  • In this episode I go over the block. I've had a lot of requests to cover this topic. This is a longer video with how to execute a block and I've included a couple drills to help you learn and practice the block. As always, please send me your comments, questions and requests for future episodes.

    Almost a decade late coming across this video. Just starting throwing the jav for my hs and have been focusing so much on my block because well… it fit the description of every negative thing you said. Such a great video, thank you so much!

    Just spot on advice. Really nuts and bolts of the throw dynamic. Excellent work.

    I agree. When I speak of linear direction I don't mean all things move along a straight line. There are a lot of twists, stretching and many other things going on while moving in a linear direction. I guess that is why I believe that people can throw far using so many techniques. Also why I love this event ;-)

    Great exercises. I was a 76 meter thrower (UGA, 90'-93') and wish I would have started throwing with you.

    Direction of motion in the body is guided by the curved joint surfaces, you can have ideas of straight lines but it does not translate in to human motion. The transformation of linear energy from the run up is best converted into powerful elastic strength / stretch arks of motion. Jan throw were he does because that is where he generates the most power, and release velocity. Trying to throw straight would KILL what he is so good at. Cheers Nigel

    I have noticed Zelezny's throws are off to the right. I'm not sure if it is intentional. Wish I could ask him that. Zelezny is difficult to model for younger throwers. There are so many ways to generate power in the throw but my philosophy is that the power is already going in a linear direction, so generate more along that same line. I know folks will disagree with me on that philosophy.

    i’m a senior in high school ranked higher in my district, i’ve been throwing around 140 consistent with terrible form, when i get to my block (i’m right handed) i ride right over it and my right leg goes straight up and you can see me stand up halfway through delivery. any tips?? i feel like if i fix this it’ll be huge for me

      My guess is the timing of your left arm blocking with your left leg blocking. Is your left arm still high when your left leg hits the ground? I would need to see your throw to know for sure. th-cam.com/video/60SndaHvuIo/w-d-xo.html

    Hey, just curious... how much distance can a decent block potentially add to the javelin?

  • @kyrielin2607
    @kyrielin2607 ปีที่แล้ว

    I want to ask if it's the place where the force is made. It's where the legs and buttocks are twisted. Because of the twist, the hand follows.

      Speed down the runway, elastic energy through loose muscles and all is transferred into the javelin. Large muscle groups to smaller. Slow to fast. I really need to make a video on this. For now, here’s an explanation that relates to your question: th-cam.com/video/WMtB4q2b69g/w-d-xo.html

    hey coach halley awesome video and i had a question... unfortunately many times when I throw I do at least one of these errors and sometimes all three so would the 2 drills you showed us help correct these errors or do you have any others? especially with that "rotational block" because this causes me to throw with a side arm which kills my elbow! thanks

    How do jerk and block

  • @owenfocke8495

    should the front foot be completely straight? And the back foot drags with no weight on it?

    • @coachhalley
      @coachhalley  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The front foot should generally be straight to handle the forces. I've seen some throwers point slightly open with the block foot to get the hips through but at the risk of an ankle injury. The back foot can be light but ultimately you want a quick reaction of the right knee, then hip and up through the body to deliver the throw (kinetic chain). Hope this helps.

    in another video, you said to point your blocking foot at 45 degrees, the same as your plant foot...in this video, you are saying to point your foot forward. So which is correct?

    • @coachhalley
      @coachhalley  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm not sure what video you are referring to but I'll answer it this way. The block foot is your plant foot and should be forward toward your target. The joints of your block leg can handle the forces much better if your leg/knee/foot are pointed in the direction of force. A 45 degree block leg will result in an injury in many cases. I do however recommend your trail leg land at 45 degrees in an attempt to move the right hip into your block in an attempt to accelerate into your throw. I hope this clarifies things.

    Don't know if your still here to answer but i just pick up javelin recently and i have issue of my bending in the block. I was thinking I might be not conscious of doing it or my leg is weak or probably didnt do a drill to force my block leg from bending.

    • @coachhalley
      @coachhalley  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Navada Blanchard Some times the block is just a timing issue. Depending on the angle you are moving into your block you should be able to hold it. Practice sliding into your block and holding the leg solid. When you throw you may also need to have your upper body in a ready position to receive the block and react to it. Remember, the block should deflect force not stop it. When you get time, send me a video of you throwing. I'm happy to look at it.

    Coach, can you alter this drill for baseball pitchers?

    • @coachhalley
      @coachhalley  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      As much as I love baseball, I'm not sure the mechanics are quite the same. I know there are some similarities but not quite the same. In baseball there is more pushing off the back leg. If you push off the back leg in the javelin it will affect the leverage and other things in the throwing sequence. Maybe some pitching coaches can chime in here...

    sir my run up is not correct. sir i am able to throw 55by 5 steps but when i am taken my ful run up i am able to throw49 metres so sir how i can correct this

    • @coachhalley
      @coachhalley  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would like to see what your form looks like. I'm only assuming here but I suspect your full approach is too fast and you are not setting up enough during your crossover to be ready to deliver the throw. The crossover phase/Impulse step is so important in setting your body up to deliver the throw. I hope this helps.

    Thanks scott - Have you ever noticed that ALL Jan Zelezny big throwers are way out to the right. All of them! There is a reason for this, and it does not fit with what you are describing. It's about the human body producing power.
