Halfway through ‘we’ and I have read both ‘brave new world’ and ‘1984‘ I’m glad Aldous, George and Yevgeny wrote their books! I only wish that more people read these books and then maybe the individual would be more prized over the mob.
Fahrenheit 451 is halfway between Brave New World and 1984. 1) Fahrenheit 451 is going on during a war. But unlike 1984 no one cares about the War just casually acknowledge it. Books are burned by fireman like how things that the party disagree with is destroyed in 1984. The Firemen are government assigned destroyers of books like thought police. 2) Fahrenheit 451 are obsessed with constantly being happy, are wealthy, and lack deep thoughts on life. With feeling of negative emotions being seen as weird and no wanting showing deep feelings and reflecting on deeper meaning of life. Like how Brave New World frowns on Negative emotions and use Soma to cure them. In Brave New World everyone is rich. And people focus on entertainment and distraction.
I had never heard of this book or writer until I watched a dibate/discussion on 1984 vs Brave New World. I learned a lot. There's too many books and not enough time. Thank you.
Agreed. It's definitely worth reading - it's not as bleak as 1984 but is so interesting to see how it sets the groundwork for so many books that came after it .
Was an OK book. I've read 1984. And when I heard that "We" was an inspiration for 1984, I ordered the book and gave it a read. It's a very hard read. But if your a fan of dystopian fiction, then give it a read for the sake of it. Otherwise. I'd read "Brave New World". It's almost as good as 1984.
(As a non English speaker sorry for my English) I've never thought of "We" as a dystopia, but much more as an allegory. As a bolchevick and member of the communist party until 1917, I think Zamyatin was writting about what was takeing place in the Soviet Union at the time, about his state of mind and his feelings living in a society where the dream of collective happiness was turning into an individual nightmare. The main character is He, Zamyatin being a naval engireer, and he's really writting about his disappointment about the Revolution. It's much more an essay than a novel, with a very interresting "mathematical philosophy" which was quite new to me. When I read this book, I was thinking of "Candide" by Voltaire, espacially because of the innocence and naivity of the main character, because of the critic of the politics of the time, the of the philosopical scope of the book and finally because of the humour. I've read "1984" before and enjoyed it as a dystopian scence fiction books. Then many years later I read "We". It was clear that "We" was the starting point of "1984". "We" is much deeper and philosophical, and a much harder reading than "1984" for sure. "We" is a timeless book that will always resonate because is main topic is existancialism. "1984" is a book the aged in is absolete view of the futur, which can lead the reader to disqualify its meaning.
We is 1984 without poverty or war but equal amount of surveillance and leader worship. Except citizens in We are more educated instead of being dumbed down.
I just finished We a few weeks ago and 1984 is one of my favorite books. There seem to be so many similarities and clearly Orwell was highly inspired to use We as a blueprint of sorts to his book. I really enjoyed Zamyatin's novel and thought it was quite thought provoking and a very timeless work, a very scary society for sure. I really enjoyed your thoughts and commentary about this. Thanks for the insightful video!
I'm in the process of reading "We" now. If there's ironic humor in it, or any humor in it, I'll need it pointed out to me. So far We seems about as bleak as 1984. Thx for the review. Glad to see others have read We. It is a seminal work--as you rightly point out.
Love this review. I was so ashamed that I had never heard of this book. As a bookworm & as what the CIA may call a “conspiracy theorist” ... I love books with storylines that gives the reader a little wake up call to what very well may happen (If we don’t stand up against it). So one autumn day in 2018 during a week long jury duty case, I decided to revisit 1984 & fell in love with it all over again. My daughter (bookworm 2.0) said “Hey all finish with 1984? Try this one. Our professor is having us read this. You might like it ... supposedly this book inspired 1984.” And so she handed me WE by Yevgeny Zamyatin! Immediately I was intrigued ... yet I was fully prepared to give this book a free pass before I even cracked it open just in case I hated it. I did not expect to fall in love it & actually favor it over 1984.
Do you have physical gold and silver? Get ready for the government to completely eliminate cash. As a conspiracy theorist you probably know what is going on right now. Hopefully you and your family are prepared.
@@magickmarck honestly they made me feel more alone, when I talked to people about things described in dystopian book (censorship, propaganda, etc) they didn't seem to care or even notice it.

Utopian. In "1984" we see a totalitarian system serving the interests of a small group of the party elite, while in "We" society is controlled like mathematical algorithms to achieve the greatest efficiency of scientific progress.
I read about We in The Gulag Archipelago. The author says it was one of the favourites to read in the gulag. I wonder if he meant that literally or symbolically?
Wow - thanks for the great video with lots of good background info. I've not read We although I've heard if it. The character name thing reminds me of George Lucas' THX 1138.

Saying Orwell plagiarized Zamyatin is like saying Shakespeare plagiarized Cinthio when he wrote Othello. Shakespeare rarely thought up any original plots, but that was not what he was about. There are similarities in the plots, circumstances and characters between We and 1984, but you don't read these books for the plot or the characters. Zamyatin had not said everything there was to say about the dystopian subgenre, but all repressive regimes share similarities.

1984 was similar to We but is a much better book. I read most of Orwell's essays and all his ideas about state repression and control of language went into the book. Orwell described those ideas much better. The utter cynicism of a state doing what it knew to be wrong. The not daring to let yourself even consider what in your heart you know to be true. I did not think Brave New World showed much resemblance to We, but it is a long time since I read it. Brave New World was an incredible book.

The Soviet Union was started after 'We' was published.

Wonderful review. So well put together, and masterfully designed.
En passant thanks 🙂
I read "we" in around 62, also read farenheit 451, 1984, several others
Read We last year and loved it more than 1984 because of the humour
The end of both novels is also the same - betrayal of love in favour to societal values!

Brave New World was written in 1931, published in 1932.

Dystopian books didn't scare the crap out of me, they opened my eyes to the world we live in.
They made me feel validated and less alone.

1984 is one of my favourite books (if not my favourite), so I will definitely pick this up!
If you're a fan of dystopian fiction I recommend it as an essential read.

I had no idea; this was fascinating.
It also inspired Brave New World. And We is the foret dystopia that set the tone for all dystopian work we got to know.
We want video games or table-top games based on this.
During my entire reading of "We" I just could not decide if that system is utopian or dystopian to me.
Utopian. In "1984" we see a totalitarian system serving the interests of a small group of the party elite, while in "We" society is controlled like mathematical algorithms to achieve the greatest efficiency of scientific progress.

Regarding the negative emotions, 1984 has the Two Minutes Hate and Hate Week.
Got distracted by your shelf and noticed Vinland Saga!
Those Russians are great writers
Reading a commentary on community season 5 episode 8 brought me here
How about "Anthem" by Ayn Rand?
I've read both. I enjoyed 1984 more but maybe that is to do with the translation issues from Russian to English.
