Funny how everybody in the comments think he is a random dude who knows physics when in fact he is one of the greatest minds alive today on the matter..
I intended to fall asleep to this and ended up actually listening to the whole thing. Fascinating and helpful explanations to deepened my understanding, that’s for sure.
This is gold star ASMR. The only thing that could possibly make it better is to add a crisp and understated phonograph static filter to it. His voice, volume and timbre would be all the more complemented by some LP pops and hisses.
I don’t think it’s just the accent that’s tingly or relaxing, but also the characters of his voice, like the timbre, pitch, tone and the speed & rhythm
Soy Argentino y me dio mucha gracia / alegría, encontrar al profesor que admiro autor de la conjetura que lleva su apellido, seguro que le causará risa si se entera que su entrevista es ASMR.
I met Dr. Maldacena twice while I was in grad school working with one of his colleagues, and he always seemed like a lovely man. Granted, I may be biased on account of just how few of us Latinos there are in the “upper echelons” of theoretical physics. Same with black folks, which makes me all the more glad for Neil Degrasse Tyson’s role as someone inspiring kids to pursue science. ❤️
Thats Juan Maldacena! One of the great minds of our time - He and Susskind lay forth the ER = EPR principle, einstein rosen bridges is the same thing as EPR entanglement :D
theres a video of magician Ricky Jay in a library doing an interview flipping through books and pages. if you could find that full video im sure it would be amazing. i can only find like a 3 minute excerpt of it on here sadly
I was smiling just listening with my eyes closed I watched this video not because I wanted to fall asleep but because I saw Juan Maldacena's picture. I wonder if including his name in the video would attract more viewers.
Always find it fascinating when great minds try to understand the universe. Never really accepted the big bang because its a bit of a cheat answer. This universe is bound by the laws of physics which by definition means imprisoned in inescapable restrictions and so no mind existing within this restriction could ever hope to process anything outside of those laws. Much like how the energy in cells have no understanding of the overall form cells together take. As for space I always thought it was like a battery, whereby matter is the positive charge and space is the negative. Matter hits matter, matter is drawn into space etc. But its all just an opinion. On another note... the asmr side works just fine lol!
its an opinion and its based on a misunderstanding of the big bang theory so its worthless. Remember that science is not required to be immediately transparent to you and the ways it is explained by science communicators is by necessity incomplete and part of what we call "lies for children". They are simplified conceptual representations of the actual theories which in reality take years of diligent study to understand. People often understand introductory level science and then assume they know enough to come up with their own ideas and theories. Or they think they know enough to dismiss the MASSIVE amount of work that has been done by thousands of people for untold years. But this is not possible. So don't waste your time deluding yourself into thinking you know enough to call the big bang "a cheat". The way it was explained to you was a cheat because you are not a physics student and not going to come to a class every day for years and then a laboratory every day for years after that. So again - do not delude yourself into thinking you actually understand these things well enough to sincerely speculate or postulate or hypothesize about them. I'm sure you've heard of Dunning Kruger. You simply do not know the breadth of your own ignorance. This is not meant as an insult. Just a matter of fact based on your presumptuous comment above. I accept the gap in my own understanding of these things and respect the work done by people who have dedicated their entire lives to building upon our collected knowledge. This is why we have peer review. These concepts are too complex for any one person to fully understand them. We rely on our collective intellect to solve these problems on a granular level. In understanding the grain of sand you do not understand the beach. Imagine having a grain of sand and not knowing the concept of "sand" as a whole. Or not knowing what a beach was, or a rock, or sediment. Imagine each person understanding their own grain of sand and then through communication coming to the understanding of a beach, or a desert. Collectively growing the level of understanding as a whole but no one person truly deeply grasping it all. This is why we have experts. It is not a matter of ability but a matter of scale. You would never expect a person to move a mountain. Telling someone they cannot ever move a mountain isn't a comment on their strength. A human by its very nature cannot do this, even the strongest. That is what you are trying to do here by calling the big bang a cheat. Move something that one person cannot move.
He is Juan Maldacena. He has made significant advances in the theory that the contents of the universe originate as mathematics encoded on a boundary surrounding the entire cosmos: the holographic principle. He's not just "some Argentinean physicist" :)
I understand there's nothing intentionally negative about this video but it's a slightly depressing reflection on society to consider people watching one of the most brilliant scientists to fall asleep and reality tv to be entertained. Not wishing to tell others how to live their lives but it's hard to imagine that people like these were once interviewed on late night tv.

The amount of vocal fry in his speech is super prevalent and interesting. It’s like his speech is “textured” at certain points.
