  • GERMANY VS THE UK: The things you'll notice every day// As requested by so many of you, Joerg and I decided to make a video about the differences between Germany & the UK. We start with a German cheesecake recipe, a cake which is so so popular in Germany. This is just one way to make it, you can find hundreds of recipes out there. We then go on to talk about food and also cultural differences and we had so much fun making this video and hope you don't take it too seriously. Thank you so so much for watching. Kirsten & Joerg x
    _____
    RECIPE GERMAN CHEESECAKE:
We used 'Käsekuchenhilfe' to make a perfect cheesecake
    Ingredients
For the shortcrust pastry you need
200g gluten free or regular flour
    1 teaspoon baking powder
    75g sugar
    1 teaspoon vanilla bean extract
    1 egg
    100g soft butter
For the cheese filling you need
    4 egg whites
    4 egg yolks
    150g sugar
    750g fat free quark
    Lemon zest
    250ml milk
    Käsekuchenhilfe
    Method
Preheat the oven to 170 C
Mix the flour with baking powder. Add the remaining ingredients for the pastry and use an electric mixer. Transfer the pastry to the tin and press it into the base and sides. Form a lip around the edges of the tin and prick the base with a fork.
For the filling beat 1/3 of the sugar and the egg whites until stiff, add the egg yolks, quark, sugar and vanilla bean extract using an electric mixer. Transfer the cheese mixture to the tin and bake for about 70 minutes. Enjoy!

I like to plan my route around the supermarket too! I get really frustrated when they change the shop around to boost sales. Our little Waitrose in my small market town has just had a massive revamp, changed the location of literally every section and I can't bloody find anything - takes me twice as long and I frequently find myself standing in the middle of aisles looking like a confused wildebeest. 🙄

In Germany I love the Konditerei and I was amazed to stop for a coffee and pastry one afternoon and to discover that the people I was talking next to me had a dog under the table! He was adorable and sooooo quiet and well mannered. This was in Munich and I was amazed at how much better the dogs behave in Germany than the children in the United States! The Germans seemed to love their dogs and I wondered how they train them to be so good in public. Amazing!!

I am from the United States. Back about 25 years ago we had 2 German students live with us. They missed the German type of bread you were talking about, so one afternoon we went shopping in all the grocery stores around us. We were told about a little store in the next small town over from us. It is called "The Best of Europe Delicatessen". We found the bread there! And a lot of other foods that they were homesick for. It was wonderful.

First let me say you are my two favorite Germans ever!! You are so wonderful. I laughed when you talked about bread. I lived in a German house and my landlord tried American hamburger buns. He had nothing nice to say about it. I love all the German food I ever ate. Schweine schnitzel, salat like you get in a restaurant, little piles of all sorts of vegetables, kuchen, weiner mit brotchen und zenf, etc. etc. And of course the coffee and wine. ( I lived there in the 70s. I think you were both babies when I lived there.) I found several Germans who were still living the war, but also some who were very nice. (Ich bin siebzig jahre alt. Ich bin American.) Thank you for sharing your lives. Schuss! Love. XO

On my first visit to Germany I was traveling on my own. I had booked a local private hotel in a community across the river from Koblenz. Standing with reservations in hand I was distressed to find the door locked and no one to be found. I thought I had been tricked out of my money! The next thing I knew I heard heels clicking briskly down the sidewalk and an elderly lady literally *snatched* my papers out of my hands as she “barked” YOU NEED HELP! Very quickly she looked at my papers, pointed to the small restaurant next door and “barked” again as she shoved my papers back at me: YOU NEED TO GO THERE! And was off again, briskly walking away without looking back. I was so shocked I am sure my mouth was hanging open, LOL. It happened so fast I didn’t even get a chance to thank her. But she was right, the check in was inside the restaurant. I am ever so thankful she came along and still laugh and smile when I remember this. I found this to be typical of all my German vacation experiences. Germans are very helpful, just in a slightly brutal all business kind of way, at least for a southern American. Hahaha. I love traveling in Germany and the UK. Thank you so much for your video. I really enjoyed it very much. Another on this same topic would be very welcome. What about a comment on those steps to cross over peoples fields in the UK. I’m not sure I get it. We don’t walk over other people’s property in America without permission. Also looking forward to traveling “with you” again. Still social distancing here in my part of the USA too. Thanks again. :)

"Why are there so many spiders in the UK?
It may be because we provide a lot of good habitat for them, especially in towns and cities. Privet hedges and holes in walls make good hunting grounds for some species, and garages and sheds are warm and dry, the kind of place spiders love for breeding."

I used to bake with my friend and she was great making all german biscuits and cakes at xmas. I noticed appliances are made better in Germany as she bought all her furniture over to England. They celebrate Xmas on Xmas eve while we celebrate it on Xmas day. They go to church in the afternoon Xmas eve. They have holy communions for their children. I'd never heard of that. I eat lots of German food it's delicious. Meeting that family was a great experience for me and I miss them so much. My ex husband is 1/4 German. Blonde blue eyes and tall. It is brutal capitalism. There are "starter homes" which are either a tiny studio or a one bedroom flat or house which are usually basic functional shelters or some historic houses converted into tasteless flats. You start buying one of these for horrendous prices (usually by your family's help if they are comfortable enough to be able to do that or by girlfriend/boyfriend partnership), so you "jump" on the "property ladder". Hurray! Then, you work your life away to pay the mortgage. If you can manage to save some equity after some years, if it is in a good location etc. sell it, add onto it, get a larger mortgage and try to buy a larger place possibly with a garden at the back. That would usually be in the far flung suburbs, because not ordinary mortals can afford to buy a property within London borders (it is all purchased by multimillionaire Russian oligarchs). You commute to work in pitch dark and cold. What's more, you can only do this, if you have a secure and well paid job. Yet, it's difficult for a person alone. This is how you spend your life and it is called the "property ladder". Assumingly, every time you sell it, you should make profit, so it must be a "good investment" in a good location, not a HOME. How humanly and what fun, isn't it?

Your discussion on the differences between Germany and the U.K. was fascinating. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I was giggling over the tap situation. Yes, we do have many separate taps especially in the older houses. We now have a mixer tap in the kitchen but I prefer the separate ones. Why? because when you turn on a hot tap, you know what you are going to get - hot water. Cold comes out of the cold tap and you don't get scalded because someone else has just used the hot one and there is still hot water in it, coming out. However, now we are moving on to a different type of water heating system. No longer do we have a tank in the loft, full of hot water available at all times. Now we heat the water as we want it, which is great but the downside is that we waste a lot of water waiting for it to come out warm. With the old system there was always the danger that the tank would leak and flood the loft and the ceiling underneath, but lots of people still have their tanks. In addition to the tank in the loft, there is usually another tank in the airing cupboard, which warms the cupboard and airs the clothes. Once this is removed for the updated system, we have more room in the cupboard, but it is no longer warmed.
Regarding the plugs, we don't have sockets in the bathrooms because the voltage is too high at 240 and it would be very dangerous. Electricity and water don't mix well. I think in Germany and other countries in Europe, it is 220? which is slightly less of a risk. I have lived in America where the v. is 210 and there are sockets all over the place. I took my 240v laptop to America and it didn't work very well. I had to replace it.
My mother was Dutch so we have always had Maggi in our house. It is delicious in soups and almost everything else.
I was amazed to hear that in Germany you build a house and then stay in it. How does that work if you change your job and move to a different area?

    • @KirstenJoerg
      @KirstenJoerg  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Thank you so much for watching! There's also a big difference regarding the training for electricians (and all the other professions in Germany); they train for several years and have to take exams and go to school before they can call themselves electricians which is why they are far more careful with electricity here in the UK. Regarding jobs: Of course we highly generalise but should you look for another job, you try to stay in the area so you can stay in your house. If you have to move, you would of course sell your house or rent it out. Wishing you a lovely weekend and thank you for taking the time to comment, highly appreciated.

My mother in law is to the point and direct, in a kind way. Extremely practical! I am too at this point in my life. My husband went to Germany once at the age of 9 to meet his grandmother. He told me his grandmother would walk through the town everyday to the bakery. By the time they made it back home he and his brother were exhausted! Their grandmother ran them ragged 😂He only meet her the one time but what a memory! Amazing food too.

I am attached to my home; I am very direct and to the point; and, I have been raised to be polite and private. I do give people compliments when I first meet them, but I mind my own business, regarding their information. I strive for efficiency, plan extensively, and am also impatient (speed demon driver) 🤣

Thanks Kirsten and Joerg, I’m new to your vlog. Really enjoyed today’s topic. I live in New Zealand, There are a lot of similarities in food and life style to the UK, because of our being a commonwealth country. The social way we talk in shops, and business is much like the English. Possibly even more relaxed and friendly. New Zealanders love to get to know you if your from another country. So if we ask you questions it’s just our way of getting to know you, and making you feel welcome. I’ve had a German friend from Bavaria and one German young lady who lived at my house for a year on a working holiday, and two German young men also on working holiday. All have been so friendly, fantastic manners, reliable as tenants in my house. All became lovely friends. It was such a great experience getting to know them. :)
I enjoyed your cooking and food comparisons. New Zealanders also love Vegemite and Marmite, just as much as the Australians. I grew up eating Vegemite so that’s my preference too.

My husband is English and speaks so directly at times it's embarrasing for me. He hates small talk and won't answer questions about his personal life. He is closer to being more German than he would like to admit; there's German in his mother's side of the family. I'm Southamerican and after 43 years of marriage, I have learned his ways. So, in one of my trips to visit my family, my sister kept apologizing because she said I was being very rude when asked questions. So, when you pointed out at this, I remembered my situation, which made me laugh. By the way, we've lived in English Canada for 50 years. I love your shows and your Victorian house is gorgeous. Thank you for your videos, very entertaining and beautifully done.

Great video! I lived in Germany from 84 to 89. I loved, loved, loved it! The people, the food, scenery, well you name it. German cheesecake is the absolute best! Same with German bread. So many differences in countries but that is what makes the experiences richer. I remember bringing American beer to a German friend’s house and all night they laughed at the twist tops. When it was time to go they said, “thanks for the American piss water!” Lol! It was very weak and thin compared to German beer. Germans love everything very full bodied and I am forever changed by it. Full bodied coffee, full bodied red wine, rich hearty bread, etc etc. I had to get used to the US all over again when I moved back. Such great memories! Love to you both!!! ❤️❤️

The colleagues in our office in Bayreuth are great! We love the humour. When you first meet them they seem quite serious but then you discover a fantastic wry sense of humour and clever observations. Also I learned that very few people have a credit card in Germany! There is a belief that the German way is best and it's quite hard to convince them that it is different in UK, especially around customer and buying habits. I love my German colleagues though 😁

I spend a lot of time in the UK and noticed differences both pro and con. For example in one marks and Spencer’s supermarket there were only ready meals and all I wanted was some fruit. Also the bread is like sawdust. I love French breads. Also my husband will take 20 minutes to tell me a story after going off on tangents endlessly when all I want is for him to get to the point. He makes his own bread because he can't stand to eat ours. By the way, we call that instrument an accordion. Valerie Willimann I find that’s what it’s like in Lidl, (U.K.), but I always thought it was just so they keep their costs down and pay less wages to staff. I didn’t realise it’s based on the German way of doing things.

Love your videos! I’m an American and lived in England for 15 years - you had me laughing! I solved the plug problem in the bathroom with an extension cord 🤫. The taps were just something you get used to. The trick is to fill the basin with the temp water you want. I love German food - My grandpa and my husband’s father were German descent - so we both grew up with German food. We have ALDI here now!!! I shop there all the time. btw, your kitchen is lovely! 🇺🇸💕🇬🇧

not go out for some cheesecake!!! Looks perfect. As does the Jura espresso

we have several good bakeries where we can get European style bread.
You both always make me smile and laugh...especially Joerg smacking his

This was so much fun! I live in L.A. now, my family is German i spent a lot of time there growing up. I always liked German efficiency, but there is a lack of fun and spontaneity in Germans so :(. When i was 13 i had to choose whether to live in Germany or US....i intuitively knew US was for me. I love so much about Germany but it was too 'regimented' for me. I grew up eating that exact cheese cake, eating all the good German brots, as my parents shopped at the German store. I even learned how to drive a stick shift there...i remember sweating bullets, i was so scared. However, nothing will ever beat German sausages of every kind. I really love the food there. Still my favorite!

Im living in Germany and I can tell you this might have changed over the last decades. I have a lot of fun here and I like to be spontaneous. Germany has many rules but hardly any controls and very soft penalties. In the US you can not even drink a beer in public and clubs and bars often close at 2 am, while here they are open the whole night..

I grew up with a German mom and an American dad in the military, so I spent half my time in Germany (also I was born in Nurnberg) and I have to say that a lot of the wurst was my favorite! Nurnberg brats and then white wurst. I will point out that they are not even close to being the same, made here in the US, if you can even find them. I live in the south so we don't have a lot of things that you can get in big cities like New York.

The differences you described between German and English really fits all the stereotypes we observe here in the U.S. The Germans are thought of as forward thinking, disciplined, scientific, and the English are thought of as more pastoral, earthy, or softer. I know it's not a representation of all Germans or Englishmen but it seems quite close. Since we are a melting pot of nationalities there can be quite different traits in the same family. My mom was from German stock and my dad from Scotch/ English, and they fit the stereotypes. Also, my brother described the autobahn from his time in the air force stationed there in the 70's. I thought it quite scary, still do, lol. You two are treasures, please, keep up the great videos.

    • @KirstenJoerg
      @KirstenJoerg  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Best thing is to eat it directly from the oven with butter, so simple sooooo delicious 🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤 I was in Singapore for 6 months and they have this British "bread" as well. It was disgusting and in Germany we would call it toast, but never bread. 🤣 Missed it so much. The taste and smell is too good. Love our German bakeries. ❤️❤️ Thanks for this great video, made my day. ☺️❤️ PS: We drove 2 times in Ireland...
