i was going into the comment section to comment that! to be fair, after using clip studio for two years i only just recently discovered the ruler tool, so i'm not surprised she couldn't find it/didn't use it.
I love Clip Studio so much. In additon to being WAY cheaper and more intuitive to use than photoshop, it's also made with illustrators in mind as its target audience. Photoshop is not, it's for photographers. Oh yeah, and Clip Studio is SOOOOO much lighter on your computer, so now you don't need a really powerful computer with tons of memory just to draw. This is great for those of us on a tight budget with cheap laptops
Idk if you knew it but proffessional artist in companies use photoshop becase it's compatible on mac, windows (idk linux but i guess too) and is one of the reference of art program (I've tried doing some photoshop pic" at school, that was fun and easy tho) however, i'll try clip studio paint in the futur to get an opinion on it for illustration/concept art (and kirita too for animation)
@@lakuronekobaka3951 Just because photoshop has long been an industry standard doesn't mean it always will be, especially when better programs come along that allow artists to work more comfortably and get better results. Larger game and animation companies in particular have ways of changing workflows and building custom software to allow them to use newer tools and programs that they like more. Photoshop is standard...except when it isn't. Besides that I kinda don't care if photoshop is standard, I don't do art for companies and have no plans to, I draw for people who buy from me directly.
something very useful for beginners is the 3D model. You can pose it completely and you basically just trace it. It even gives you a basic understanding of shadow and light. For a beginner artist like me it's very useful for learning anatomy and posing.
@Viktor with a K Now, is that coming from an ex Photoshop user, or just someone with an idea of what Photoshop can do? For people who have used a program for years, it becomes difficult to transition to a new program. However, for someone who isn't already accustomed to any particular program, learning the ins and outs of a new one isn't nearly as bad.
This. I've pirated Photoshop since their subscription model and now it seems I'm gonna be moving to CSP. Adobe is really great at isolating parts of their customer base. :3
I don't know if anyone has mentioned it before, but there's a ruler option that lets you draw dynamic straight lines! I suggest you play around with the different rulers and see which one suits you the best
5 ปีที่แล้ว +9
theres a lot of tools, like the line art tool that also makes straight lines lol or the already done sheets of comics!
@ Absolutely! But she mentioned that she wanted more dynamic lines, which you cannot achieve through those methods, to my knowledge at least so please correct me if I'm wrong :)
5 ปีที่แล้ว +1
@@moccadam2 well i have the full verison, idk if the demo lets you but the full one lets you create sheets, edit or dowload tools edit the entire canvas. tough, the straight line in PSD is unique cuz you have the " brush" texture over it (but i can make a straight line in my CSP as an vector line)
La Moi a The “brush” texture and the way it’s not perfectly the same line is usually what people mean by a dynamic line. It’s more personalised and feels less “same”?
Pro and Ex are essentially the same. The two differences are: -Some "story" options that allow you to keep pages on one file instead of having a file for each page. - Allows you to make animations longer than 24 frames.
@@mirityashaolu8391 Download and buy online! Essentially, what you buy is your key to be able to use the program freely. Basically, 1) Download the demo. 2) Buy the key. 3) When you get your email with the key, input the key where the demo asks for it.
J 12g so basically it’s whenever you use the fill tool you can select how much color you want to be selected. it’s hard to explain but it’s super cool!
I used to use Manga Studio 5. I had to stop a long time ago because of tablet and laptop problems. I can’t wait to get back in, especially with the new features that come with Clip!
I just got an ad from clip studio and theres a WIERD ASS BRUSH or smt. It like, blends the colors you want to use...and it just makes evveerrything more simple. I have clip studio paint but idk how to get there, welp. Clip studio paint is 👌 tho
RawGreen It’s still pretty customizable, brush type, mixing, etc. I think it’s worth transferring brushes over so you can mess around and have more fun with it.
For those wanting Clip Studio Paint EX, they have MANY sales, so if you are able to hold off for sales, there is a possibility to get this cheaper. I got EX for $60 ish
@@ianmacdraws3326 ah, it's too bad pro isn't good enough for me, since it's cheaper. But I do love that it's a one time payment, and there are so many free materials to download.
I know it has less features I went ahead and picked up pro when it went on sale for $15 can't go wrong with a bargain like that. EX does have some nice features though.
I've been using Clip Studio Paint for several years now on my comic, having switched over from Photoshop years ago. I'm fully sold on CSP for all art projects besides photo manipulation or pixel art. It draws better, it paints better, and it ESPECIALLY inks better. Plus there are nice comic-specific functions that Photoshop simply doesn't have. Clip Studio Paint is the program of choice for me even when I'm just making character art and paintings. Thanks for the good video. I came to all the same conclusions you did, and years later I find myself wishing Photoshop would adopt certain features CSP has, like being able to quickly flip the entire canvas horizontally to check your balance.
Yes it takes some getting used to especially if you're a beginner like me (I'm really good but its also trash, ya get it?) So for shading go in the color wheel and just move the dot over the color it *was* on a bit down depending on how heavy it is
Update for people watching this video. As of August 2022, Clip Studio Paint has announced a switch to a subscription based service starting with version 2.0. If you bought the program, you will no longer get updates after the last 1.xx update unless you switch to the subscription. Subscription price isn't known yet. Support for 1.xx will also stop once CSP 3.x is launched, when that is is unknown. Edit as of the 29th of October, 2022: CSP seems to have gone back on this decision, as on their website they state that both CSP 2 and CSP 3 will be available for one-time purchase. But remember, if they think they can get away with changing to a subscription model, they will do it. Do not ever let them, just as community outcry caused them to change it back this time.
Whenever people talk about this they conveniently forget to mention that a perpetual license is still available for purchase. The subscription is only for updates of a new major release. If you want the updates for 2.x wait till 3.x drops and get the license for that. I highly doubt that there will be any game changing updates going forward that make you go "damn I NEED that", even 1.x as it is is probably enough for the majority of users. Don't get me wrong, I am definitely no fan of subscriptions and I'd really wish CSP would be more transparent about why this choice was made but comparing this to whatever the hell Adobe is doing isn't really the way to go. They are in no way the same. CSP will NOT be subscription based. The updates are the only thing that will be locked behind a subscription model and we are most likely talking about updates that most users won't urgently need. I feel like people are making a way bigger deal out of this than it has to be.
@@kitthedemon Nope that simply means 1.xx won't get any sorts of updates or compatibility fixes anymore. You will still be able to use it just like before there's just the possibility that it stops working one day due to being outdated. But it's gonna be a looong time till that happens.
@@dayuchuu My understanding is that the subscription is only going to be in 2.xx, it will be a one time payment in 3.xx. That's just what I understand, at least.
I know a billion people probably already gave you this tip, but for your lineart! If you make your panels on a vector layer (the layer button with a small box next to the normal layer button) there's a "change vector width" tool that you can use to change the width of your lines and give it more character. That said, you can also use the ruler tools called "Linear Ruler" and even "Ruler pen" to laydown guides for your panels, then go over those lines with your pen and it'll trace the rulers exactly, with the texter of your pen and your widths!
.....in photoshop and other more expensive programs...or just other free program at least has layers so I dont know if I get what you mean. Are you getting MS paint mixed up with like...Clip Studio, maybe...?
my mind has just been blown. I used manga studio 4 a LOT back in the day before i switched to photoshop cc. now i've been seeing clip studio paint everywhere and i had no idea it was the successor
clip studio paint takes a bit of getting used to because there are so many tools, but i totally got comfy with it within a week of regular use! one of the only problems i found is you have to rasterize text before you can rotate it and such, which is a bit of a pain. on the plus side they recently updated the animation features to include audio and camera movements so that's rly great 👀 Anyway, it's super cool to see one of my fav artists trying out the program!! definitely do some more exploring, there's a lot more to CSP than we all think at first tbh.
If you want to do straight lines with pressure differences you should use the ruler first, and then you draw in the ruler lines that you created :) You can download a lot of content too. Brushes, and much more.(Really easy and inside the program) For comics Clip Studio is leader i think. Photoshop it's great for a lot of things, for sure if you want to make complex image composition and editing it's better, but they need to put more attention to the illustration side.
There is also the post correction, at maximum it make every line perfectly strait ... Even a circle. I use this tool when I need multiple lines in many angles done fast.
1 Tip for Clip Studio Paint (EX) If you click on the eyedropper function, there is a sub tool labeled "adjust line width". You can then adjust the amount of width you'd like to thicken or thin your lines with after you have clicked on "adjust line width". Then you can go over the lines and it changes the width, although some erasing is needed to make it look smooth. I'm new to this program as well, so that's all I know for now, but I'll edit if I find any more tips I think are helpful.
Hi! An avid Clip Studio Paint user here... A good thing about CSP is that you can import brushes that the community has made. I didn't like the default brushes either (way too smooth lol) so when you click on the icon and the whole "what do you wanna do"-stuff comes on you can click on the community icon(I think?) and *swoop* you can just easily download really beautiful brushes with lotsa texture and weight! Thought I'd mention it if you wanted to keep using the program! Keep on being great!
Random Digital Drawing Question: I've been having some trouble with making lineart for my pieces, mostly since any brush I try seems to lose opacity at lower pressures and doesn't really feel like it flows well, plus the pressure never seems even and can bulge at times (That may just be me, but I can't really tell as of now). So should I consider looking for a better brush to use for this, or are there settings I can tick off to make things more comfortable? And if a certain brush is better, anyone have any recommendations? Thank you all, thank you each! And assuming you haven't finished the video yet, thank you for lending me your time.
set the pen pressure sensitivity lower for the bulging issue and for the density issue make sure the box where it says something like pen pressure affect density isnt clicked (this on CSP tho, idk about other programs)
If you don't mind other people's input, I would honestly say, test different pens/brushes just because you might end up finding another you like that works better for you. But as for losing opacity at lower pressures, check the settings of the pen. I know in CSP you can set opacity to get lighter when you apply less pressure, so make sure you have it turned off on the pen you're using. If you aren't using CSP, just double check the settings, it doesn't hurt, maybe you'll learn something new about the pen you've been using. (I recently learned that stabilization is why my lines are smoother on some pens than others.) Also, I wouldn't say a certain brush is better because different brushes work better for different people and they style they draw in. :D
I use Procreate to make my comic, mainly because I prefer to draw on my IPad than on a computer. I love the program but it really is meant more for illustration work than comics. My friend just recently recommended Clip Studio to me and I wasn't sure if I was going to get it, but when you made this video I thought that I should definitely get this program!
Julius productions hi I use MediBang if you use windows having windows ink enabled can mess with the settings I turn mine off when I use the app through my tablet driver so you could try that
Another thing that i love about Clip studio are all the asset goodies that artists posts on the Clip studio asset website sure some of them are pricey but majority are free to download and are just amazing, it's like a candystore for artists
I've just started work on a comic and currently use Krita. I love drawing in it and use the program all the time, and it's pretty decent for comics, too! A friend of mine also uses Krita and his comic looks phenomenal. But as much as I love Krita, you've made me want to give Clip Studio a try at some point!
I've watched a video of Jazza where he compared some cheap or free programs. I suggest you to check it out! I think you can switch on to Krita. It's free but one of the best.
Sorry im a bit late to this comment, but if you're still using firealpaca then I'd suggest that you get medibang paint, it's basically fire alpaca but dark mode
@ren It doesn't matter which program a beginner chooses to start with, as they're only going to use basic tools anyways. Therefore it's more about preference. Personally I prefer Sai for its minimalism. Also there are several changes in sai2, not just bug fixes. New tools, layer types/function, etc.
The EX version only adds animation tools and 3d object management as well as a serilized comic view to show all your comic pages. Pro is just the illustration tools.
The only issue I have with CSP is the system put in place to load files faster. Each file has a cache that stores data from layers even if you erase or delete them. Your average user wont have an issue with this feature but someone who animates will draw and delete a lot of layers and folders will balloon the file size to absurd extents. Thankfully, moving all the layers into a brand new project file is a workaround. But I'll still take CSP over the memory leaking photoshop any day. ( Plus CSP added a virtual camera feature recently, which un-ironically can be used to add tweens to your animations. Basically makes it like a combination of Flash and Photoshop for animation now. )
I prefer Photoshop because I don't draw line-heavy pictures, I paint landscapes and use large texture brushes - I think Photoshop is better for a more organic/form-dependent piece, and then this is better for lineart-style pieces. Both have great features but personally I'm more comfortable with the fluidity of PS
@@FluffleOW I think csp is especially better for that kind of work since the brush engine is much better than photoshop. Painting is more natural in csp than photoshop since it's been designed to do so, but in the end it's always a matter of which software you're more comfortable with.
It depends on the person, how much time is used to learn the program, what your using the program for, what your computer's stats are, etc. There's so many variables that telling someone one program is better than the other feels wrong. Try out every digital drawing tool you can find and see what works best for your workflow. I personally use Ps just because it's everywhere, easier to troubleshoot, and the platform I learned digital illustration on. Csp is purpose built for digital illustration, Ps is a more versatile tool (Csp is really good at one thing, Ps is adequate at many different things).
I love Clip Studio, it's my absolute favorite program! Once you import/make your own brushes, it's like tailoring the program to YOU! The pattern brushes, and customizations you can get from the Clip Studio community are amazing as well. Keep pushing it, Lavender, I think you'll really love it!
Pro is just as good imo. It just doesn't have the same animation and page maintenance resources. EDIT: Look in the materials catalogue, there are some great free brush resources in there. I got a great G-Pen brush that way.
for drawing panel borders you can activate "snap to grid" or "snap to ruler" (buttons at the top), then either create a ruler or activate the grid (view > grid) - That way you can hand-draw straight lines and in Clip Studio Assets there's loads of brushes to download for free; maybe you'll find one that you like more than the standard ones (but tbh although I've never used PS, I think it does offer more/better brushes than CSP, especially if you look for textured/painterly brushes)
Open canvas 7 is also a great option,I have managed to actually partially imitate some textures from Photoshop brushes and I never got this close before doing it any other app. And OpenCanvas 7 kills CsP with its insanely easy perspective tools and it's brush system is like CSP and SAi but at a more advanced level if you play hard enough
Hi! You popped into my recommendations, which is pretty spot on timing, as I started a webcomic but search for a better program for drawing comics than photoshop.
Hey !! Just some things about CSP i thought you might wanna know : there is a ruler tool, you can set a preset line and then use your brush to draw it to keep texture and size difference. There are different brushes you can easily download online (i personally use the lower bleed ink brush i found somewhere) also just in general nice video !! CSP has always been my favorite, and whilst i tried photoshop multiple times i could just never figure it out.
I've been using Clip Studio for about a month now, and I had been using photoshop for about 15 years. When I first tried it out I had the free version, and I didn't like the "feel" of the program when it came to sketching and making lineart, but I bought it last month in order to force myself to learn how to use it because I want to start a comic. Anyway, I started to figure it out, and almost everything you said you didn't like is easily fixed. If you download some of the assets from the community hub or make your own brushes, or adjust the pen pressure. One of the major things I love about making the brushes is the ability to have more than one brush tip for input, which makes the comic panels and straight line tool look a lot more "hand drawn" with varying line weight. It takes a bit of fiddling, but if you make a few brush tips that are hand drawn lines you can use them to make a new panel brush and adjust the angle that they're put down (you can also use them as a general brush so you can make straight lines that look organic). One of the things I've found super useful is the sub-tool option window being open, where you can quickly adjust stabilization and anti-aliasing ( as well as using the pen options to just uncheck the box that makes that line flip at the end).
It's just so much cheaper and better overall, i found a few brushes that work for me online, imported them and that worked for me! I also like the posing tool of the program, i have made for my main character a model and now i can draw him without any major differences, it"'s so helpfull!
Lavender! I also use Clip and I'd like to point out the 'snap to grid' tool so you can draw straight lines in varied weight! Just go to the 'view' menu and turn on the 'grid' option, then you should be able to select one of the grid snapping tools in the window's top bar. They look like little white pens drawing blue lines. Hope that helps!!
I’ve been using clip studio paint pro for almost a year now and I love it to deaaath. I fortunately got Pro on sale for $20. I used to use Paint Tool Sai (pirated but shhhhhhh) and it was a very easy transition. I really recommend it!
I use CSP for my webtoon I absolutely love it! Its really easy to use and it works smoothly. The community assets are great too for brushes, color pallets, patterns, and even 3d models.
Hey lavender! I use clip studio too, and it was really hard to get used to it in the beginning; but I still find that I keep discovering new useful features each time I draw, and I love it. Some hints regarding your lineart problems; Yeah, there are SO many ways to customise your brushes, I suggest you take a whole drawing session without having something to draw in mind, just to play around with those settings. It takes a while to get into it, but trust me, once you got it all set up your process is sped up immensely. Another feature you NEED to get into cuz it is just so helpful is vector layers. Ekkoberry made a tutorial on them you might find helpful: th-cam.com/video/MQVB_KOdDrE/w-d-xo.html Basically, instead of putting pixels down onto your page looking like a line, the program does the math and saves all points of the line. That makes you able to smooth them, bend them, change them, straighten them, change their thickness and do everything even after the lines are down. Even erasing and cleaning up gets so much easier. Furthermore, since you are working on a webcomic, there are settings where clip studio just manages ALL of your pages, have an overwiev, can see previous pages etc. Really really go into it! I believe it might speed up your drawing process a lot. Enjoy!
Omg you type just like me, w/ line breaks after some commas or semicolons to give a slightly bigger comma pause for some commas, but still pausing less than a period :)
who else got clip studio after getting a wacom drawing tablet. 69$ is all i spent to get the full version because the tablet already had the software, i just had to redeem the software so technically i got clip studio for free
Bless Wacom for giving CSP as a free bundle. lt's probably the only reason why I have CSP, since my parents don't really allow me to buy any art software since they're so expensive. A lot of my favorite comic artists use CSP as well, and it's compatible with psd. Ah, and I only knew recently that you can use the built-in 3D animations for comic making and illustrations. In other words, CSP saved my life before I even knew it.
Hi LavenderTowne! Great video, I love how you always sound so chill...Is like watching hot chamomile, it's relaxing. XD A little advice regarding inking, do it on a vector layer. This is something that a LOT of people coming from photoshop missed out, but it's the main reason why inking in CSP is a joy and doesn't give you any trouble. The first thing is that you can use the vector eraser to erase until the intersection (this is a time saver). The second thing is that you can use an option to fill up until the mid point of a vector line, it doesn't matter if the line is jagged textured etc. It will always go to the midpoint. Another thing a lot of Photoshop users miss out is the reference layer. The reference layer is an option in which the magic wand or the bucket tool go pick from that reference layer and not the layer in which you're drawing. A little pro's tip regarding brushes. You can add multiple brush tips to a single brush and giving them a random order. It means that if you add 5 brush tips to your inking brush and you put that order on random... well every stroke will be different but consistent. Plus you can do this to vector lines... So when you create a frame box using the frame tool OR the polyline shape tool (this one on a vector layer) you can change the feeling of the lines using the object tool. English is not my first language... so I'm sorry if I sounded cocky or rude. XD
Clip studio goes super deep, it so good. I'm actually currently switching from photoshop to solely using clip studio. Have you messed with the alias and stabilizer. The thing I'm having most of my problems adjusting is the brushes. but other than that i'm getting use to it really quickly
Fun fact: In one of her old videos, she mentioned she used to use Manga Studio which was the old clip studio paint name. But she didn’t like it because the stabilization wasn’t right I believe.
2:00 You can use the figure ruler tool and get the effect you're looking for. It allows you to great the shape of the panel you want then draw the line segments w/ the density you want.
Thanks for making this video. I'd been using photoshop for a while, until someone recommended clip studio paint, saying it was a one time cost, and had a lot of the same features of photoshop. Watching your video helped me learn so much more. I recently downloaded a trial of clip studio paint and have been enjoying it.
Thanks for this video, it was very informative! I'm new to Clip Studio Paint and didn't know about the paint bucket fill features and the colourize feature! Both sound SO helpful.
among free programs, medibag is certainly a very good one, but don't compare it to CSP or it will almost look like trash, not because medibang isn't good, but because CSP has so many advantages
@@leinine1834 A lot of CSP's features seem like fancy bells and whistles, a beginner might find them daunting or confusing. For a free program, Medibang is a very useful tool for making comics. Certainly a step up from MS Paint. The cloud feature is also something I have yet to find anything else with something similar. The ability to continue drawings I made on desktop on a mobile device (or vice versa) and collaborate with other people is something I find more useful than 3D model things or "colorize" features.
I did clip studio paint, it has so many things on there that really helps a beginner. It has many tricks to make manga and animation easier for me. At first I was so confused how to use clip studio paint but once I started watching the tutorial and tips it became very easy for me to draw well on it.
I don't know if anyone else had said this, but Paint Tool Sai IS still being updated! However, it's called Paint Tool Sai V2 now. www.systemax.jp/en/sai/devdept.html
Honestly people need to stop resurrecting this dead horse from their torrent list, for 20 bucks you can get Paintstorm Studio, and the app is grossly superior to SAI. If you're really patient you could wait for a sale and pick up Clip for 20 or even 15 bucks. Both Storm and Clip are superior and costs less.
@@frostreaper1607 There are some artists just like SAI more than Csp. Doesn't matter the reason, if there are people using it and like it who are we to tell them to 'stop resurrecting it'?
KonKon Art The problem is most people that use Paint Tool Sai don’t even pay for it. If your using it legally you’d have paid around $50 for it and for that money you can get better programs. The only way it’s a better option for newer artists is if they pirate it and the developer gets nothing from that.
@@winnief3661 The pirate dilemma is basically that Adobe (used as an example as it's the largest example of this) knows that pirates are a thing and acknowledge that a non insignificant amount of people don't pay for their programs. Adobe makes their money off the companies that are required to pay for Adobe licenses, and the standard pirate is used to reinforce Adobe products as an industry standard. In ideal perfect conditions people would pay for the products and price assessment can come from that. The issue is that in real world scenarios pirating brings the price to 0 (and with a small bit of time to acquire and learn ho to use it), which instantly makes it more competitive for the normal joe user. It's why Adobe has an iron lock on the digital industry, pirates were their friend (until recently at least). It's also why smaller devs can't afford to use pirates like Adobe can, (relatively) smaller devs (Sai, CSP, etc.) need that revenue from the average joe, which ironically makes them less competitive when compares to other programs on strictly a pricing standpoint.
Judging by the other comments CSP often have discounts. Some people got their pro version for 20-40$ so if you can wait, it might be better for you to wait? Just an fyi
I've been using CSP pro due to the affordability my whole time doing digital and I love that it kinda combines PS and Sai into one program :D also clip studio having downloadable assets to use is awesome!
I use Krita. I'm surprised the program isn't more popular honestly. It has tons of tools, is easy to learn, and has built in pen pressure stabilizer options.
csp is my favorite program, especially for comics! it's a perfect balance between the overly simple sai and the heavy and not adapted for drawing ps. it also has animation settings and I haven't tried those yet but heard that animating here is really nice. also I'm always using vector layers for lineart and I highly reccomend trying those, especially with your cartoon style. they make your lineart smooth, clean and easy to edit.
I use autodesk sketchbook. it's free, it's super intuitive but also really simple, but I can still get pretty good results out of it. it's good for beginners since it's easy to learn how to use
Aa, finally!! This is the program I use, and have been wondering if I should change, but after watching this I feel better. Your videos are adorable, by the way!! So inspirational!!
How long is awhile ago because when I got my copy, I got it from CSP's English site when it was selling for $50 (I actually got it for 15 but that's because it was on sale.)
@1:33 I'm sure you've already found this out but if you put down a perspective ruler layer, then all other layers will conform to the horizontal and vertical planes when that layer is visible. To stop it just turn the perspective ruler layer off. :) Also you can import your abr brushes from photoshop!
If you don't want to have the white fill when creating a panel you can turn it off by un-checking "Fill inside the frame" from within the Frame tool's properties. If you want to not create a new folder when creating a new panel, change the setting of "how to add" from "create new folder" to "add to selected folder". Do note that if you don't already have a panel folder, or are creating one while outside of the panel folder, it will create a new one. If you do not want( or do not want to see ) the mask that is automatically applied to a panel, right click it from within the layers and there are several options available. You can further edit a panel outline( or ruler ) by holding CTRL/Command and clicking one of the points that show up on the line. Or by using the Operation sub tool > Object. Or by using any of the Correct Line sub tools. A few more ways to make outlines for panels( or custom text bubbles ). If you select an area with one of the selection tools, go to Edit > Outline Selection. It will add an outline to the area you selected. Great for custom panels of all sorts. You can make a shortcut, hotkey, or an auto action out of it to further increase your productivity. The Ruler tool is another one, if at all I recommend using the figure ruler. You will have to learn how to add and remove rulers from a layer if you want to use this for panels. In order to edit panels later you will either need to use a vector layer when drawing the lines, or save the rulers for later. If you accidentally create the rulers on the wrong layer, don't worry, you can select and move them from layer to layer. While drawing a ruler if you don't want to accidentally rotate it, hold shift. There are multiple ways to do things in this software and it all comes down to you. What is most efficient for your workflow? Especially with comics, if something can save you even just 5 minutes per, it page will save you 2.5 hours on a 30 page chapter. Experiment and dive deep!
I cannot believe i've been sleeping on clip studio this whole time and used paint tool sai for the past 5 years. I really chose to struggle with the lack of tools that SAI has and worked around them smh. Im ready for a transition!
Well i try Krita once but its dont really make me inpresed me, i mean the tool are good but its lag pretty much, i cant even use the pen pressure. On the other hand i found CSP really interesting but i cant do much thing because i poor and i just look out a bit of the trial.
I personally use and LOVE Krita! It's features and presentation is on par with Photoshop and I'm never going back. best part is it's free. I do plan on donating to the Krita team once I get a steady income and I'd recommend the software to any beginner artist.
In case no one else has mentioned it, the flick that happens at the end of brush strokes is something of a glitch. Make sure your Windows Ink is turned off in your Wacom tablet properties (pen tool settings, specifically, where you do mapping to screen and such), and ensure that your Tablet preferences in CSP are set to Wintab and Use mouse mode, I think that's the main way to fix or reduce it, it's been a while since I had to do it last myself. If that doesn't help, try reducing the stabilization in tool settings. One particular thing about CSP compared to Photoshop is that lining and line thickness variation is better with slightly bigger brushes than you might be used to, and a slightly softer feel setting in your wacom settings can also help make it easier to work with. For panel borders, if you're doing square ones there's a free form shape tool hidden inside the blue triangle ruler tool, worth looking at and trying out, really practical for getting quick, well aligned borders. The ruler set is also incredibly flexible, there's straight line rulers, concentric circle rulers, perspective rulers, it's a mad collection. CSP is great for a lot of things, and most of them it does better than Photoshop, but it's also incredibly frustrating at times with how poorly optimized it is, it can really slow down when using big brushes on big canvases, so you kinda have to work around the software to do large scale things like production paintings, and the text tool is just the absolute worst (which is absurd, considering it's a comic production software). But the line engine, the fill tools, and all the neat little features really make it so much faster to run with than Photoshop, even if it does take a bit of reigning in to make it run properly.
@@bobbob-sh4yy trust me, no one likes animating. it's self-inflicted torture, realistically speaking though sai is VERY outdated in comparison to most other programs and simply can't be updated as fast as other "big" art programs due to having a single developer. which is a shame because the versatility is good and it's popular, but it's not really ideal for anything.
@@angel-ts1lzyeah, it is kinda outdated but there's a lot of pros to it 1: simple clean interface 2: one-time payment 3: easy but good tool customization 4: quick to get used to etc also, i have a few friends who enjoy animating & do it as stress relief, but idk about others
But if you put the pen down like you want to draw, press Shift and then drag the pen it will create a line...? I'm not sure if that's what you mean but you actually can do that in CSP (happened to me tons of times on accident!).
Because if you are profiting with it and do get caught it outweighs the pros severely.
Edit as of the 29th of October, 2022:
CSP seems to have gone back on this decision, as on their website they state that both CSP 2 and CSP 3 will be available for one-time purchase. But remember, if they think they can get away with changing to a subscription model, they will do it. Do not ever let them, just as community outcry caused them to change it back this time.
:[ yea :[
I feel like people are making a way bigger deal out of this than it has to be.
everybody, its piracy time
@@kitthedemon Nope that simply means 1.xx won't get any sorts of updates or compatibility fixes anymore.

That said, you can also use the ruler tools called "Linear Ruler" and even "Ruler pen" to laydown guides for your panels, then go over those lines with your pen and it'll trace the rulers exactly, with the texter of your pen and your widths!

i know i have a copy of manga studio somewhere but i can't remember at all where. maybe it came in a humble bundle or something?
clip studio paint takes a bit of getting used to because there are so many tools, but i totally got comfy with it within a week of regular use! one of the only problems i found is you have to rasterize text before you can rotate it and such, which is a bit of a pain. on the plus side they recently updated the animation features to include audio and camera movements so that's rly great 👀 Anyway, it's super cool to see one of my fav artists trying out the program!! definitely do some more exploring, there's a lot more to CSP than we all think at first tbh.
Also found that if you copy/paste in graphics from other images, the resulting layer must also be rasterized before it can be edited.
I saw the comic page you drew using this before the video came out! Why does that make me feel proud?
If you want to do straight lines with pressure differences you should use the ruler first, and then you draw in the ruler lines that you created :)
You can download a lot of content too.
Clip studio can accept project files from photoshop.
Make lines in photoshop and then move the files to clip for colors!
That's pretty cool, 1 year old comment!
@chibishii yes so clip studio accepting photoshop files makes the transition easy
1 Tip for Clip Studio Paint (EX)
If you click on the eyedropper function, there is a sub tool labeled "adjust line width".

Random Digital Drawing Question:
I've been having some trouble with making lineart for my pieces, mostly since any brush I try seems to lose opacity at lower pressures and doesn't really feel like it flows well, plus the pressure never seems even and can bulge at times (That may just be me, but I can't really tell as of now).
Depending on what program you use, there should be a setting somewhere that can disable pen pressure when it comes to opacity on a certain brush.
(I recently learned that stabilization is why my lines are smoother on some pens than others.)
Also, I wouldn't say a certain brush is better because different brushes work better for different people and they style they draw in. :D
It depends on what program you are using, but usually there are options in any program to define the use of pressure sensetivity.

This aged well...
Well,,, this aged,,, uh,,, I'd say it aged well but man
csp is the superior program change my mind
that's what ive been saying for 6 years now!
I see that Into The Spiderverse background!! Would you ever make a video around it, if you find a nice concept? Maybe draw some spidersonas!!

I literally just downloaded the app so I could read your comic, I just got finished with Unfamiliar and I really love it owo
Pro is just as good imo.
It just doesn't have the same animation and page maintenance resources.
EDIT: Look in the materials catalogue, there are some great free brush resources in there. I got a great G-Pen brush that way.
for drawing panel borders you can activate "snap to grid" or "snap to ruler" (buttons at the top), then either create a ruler or activate the grid (view > grid) - That way you can hand-draw straight lines
and in Clip Studio Assets there's loads of brushes to download for free; maybe you'll find one that you like more than the standard ones
(but tbh although I've never used PS, I think it does offer more/better brushes than CSP, especially if you look for textured/painterly brushes)
also I remember having that flick issue as well, but I somehow got rid of that (don't remember how tho, but it's definitely possible)
Hi! You popped into my recommendations, which is pretty spot on timing, as I started a webcomic but search for a better program for drawing comics than photoshop.
i just bought clip studio for half off with that sale they just had !! I'm so glad and I hope others took that opportunity too
Hope that helps!!

just to play around with those settings. It takes a while to get into it, but trust me, once
you got it all set up your process is sped up immensely.
Another feature you NEED to get into cuz it is just so helpful is vector layers.
Ekkoberry made a tutorial on them you might find helpful:
th-cam.com/video/MQVB_KOdDrE/w-d-xo.html
Basically, instead of putting pixels down onto your page looking like a line, the program does the math
and saves all points of the line. That makes you able to smooth them, bend them, change them,
straighten them, change their thickness and do everything even after the lines are down.
Even erasing and cleaning up gets so much easier.
Furthermore, since you are working on a webcomic, there are settings where clip studio just
manages ALL of your pages, have an overwiev, can see previous pages etc.
Really really go into it! I believe it might speed up your drawing process a lot. Enjoy!
Omg you type just like me,
w/ line breaks after some commas or semicolons to give a slightly bigger comma pause for some commas,
but still pausing less than a period :)
For anyone interested in Clip Studio Paint, it goes on sale a lot! I think I got mine (the pro one) on black Friday. I think it was about $40
who else got clip studio after getting a wacom drawing tablet. 69$ is all i spent to get the full version because the tablet already had the software, i just had to redeem the software
so technically i got clip studio for free
Bless Wacom for giving CSP as a free bundle. lt's probably the only reason why I have CSP, since my parents don't really allow me to buy any art software since they're so expensive. A lot of my favorite comic artists use CSP as well, and it's compatible with psd. Ah, and I only knew recently that you can use the built-in 3D animations for comic making and illustrations. In other words, CSP saved my life before I even knew it.
Heh

Please tell me how, I have the trial from wacom but I need help!!
Emi this is basically the same for me

Hi LavenderTowne! Great video, I love how you always sound so chill...Is like watching hot chamomile, it's relaxing. XD
A little advice regarding inking, do it on a vector layer.
XD
Been using Clip for a long time. Love the software. Screw Photoshop's prices hiking.
Have you tried Medibang Paint Pro? I think it's a really great program.
Edit: If you need any tutorials, check out Jyunee and Clockbirds.
It's actually not that good
@@ketchup7528 I personally like the program. Are you facing any problems with it or something?
@@raphapantanio and it's available for both PC and mobile. You can download and customize brushes to your preference.
among free programs, medibag is certainly a very good one, but don't compare it to CSP or it will almost look like trash, not because medibang isn't good, but because CSP has so many advantages
It's 50% off right now on their store
I love Clip Studio Paint so much, for me it's the best drawing program ever !
I did clip studio paint, it has so many things on there that really helps a beginner. It has many tricks to make manga and animation easier for me. At first I was so confused how to use clip studio paint but once I started watching the tutorial and tips it became very easy for me to draw well on it.
How convenient I get this video in my recommended now lol
Just use open canvas 7
It’s so cool that you made this video now cause I planned to buy CSP tomorrow 😂👍🏻
Judging by the other comments CSP often have discounts. Some people got their pro version for 20-40$ so if you can wait, it might be better for you to wait? Just an fyi
I draw comments in my note book when I'm bored. xD
Do you mean comics?
Yeah lol sorry about that.
My last brain cell in action :

Lavender: Saying how much better Clip Studio Paint is compared to Photoshop
Ad: Interrupts
Also ad: GET PHOTOSHOP NOW!!!
FR I GOT THAT AD IN A CSP VIDEO BEFORE THIS AND DURING THIS AHA
I've been using CSP pro due to the affordability my whole time doing digital and I love that it kinda combines PS and Sai into one program :D also clip studio having downloadable assets to use is awesome!
(Me, someone who's used csp for a year)

There's a setting for WHAT?
I use Krita. I'm surprised the program isn't more popular honestly. It has tons of tools, is easy to learn, and has built in pen pressure stabilizer options.
this video aged like milk
I’ve been using Clip studio for like 4 years! I’m glad to see ppl talking about it ^_^
csp is my favorite program, especially for comics! it's a perfect balance between the overly simple sai and the heavy and not adapted for drawing ps. it also has animation settings and I haven't tried those yet but heard that animating here is really nice.
also I'm always using vector layers for lineart and I highly reccomend trying those, especially with your cartoon style. they make your lineart smooth, clean and easy to edit.
I use autodesk sketchbook. it's free, it's super intuitive but also really simple, but I can still get pretty good results out of it. it's good for beginners since it's easy to learn how to use
FINALLY! No one ever talks about clip studip! I've been using clip studio paint since I was in middle school and it's fantastic.
@@cedar7560 hmm, i believe it was 3 or 4 years ago?
@1:33 I'm sure you've already found this out but if you put down a perspective ruler layer, then all other layers will conform to the horizontal and vertical planes when that layer is visible. To stop it just turn the perspective ruler layer off. :)
Also you can import your abr brushes from photoshop!
@kinky chocolate no problem 😭
Can you compare Clip Studio and Krita now
Please!
Krita dosent work on hwr computer.
Hope Diamond Sasa-GAY-o - I am very used to Krita, and I am gonna use Clip soon. But I probably won’t make a video.
Well i try Krita once but its dont really make me inpresed me, i mean the tool are good but its lag pretty much, i cant even use the pen pressure.
On the other hand i found CSP really interesting but i cant do much thing because i poor and i just look out a bit of the trial.
EEEEEEEEEE I SAW MILES FROM SPIDERMAN: INTO THE SPIDER VERSE!!!!!
I love that movie, also that was one of my favorite parts of the movie!!
I have the same background on my desktop and thought the video flickered for a second until I realized she had the same picture.
Paint Tool Sai is the best,
Change my mind
i love sai but it doesn't work with huion.
which isn't sai's fault.
you ever tried animating in sai though?
@@angel-ts1lz not everyone likes to animate tbh- reason i got pro instead of ex
@@bobbob-sh4yy trust me, no one likes animating. it's self-inflicted torture,
realistically speaking though sai is VERY outdated in comparison to most other programs and simply can't be updated as fast as other "big" art programs due to having a single developer. which is a shame because the versatility is good and it's popular, but it's not really ideal for anything.
@@angel-ts1lzyeah, it is kinda outdated but there's a lot of pros to it
1: simple clean interface
2: one-time payment
3: easy but good tool customization
4: quick to get used to
etc
also, i have a few friends who enjoy animating & do it as stress relief, but idk about others
But if you put the pen down like you want to draw, press Shift and then drag the pen it will create a line...?
I'm not sure if that's what you mean but you actually can do that in CSP (happened to me tons of times on accident!).
Why not just get photoshop illegally and never face the legal consequences?
Pls fbi I didn't mean it.
Because if you are profiting with it and do get caught it outweighs the pros severely. But anyway the way i see it, if you are doing this professionally you should spend and invest in your tools csp, is good, but photoshop is way more versatile and has more going on in the backend, i cant paint the way i do on csp, it just doesnt work well enough
@@MFMArt lol
I got it legally for 30 euros lmao
Actually, Adobe does go after people who try to get Photoshop illegally. Theres a chance you'll get away with it but if you don't, they can send huge fines your way ;-;
It’s ok because I save up to 15% or more on my geico insurance
The way you drew the Kings hand is amazing! I know the sparkles were meant for the magic money, but in my opinion, it’s for the amazing hand you’ve drawn!
I love the sound of customizing brushes. I am thinking about getting this software. I love this tutorial and its comparison between PS and Clip Studio. As a graphic artist this is a nice surprise.
