When it comes to Baccarat, I put "game" in scare quotes. The only choice a player has is to bet on himself, bet on the banker, or bet on a tie. Neither player nor banker has any discretion as to when to take another card, so which side wins is entirely a matter of chance. Even counting cards doesn't really work since the shoe is filled with eight decks all shuffled into each other. The basic rules are:
      1. The dealer deals two cards to the "player" (N.B. no matter how many people are playing, there is only a single player hand) and two cards to the banker. Then, each mod 10 the sum of the value of their two cards. 10s and court cards are worth 0.
      2. The following decision loop is followed: (1) if either has an 8 or nine, both stand; (2) if the Player has a 6 or 7, the player stands and if the Banker has 5 or less, the Banker takes another card; (3) if the Player has 5 or less, the Player takes another card, and the Banker either takes another card or stands based upon a matrix between the Player's 3rd card and the Banker's existing two-card hand. This matrix is pre-defined and is not something that the House can create at its own discretion (I suppose it *could,* but then it wouldn't be Baccarat).
      3. The two final hands are compared. Since the score is mod 10 of card values, the only possible scores are 0 through 9. The hand closest to 9 wins. If it is a tie, nobody wins except those who bet on a tie. A tie is paid out at 8 to 1; a bet on either hand is paid out at 1:1. In casinos, the house takes a 5% cut of players' winning bets.
That's it. That is Baccarat. No strategy; no choice; no illusion of choice. In Craps, the game feels like there is some player agency because the shooter still has to roll the dice (unless someone is cheating, the result should still be random in accordance with the bell curve of the sum of pips on two dice), but this doesn't happen is Baccarat. I think the continued existence of the game is due to James Bond, all of the paraphernalia involved in the game (the shoe, the paddle, the shuffle machine, the rope to keep plebs out), certain rituals about the burn card or the cut card to make it look like something interesting is happening, and the fact that many casinos require a high minimum bet for the game to make it seem exclusive and prestigious.
If one wants to play a game similar to Baccarat that *does* involve some player agency, play Pai Gow (not Pai Gow Poker - just Pai Gow). Sure, some professional gamblers have worked out formulae for determining how to split the four dominoes into two sets of two, but at least one has the choice to play on instinct or work out one's own formula.

She is very smart and exudes danger, yet at the same time, Fiona is very sensual and feminine. She never lets men boss her around. There is a long story about the behind-the-scenes problems with this film that led to a "remake" almost 18 years after it came out. The problems were between co-writer Kevin McClory and Bond's creator, Ian Fleming. The fundamental problem was that Fleming, McCrory, and Jack Whittingham devised this story as a screenplay before EON productions started and got the rights to make the Bond films. Fleming novelized the screenplay as Thunderball in 1961 and did not give credit to the other two writers in the book. There was a trial, and the matter was settled out of court. When the film was made, EON brought on both McCrory and Whittingham, and McCrory produced the movie for EON. Part of the settlement allowed McCrory to try his hand at another Bond film after 10 years...which he tried several times, finally making his one and only Bond film in 1983, Never Say Never Again, starring...Sean Connery and directed by Irvin Kirschner (The Empire Strikes Back). The whole story is a lot more complicated...these are the bare bones. Never Say Never Again was one of two Bond films made in the summer of 1983, the other being Octopussy, starring Roger Moore as Bond. Ironically, both Bond actors were real-life friends.
The last note that Tom Jones sang of the theme song was so high and lasted so long that Jones collapsed after singing it.
Largo's yacht is called the Disco Volante, meaning "Flying Saucer" in Italian.
Many references played for laughs in Austin Powers come from Thunderball...almost too many to enumerate.
Almost all of the Bond films have different actors playing Felix Leiter. They maintained continuity with Jeffrey Wright as Felix only during the Craig era. Rik Van Nutter plays Felix in this one. Only one actor before the Craig era played Felix more than once. David Hedison played Felix in Live and Let Die (1973) with Roger Moore's first adventure as Bond and returned to the role in 1989 in License To Kill, Timothy Dalton's second and last film as 007. Fun fact: David Hedison is Jodie Foster's father-in-law, as Jodie is married to Alexandra Hedison, David's only child. He passed in 2019.
The final shot of the film showed Bond using the Fulton Surface-to-Air Retrieval System (STARS) or Skyhook. The CIA and the military have used this method to retrieve people since the 1950s. This was the first time it was seen on film; three years later, it was used in the John Wayne movie The Green Berets. It wouldn't be seen again in a movie until 2008's The Dark Knight when Batman used it.

Hi Coby, glad you enjoyed this film, as much as I did when I saw it first. It was the first underwater fight scene I had ever seen & made a big impression on me. For me Sean will always be he greatest Bond. :)
As for the love interests, don`t forget it was the swinging `60`s, "make love, not war" was the mantra in use. Bonds behaviour in the `60`s is the most believable for me, later it get`s more fanciful. Although, we are led to believe all suave & sophisticated spies, should be able to use their magnetism in their line of work.

I think this was the first time Connery did the opening gun barrel himself. All the times before that it was his stun double.

That is correct. The other times Bob Simmons did the gun barrel sequence. Bob is also the "guy in the dress' that Bond fights in the beginning. Bob and Sean tangled again during the big underwater fight. After Thunderball, Bob went on to do ALOT of stunt work in all the Bond films.

Love this video! Your reactions and commentary make the experience even better! It really is funny some of the dated womanizing. Bond is supposed to be a womanizer but not quite the way it was done then lol. They'd never get away with that today. I think you'll like the next one, too. You Only Live Twice. In that one, Donald Pleasance plays Blofeld, and you'll recognize right away that the Dr Evil look is based on him.
A bit of trivia: Never Say Never Again was made in the 80s and was a remake of Thunderball (the screenwriter owned the rights), but it was from a different studio so they weren't allowed to use the Bond music, etc. At the same time, Octopussy (yes, that's the title) with Roger Moore was in theaters, so we had two competing Bond films out at the same time.
Anyway, I hope you keep doing Bond films! I'm thoroughly enjoying these!

The hydrofoil boat explosion at the end did not go as planned...the production crew had good contacts with the US Armed Forces from their previous movies, and SFX coordinator John Stears managed to get hold of a supply of rocket fuel. But they didn't have any experience with it, so they went overboard and literally doused the boat with the volatile liquid. The resulting blast was so violent, it shattered windows in Bay Street, Nassau, some 20 miles away. But Stears was still awarded with the Oscar for Special Effects. Peter Lamont, who was a junior member of the Art Department in this film (he later went on to be Production Designer for 9 Bond movies from the early 80s up to "Casino Royale" and won an Oscar for "Titanic"), remembered that after the movie came out, the military inquired about the little rebreather device and they asked for how long it could be used. The answer was "well, as long as you can hold your breath!" as of course it was just a prop.
