- Dark Souls has a wide variety of weapons and magics to use to get through the game's well known challenges. However, today we are taking "the best offense is a good defense" hyper-literally. Can we beat Dark Souls with the power of blunt force trauma?

Bonewheel shields are terrible. Clunky, low damage, bad resistances.

Pretty sure summoning an npc would go against his self-imposed challenge requirements.
Otherwise you could just summon npcs for like 8 bosses, and just block the entire fight. Right?

I'm suprised you didn't try using the skeleton wheel, it's R2 attack does a surprising amount of damage when infused with lightning

Getting one is a bitch, but yeah this is the way to go. One lightning, one fire or chaos (for gwyn and ornstein, mostly.) I'm guessing he didn't go for it because you have to grind wheel skeletons which is honestly awful using just shields.

Tbf from what I've seen of him so far he seems fairly mediocre, not hard to do better, then again he nerfed himself by not using lighting skeleton wheel shield which has been the number 1 strat for this run for years now so maybe he'd do better if he used optimal equipment

@@GBlockbreaker Yeah, there's the God-tier players that do no-hit runs and such. I find them fascinating, but this is more relatable. I'd definitely say he's above mediocre though. I completed a SL1 run once, and dealing puny damage makes the game quite a lot harder. SL1 isn't even that hard of challenge, but I wouldn't say an average player would succeed or even want to try it. A challenge like this, especially without the best equipment, definitely takes some skill.
@@GBlockbreaker you're forgetting this is someone who is doing it for the 1st time. As much as there is people playing it blindfolded with a toe wrapped on the head in yoga position, people work that shit out for MONTHS , even years.
@@SenseiRaisen I considered trying this run myself before seeing this, and figured out lighting bonewheel shield by looking at the weapon dps calculator for a bit. (Spiked shield does similar damage with lighting, pierce shield does more but you can't get it for quite a while. Spiked and pierce do more total damage if you go for magic +10 and stack int, actually.)
VERY GOOD.
If you're open to suggestions, might I suggest a fist-weapons only run of DS:R?
I tried it myself, and its...um...you'll be fine.
Also, on an editing note, I'd be satisfied if you just showed clips of your boss fights instead of speedups - but I'm old, so maybe it's just me.

Here you go, since you are not only lazy, but I am kind and _NOT_ lazy...
*All Fist Weapons available in Dark Souls I:*
• Caestus (the one you mentioned)*
• Claws (sold by Shiva of the East)*
• Dark Hand (obtained after joining the Darkwraith covenant, as well as a possible drop from Darkwraith Knight)
*** Claws and Caestus can be ascended/upgraded to the Dragon Bone Fist weapon with the soul/Core of the Iron Golem.
Just curious if you know how to use the internet besides commenting here on YT?? Lol. Because took me all of one second to find.

That's a bit difficult, but not bad. I did caestus - you really need to learn how to dodge & parry cause you can't block. Str/dex, vit/end secondary. Fap ring & havel ring - you're gonna want speed & solid armor. Gotta make a few diff caestus to have diff enchants.
I love how he didn’t feel the need to explain the grass crest shield.
He grabbed it but didn't even equip it immediately
He said that it is used for stamina… But why didn’t he use it?
@@anti-ethniccleansing465 I know this response is a bit late but oh well. The grass crest shield gives you the stamina regen buff even when it's on your back. That's why it's still useful if you don't want to be blocking.

Possible improvements on the run, just from an early game standpoint:
-Go to Catacombs straight out of asylum, roll your way to Vamos and his bonfire, bait skeleton wheels into the explosive heads until you get their shield drop, this would give you a much needed damage boost once you hit the level requirements to two-hand it
siegbro’s shield is excellent because it can be used with the leo ring, and most bosses have very long active hitboxes for you to counter during

Not tanking the boss in a shields only run is pretty much the definition of "missing the forest through the trees"
I always get the New Londo Fire Keeper Soul immediately at the beginning as part of the run to get all the items in Firelink. Once you get the nameless soldier souls in New Londo, just grab the Fire Keeper Soul and immediately homeward bone out. The enemies won't hit you in time and you basically start the game with a +1 Estus Flask.
Prediction: use the Pierce shield and Shield of Thorns. Enfuse them as well, if you can. EZ

1 word: Bonewheel shield. You can get it at the beginning of the game.
using Leeroy to smash Bonewheels. 20 STR for 2 handing it. Another option late game is Onionbro's shield. But that's more of a quality weapon at 27 STR 40 DEX 2h for most optimal damage output. All in all respectable run.

Try beat Dark Souls without spending any soul.
Requires a bit of skill but is fairly easy
Start as sorcerer with master key
Collect every humanity you can find on your way forward and maybe farm some until you hit 30 total
Grab the gold pine resin in undead burg
Grab the morning star in firelink
Maybe grab the red tears tone ring and grass crest shield, however you will walk past them later anyways but it does make the next fight easier
(If you did that, kill a toxic dart guy for purple moss on your way down to blighttown so you can do rtsr strats on queelag)
Kill queelag with the resin and your magic, you have a single try, don't screw it up
Once you're done with her, enter the chaos covenant
Give 30 humanity to queelag's sister to get Chaos firestorm
Grab poison mist on your way up
Grab darkmoon seance ring in the catacombs (maybe kill pinwheel while you're there)
Kill taurus with sorcery
Grab the key to lower undead burg
Kill Capra with sorceries (take down the dogs with the morning star)
Go to the depths and free the pyromancer
He'll give you a promancy flame for free in firelink
Equip chaos storm and soul arrow
Go get the grass crest shield and the red tear stone ring if you haven't already
Go kill the hydra with your morning star, no rtsr required
Equip the dusk crown ring
Save and quit and reload to spawn in the piss golem, kill him to free dusk
Summon dusk and reload again go spawn in the dusk set
Grab and equip the crown of dusk
Kill gargoyles with chaos fire storm and maybe sorcery if need be
Get the lighting spear in sen's funhouse
Kill iron golem with chaos fire storm
Use the lighting spear to kill smough first
Kill ornstein with chaos fire storm
Go to frampt to place the lord vessel
Now you're free to either just go straight for the lord souls and beat the game asap or kill every boss in the game
Done
Using cleric as starting class should be possible too because you can use gravelord sword dance but it would certainly be a bit harder

I did a run like this too about a year ago and used bonewheel at the start using leroy to kill the skeletons.
And later used the pierced shield with leo ring.
I'm glad you didn't use either those two.
It was fun seeing you go for a completely different method of approach

Yay :D another shield only run. Good to see. I do a lot of shield only runs. Especially in DS1. Bonewheel is the best by far, but Pierce and Spiked are pretty good too if you build your stats right. Only "shield only" run I haven't managed to finish in DS1 so far is SL1 shield only. That one gets a bit too much for me with certain bosses, unfortunately.
This was fantastic entertainment - great to watch such skill in action.

People tend to forget that Pinwheel is so easy only because you naturally kill him (them?) before he gets started. When he gets started, it quickly becomes a shitshow with clones all around, and he's one of the biggest nuker bosses in the game. The damage is real.
Oh hey, I actually did that run when I first started playing because I loved the idea of dual wielding shields.
Back in the day I did allll these Dark Souls challenges. Watching these videos has been wonderful and nostalgic.

14:00 happened to me too at the exact spot (twice). My guess is that some entities/objects are blocking the path to perform different attack so he gets stuck in a loop where he can do only 1 action, or it might be due to firesage demon getting "blocked" in the roots/branches on the ground, i noticed that he sometimes does that and gets stuck in some spots for couple of seconds and than he almost always does this attack.
I remember Lobosjr did this some years ago. Good stuff.

I actually tried this run once. I just stopped after Artie, though, since I beat him in one try. My damage was so good, it barely felt like a challenge run anymore.
Pro tip: if you can't get Kirk's shield, the second best shield for this run is the pierce shield, which you get from Siegmeyer's questline. It actually does better damage than Kirk's, but it doesn't do bleed. Switch to it for bosses that don't have blood.
Like he said, this is a fun challenge run, and even moreso in DS2, where they specifically made shields designed with this run in mind.
