Next in line is Moonraker. The only film where Bond travels to space. It was a funny fact that the idea of a Bond movie in space was because the film premiered in a time where space based films were taking audiences to the cinema like the first Star Wars movie in 1977.
Just a gently reminder to youngsters: there were not green screens, not cgi or similar IN THE SKI SCENE. An actual man jumped off a cliff and they had only one chance to film it. One of the greatest stunts of all time.
Blue/green screen technology did exist in the 70s. In British television and film it was called "color separation overlay". I learned this from watching documentaries and extra feature vids from the Jon Pertwee era of Doctor Who.
Also during the premiere in the UK prince Charles was there. And after that stunt when the parachute opened it got a standing ovation with prince charles too!
The scene where Anya figures out that Bond was the man who killed her boyfriend is my favorite Roger Moore scene in the series. No quips, no raised eyebrows. It’s like we see behind the facade for a moment and meet the real Bond, who is a professional killer above all else. Moore gives a really layered performance there.
Agreed. Moore was often put down for his acting; here we actually believe it was him skiing, and the change in his bodily expressions, although only slight, his cold to the point response and words exude those of a professional killer - layered like you said. He could be comedic one moment and deadly the next.
Bond's confession about killing Anya's lover is underrated personally, Bond didn't hide anything remained Anya what "business" their employed in and that he didn't enjoy killing him but was self-defense and subtle tell her that if Anya's lover had not tried to kill bond he still be alive.
They wrote that in to make it more interesting? So the audience would be intrigued. would she try to kill him? It made it more of a reason for the audience to watch it it until the end.
Interesting gadget note: back when this film came out in 1977 pretty much no one in the audience had ever seen a Jet-Ski/Ski-Doo type thing before, the “Wet Bike” that Bond rides from the sub to the villain’s lair was seen as just another fantastic futuristic Bond Gadget. Within two years they’d be pretty much everywhere there was a decent sized body of water, but it was this film that pretty much introduced them to the public.
There's a similar story about base jumping. 9 people out of 10 were convinced that the jump in the beginning of the movie was fake. The base jumpers, on the other hand, were super happy that a movie finally showed what base jumpers could do.
That opening ski jump done by Rick Sylvester was absolutely amazing. Jumped off mountain cliff in Norway. He was the only stuntman in a Bond film credited by name at beggining of film and deserved it. Was paid in advance obviously.
This is the film that finally put Richard Kiel (Jaws} in the spotlight after over twenty years. Usually in a costume or under lots of make-up. He was an alien in the classic Twilight Zone episode, To Serve Man. One of his last roles was in Happy Gilmore.
He played one of Patrick McGoohan's henchmen in 'Silver Streak' in 1976. A very similar character to Jaws. He even had metal teeth (this time they were gold) a year before this movie.
Lawrence of Arabia is one of the finest films ever made, and you should absolutely see it. You probably would want to see it in two parts, though. It is a looooonnnnnnggggg movie. 😄 This was the *second best* Roger Moore Bond flick. I remember thinking Jaws was a great "thug" villain, when I was a kid.

Legend says that when this movie opened in London, the Ski Jump and Union Jack parachute received a standing ovation by all watching, including Prince Charles himself
@@mattp6089 I go back and forth between this film and FYEO. You are right in that this one is more fun. It sets up all the best tropes and sets in concrete the formula that works so well into the future. FYEO is more serious with more personal stakes yet still has Roger's sense of quippy humor in it plus he is his most hard-core in that film so it is a toss-up for me but FYEO barely edges out this film IMHO.
@@mattp6089 The problem with For Your Eyes Only is that there are no villains with any pinazz to them. They are so plain I can hardly even remember any of their names. It's a good plot, with good stunts, and a good lead Bond girl but you never really feel like any of the villains are in Bond's league.
I agree! The quality of Moore 's Bond movies pretty much go downhill from here. Not his fault, he acted the role as written. Because his acting style is different from Connery's (for example RM abhors violence) the role was less "fighty" and more "quippy". One can only get away with that for so long. This is only my personal opinion of course but I believe after the negative reaction to George Lazenby and the positive reaction to a younger Roger Moore the producers simply had a hard time letting go. Why change anything in a Bond movie when the same Bond and the same formula has worked for so long? Moore did his best but as a human being he (like ALL of us) was not immune to normal gradual aging. When I imagine the kind of Bond character I want to see quips are secondary to being able to take care of himself in a physical confrontation so these made the next couple of movies in the series less enjoyable. That and oh yeah, the stories seemed way less epic. Just my opinion, I don't mean to offend anyone's taste in Bond movies. No worries however, the situa tion eventually resolves itself. Thank you Miss "Moneyjenny" (may I call you "Miss Moneyjenny"?) for respecting a classic character, some classic storytelling and for making watching movies so much fun
The Roger Moore Bond films were definitely hit and miss. I really like Live and Let Die, The Spy Who Loved Me and For Your Eyes Only, but don’t really care for The Man With the Golden Gun, Moonraker, Octopussy and A View To A Kill.
The Spy Who Loved Me opened in August of 1977, two months after the release of Star Wars, and grossed $46.8 million in the US and $185.4 million globally on a $13.5 million budget, making it the eighth highest grossing film of 1977, as well as the most successful James Bond movie and United Artists highest grossing film at the time. Roger Moore also considered it his personal favorite Bond film.
As a huge Bond Aficionado (aka "nut" lol), I love all the Bond actors for different reasons. When I was little, Roger Moore was my first real exposure to Bond (his movies played on cable all the time), despite Connery chronologically coming first. As such, Moore (and Dalton) were kind of like "my" Bonds - and regardless of how Moore is viewed through a contemporary lens, he holds a special place for me as a fan. That said, this is my personal favorite Moore outing, and IMO, top 5-6 Bond film overall. The tense scenes aboard the boat diffusing the bombs, JAWS not being a punchline (se: Moonraker), the British and Royal Navy working together and the iconic Pyramic scenes are just great. Love it!
To be honest, I watch a lot of reactors (including a couple of Canadians), but when it comes to Bond reactions, nothing beats the excitement I see in Jen's reactions for those movies.
This is where the Roger Moore ones REALLY kicked into high gear for me. So much fun, I love that you're just on board to go all the way through and see them evolve! Also the groovy 70s vibes to the music, SO fun! Also as a gadget lover, Moore era goes WILD!

The actor playing Jaws was also in _Happy Gilmore_ where Shooter’s ball landed on his foot. He was also in the beginning where Happy shot a nail into his hard hat.

Hey Jen! Absolutely do Lawrence of Arabia! Great reaction, once again! - Triple X was played by Barbara Bach, who is married to Ringo Star of The Beatles. - The music was by Marvin Hamlisch, who did the music for 'The Sting', and the song 'Nobody Does It Better' was sung by Carly Simon who was just recently inducted into The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. The song is considered the 3rd best Bond song, and it's one of my favorites. The lyrics were by Carole Bayer Sager who was a longtime partner of Hamlisch both professionally and personally. The two later wrote a Broadway musical that was very thinly autobiographical about their relationship called 'They're Playing Our Song'. Carly won an Oscar for Best Song for 'Let The River Run' from the comedy 'Working Girl' in 1989, and her most famous song is "You're So Vain"...an amazing singer-songwriter! - Jaws was played by Richard Kiel, who is considered a fan favorite Bond bad guy. - The submarine car is the Lotus Espirit S1 nicknamed "Wet Nellie". The same make of car will also appear briefly in 'For Your Eyes Only' in a different color.
Don't forget you can see Ringo and Barbara together in the "comedy" CAVEMAN lol. Also, she should DEFINITELY see Working Girl! (Sigourney Weaver and Harrison Ford!)

As someone else mentioned, "Agent XXX" was played by Barbara Bach who a few years later married Ringo Starr (Beatles drummer). They are still married today, 42 years!
The few that have attempted it have gotten tangled up in the series' attitudes toward stuff and haven't entered into the spirit of the things like Jen does. A few very young reactors couldn't get past the goofiness of the Cold War as presented in movies and those that could cope with that couldn't take Bond villains seriously. Inevitable that these things are a product of their time, I suppose - the Daniel Craig films might as well take place on another planet from the Roger Moore films.
Richard Kiel (Jaws) in his later years, was a resident of Oakhurst California. I worked at a McDonald's there when he would come through the drive-thru and order two large coffees for himself. He was usually done with the first cup before he left the parking lot. The movie theatre also had several pieces of memorabilia from movies he had been in along with posters of movies (other than his) that had been filmed in the area.
I've heard someone call 'The Spy Who Loved Me" the "Ur-James Bond film", not necessarily because it is the best (even though I absolutely love it) but because it has all the elements you think of that make Bond. A fantastic song (maybe my favourite in the entire run), great action, glamorous locations, an iconic henchman, a magnificent villains lair and a super sexy leading lady. We even get a nice moment of continuity where they reference Tracy (sure she isn't named onscreen but we all know who Anya is talking about when she mentions Bond was married once.) Roger Moore is at the top of his game here too. All in all just a great time and I am loving your reactions! :)
Finally! 😍 I was literally waiting all week for your reaction - and you've obviously HAD a blast watching this. There was a time in my teens when I was obsessed with TSWLM. Came home from school, did my homework, watched the movie, next day again. Propably for about half a year. This movie is still SO spectacular. From the pre-title sequence (people went nuts when they saw the parachute), to the action, the car (LOVE the Lotus), the sets (I personally think that the tank-stage is the greatest set in movie-history) and of course the henchman. Richard Kiel has without a doubt became THE ultimate Bond-henchman. His name is a wink to a certain movie by a man called Spielberg (who always wanted to direct a Bond-movie). As a whole, TSWLM is simply spectacular. Albert R. Broccoli went full risk with this one. Highest budget for a Bond-movie so far which launched the legendary 007-Stage, still one of the biggest movie-stages worldwide. And to set the lighting right for the tanker-set, they called none other than Stanley Kubrick for help! Not my favourite Moore-Bond (it's coming soon) but still one of the best with Roger finally becoming "his" Bond. And the next one is indeed Moonraker, for a very simple reason: they scrapped the usual plans because of the success of a little flick called STAR WARS. Can't wait for your reaction in that one!

Fun Fact: The Tanker Set was the largest set ever built. (3 original size submarines fitted inside) When they tried to light the set, the productiondesigner, a short sighted man was asked were he wanted the spotlights. His answer "I cant even see the end of this set, place the bloody lights were you want" They´d also rent a real life Tanker for the exterieur shots. However the flyby shots been useless, so the had to build a model of it. Later during the premiere, the captain of the real tanker asked when they filmed all this stunning scenes. He didnt notice that ALL of it was a model.
The subs are less than half the size of the real subs (stated so in original publicity material at the time), and the soundstage (now the 007 Stage) at Pinewood IIRC, was built for this film. Many films have been made there, but most sets for Bond films tend to be built outdoors now, often on runways, rather like the city of Theed for 'The Phantom Menace' and the French town in 'Saving Private Ryan'.
The The Ski Jump In the beginning was a one take stunt if you notice a ski actually hits the Parachute during the fall and yes a guy did it. It was dangerous and brought the crowd in the theater to their feet. Barbara Bach Who was amazing in this eventually married Ringo Star from the Beatles . This was the first Bond movie that was actually written for Moore that is why it worked so well . The car was a Lotus , to get it in the movie they kept parking this car which wasn't in production yet outside the offices of the producers till it caught their eye . Jen if you can't tell I a a Bond nut and have loved every one of your reactions and can't wait till Moonraker you will love the main Bond Girls Name !!!!!
This one has all the needed parts of a Bond movie but still feels like a separate film. The locations and music score make it feel mystical. I watch this one most of all...
It's somewhat ironic a Bond villain called "Jaws" eats a SHARK a couple of years after the film "Jaws" (1975) was made. Payback 🦈🤣 Moonraker is next in the release order, they did change their plans to capitalize on another huge and unexpected blockbuster which I won't name for spoiler reasons. My favorite Bond and the ultimate James Bond movie in my eyes. It has a classic plot, a beautiful Bond girl that is his equal in many ways, a memorable henchman, a great villain lair, a jaw-dropping stunt in the opening, a unique car, a fantastic title song, etc. I'm also a sucker for the more disco soundtrack on this one.
This is one of my top favorite Bond movies, A clever KGB Bond girl, the toughest and best henchman ever in the form of Jaws and our Bond girl actually scaring Bond for a few second at the end lol
The Jet Ski was first commercially available in 1973. In 1977 people who did not regularly participate in watersports might not have been familiar with them just yet. This made its appearance in this film that much more spectacular and (for lack of a better term) "Bond-like".
The theme song at the beginning is possibly one of the greatest, if not the greatest, Bond theme of all time. "Nobody Does It Better" by Carly Simon is a timeless classic.
Fun fact: as soon as the tanker ship/submarine pen set wrapped filming in 1976, they built Superman’s fortress of solitude for the 1978 film “Superman” with Christopher Reeve. That sound stage had been dubbed the “007” sound stage because it was used so many times to construct the elaborate Bond villain sets and spectacular structures appearing in those films. It was also used for Raiders of the Lost Ark and the Star Wars movies before the Spy Who Loved Me. Cool movies!
The sound stage was built for The Spy Who Loved Me & was always called the 007 stage. They built the set at the same time they completed the building. Star Wars was filmed too early to use it (& certainly most of the trilogy was filmed in Elstree, not Pinewood). The volcano set for You Only Live Twice was temporary, which they felt in hindsight was a bit of a waste so they wanted to avoid the same mistake again.
@@TheRip72 Exactly, the 007 stage was inaugurated in 1976 while filming for this movie took place. It has since burned down twice because of "mishaps" during shoots for other movies but has always been rebuilt and it also got slightly damaged during filming of the most recent Bond flick "No Time To Die". The original Star Wars trilogy was only filmed in Elstree Studios at Borehamwood, there is even a documentary around called "Elstree 1976" about some of the guys who played minor roles and Stormtroopers and mostly had small cameo roles on lots of other movies during their careers, like Jeremy Bulloch and Anthony Forrest, who also appear in TSWLM (and in case of Bulloch, a couple more Bond movies).

Surf music was trendy when Dr. No and From Russia With Love were filmed, accounting for the prominence of the "surf guitar" riff in the original version of the James Bond Theme. Richard Keil Jaws beside playing Mr. Larson in Happy Gilmore was in a movie called the Longest Yard with Burt Reynolds. He passed away 3 days before his 75th birthday. He was born in my hometown Detroit. Interesting Note: He was blind in one eye. 2nd best reactor excellent reaction. Keep up the good work.
Also played a couple of creatures in episodes of The Night Stalker. He played the Spanish moss monster in one episode and the cursed medicine man in another.
Interesting story about the car. Lotus parked the prototype down the street from the production offices for Bond for a few weeks hoping to get the attention of the powers that be. It worked, and the Esprit ended up in this film (and the next). At the time (1977), it was a pretty exotic looking car (and even 45 years later it still looks pretty good). There are rumors that Lotus thought that the stunt driver was driving the car too slow, so many of the scenes of the initial car chase were filmed with the test driver who was able to push the limit of the car me. Obviously it's not a Delorean (the Delorean didn't come out until 4 years after this film), but the Delorean is a "sibling" to the Esprit. Delorean went to Lotus to help them design the car, and so it shares a similar frame/body to the Esprit.
Lotus's always look cool, but they're always made out of parts from a myriad of other cars. Lotus designs and builds bodies, everything else comes from other cars. If I remember right the esprit had a Peugeot transmission, and it did have Toyota MR2 taillights. That's why they say LOTUS means Lots Of Trouble Usually Serious.

Glad you enjoyed this one Jen. In my opinion this is the very best of Moore's time as Bond. And yes, originally the plan was to do For Your Eyes Only next, however the success of a little film called Star Wars changed that.
Love your reactions. FYI, the location of the filming of the pier when James drove the Lotus off into the water is on the north side of the very small Italian Island of La Maddelana. I had the pleasure of living on "La Madd" for a couple of years. The US Navy had a small presence there. It's a beautiful beach. The Americans, of course, called it "James Bond Beach". There's also a quick scene of James getting off a ferry boat. That was the ferry between "La Madd" and Palau, Italy (a town on the island of Sardinia.
Interesting bit of casting: After appearing as Jaws in The Spy who Loved Me, Richard Kiel was the first to be considered to play a character based off of a Marvel Comics superhero; The Incredible Hulk. But after the first week of shooting, producers looked at Kiel and realized that while he had the height for the character, he lacked the musculature needed for the character. So he was sadly let go, and Lou Ferrigno got the role. But if you look at the pilot episode for The Incredible Hulk TV Series, you can see one shot of Kiel as The Hulk.
Great reaction Jen! This is definitely one of the best Roger Moore Bond films. Peak Bond Trope execution! For Your Eyes only was supposed to release next as it was one of the remaining unadapted Flemming stories. Then a little movie called Star Wars came out and Science Fiction became very en vogue, thus Moonraker was moved to the head of the line. It is super cheesy, but I think you will love it.
Hi Jen! The Spy Who Loved Me's tanker set was so big that it required a totally new soundstage to be built at Pinewood Studios. Now known as the Albert R Broccoli 007 soundstage, it is the second largest soundstage in the world in terms of available floorspace (it's believed that the new Bad Wolf Studios soundstage 6 in Cardiff, Wales just beats it to the record for the tallest soundstage), and has been used for numerous major productions at the studios since. It's also burnt down twice - once in 1984 when it burnt to the ground during the shooting of Ridley Scott's Legend, and again in 2006 when the roof was destroyed days after the completion of Casino Royale - and one wall was severely damaged in 2019 when a shot involving explosives went seriously wrong!

The bad guy was played by Curt Jurgens. He starred in The Enemy Below. A very good 1957 DeLuxe Color war film in CinemaScope about a battle between an American destroyer escort and a German U-boat during World War II. Produced and directed by Dick Powell, the movie stars Robert Mitchum and Curt Jürgens as the American and German commanding officers.
10:07 - The Lotus Esprit S1 is known for its polygonal 'folded paper' like design but was ultimately made famous when it was driven by MI6 Special Agent 007, in 'The Spy Who Loved Me'.

I had more movie soundtracks than ordinary albums growing up, and TSWLM's is one of my favorites. To this day, when I watch a movie, some scenes will make me think, "Wish they'd use that 'ski chase' music here" or "The Liparus swallowing a sub music would be so ominous here." The difference a couple-three years makes. I wasn't driving when GOLDEN GUN came out -- but for SPY WHO LOVED ME I was in college and saw it at least twice at a drive-in. Like other have said, the first Bond I saw at a theater. And of course Jaws will be back -- in JAWS 2, starring Roy Schneider! 😂

It always makes me happy to see him in a Bond Movie. 😀 He was a prolific character actor, usually playing a strong arm thug or brute of some sort, but he was 7'2" and could look seriously menacing, so of course he played those roles. 😀 The other role I saw him in was as a Frankenstein's Monster type of role on an episode of The Monkees, which he was funny in when they gave him some lines. 😀
Now we are getting into the Bond era that I grew up with. I remember being a little kid watching this on TV in the early 80s and how excited I was for the car that went into the water. Always wanted that car. I think Roger Moore is my favorite Bond. Timothy Dalton is probably second. It's probably because these two are who I was most influenced by as a little kid with a vivid imagination and use to pretend I was a 007 like them. Can't wait to see these through your experience.

On Her Majesty’s Secret Service gets finally acknowledged for first time in canonicity of classic Bondverse film series when Agent Anya Amasova brings up Bond’s doomed marriage. His reaction w/ 1000-yard stare to Anya “Alright, you made your point!” really said it all.
The now called Albert Broccoli 007 Soundstage was contructed by the film’s producer (Albert himself) specially to house the enourmous Tank interior set.

You forgot to count the girl in the egyptian tent, too. In the end of this movie, the credits says James Bond Will Return in For Your Eyes Only. But in fact Moonraker was the producer’s choice.
Hi Jen, been biting at the bit looking forward to your positive Bondy Banter and summary of this classic Bond! The term 'nobody does it better' from the ace title song became a Bond statement for literally decades after & even now. Moores style and wit settle in and become part of his Bond's persona - 'spy' is excellent with its pitch and continuous amusing Rogerism's through out! The stunts having now been set at such a high precedent amazingly continued for decades, to this very day.... setting incredibly high standards that audiences had come to expect. No cgi but real risky over the top stunts that became one of the hallmarks of Bond, along with jaw dropping sets, globe trotting and sexy ladies. We knew you would love 'Spy' .... it has everything; just as you say in your summary. Tension, fun, scenery, great lair - two infact, gadgets and a great car, which makes a brief comeback, later. Moonraker next.... the same director and a similar plot, can't wait to see your bouncy Bondisms again!
That was probably Moore's best Bond film & one of the Best entries in the franchise & another of my fav Bond theme songs. Also yes Jen you should definitely watch Lawrence of Arabia, another multiple Oscar winner & a classic movie.

Next in line is Moonraker. The only film where Bond travels to space. It was a funny fact that the idea of a Bond movie in space was because the film premiered in a time where space based films were taking audiences to the cinema like the first Star Wars movie in 1977.
Just a gently reminder to youngsters: there were not green screens, not cgi or similar IN THE SKI SCENE. An actual man jumped off a cliff and they had only one chance to film it. One of the greatest stunts of all time.
Following the equally crazy and completely real stunt from the Man with the Golden Gun: the corkscrew bridge jump.
Blue/green screen technology did exist in the 70s. In British television and film it was called "color separation overlay". I learned this from watching documentaries and extra feature vids from the Jon Pertwee era of Doctor Who.
Also during the premiere in the UK prince Charles was there. And after that stunt when the parachute opened it got a standing ovation with prince charles too!

The scene where Anya figures out that Bond was the man who killed her boyfriend is my favorite Roger Moore scene in the series. No quips, no raised eyebrows. It’s like we see behind the facade for a moment and meet the real Bond, who is a professional killer above all else. Moore gives a really layered performance there.
Completely agree. He's a dutiful principled professional killer unlike some others, but yeah that's him.

Moore was often put down for his acting; here we actually believe it was him skiing, and the change in his bodily expressions, although only slight, his cold to the point response and words exude those of a professional killer - layered like you said. He could be comedic one moment and deadly the next.
It's good the writers gave her the common sense to figure out it was self defense. She still looks pretty good today though pushing eighty .
Bond's confession about killing Anya's lover is underrated personally, Bond didn't hide anything remained Anya what "business" their employed in and that he didn't enjoy killing him but was self-defense and subtle tell her that if Anya's lover had not tried to kill bond he still be alive.
They wrote that in to make it more interesting? So the audience would be intrigued. would she try to kill him? It made it more of a reason for the audience to watch it it until the end.
Interesting gadget note: back when this film came out in 1977 pretty much no one in the audience had ever seen a Jet-Ski/Ski-Doo type thing before, the “Wet Bike” that Bond rides from the sub to the villain’s lair was seen as just another fantastic futuristic Bond Gadget. Within two years they’d be pretty much everywhere there was a decent sized body of water, but it was this film that pretty much introduced them to the public.
There's a similar story about base jumping. 9 people out of 10 were convinced that the jump in the beginning of the movie was fake. The base jumpers, on the other hand, were super happy that a movie finally showed what base jumpers could do.
The other thing that comes to mind of something entering into popular culture via a Bond flick is snowboarding.
That opening ski jump done by Rick Sylvester was absolutely amazing. Jumped off mountain cliff in Norway. He was the only stuntman in a Bond film credited by name at beggining of film and deserved it. Was paid in advance obviously.

This is the film that finally put Richard Kiel (Jaws} in the spotlight after over twenty years. Usually in a costume or under lots of make-up. He was an alien in the classic Twilight Zone episode, To Serve Man. One of his last roles was in Happy Gilmore.
I liked him in "The Longest Yard," with Burt Reynolds.

He played one of Patrick McGoohan's henchmen in 'Silver Streak' in 1976. A very similar character to Jaws. He even had metal teeth (this time they were gold) a year before this movie.

It sets up all the best tropes and sets in concrete the formula that works so well into the future. FYEO is more serious with more personal stakes yet still has Roger's sense of quippy humor in it plus he is his most hard-core in that film so it is a toss-up for me but FYEO barely edges out this film IMHO.
@@mattp6089 The problem with For Your Eyes Only is that there are no villains with any pinazz to them. They are so plain I can hardly even remember any of their names. It's a good plot, with good stunts, and a good lead Bond girl but you never really feel like any of the villains are in Bond's league.

I agree! The quality of Moore 's Bond movies pretty much go downhill from here. Not his fault, he acted the role as written. Because his acting style is different from Connery's (for example RM abhors violence) the role was less "fighty" and more "quippy". One can only get away with that for so long. This is only my personal opinion of course but I believe after the negative reaction to George Lazenby and the positive reaction to a younger Roger Moore the producers simply had a hard time letting go. Why change anything in a Bond movie when the same Bond and the same formula has worked for so long? Moore did his best but as a human being he (like ALL of us) was not immune to normal gradual aging. When I imagine the kind of Bond character I want to see quips are secondary to being able to take care of himself in a physical confrontation so these made the next couple of movies in the series less enjoyable. That and oh yeah, the stories seemed way less epic. Just my opinion, I don't mean to offend anyone's taste in Bond movies. No worries however, the situa
tion eventually resolves itself.

The Roger Moore Bond films were definitely hit and miss. I really like Live and Let Die, The Spy Who Loved Me and For Your Eyes Only, but don’t really care for The Man With the Golden Gun, Moonraker, Octopussy and A View To A Kill.
The Spy Who Loved Me opened in August of 1977, two months after the release of Star Wars, and grossed $46.8 million in the US and $185.4 million globally on a $13.5 million budget, making it the eighth highest grossing film of 1977, as well as the most successful James Bond movie and United Artists highest grossing film at the time. Roger Moore also considered it his personal favorite Bond film.
As a huge Bond Aficionado (aka "nut" lol), I love all the Bond actors for different reasons. When I was little, Roger Moore was my first real exposure to Bond (his movies played on cable all the time), despite Connery chronologically coming first. As such, Moore (and Dalton) were kind of like "my" Bonds - and regardless of how Moore is viewed through a contemporary lens, he holds a special place for me as a fan. That said, this is my personal favorite Moore outing, and IMO, top 5-6 Bond film overall. The tense scenes aboard the boat diffusing the bombs, JAWS not being a punchline (se: Moonraker), the British and Royal Navy working together and the iconic Pyramic scenes are just great. Love it!
To be honest, I watch a lot of reactors (including a couple of Canadians), but when it comes to Bond reactions, nothing beats the excitement I see in Jen's reactions for those movies.
This is where the Roger Moore ones REALLY kicked into high gear for me. So much fun, I love that you're just on board to go all the way through and see them evolve! Also the groovy 70s vibes to the music, SO fun! Also as a gadget lover, Moore era goes WILD!

The actor playing Jaws was also in _Happy Gilmore_ where Shooter’s ball landed on his foot. He was also in the beginning where Happy shot a nail into his hard hat.

Yes the late Richard Kiel who played Mr Larson in Happy Gilmore was a bad guy in the Clint Eastwood western Pale Rider in 1985 as henchman Club.

- Triple X was played by Barbara Bach, who is married to Ringo Star of The Beatles.
- The music was by Marvin Hamlisch, who did the music for 'The Sting', and the song 'Nobody Does It Better' was sung by Carly Simon who was just recently inducted into The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. The song is considered the 3rd best Bond song, and it's one of my favorites. The lyrics were by Carole Bayer Sager who was a longtime partner of Hamlisch both professionally and personally. The two later wrote a Broadway musical that was very thinly autobiographical about their relationship called 'They're Playing Our Song'. Carly won an Oscar for Best Song for 'Let The River Run' from the comedy 'Working Girl' in 1989, and her most famous song is "You're So Vain"...an amazing singer-songwriter!
- Jaws was played by Richard Kiel, who is considered a fan favorite Bond bad guy.
- The submarine car is the Lotus Espirit S1 nicknamed "Wet Nellie". The same make of car will also appear briefly in 'For Your Eyes Only' in a different color.

There is a white Esprit turbo in FYEO too, but it gets destroyed quite early & was replaced by the copper coloured one.
Another awesome reaction, Jen! “Nobody Does It Better” was the second Bond theme song to reach number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, along with “Live and Let Die”. Only one Bond theme has reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and you’ll be watching it in the not too distant future.

The few that have attempted it have gotten tangled up in the series' attitudes toward stuff and haven't entered into the spirit of the things like Jen does. A few very young reactors couldn't get past the goofiness of the Cold War as presented in movies and those that could cope with that couldn't take Bond villains seriously. Inevitable that these things are a product of their time, I suppose - the Daniel Craig films might as well take place on another planet from the Roger Moore films.

Richard Kiel (Jaws) in his later years, was a resident of Oakhurst California. I worked at a McDonald's there when he would come through the drive-thru and order two large coffees for himself. He was usually done with the first cup before he left the parking lot. The movie theatre also had several pieces of memorabilia from movies he had been in along with posters of movies (other than his) that had been filmed in the area.
I've heard someone call 'The Spy Who Loved Me" the "Ur-James Bond film", not necessarily because it is the best (even though I absolutely love it) but because it has all the elements you think of that make Bond. A fantastic song (maybe my favourite in the entire run), great action, glamorous locations, an iconic henchman, a magnificent villains lair and a super sexy leading lady. We even get a nice moment of continuity where they reference Tracy (sure she isn't named onscreen but we all know who Anya is talking about when she mentions Bond was married once.) Roger Moore is at the top of his game here too.
All in all just a great time and I am loving your reactions! :)

Finally! 😍 I was literally waiting all week for your reaction - and you've obviously HAD a blast watching this. There was a time in my teens when I was obsessed with TSWLM. Came home from school, did my homework, watched the movie, next day again. Propably for about half a year. This movie is still SO spectacular. From the pre-title sequence (people went nuts when they saw the parachute), to the action, the car (LOVE the Lotus), the sets (I personally think that the tank-stage is the greatest set in movie-history) and of course the henchman. Richard Kiel has without a doubt became THE ultimate Bond-henchman. His name is a wink to a certain movie by a man called Spielberg (who always wanted to direct a Bond-movie). As a whole, TSWLM is simply spectacular. Albert R. Broccoli went full risk with this one. Highest budget for a Bond-movie so far which launched the legendary 007-Stage, still one of the biggest movie-stages worldwide. And to set the lighting right for the tanker-set, they called none other than Stanley Kubrick for help!
Not my favourite Moore-Bond (it's coming soon) but still one of the best with Roger finally becoming "his" Bond.
And the next one is indeed Moonraker, for a very simple reason: they scrapped the usual plans because of the success of a little flick called STAR WARS.

Fun Fact: The Tanker Set was the largest set ever built. (3 original size submarines fitted inside) When they tried to light the set, the productiondesigner, a short sighted man was asked were he wanted the spotlights. His answer "I cant even see the end of this set, place the bloody lights were you want"
They´d also rent a real life Tanker for the exterieur shots. However the flyby shots been useless, so the had to build a model of it. Later during the premiere, the captain of the real tanker asked when they filmed all this stunning scenes. He didnt notice that ALL of it was a model.
The subs are less than half the size of the real subs (stated so in original publicity material at the time), and the soundstage (now the 007 Stage) at Pinewood IIRC, was built for this film.
Many films have been made there, but most sets for Bond films tend to be built outdoors now, often on runways, rather like the city of Theed for 'The Phantom Menace' and the French town in 'Saving Private Ryan'.
The The Ski Jump In the beginning was a one take stunt if you notice a ski actually hits the Parachute during the fall and yes a guy did it. It was dangerous and brought the crowd in the theater to their feet. Barbara Bach Who was amazing in this eventually married Ringo Star from the Beatles . This was the first Bond movie that was actually written for Moore that is why it worked so well . The car was a Lotus , to get it in the movie they kept parking this car which wasn't in production yet outside the offices of the producers till it caught their eye . Jen if you can't tell I a a Bond nut and have loved every one of your reactions and can't wait till Moonraker you will love the main Bond Girls Name !!!!!
This one has all the needed parts of a Bond movie but still feels like a separate film. The locations and music score make it feel mystical. I watch this one most of all...
It's somewhat ironic a Bond villain called "Jaws" eats a SHARK a couple of years after the film "Jaws" (1975) was made. Payback 🦈🤣

My favorite Bond and the ultimate James Bond movie in my eyes. It has a classic plot, a beautiful Bond girl that is his equal in many ways, a memorable henchman, a great villain lair, a jaw-dropping stunt in the opening, a unique car, a fantastic title song, etc. I'm also a sucker for the more disco soundtrack on this one.
This is one of my top favorite Bond movies, A clever KGB Bond girl, the toughest and best henchman ever in the form of Jaws and our Bond girl actually scaring Bond for a few second at the end lol
The Jet Ski was first commercially available in 1973. In 1977 people who did not regularly participate in watersports might not have been familiar with them just yet. This made its appearance in this film that much more spectacular and (for lack of a better term) "Bond-like".
The theme song at the beginning is possibly one of the greatest, if not the greatest, Bond theme of all time. "Nobody Does It Better" by Carly Simon is a timeless classic.

Fun fact: as soon as the tanker ship/submarine pen set wrapped filming in 1976, they built Superman’s fortress of solitude for the 1978 film “Superman” with Christopher Reeve. That sound stage had been dubbed the “007” sound stage because it was used so many times to construct the elaborate Bond villain sets and spectacular structures appearing in those films. It was also used for Raiders of the Lost Ark and the Star Wars movies before the Spy Who Loved Me. Cool movies!
The sound stage was built for The Spy Who Loved Me & was always called the 007 stage. They built the set at the same time they completed the building. Star Wars was filmed too early to use it (& certainly most of the trilogy was filmed in Elstree, not Pinewood).
The volcano set for You Only Live Twice was temporary, which they felt in hindsight was a bit of a waste so they wanted to avoid the same mistake again.
@@TheRip72 Exactly, the 007 stage was inaugurated in 1976 while filming for this movie took place. It has since burned down twice because of "mishaps" during shoots for other movies but has always been rebuilt and it also got slightly damaged during filming of the most recent Bond flick "No Time To Die". The original Star Wars trilogy was only filmed in Elstree Studios at Borehamwood, there is even a documentary around called "Elstree 1976" about some of the guys who played minor roles and Stormtroopers and mostly had small cameo roles on lots of other movies during their careers, like Jeremy Bulloch and Anthony Forrest, who also appear in TSWLM (and in case of Bulloch, a couple more Bond movies).

The soundtracks of the James Bond movies reflect the popular music of their day. Surf music was trendy when Dr. No and From Russia With Love were filmed, accounting for the prominence of the "surf guitar" riff in the original version of the James Bond Theme. Interesting story about the car. Lotus parked the prototype down the street from the production offices for Bond for a few weeks hoping to get the attention of the powers that be. It worked, and the Esprit ended up in this film (and the next). At the time (1977), it was a pretty exotic looking car (and even 45 years later it still looks pretty good).
There are rumors that Lotus thought that the stunt driver was driving the car too slow, so many of the scenes of the initial car chase were filmed with the test driver who was able to push the limit of the car me.
Obviously it's not a Delorean (the Delorean didn't come out until 4 years after this film), but the Delorean is a "sibling" to the Esprit. Delorean went to Lotus to help them design the car, and so it shares a similar frame/body to the Esprit.
Lotus's always look cool, but they're always made out of parts from a myriad of other cars. Lotus designs and builds bodies, everything else comes from other cars. If I remember right the esprit had a Peugeot transmission, and it did have Toyota MR2 taillights. That's why they say LOTUS means Lots Of Trouble Usually Serious.

I had the pleasure of living on "La Madd" for a couple of years. The US Navy had a small presence there. It's a beautiful beach. The Americans, of course, called it "James Bond Beach". There's also a quick scene of James getting off a ferry boat. That was the ferry between "La Madd" and Palau, Italy (a town on the island of Sardinia.

The first 007 film my mom took me to the theater to see when I was a kid... and still my all time #1 007 film and theme song.
Interesting bit of casting: After appearing as Jaws in The Spy who Loved Me, Richard Kiel was the first to be considered to play a character based off of a Marvel Comics superhero; The Incredible Hulk. But after the first week of shooting, producers looked at Kiel and realized that while he had the height for the character, he lacked the musculature needed for the character. So he was sadly let go, and Lou Ferrigno got the role. But if you look at the pilot episode for The Incredible Hulk TV Series, you can see one shot of Kiel as The Hulk.
Great reaction Jen! This is definitely one of the best Roger Moore Bond films. Peak Bond Trope execution! For Your Eyes only was supposed to release next as it was one of the remaining unadapted Flemming stories. Then a little movie called Star Wars came out and Science Fiction became very en vogue, thus Moonraker was moved to the head of the line. It is super cheesy, but I think you will love it.

The Spy Who Loved Me's tanker set was so big that it required a totally new soundstage to be built at Pinewood Studios. Now known as the Albert R Broccoli 007 soundstage, it is the second largest soundstage in the world in terms of available floorspace (it's believed that the new Bad Wolf Studios soundstage 6 in Cardiff, Wales just beats it to the record for the tallest soundstage), and has been used for numerous major productions at the studios since.
It's also burnt down twice - once in 1984 when it burnt to the ground during the shooting of Ridley Scott's Legend, and again in 2006 when the roof was destroyed days after the completion of Casino Royale - and one wall was severely damaged in 2019 when a shot involving explosives went seriously wrong!
I was 10 when I saw this at the cinema (yes I'm old) a wonderful experience.

I watched the Olympic parachute jump live. Won't go into details but I was in handcuffs standing on a bridge, having just been arrest3d by police for cycling too close to the stadium. 🚳😎

They actually had six Lotus Esprit cars, and one of them was converted into a full on working submarine, which was nicknamed "Wet Nellie".
When I was a kid my sister took me to see this in the theater opening weekend. It was my first ever Bond film.
The bad guy was played by Curt Jurgens. He starred in The Enemy Below. A very good 1957 DeLuxe Color war film in CinemaScope about a battle between an American destroyer escort and a German U-boat during World War II. Produced and directed by Dick Powell, the movie stars Robert Mitchum and Curt Jürgens as the American and German commanding officers.

Thank you for your reaction! I wholeheartedley agree with 1) the soundtrack and 2) Jaws, both are great. This was the very first Bond film I ever saw and it left quite an impression on me... been a Bond fan ever since.
1st bond film I saw at the cinema, I was 7 years old, my dad took me for fish and chips after and bought me the toy car.

Oh I love those Roger Moore Bond Movies so indefinitely very much. He has so many great sayings. I think in The spy who loved me are the most. For example: "What is it James?" James: "Something just came up."

I had more movie soundtracks than ordinary albums growing up, and TSWLM's is one of my favorites. To this day, when I watch a movie, some scenes will make me think, "Wish they'd use that 'ski chase' music here" or "The Liparus swallowing a sub music would be so ominous here."
The difference a couple-three years makes. I wasn't driving when GOLDEN GUN came out -- but for SPY WHO LOVED ME I was in college and saw it at least twice at a drive-in. Like other have said, the first Bond I saw at a theater.
And of course Jaws will be back -- in JAWS 2, starring Roy Schneider! 😂

Richard Kiel as Jaws. It always makes me happy to see him in a Bond Movie. 😀 He was a prolific character actor, usually playing a strong arm thug or brute of some sort, but he was 7'2" and could look seriously menacing, so of course he played those roles. 😀 The other role I saw him in was as a Frankenstein's Monster type of role on an episode of The Monkees, which he was funny in when they gave him some lines. 😀

Now we are getting into the Bond era that I grew up with. I remember being a little kid watching this on TV in the early 80s and how excited I was for the car that went into the water. Always wanted that car. I think Roger Moore is my favorite Bond. Timothy Dalton is probably second. It's probably because these two are who I was most influenced by as a little kid with a vivid imagination and use to pretend I was a 007 like them. Can't wait to see these through your experience.
Timothy Dalton was awesome as 007 exactly what Fleming envisaged Bond to look like.

I agree TOTALLY about the musical score. I bought the 8-track album and WORE THAT BABY OUT in my 1975 VW Rabbit! Disco-techno vibe!

On Her Majesty’s Secret Service gets finally acknowledged for first time in canonicity of classic Bondverse film series when Agent Anya Amasova brings up Bond’s doomed marriage.
His reaction w/ 1000-yard stare to Anya “Alright, you made your point!” really said it all.
The now called Albert Broccoli 007 Soundstage was contructed by the film’s producer (Albert himself) specially to house the enourmous Tank interior set.

She and Jane Seymour (Live and Let Die) were in a couple of Sinbad movies with great stop motion creatures by Ray Harryhausen. Can't remember who played Sinbad. Just the ladies for some reason... 🙄

Yes! One of the all-time greats. Jen has now watched four of my top five Bond films (Goldfinger, Thunderball, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, The Spy Who Loved Me, Casino Royale). Loving this series, Jen!!!

After OHMSS, this is my favorite Bond film.
The Lotus driving out of the sea is the most James Bond moment ever. Roger Moore handing a fish to a beachgoer is also the most Roger Moore moment ever!
Moonraker is next. They had originally planned to do For Your Eyes Only next, but then Star Wars became a gigantic success the same year The Spy Who Loved Me came out and they were like „Yeaaah, let's do Moonraker instead, cause space!“ 😂

You forgot to count the girl in the egyptian tent, too. In the end of this movie, the credits says James Bond Will Return in For Your Eyes Only. But in fact Moonraker was the producer’s choice.

Hi Jen, been biting at the bit looking forward to your positive Bondy Banter and summary of this classic Bond! The term 'nobody does it better' from the ace title song became a Bond statement for literally decades after & even now. Moores style and wit settle in and become part of his Bond's persona - 'spy' is excellent with its pitch and continuous amusing Rogerism's through out!
The stunts having now been set at such a high precedent amazingly continued for decades, to this very day.... setting incredibly high standards that audiences had come to expect. No cgi but real risky over the top stunts that became one of the hallmarks of Bond, along with jaw dropping sets, globe trotting and sexy ladies. We knew you would love 'Spy' .... it has everything; just as you say in your summary. Tension, fun, scenery, great lair - two infact, gadgets and a great car, which makes a brief comeback, later.
Moonraker next.... the same director and a similar plot, can't wait to see your bouncy Bondisms again!

Nobody Does It Better is one of the great theme songs for the Bond franchise.
That was probably Moore's best Bond film & one of the Best entries in the franchise & another of my fav Bond theme songs. Also yes Jen you should definitely watch Lawrence of Arabia, another multiple Oscar winner & a classic movie.
Low key MVP is Q for all the gadgets.🤓
