Johnny deserved much more recognition internationally than he received in life -. for his work as a social scientist, music artist, and activist. Thank you, people of France, for doing what the rest of the world should have done.
He did receive an OBE thankfully! He was and always will be one of the most inspiring people I've ever come across. I will never forget the first time I heard this song, and exactly where I was... I was absolutely transfixed! I had never heard anything like it in my life! I couldn't wait to get my hands on the album and I did manage to see him live in London twice. Legend, who deserved the OBE and who will be dancing for joy in heaven now - not for the awards, but for the love he brought in recognising that people are people, and racial bullshit has no place anywhere! th-cam.com/video/WcvRbf5IgNg/w-d-xo.html

I loved this man and his music. I finally saw him in Australia - one of my best evenings of music. He was such a great entertainer and humanitarian. Vail Johnny Clegg!
This is one of the men who held the divided South Africa together. He died too soon, South Africa hasn't yet reached that goal we all prayed for. Nelson Mandela, Johny Clegg, Leon Chuster and PJ Powers are those iconic people in SA who had a way to resolve our differences without any conflict. May his soul rest in peace, I used to listen to this song as a kid, loving it without even knowing the singer.
WOW I saw them in Vancouver BC Canada in 1993, and they were absolutely incredible!! I'm not from South Africa, but when I was on a trip to Israel, I met a South African girl who turned me onto Johnny Clegg, and I was hooked for life! I didn't know that he was ill and passed, I am so sorry to hear that. Gd bless South Africa!!!
This was the first song I can remember listening that opened another world to me. I still love the all the US/UK pop and rock, but this song introduced me to sounds, rhythms and harmonies that I had no idea existed. It's one of those comfort songs that just gives me a few moments of joy every time I hear it.
Such a great song and performance. I've always wondered why this song didn't get more notrity. Alas, this world of ours is sleep walking and lost to the meaning of what it is to experience the true essence of this thing we call Living and Life
I just wish they could revive this kind of music. One of the best groups out of South Africa. Timeless music is still played to this day. Love to hear it played on radio stations

Johnny was a white man who embraced his African heritage and celebrated it and was accepted by black Africans as one of them. You can't be more proud than that. RIP Johnny, you are sorely missed by blacks and whites alike. Sleep with the angels.. xxx
This song brought me to awareness of what was going on in South Africa. I saw the same hatred there that I have seen in America. It is people like Johnny Clegg that move humanity forward, even if it is only a small step at a time. The world is better for his life...

I saw Juluka in Cleveland Ohio during their first US tour. It was an amazing experience to be introduced to the music of South Africa by a white Englishmen raised in Africa. I now have a great love for all music coming from all of the African continent as well as the hybridizations coming from Europe. Thanks to Johnny for introducing me, an African American, one of the “Scatterlings of Africa” to the music of the motherland.
RIP Johnny Glegg....you were such a fantastic human being...we should all strive to have the mindset you had...your music and dance will always be remembered!
Johnny Clegg was on The Johnny Carson Show one night & started to sing with his band (I think it was "Scatterlings of Africa"). Suddenly another young slender black man came out & stood beside Johnny. And then together during the instrumental break, together they started to do this lightning-fast dance with sticks between their legs, over their legs, under their feet, over their head. It was magnificent. Carson was flabbergasted & his audience was already applauding wildly. No one had ever seen anything like it. The single most impressive dance & performance I ever saw. RIP indeed Johnny Clegg -- you & your musicians were simply...universal.
@@lastrada52 you’re welcome. In case you’re interested in the Johnny Clegg ‘origins story’, his memoir ‘Scatterling of Africa’ has recently been released by PanMacmillan SA in South Africa ( I have a copy 🔥❤️).Some international fans have already ordered and received it including some Americans. However, it will be released internationally at some stage- so keep a lookout for it.
@@susanlarhubarbe9475 -Excellent -- thanks, Susan. Clegg was amazing as a performer & singer. His bands were all exceptional. Funny how one gets sad when someone passes that you really never knew. I guess that has to do with respect for what that person did, & because you enjoyed it so much. I'm in the US -- what do I know of South African music. Before Clegg, the only music I bought that was foreign was in the 70s -- Burundi Black -- the world-famous drummers. Then they appeared on a Joni Mitchell album. They were astonishing, raw, tribal -- but, their self-titled percussion songs (2) even made it to New York City rock stations. They were great. So, of course, when I heard Clegg's "Scatterlings of Africa," there it was again. That percussive magic with melody & lyrics. They give Paul Simon the credit for bringing this music to America -- but Clegg was there long before him.
Gosh! Still amazed by how touching this song is in 2024

Thanks to Johnny for introducing me, an African American, one of the “Scatterlings of Africa” to the music of the motherland.
I am South African Zulu and it's amazing how he could do the traditional Zulu dance. I get goosebumps just watching them RIP Johnny
I have the vinyl and it is one of my precious possessions...
Same here

RIP Johnny Glegg....you were such a fantastic human being...we should all strive to have the mindset you had...your music and dance will always be remembered!
All of Us with Red Dirt in Our veins understand and miss You Johnny! 💔
That was ‘Dela’ and the young slender black man was his long standing dance partner Dudu Zulu who was the percussionist in Savuka.
@@susanlarhubarbe9475 - Thank you so much for that clarification Susan.
Repose en Paix ...mr Johnny ...😢😢😢😢 from New Caledonia KANAKY..mer6 d'Etre venue chez Nous 🌺🌺🌹🌹.

Old is gold...... greatest hit now & for ever....
Been listening to this song/album from decades ago! Luv it! I do wonder why a song like 'Africa' from Toto is a hit, and not his one! Such a shame.
