessette biography, Once Upon a Time by Elizabeth Beller, and I am intrigued by the enduring levels at which I have been enthralled with Carolyn over the years. 🖤
Hard to believe it has been 25 yrs. I remember like it was yesterday where I was when I heard. Such a tragic family and this poor woman was caught up in it…RIP what style, like his mom she had. Beautiful simple wedding dress.
She thought she won the lottery with marriage to a Kennedy but she actually sealed her doomed fate.
I don’t think she thought she won the lottery with John. She didn’t chase him. If anything he chased her.
@@ann5765 She played hard to get.
John was a big star RIP
She was a classic beauty and she knew what looked good on her. This was so sad and I remember that day like it just happened. John made such a foolish decision to fly under those conditions. It's too bad that she had to live her last days hounded by the paparazzi.
I was young and, at the time sick, when the network news interupted what was on to say that the plane was missing. They were going to the Kennedy compound, I think for a wedding. Elizabeth Vargas was clearly very shaken as she reported on their death when the worst was realized. Such a sad day and so much potential gone in an instant. He might have run for President and many saw the launch of his magazine a prelude to that. RIP.
July 16, 1999.
She was not an unwilling subject: she worked PR at CK. She knew what she was doing.
I don’t think anyone has ever had style as beautiful as Jackie, John Jr.’s mom.
She represent classic 90's style - her looks were always minimalist chic and effortless - the way style should be - a simple coat a pair of jeans a white shirt sunglasses - she knew what she was doing and she had great style- it is a shame they did not live - It would have been amazing to see them have children together
A remarkable amount of negative comments for seemingly no reason
Her gut told her not to fly with an inexperienced pilot. Always follow your gut!
So sorry they’re both gone.
But as far as fashion?
White button down shirts and long gloves are hardly “ground breaking.”
Agreed. This story is nothing more than a paid advertisement for a book. She was no 'style icon.' I'm not being mean about her as a person, but rather that this 'story' is being fabricated for book sales. Embarassing!
I remember when they got married. My dad had been transferred to Georgia and remember thinking how wonderful they chose Georgia for their wedding day. They both deserved to be happy
If he had never flown that plane, they would still be alive today. He was warned against flying. He didn't listen.
True. He was not an intelligent man. But had great looks.
Multiple factors played into his crash. He left his office a couple of hours later than he should have-meaning instead of flying with the help of daylight (even if he was flying during sunset), he would eventually be flying in pure darkness. Instead of flying along the coast the entire time to maintain some sort of visual he decided to cut across the water to Martha’s Vineyard. He also didn’t have as much training with IFR. Some people suspected that since he was recovering from a foot injury, perhaps that hindered his control of the plane. I have never heard that someone warned him per say and idk what they would be warning him about- what? Some haze? Weather changes all of the time.
It’s sad all around because I’m sure none of us would want to go out like that-falling out of the sky in complete darkness
He also refused the flight instructor that offered to go with them. Not much common sense in that family. @@brooklynbutter5357
CBK never wanted this type of focus and publicity. I would think this book would be counter to what she'd want published and publicized.
one of the many reasons why i despise trends
I was camping with my son and his Boy Scout troop, when it happened. When we were packing up to go home, we learned what had happened. I was shocked and dismayed at the idea they both could be dead, as I was the day JFK, Sr. was assassinated. Now, Caroline is the only one left of Camelot. Both seem like they were just here along with how long they've been gone. May their memory be cherished and they be resting in peace.
She knew JFK’s microscopic life she was marrying into.
I never wear mascara ... because she didn't XO, Kelly
Basically preppy J Crew...
She was exactly what Jackie would have wanted for her son, & Jackie could have helped her when it came to dealing with the vultures who were trying to live vicariously through her rather than to just get a life of their own. Because of them, we never got to see the REAL Caroline that we would have loved even more. Such a loss, all three of them, gone far too soon.
Jackie was not a nice woman like that
Loved CBK. Classy lady.
she was late to her wedding, they fought all the time over her drug lifestyle etc, she was having an affair with a male model almost the whole time she was married...he was staying in a hotel when they hot headedly went on that trip. so many things went wrong rather than right.
Carolyn wore what other chic and professional women wore without being showy.
How is this a story? It’s been 25 years, let it go
❤
Her style was simple and elegant, but hardly original. She basically went for the basics, but in a classy & expensive way. It helps enormously to be tall and thin like a model - pretty much a garbage bag cinched at the waist would look chic on Carolyn
The lady said it perfectly, they are forever young. To know that they would be in their late 50's today is even hard to imagine. Remembered the day it was announced they were found, believe it was July 15th 1999 - was at a youth group meeting at church and I broke news. Everyone felt so sad about it. I believe JFK Jr would likely have gone on to run for office had he lived. I sometimes contemplate when though and looking at the state of politics today in America, he would have been the perfect candidate for the Democratic party.
John was born in November 1960. He would be 63 today, not in his 50s.
@@carolyncarter2615 #misinformation he was 38.
Sad indeed. CBS played it safe with this narrow story line.
The Patrician look.

What are soft disclosures?
A woman who despised any publicity for herself becomes famous for fashion she displayed in her private moments. A woman who eschewed the limelight now celebrated as an icon. When will she be left alone, as she wanted? Yes she was married to a famous person but she didn’t want that fame for herself. We all remember how voracious the media and paparazzi were in the 90’s and here we are continuing that cycle with social media.
She would not have wanted this.
Agree. Every time i see these videos I'm like let this woman rest in peace.
Then she shouldn’t have married a famous person. She could have stayed with that male model no one cared about instead of walking around like a gloomy Gus!
Really! With all the terrible things happening, we need to still bug this person’s memory?
she loved white t shirts and jeans and coats. what an icon. gimme a break. this is a joke.
What legacy? If she didn't like the attention, she should have never married JFK, Jr. What did she think would happen. Everyone would leave her alone once she was a Kennedy, albeit by marriage.
John & Daryl Hannah were on/off , Jackie O dislike her...I like Daryl...
My brother met Daryl on a plane. He said she was very nice and they did coke together! Never found out if it was one the plane or later on. This was in the 90's before he sobered up.
Beautiful, white , blond woman. Most people want to look like her. A fact.
Her style was one thing, but to assume the whole world wants her face or hair is hilarious 🤣
And skinny!
Such a beauty ❤❤❤❤
That simple dress .. cost $40,000. For her though.. iit was a gift from the designer. She was so lovely but the paparazzi beat her down. To get pictures of her they would call her a w**** and a c*nt because the sad pictures or the angry pictures of her sold for more money.
Life is short. I hope they knew the Lord before they died.
Please keep your bible- thumpin' nonsense to yourself.
Both were raised Catholic.
@@Jennifer-my5dm being raised Catholic means nothing. You have to accept Jesus into your heart and live for Him
@@joyceanthony-huff2914 Catholics were among the first Christians.
@@Jennifer-my5dm just because you're a Catholic does not mean you have Jesus in your heart and your living for him. There are many Catholics and protestants that are not going to heaven because they have not committed their lives to following Jesus.

She also had a drug problem
A beautiful woman surely, but would the public have cared so much if she WASN’T slim, pretty, stylish, with gorgeous long blonde hair?? …….The shallowness of this world is PALPABLE. 🤷🏼♂️🤔
True. Beautiful blond, white woman. I would love to look like her.

Most Americans are done with the Kennedy's but still love Sunday morning 🌄
You gotta be skinny
Move on. Give these people a rest.
I've spoken to pilots; John Jr. probably crashed on purpose. Two safe paths he could've taken to the wedding, Carolyn hanging out with druggy boyfriends again, magazine failing, presidential expectations, broken leg, no instrument reading skills, had had enough. We landed in Paris right after the crash that summer and the Paris Match covers all read 'La Reve Brise,' (the Broken Dream'). Nuff said. RIP.
I spoke to one of the persons in charge of the crash investigation. That is absolutely false and ridiculous.
Oh, please....
Nonsense. You think because you’ve “spoken to pilots” that John “probably crashed on purpose?” What a ridiculous comment.
No way, it's not the purpose cuz John never experienced flying at night, just the day but blame Carolyn's sister was late as they were waiting for her but her mother sued John's sister unfairly. Not right!!🤨
Why are we talking about her? She wasn’t that beautiful, a difficult person and she ‘s been dead for nearly 25 years.
She was hardly a style icon! This is laughable!
Overrated
Who
Cares
I totally agree. Both were troubled beings...
The Kennedys are very special. They represent Camelot.
I don't believe anybody thinks of Bessette when it comes to fashion or style, these people are just trying to make something out of what was never really there. Find something real to celebrate her for if you must.
Sadness Spending thousands at barneys? Please CBK was not a nice girl.
Wow, you knew her? I'm interested in knowing your story?
Neither was Jackie Kennedy
Thwt is so sad.
Not sure theirs was such an enduring love story. According to those who knew the couple Carolyn was not very nice to John and had a very bad drug habit that had made her husband's life hell.
View with great skepticism salacious books published in the years after her death. Libel is not actionable when the subject matter is dead. Authors like C. David Heymann fabricate quotes, storylines, and invent people for their books. Her close friends vehemently disputed these defamatory drug claims by these authors, and she wasn't here to defend herself.
And she was having an affair with a model. Who then later, slimy as he was, wrote an entire book about it.
