  • (Updated content: This second update restores some deleted footage and re-synchronises the audio -- I hadn't noticed at the time that the audio of the previous upload was totally messed up for about half the video.)
A Yank in Sussex examines the Devil's Dyke in Sussex, a 100m deep V-shaped valley on the South Downs Way in southern England, near Brighton and Hove. Devil's Dyke was a major local tourist attraction in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and is still a popular destination in Sussex.
The valley is the result of solifluction and river erosion. More than fourteen thousand years ago, the area experienced an intensely cold climate, although the glaciers didn't get this far south. Snowfields capped the South Downs. Permafrost conditions meant that the chalk was permanently frozen. In summer, the snowfields melted and saturated the top layer of soil, because the water could not permeate the frozen chalk underneath. Waterlogged material situated above the permafrost slid down the gradient, removing material by friction, exposing deeper layers of frozen chalk. When the Ice Age ended, the snowfields covering the South Downs melted, and rivers formed across Sussex. The Devil's Dyke valley was completed by one such river.
But, you may ask, "A V-shaped valley isn't called a 'dike', is it?" Well, there's a twist to that -- the Devil's Dyke may be misnamed, what they call the 'dike' is actually something else! Watch the video for clarification.

This place used to be one of my favourite places for walking or to just sit on a warm day

Yeah, the first update was sloppy. I finally just re-uploaded the original video. There wasn't anything wrong with the original, I just got concerned after a comment about the British Bride's attractiveness, which made me nervous. So I cut the video part of it out, and forgot to resynchronize the video with the audio. The BB later told me that she didn't see a problem with the comment, and in fact seemed slightly annoyed with me, so I figured might as well put it all back. So there we are. Oh, and part 2 of "What is Sussex?" will finally be uploaded in a day or so. You might find part of it interesting, as it covers a bit about your namesake, King Cogidubnus.

Back in the 60's, Devils Dyke was a place to go for romance. Park up late at night and look to The Weald in all its glory.
As kids my mum would take us on the bus. There was a Zoo there.
The Devil sat in the valley, as if on a throne, so the story went.
I had reserched the railway, but was unaware of the funicular or cable car.
    Great series bringing back memories.
