  • In this episode of TFBTV, ‪@JamesReeves‬ gives you a long-overdue review of the Mossberg 590A1. The Mossberg 590A1 is known for its durability: This shotgun has been tested and proven in some of the toughest environments, including military trials. It can handle a wide range of ammunition types and conditions, and it has a smooth and reliable action that makes it easy to use even in stressful situations. The Mossberg 590A1 is versatile as well: Whether you need a home defense shotgun or a tactical shotgun for law enforcement use, the Mossberg 590A1 is good to go. However, with semi-auto shotguns like the Mossberg 940 Tactical and Beretta a300 Patrol approaching the same price point as this top of the line pump, is the Mossberg 590A1 still worth your attention? Especially the Vang Comp "Standard" edition James reviews in this episode - at $1,000 MSRP, should you just get a semi-auto instead? James opines today on TFBTV.

      The maverick may not be as robust when it comes to taking heavy abuse, but it's plenty robust and reliable for the vast majority of shooters out there. I've had them all, the 590 series really doesn't feel any different in terms of operation, but it was heavier and it definitely felt robust. Imo, there's only a few other shotguns that gives a 590 a run for it's money in terms of reliability and durability, a pre '07 870, the Ithaca model 37 (hope I got the model correct, but it's their version of the riot shotgun/police model). Obviously the military ended up choosing the 590 and LE agencies went with the 870 while a few departments did go with the Ithaca.

    Back in 1989 I was fresh out of college and had my first apartment in a so so neighborhood. Someone tried to break in one night. He didnt make it in, but I thought I need a weapon for home defense. At the gym the next day I spoke to a friend who was a prison guard and he suggested a Mossberg 500. he told me Service Merchandise was selling a 500 that came with both 16" and 20" barrels for $99.00. That same day I went and bought the shotgun. Even though I have bought several guns since then, the 500 is still my bedside go to home defense weapon. It has never failed.

    • @tokr72
      @tokr72 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes!! My friend and I also purchased 500s from Service Merchandise around the same time, 1990 I think it was. Came with two barrels, classic walnut furniture with the corn cob pump, heat shield and a pistol grip, All for $99. Sick deal even back then. Because I was using it for home defense, I installed the pistol grip, switched to a synthetic forearm and stored the wood furniture. I kept the 500 in that configuration for decades until recently, when I decided to switch back to the retro trench gun look. Reinstalled the wood furniture with the heat shield and wow, Such a beautiful shotgun. Fell in love with it all over again. Thanks for igniting that memory of Service Merchandise, my friend whose now passed, and our Mossys.

    Other than rate of fire and reliability, there's one big difference between pumps and semi-autos, and that is the use of short shells.
    For defensive use cases specifically, the short shell packs enough power to make it lethal without being overwhelming, and gives you a 10 round capacity.
    So really you should do a 590S 20in (13+1) vs. maybe a 940 pro tac.

If you’re in some sort of combat someone with an AR/AK is going to wax you 9 times out of 10 at most distances, even with slugs in a shotgun. Even for home defense shotguns aren’t ideal for most people. Most people’s best use for a tac shotgun is probably either as a range toy or popping off at hogs. Feeling some sense of superiority for spending ~$600-700 more for negligible return is just a sad flex.

    When I first got my 590A1 when I turned 18 it would not cycle well at all. I had to pump it two or three times to get it to release a shell from the magazine tube. Turned out it was the bar that retained the shells in the magazine being bent a little off from the factory. As a result the bar would push inward rather than outward to release a shell. A quick straightening of the bar and filing of the burr that resulted from the initial malfunction and every since then my 590A1 runs like an absolute champ.

They are so slow and they constantly have issues with short stroking the gun. The 1301 just eats everything flawlessly. It is like cheating. The Langdon version takes it up a notch (albeit I question the price but that's another story). Throw an Aimpoint T2 on it and it is unbeatable in terms of speed. I also saw the Benelli M4 guys having malfunctions so there's that. The M4 is great, but really just made for buck/slugs. The 1301 eats everything, albeit I primarily run 00 buck, because I practice with what I'd use in a defensive situation. Plus you can fire buck all day long and not get beat up like you do with the 590A1. I used to run a 590A1, and I've broken ribs with it before. I tried the mini shells. Fun to shoot and what not, but I've always gotten eratic patterns especially with the buckshot loads so I went back with normal 2.75" #4 buck.

      For hunting I can see your point.
      They reduce the powder.
      But as a 000 buck for defense, you might be good.
      For hunting you might be better with 2 3/4 - 3 inch shells.

    I learned on both the 590 and the R870 in my time with the Navy. Ended up liking the 870 more, and it's what I own currently. I'd ask if you guys ever plan on doing a burn down on one, but I can't tell if it would be a good or bad thing cos their quality has really went downhill up until very recently. Probably still better than a Turkish gun, but I wouldn't be surprised if even the maverick 88 was built better lol. Thankfully my 870 was some sort of special run with blackhawk knoxx furniture from the 2000's...but it's a 20 gauge. Still can do work with it, ammos just a problem today lol

      @D R I bought an older model specifically because of their issues, and the previous owner took quality care of his firearms. I wouldn't buy a R870 today most likely, though I have heard their shockwave model has gotten much better. It's just the platform I feel the most competent with, but I'd gladly switch to the 590 or even 500 if I had the income to

    • @BlueJayWaters

      @Logan Scott the 870s most bases or ships have are from super old stock. They've been largely phased out for the 590, but even then, that training has been phased out itself from bootcamp. These days if you learn how to run a shotgun in the Navy, you're either a Master-At-Arms (MP), VBSS member, or have a collateral as a firearms instructor. And obviously if you're in special Warfare operations or deploy with Marines.

    I bought the 835 Ulti-Mag brand new back in 1988, Came with 10 3 1/2' shells right in the box.,GREAT TURKEY GUN.
    Ended up buying a 24" barrel & porting it like Mossberg did later on. Also have a Ported Choke Tube on it but it still DOES NOT TAME THE 3 1/2" LOADS, DAMN THEY KICK. Use 2 3/4" for hunting mostly, not the 3' or the 3 1/2".
    Put a Ghost Ring sight on it with a BIG DOT front sight, shot Turk's out to 90 yards with the XXFULL Comp-N-Choke Tube. It's still going strong since 1988 with not one problem.

    I currently own two Mossberg shotguns. I was searching for an 590A1 when I saw a used 930 JM with Oregon 3 gun upgrades. So I took it home. Later I found a 590 with bead sight and camo furniture. I like the slender corn cob grip. I have lusted for the 590 A1 since before Hop was born. I also have a Wilson Combat Remington 870 Professional model since 2004. It has induced a slow drool from several law enforcement guys. I have used it to relegate a few big nocturnal jack rabbits in Clint Smith's A.O. However the safety selector is my favorite on the O.M. smokepole.

    Just cause something passed a 3k round test years ago doesn't mean what is currently on the shelves can do the same or has the same QC. A 590 from years vs. one today torn down would be nice. Comps and lead shot, but no chokes.

  • @ironked
    @ironked ปีที่แล้ว

    My first Mossberg pump was an 835 with the backbored, ported barrel. The 835 is basically a 590 with the receiver built to accommodate a 3.5" chamber barrel. I managed to get hold of a 590 barrel (3" chamber) to swap. That's what it wears at home. Really the only thing missing is the corncob pump handle. It's a tank of a gun. So I have a sporting 590 in essence.
    Incidentally, my real HD shotgun is a 70s Mossberg 500 that has had enough wear to be super smooth. Hit the release and the action just falls open. When I bought it used the end of the long barrel had pitting. Excellent candidate for shortening to 18".
