this is the type of strategy that only works with experient sniper, if the guy was a beginner he would just shot the guy without thinking if there was a decoy or not, i still didn't watch this anime but this looks so good (sry for bad english btw)

This just shows how smart Ogata is. As an experienced sniper, he knew how to fool an experienced sniper. If he was up against a novice sniper, he would actually had hid the coffin, because a novice would believe the first think he saw. Experienced people tend to overthink, and that is how the russian sniper died.
did you know that ogata is based of a finnish sniper Simo Häyhä during ww2, well in the winter war, he has over 500 comfirmed kills with his iron sight sniper

mestre12 no. He was somewhere else completely. The white blanket and the coffin were both decoys.
@@libefiken1863 well if you look at the stumps the shooter was at they’re the same as the one the first decoy was at, as well as the shooter was eating snow to cover up the fog coming from his breath so he the victim couldn’t see. Although it’s quiet unrealistic considering even a sudden movement would be noticed but who knows I’m not a sniper lol.

Not a spoiler: Dude aint dead, he just now more accurately resembles a legendary Finnish sniper from WWII. The writer really put the 'Historical' in Historical Fiction.

Honestly he wouldn't of made a mistake like that but since the battle been drawn out so long he probably got desperate and lost his patience
Also props to Ogata for making such a dangerous gamble using himself as a decoy
I think a lot of the psychological factors, like "I've seen this sniper perform such a skilled shot, why would he be so open like that?" cast a lot of doubt. And the part where the animation showed the Russian breathing heavily through chapped lips made it seem like he was getting desperate and exasperated forshure.

The breathing is highlighting how cold it is, and then it changes to the other guy placing snow in his mouth.
I'm pretty sure the chapped lips and breathing was just to draw attention to breath being visible before giving a scene that shows how the other character is avoiding his own breath from showing.
I doubt this character lost his patience, he just made a decision and made the wrong one. With how much patience he's shown I don't think he was running outta it
The ultimate chess game; you have to have quite the mental strength to be able to do this and not become overwhelmed but transition in an instant to another set up.
Golden Kamuy is legendary. Absolutely amazing. All people need to see it. His capability to doesn't move is unbelievable.

obvious decoy followed by a less obvious decoy, that's the kind of strategy you only use if you know you have to, anyone less skilled than a master would've shot the first decoy and been done
After watching this I would've shot the decoy then the coffin
That was the thing, the both knew that the other was an expert marksman because of the distance of the shots they where doing and the accurracy the had without using scopes. A less experienced sniepr would have been killed faster. In the anime you can see how both of them where trying to outsmart each other.
That was intense. He had him that whole time and didn't think it would be so obvious. I love it.
I really like the logic behind it too. A good sniper knows when they're seeing the handiwork of another expert and so will overthink it, expecting everything to be a clever trick, so the best way to outsmart one is to make them think you're tricking them when you actually aren't. Vasily himself actually uses this trick a little later as well

i dont use a scope only dioptre sights and i can happily hit a 5p coin every shot at 25meter with .22 lr and a 7" grouping at 1000yards in good weather so with a good rifle its easily doable

Is this suppose to be the white deaths story told in anime form?
The eating of snow to hide the transformation of condensation into visible mist, the lack of a scope in preference for iron sights, the gun itself being a hunting rifle, the cloak, and the tactics are all 100% matching the profile of the white death.

Nah this is a western based on the japanese Russo war which was 30-40 years previous when white death was active.
The idea of eating snow was not something only the white death did. Other people knew that as well.

That box/coffin was definitely more threatening than the blatant decoy.
This be sum reversed psychology! He pretended to be a very obvious decoy so that Vasily will be trying to find Ogata's supposed 'real' hiding spot.
Seriously, this is such an underrated show.
Simo Hayha would be proud.
I love that they chose the voice actor of Goblin Slayer and Cautious Hero (two crazy prepared protags) for Vasili who spent much of the duel mind gaming with Ogata.

I'm here after chapter 310.
people bashing vasily for shooting the coffin and just standing there. yall got to realise he wouldnt have shot if he wasnt certain ogata was in the coffin. a single bullet would give away his location and so if he wasnt super confident that he would get ogata in that one shot he wouldnt have shot. he stood there because he believed he eliminated the enemy. the whole reason he didnt shoot the "decoy" was because it looked too shoddy and exposed to be ogata. so when vasily saw the footprints it was the final confirmation that the "decoy" wasnt ogata and so he shot the coffin.
to add, the coffin was off to the right of ogata so the direction of the shot at vasily makes sense. this also meant that ogata was close to his blind spot so he couldnt react fast enough to when ogata went into the zone lol

Ogata's sniping practices are a homage to Simo actually! Such as the eating snow to hide your warm breath. The author does a lot of research on historical figures/practices and it shows!

It's after war time
Just after the Japan-Russo war and Japan is dealing with the aftermath of the social shocks of the Meiji restoration as the ghost's of the Tokugawa Shogunate that were banished to the northern frontier still linger. One of the characters is the embodiment of those ghosts. Karafuto/Sakahlin Island, the different Russian factions, old Shogunate Japan and the Ainu Natives all have a very complex history in the region that up until very recently was and occasionally still is referred to as Japans northern frontier. My mother was born on Karafuto now Sakahlin Island in 1931. My grandmother was Ainu, my Grandfather was a man of station and education but had to give that up and was disowned by his family for marrying my Ainu Grandmother. My grandfather regained a bit of station by becoming owner to a huge amount of land as part of my grandmother's dowery. My grandfather was a savvy businessman who was a linguist professor at Tokyo University. He spoke French, Russian, English and German. He became wealthy by raising and selling luxury furs. Unfortunately, he lost near everything in the war. He fled to Tokyo when his oldest son, an IJN pilot shortly after Pearl Harbor while visiting home told him that no American aircraft carriers were hit in the attack. They both knew Japan ultimately had no chance and that the Russians would soon come.
My grandfather's thinking was that the Americans would take most of mainland Japan and the Russians would only take the most northern part of Japan before the Americans stopped them. He of course was correct in this assessment. In a way, Japan losing the war returned him to his previous life. He worked as a translator on Army bases for the Americans, got my mother a secretary job on a U.S. base where she met my father. Then big changes to Japan allowed him to again work at Tokyo University in his old position, where he worked until retiring. Unfortunately, my grandmother passed from tuberculosis shortly after my mother left Japan with my father and oldest brother. My grandfather never remarried or even showed interest in other women ever again. I met and talked with him every other year from the age of 7 to 16, until his death in 1988 We often exchanged letters, in different languages. I'm a bit of a living anachronism.. We tend to have children late in life. My grandfather was born in 1891, my mother in 1931, me in 1972 and my son in 2021.. So I should have been born around 1940, my son around 1965. So we have a different perspective on time and history.
Golden Kamuy certainly enjoys more than a little embellishment, but so perfectly captures the complexities of the complicated history of the region while rolling in tons of actual history and regional facts that really shows just how tough and wild life can be around there. Bears, wolverines, sketchy situations, people on the lam and people who just want to be left alone. Frontiers are where the people who "don't play nice with others" or aren't "normal" tend to go. And this show puts a really interesting spin on it all..

After taking the shot at the coffin his position was exposed. He was guaranteed to get shot.
Bait within a bait! lol this plan only works for smart ppl who access situations too keenly and too rationally. cuz if it was just a regular sniper, like the guy says, they would've taken the bait. but he watched instead to see. ended up being the down fall. psychology battles r amazing, and soon i feel like we r entering this age rather than already in it.

That how you play a Uno reverse make them think your in the same spot then trick them u move and hid in a coffin and then when they shot where they think you are u shot them from the spot you never move from.
